Pollution estimation and health risks assessment related to the agricultural application of mussel shell-derived chitosan as organic amendment

Arslan Topal, E. Işil; Topal, Murat; Çelik, Erdal; Öbek, Erdal

In this study, estimation of pollution and assessment of health risks related to the agricultural application of mussel shell–derived chitosan as organic amendment were evaluated. Furthermore, considering WHO maximum permissible levels in soil, the application rates of chitosan to agricultural soils were calculated. Geo-accumulation index (Igeo), enrichment factor (EF), contamination factor (CF), pollution load index (PLI), and ecological risk index (ERI) were calculated. Mussel shell-derived chitosan generally did not contribute to soil metal loading when evaluated in terms of those indices. The highest hazard quotient for ingestion (HQing) across male (ML), female (FML), and children (CL) followed the order Cr > Ni > Mn >Pb >Zn >Cu, while maximum HQing among metals was observed in the order CL > FML > ML. For inhalation exposure, highest HQinh for all metals was also found in the order CL > FML > ML, with individual metal contributions following Mn > Ni > Cr >Zn >Pb >Cu. Maximum HQder exhibited the trend ML > FML > CL, and the metal-specific order for HQder was Cr > Pb > Ni >Zn >Mn >Cu. Hazard Index (HI) and Total HI for ingestion, inhalation and dermal exposure were all less than 1. Cancer risk was less than 1 × 10−6. Consequently, there were no pollution and health risks associated with the use of musselshell‑derived chitosan in agriculture as organic amendment.

Dietary exposure and health risk assessment of fumonisins through the consumption of maize and maize-based gluten-free products in individuals with celiac disease

Tuyben, Eylem Ezgi; Sevim, Sumeyra; Macit, Arife; Kizil, Mevlude

Introduction: Individuals with celiac disease (CD) must adhere to a gluten-free diet (GFD) and are therefore at high risk of fumonisin exposure due to their high consumption of maize and maize-based products. This study aimed to determine the concentrations of fumonisins (FB1, FB2, and FB3) in packaged gluten-free (GF) maize and maizebased products sold in Turkey and to assess dietary exposure and health risks in adults with CD using a probabilistic approach. Methods: Fumonisin concentrations of 51 GF products were analyzed by Enzyme-Linked Immonosorbent Assay (ELISA) and daily food consumption data were collected from 67 individuals with CD through a food frequency questionnaire. Exposure was estimated using Estimated Daily Intake (EDI) values and probabilistic risk assessment with Monte Carlo simulation. Results: The highest fumonisins concentrations were detected in the pasta/rice/bulgur group, while the flour/starch group was the food group contributed most to total fumonisins exposure due to higher consumption. Although the average EDI values were below the Tolerable Daily Intake (TDI; 1 μg/kg bw/day) set by European Food Safety Authority’s (EFSA) and Provisional maximum tolerable daily intakes (PMTDI; 2 μg/kg bw/day) established by Joint Expert Committee on Food Additives’s (JECFA) values, individuals at the 95th percentile approached 132.88–167.89% of the PMTDI value in the flour/starch group and 79.00–82.38% in the pasta/rice/bulgur group. Discussion: These findings highlight the need for continuous monitoring and stricter regulatory oversight and dietary guidance to protect vulnerable populations.

Influence of apple pomace and asparaginase on acrylamide levels in cookies and behavior during simulated gastric digestion: risk assessment perspectives

Sevim, Sumeyra; Macit, Arife; Farıa, Miguel A.; Viegas, Olga; Cunha, Sara C.; Kizil, Mevlude; Ferreira, Isabel M.P.L.V.O.

Cookies are widely consumed baked products; however, their contribution to dietary acrylamide (ACR) intake raises increasing health concerns. This study investigated the effects of apple pomace addition and asparaginase treatment on ACR levels in cookies, the fate of ACR during simulated gastric digestion using the INFOGEST semi-dynamic model, and the associated health risks of ACR exposure from cookie consumption. Risk assessment was conducted for adults (18–65 years) and children (3–10 years) using Monte Carlo simulation. Three formulations were evaluated: a control cookie, a cookie in which wheat flour was partially replaced with apple pomace, and a cookie containing asparaginase. Cookies formulated with apple pomace contained significantly lower ACR levels than the control (132 ± 8 μg/kg vs. 215 ± 11 μg/kg; p < 0.05), although the reduction was less pronounced than in cookies containing asparaginase (65 ± 14 μg/kg). During gastric digestion, ACR exhibited formulation-dependent release kinetics. Nevertheless, the total ACR released at the end of digestion was similar for control and pomace cookies, likely due to additional ACR formation in the stomach, despite differences in release patterns throughout digestion. Margin of Exposure (MOE) values for children remained well below 10,000, indicating a potential carcinogenic risk, although reductions of up to 59% were observed for control and pomace cookies after digestion. Target Hazard Quotient (THQ) values showed a slight increase after digestion in both age groups but remained below 1, suggesting no concern for chronic toxicity. Control cookies indicated a potential carcinogenic risk for children (ILCR = 1.56 × 10−4), whereas pomace and asparaginase formulations reduced this risk (ILCR = 9.59 × 10−5 and 4.72 × 10−5, respectively). However, simulated gastric digestion increased ILCR values for both control and pomace cookies (2.24 × 10−4 and 2.33 × 10−4, respectively). These findings indicate that dietary exposure to ACR cannot be assessed solely based on its concentration in food, and that digestive kinetics should be incorporated into health risk assessment.

