- MakaleAçık Erişim2022Scopus SJRQ2Age- and Sex-Specific Bioaccumulation of Selected Metals in Freshwater Mussel (Unio elangatulus eucirrus Bourguignat, 1860) Populating from Keban Dam Lake (Elazig, Turkey)
Danabaş, Durali; Kutluyer, Filiz; Ural, Mesut; Özçelik, Mehtap; Kocabaş, Mehmet
In aquatic life, environmental chemicals are accumulated by mussels due to their sentinel nature and filter-feeding characteristics. Herein, the present study focused on assessing the concentrations of Cu, Zn, Mg, Mn, Fe, Cd, Pb, Ca, K, and Na levels in freshwater mussels (Unio elangatulus eucirrus) depending on sex and age. For all trace metals, some important differences of bioaccumulations were determined depending on ages and sex. In details, the results indicated that an important age-related accumulation of Mg, Cd, Ca, and K was in females and all trace elements, except Cu, Mg, and K levels in males (p < 0.05). No statistical differences were determined in mean concentrations of Cu, Zn, Mg, and Na. There are statistical differences in Mg, Mn, Fe, and Ca levels between females and males in four aged mussels (p < 0.05). Lead levels were under detectable limits. Overall, metal levels and their toxicity in freshwater mussels should be closely monitored for health of the environment, animals, and humans, since mussels and fish species fed on them are consumed highly in the research region and around.

- MakaleYalnız künye2020Scopus SJRQ4Metal bioaccumulation in selected tissues of barb (Barbus sp.) and common carp (Cyprinus carpio, Linnaeus 1758) from the Keban Dam Lake, Turkey
Danabas, Durali; Kutluyer, Filiz; Ural, Mesut; Kocabaş, Mehmet
The aquatic life has been negatively influenced by harmful effects of environmental toxic elements, including heavy metals. The elevated concentrations of metals may be harmful for aquatic animals and human health. Herein, the present study deals with assessment of the bioavailability of metals [cadmium (Cd), chrome (Cr), copper (Cu), zinc (Zn), iron (Fe), lead (Pb), manganese (Mn), mercury (Hg), nickel (Ni), and selenium (Se)] in organs such as muscle, gills, liver, kidney, and gonad of the commercially consumed Barbus sp. and Cyprinus carpio (Linnaeus, 1758) collected from Keban Dam Lake, eastern Turkey. The fish were captured from four different stations of Keban Dam Lake. Our results indicated that Fe and Zn concentrations were the highest in all tissues of two fish species while Cd concentrations were the lowest levels. In addition, detected metals accumulated in the muscle of common carp at higher levels compared to Barbus sp. The results from the present study also demonstrated significant variations and considerable differences in the concentrations of all 10 elements between the four stations and different fish tissues. Overall, the concentrations of detected metals in the muscle were many folds higher than the permissible level prescribed by some national and international legislation, which raises health risk concerns.

- MakaleYalnız künye2018Scopus SJRQ2Trace Metal Levels in Rainbow Trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) Cultured in Net Cages in a Reservoir and Evaluation of Human Health Risks from Consumption
Varol, Memet; Kaya, Gülderen Kurt; Alp, Sumru Anık; Sünbül, Muhammet Raşit
Although fish consumption has positive health effects, metals accumulated in fish can cause human health risks. In this study, the levels of ten metals in rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) farmed in the Keban Dam Reservoir, which has the biggest rainbow trout production capacity in Turkey, were determined and compared with the maximum permissible levels (MPLs). Also, human health risks associated with rainbow trout consumption were assessed. The metal concentrations in rainbow trout were found below the MPLs. The estimated daily intake of each metal was much lower than the respective tolerable daily intake. The target hazard quotient (THQ) for individual metal and total THQ for combined metals did not exceed 1, indicating no health risk for consumers. The cancer risk (CR) value for inorganic arsenic was within the acceptable lifetime risk range of 10−6 and 10−4. For carcinogenic and non-carcinogenic effects, the maximum allowable fish consumption rates were high enough to ensure the human health. According to these results, the consumption of rainbow trout farmed in the Keban Dam Reservoir does not pose a risk on human health.

- MakaleYalnız künye2017Scopus SJRQ1Heavy metal and arsenic concentrations in rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) farmed in a dam reservoir on the Firat (Euphrates) River: Risk-based consumption advisories
Varol, Memet; Kaya, Gülderen Kurt; Alp, Alper
The concentrations of ten metals in rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) farmed in the Karakaya Dam Reservoir (Turkey) on the Firat River were determined. The metal concentrations in rainbow trout did not exceed the maximum permissible levels. Biomagnification factors (BMF) of ten metals were < 1, indicating that these metals were not biomagnified. The estimated daily intake (EDI) of each metal was much lower than the respective tolerable daily intake (TDI). The target hazard quotient (THQ) for individual metal and total THQ for combined metals were lower than 1, indicating no health risk for consumers due to the intake of either individual metal or combined metals. The cancer risk (CR) value for toxic inorganic As was below 10–6, indicating no carcinogenic risk. According to the calculated maximum allowable consumption rates (CRmm), an adult may safely consume 28 meals of rainbow trout from the dam reservoir per month with no adverse carcinogenic and non-carcinogenic health effects. According to these results, the consumption of rainbow trout farmed in this dam reservoir is completely safe for human health.