A risk assessment model with dependent failure modes for the manufacturing and design processes of medical equipment

Lo, Huai-Wei; Gul, Muhammet; Yucesan, Melih; Liaw, Ching-Fang

The reliability of medical equipment is paramount for surgical success. Manufacturers are continuously exploring risk assessment and improvement strategies to prevent equipment malfunctions during surgery. Failure mode and effects analysis (FMEA) can primarily be divided into two types: DFMEA (Design FMEA) and PFMEA (Process FMEA). Traditional FMEA serves as a practical tool for identifying and prioritizing key failure modes (FMs). However, past FMEA research has overlooked the interdependencies among FMs, treating them as independent entities, which does not align with real-world operations. This paper introduces a groundbreaking risk dependency assessment model aimed at addressing the influential relationships among FMs. The modified technique for defining the influential relationship of failure modes (modified TEDIR-FMs) is developed to compute the relative risk scores of different FMs accurately. At its core, this paper integrates concepts from multiple criteria decision-making (MCDM) techniques into FMEA, with a particular focus on the interdependencies of failure modes in the manufacturing and design manufacturing processes of medical equipment. The model’s application is demonstrated through a case study on a medical device for hernia surgery. The introduction of modified TEDIR-FMs not only enhances the accuracy of risk assessments but also offers a fresh perspective on risk management within the design and manufacturing processes. The research results indicate that the three failure modes with the highest risk are “adhesive does not deploy or only partially deploys from the dispenser,” “the mesh does not adhere to the adhesive,” and “the adhesive drips from the tip.” In the manufacturing and design processes of this device, greater attention should be given to improving the adhesive components.

Ochratoxin a levels in Turkish coffee: a probabilistic health risk assessment via Monte Carlo simulation

Sevim, Sumeyra; Macit, Arife; Kizil, Mevlude

Throughout history, Turkish coffee has been the most widely consumed type of coffee in Turkey. Therefore, the goal of this study was to determine the amount of ochratoxin A (OTA) present in Turkish coffee and to analyze any potential health hazards. A total of 41 Turkish coffees were collected and analyzed for OTA activity using a competitive enzyme immunoassay (ELISA). Furthermore, dietary exposure and health risk assessments for the Turkish population were calculated based on analytical results and coffee consumption data from the Turkish Nutrition and Health Survey 2019 (TNHS-2019) in three age categories (15–18, 19–64, and 65 + years). Nine of the samples contained more than 2.5 μg/kg OTA, with an average of 5.24 μg/kg. The OTA concentration in 3 samples exceeded the permissible maximum limit (5 μg/kg) established by Turkish legislation, and the mean concentration was 8.41 μg/kg. A margin of exposure (MOE) approach was used for risk characterization, considering both non-neoplastic and neoplastic consequences. There were no concerns about health risks because MOEs were more than 10,000 for all categories. Although the levels of OTA analyzed in Turkish coffee did not pose a risk to individuals in the three age categories, emphasis should be placed on minimizing and controlling OTA concentrations in Turkish coffee. Additionally, it is also necessary to consider other food sources that could contribute to OTA exposure.

A Multi-parameter Occupational Safety Risk Assessment Model for Chemicals in the University Laboratories by an MCDM Sorting Method

Gul, Muhammet; Yucesan, Melih; Karacahan, Mehmet Kayra

University laboratories are high-risk working environments where many chemicals coexist to conduct teaching and scientific research. The frequent occurrence of such chemical-related occupational accidents in recent times highlights the importance of ensuring these units’ safety in universities for researchers, students, workplaces, and institutions. In occupational safety risk assessment, very few studies have grouped risks. Many of them also ignored some important risk parameters. Overcoming these disadvantages, this study developed a multi-parameter and multi-criteria decision-making (MCDM) sorting-based methodology for the occupational safety risk assessment of chemicals in a university laboratory. First, six different risk parameters (probability, severity, exposure, detectability, worsening factor, sensitivity to non-usage of personal protective equipment) were determined. The weight value was calculated using the best–worst method (BWM). Then, a risk priority value and classification for each chemical with TOPSIS-Sort, the MCDM sorting method. Finally, some control measures are recommended to reduce the safety risk of the laboratory. The applicability of the proposed methodology has been tested with a real case study. The methodology is intended to adapt to university laboratories’ risk assessment and become a primary reference for university safety analysts.