- MakaleYalnız künye2013Scopus SJRQ3EFFECT OF THE PRESENCE OF PHOSPHATE BASED FERTILIZER ON METAL REMOVAL CAPACITY OF NATIVE BIORETENTION MATERIALS
Demir, Veysel; Bin-Shafique, Sazzad
Batch tests were conducted on several Texas native bioretention media to estimate the removal capacity of lead and copper from contaminated water and to understand the effect of the presence of phosphate (due to application of phosphate based fertilizers in the watershed) on metal removal. The results show that the 77% of lead and 58% of copper precipitated as the phosphate added to the contaminated water even before adding any media. Cedar mulch and hardwood mulch performed best and removed 99.2% of lead and 97.5% of copper from aqueous solution. When phosphate was added, removal increased to 97.8% for copper and 100% for lead (under detection limits). The removal capacity of metals was with the order of cedar mulch > hardwood mulch > pine mulch > sawdust > loam soil > silica sand. The leaching of metals from the media was much lower than the original solution and decreased when phosphate was added.

- MakaleAçık Erişim2013Scopus SJRQ4Column Studies on Effect of Phosphate Immobilization on Removal of Metals from Stormwater Runoff in Bioretention Cell
Demir, V.; Bin-Shafique, S.
Batch studies indicated that low cost native materials such as loam soil, juniper mulch, hardwood mulch, pine mulch and sawdust performed efficiently as media in bioretention cell for removal of copper and lead from stormwater runoff. Juniper mulch performed best in batch studies was used in column studies. Column studies suggested that the presence of phosphate has a pronounced effect on metal immobilization. This is due to the formation of metal phosphates that have extremely low solubility. The remaining metals were adsorbed on bioretention media of the bioretention cell. Breakthrough adsorption and desorption curves for lead and copper were measured in presence and absence of phosphate immobilization. Copper reached a breakthrough curve in around 20 days and lead in 30 days. Column studies showed that in all samples addition of phosphate also decreased the leaching of lead and copper back to aqueous solution consistent with lead and copper immobilization.

- MakaleAçık Erişim2013Scopus SJRQ4Bioaccumulation of Copper and Zinc in Freshwater Crayfish (Astacus leptodactylus) Fed with Zebra Mussels (Dreissena polymorpha) Collected from Keban Dam Lake, Turkey
Aksu, Onder; Gulec, Azime Kucukgul; Demir, Veysel; Danabas, Durali; Yildirim, Numan; Ozcelik, Mehtap; Can, Erkan; Kocabas, Mehmet
This study is aimed to determine the bioaccumulation of copper and zinc in hemolymph of freshwater crayfish (Astacus leptodactylus) fed with zebra mussel (Dreissena polymorpha) collected from Keban Dam Lake. This is the first study on bioaccumulation of Cu and Zn in hemolymph of males and females of A. leptodactylus. The average concentrations of Cu and Zn in the hemolymph samples were found out as 0.54 and 35.07 ppm respectively for male and 0.42 and 15.59 ppm respectively for female control freshwater crayfish. The levels of Zn in the hemolymph of both male and female ones among control and diet groups were statistically significant (P < 0.05). The Cu levels among control and diet groups in female ones were statistically significant (P < 0.05) but not in the male ones (P > 0.05). The results of current study revealed that feed treatment with boiling was not effective at the levels of metal bioaccumulation in hemolymph. It was observed that this metal bioaccumulation is more related with sex differences.

- MakaleYalnız künye2012Scopus SJRQ2Some Heavy Metals Accumulation in Tissues in Capoeta umbla (Heckel, 1843) from Uzuncayir Dam Lake (Tunceli, Turkey)
Ural, Mesut; Yildirim, Numan; Danabas, Durali; Kaplan, Olcay; Yildirim, Nuran Cikcikoglu; Ozcelik, Mehtap; Kurekci, Eylem Funda
Concentrations of metals were determined in the gills, liver, kidney, heart and muscle in Capoeta umbla caught from six stations from the Munzur River system. Metal concentrations in the tissues tended to vary significantly among stations (p < 0.05). Liver (Cu, 10.10 +/- A 0.23-23.03 +/- A 9.37 ppm; Zn, 14.67 +/- A 3.01-21.82 +/- A 2.39 ppm; Cd, 18.04 +/- A 4.56-52.69 +/- A 10.65 ppb and Fe, 28.87 +/- A 6.78-115.11 +/- A 34.87 ppm) and kidney (Cu, 1.80 +/- A 0.25-3.70 +/- A 0.62 ppm; Zn, 20.81 +/- A 0.37-29.36 +/- A 0.70 ppm; Cd, 132.06 +/- A 5.29-639.51 +/- A 20.14 ppb and Fe, 24.40 +/- A 1.98-59.39 +/- A 1.97 ppm) tissues showed higher metal concentrations than other tissues. It seems that metal contamination in the river is too high for the health of fish and the people who eat them. The geographical locations of catch, season, nature of diet, and the size of fish used for analyses might lead to different metal concentration in the same fish species.

- MakaleAçık Erişim2012Scopus SJRQ3DETERMINATION OF TRACE METALS IN PLANT LEAVES AS BIOMONITOR OF POLLUTION EXTENT BY A SENSITIVE STAT-AAS METHOD
Kaya, Gokce; Yaman, Mehmet
The aim of this study is to assess the potential of bioindicator/biomonitor plants to determine pollution extent of toxic metals. Lead, cadmium, and copper concentrations in the plants including Platanus sp., Olea europaea L., Vitis vinifera L., and Armeniaca sp. taken from the industrial area of the city of Gaziantep, Turkey, and control location were determined by using STAT-atomic absorption spectrometry. Lead concentration in leaves of Platanus sp. taken from 50m around the battery plant was found to be higher than 3,000 mg kg(-1). The observed Pb concentration in this plant was 40 times higher than that in Armeniaca sp. grown in the same location. The limits of detection for plants were found to be 0.050 mg kg(-1) for Pb and Cu and 0.005 mg kg(-1) for Cd. It was concluded that the Platanus sp. plant can be considered as both biomonitor and hyperaccumulator.