Occupational health, safety and environmental risk assessment in textile production industry through a Bayesian BWM-VIKOR approach

Ak, M. Fatih; Yucesan, Melih; Gul, Muhammet

Occupational risk assessment (ORA) is a process that consists of evaluating, ranking, and classifying the hazards and associated risks arising in any workplace from the viewpoint of occupational health and safety. Many ORA methods have been proposed in the literature, from a single independent expert to participatory methodologies made by group decision and simple to complex ones. In this paper, a holistic ORA is presented, which uses two important multi-attribute decision methods named Bayesian Best-Worst Method (Bayesian BWM) and VIseKriterijumska Optimizacija I Kompromisno Resenje (VIKOR). Bayesian BWM is used to determine the importance weights of six different assessment criteria, which are the probability of hazardous event (P), frequency (F), severity (S), detectability (D), cost (C) and sensitivity not to use personal protective equipment (SNP). Since the classical BWM finds solution to the weights of a number of criteria from only one expert's judgment, Bayesian BWM is preferred in this paper (1) to enable participation of a group of experts, (2) to aggregate the preferences of these multiple experts into consensus without loss of information and (3) to follow a probabilistic way for solving the ORA problem. The hazards are then ranked by VIKOR. The approach is implemented in the ORA process of a textile production plant. Results of risk analysis showed that electricity hazard and associated risks constitute the highest risk ratings. These hazards arise from the product, process, human and working environment. The associated risks are evaluated, prioritized, and detailed control measures are proposed. This study made comparisons with the classical BWM-VIKOR approach to demonstrate the proposed approach's difference and practicality. Results can also help practitioners and risk analysts in formulating the improvement measures to increase the overall safety of the working environment further.

Cadmium exposure in population: alcoholic beverage consumption and health risk assessment

Kaplan Ince, Olcay; Ince, Muharrem; Onal, Ali

Risk assessment of cadmium (Cd) for human health play a key role because of toxic effect. Researchers are undergoing constant development for modelling approaches to make a risk assessment. It was carried out a central composite design combining with response surface modeling to optimize and modeling of Cd2+ ions in this study. Also, this study was performed to provide information about possible risk associated with alcoholic beverage consumption. Some independent process parameters including contact time and pH were chosen for optimization. Under optimal parameters, 142.9 mg g−1 was determined as Cd2+ ions removal effectiveness. Significance independent parameters and their interactions were checked using analysis of variance. These results were verified by correlation coefficients (R2 = 0.9967) of the statistical prediction. Estimated daily intake (EDI) and target hazard quotients (THQ) were calculated, to assess health risk. The Cd2+ ions EDI values (µg/day/person) were less than the recommended dietary allowance values and also, its THQ value was less than 1, also. When the obtained results compared with the levels set by regulatory authorities, the studied alcoholic beverages consumption do not pose a toxicological risk. Sanyurek, Nesrin Karaca; Ince, Olcay Kaplan; Aydogdu, Burcu; Ince, Muharrem

Free radicals are responsible for many health problems, especially oxidative stress-related diseases. With conscious nutrition and the use of natural antioxidants, it is now possible to cope with these diseases or minimize their effects. The aim of this study was to determine pH, total acidity, total SO2, free SO2, relative SO2, dry matter, density, alcohol content, reducing sugar, ash, CUPRAC, DPPH free radical scavenging capacity, total phenolic content, elemental composition, and some phenolic compounds of Syriac (Mardin) wines. Estimated daily intake (EDI), target hazard quotients (THQ), total target hazard quotients (TTHQ), and relative risk (RR) were calculated, to assess a health risk resulting from regular consumption of Syriac wines. The elements EDI values through consumption of wines were less than the recommended dietary allowance values. Obtained THQ values were less than 1. When the obtained results are compared with the levels set by regulatory authorities, the investigated wine consumption does not pose a toxicological risk based on EDI, THQ, TTHQ, and RR values. In addition, this study showed that the Syriac wine’s antioxidant capacities are high and rich in phenolic compounds and elements.

A MCDM Based on Goal Programming and GIS-Based Risk Assessment for the Evaluation of Educational Locations in Conflict Areas

    Hallak, Jamil; Polat, Elifcan Göçmen

Conflict is recognized as a major barrier in socio-economic development. In conflict situations, most sectors such as health, food, shelter and education are adversely affected. The provision of education services to conflict-affected children saves them from becoming a lost generation and contributes to community building. Thus, we conducted this research to investigate the potential of a GIS (Geographic Information Systems) approach and risk assessment based multi-criteria decision making (MCDM) for the allocation of displaced dropped-out children to the most appropriate educational centres, taking into account multiple goals related to cost, distance, risk, etc. A two-stage approach was adopted, utilizing a risk assessment approach, and a location-allocation approach. The risk assessment approach was carried out using GIS and F-AHP (Fuzzy Analytic Hierarchy Process) to determine the risk value of each candidate educational centre in the conflict area. In the location-allocation stage, a mathematical model was developed to allocate all demands to the chosen centres. All presented methods were computationally conducted on real case data provided by direct beneficiaries and stakeholders in the 26 sub-districts in the Idleb governorate, Syria. The computational results demonstrate that the proposed approaches ensure practical and theoretical impacts.

Fermatean fuzzy TOPSIS-based approach for occupational risk assessment in manufacturing

Gul, Muhammet; Lo, Huai-Wei; Yucesan, Melih

The importance of risk assessment in the context of occupational health and safety by manufacturing operators strengthens their hands in solving the problems they may encounter in business processes related to health and safety. One of the most important phases of conducting an exhaustive occupational risk assessment is to analyze potential hazards and associated risks quantitatively. Since manufacturing is one of the industries that require workers to be highly exposed to work, creating a safer environment to reduce occupational injuries is an important task. This study proposes a novel fuzzy risk assessment approach developed by integrating Fermatean fuzzy sets (FFSs) and technique for order preference by similarity to ideal solution (TOPSIS) method for ranking potential hazards in manufacturing. FFSs are a new version of fuzzy set theory that covers the intuitionistic fuzzy sets and Pythagorean fuzzy sets. This version of the fuzzy set is crucial in the decision-making process to handle uncertain information more easily and reflect uncertainty better. A linguistic scale under Fermatean fuzzy documentation has also been developed for experts/decision makers to disclose their judgments easily. Occupational risk analysts can benefit from this approach since FFSs are used for the first time in occupational risk assessment, and the approach is presented in integration with TOPSIS. The proposed approach is applied in the aluminum plate-manufacturing process risk assessment. In the conclusion of the implementation, risks arising in the production are prioritized. In addition, this study made comparisons with other fuzzy methods to demonstrate the proposed approach’s difference and practicality. This study’s results can support practitioners and risk analysts in formulating the improvement measures to increase the safety of the work environment further.

Hazard identification, risk assessment and control for dam construction safety using an integrated BWM and MARCOS approach under interval type-2 fuzzy sets environment

    Celik, Erkan; Gul, Muhammet

Undoubtedly, dams are one of the projects developed by people to make optimal water use and generate hydroelectric energy power. In addition to the importance of detailed project planning, faultless production, and optimal working conditions in dam constructions, it is equally important to identify and analyze the risks from the occupational health and safety (OHS) perspective that may arise during construction and operation. In this context, hazard identification, risk analysis, and control, which are the main issues of dam safety, have gained importance. In this study, a novel approach is developed for dam construction safety. Two newly proposed multi-criteria decision-making (MCDM) methods of “Best-Worst Method-BWM” and “measurement of alternatives and ranking to Compromise solution-MARCOS”, are merged under the context of interval type-2 fuzzy sets (IT2FSs). Severity and probability, two essential parameters of the risk score, have been weighted using BWM. Subsequently, the priority orders of hazards have been determined by the MARCOS. In implementing the approach to the blasting process in dam construction, several control measures are suggested for stakeholders. Some comparative works and sensitivity analyses are performed to test the approach's validity and solidity from the methodological viewpoint.

Systems failure analysis using Z-number theory-based combined compromise solution and full consistency method

Yousefi, Samuel; Valipour, Mahsa; Gul, Muhammet

Financial and time constraints force managers to put limited failure modes in priority to implement corrective and preventive actions. Thus, how prioritization can be done more constructively is of particular importance. This study aims to introduce an improved Failure Modes and Effects Analysis (FMEA) technique based on an extension of the Combined Compromise Solution (CoCoSo) method and the Full Consistency Method (FUCOM) to assess and prioritize failures in a production process. These developed methods called Z-CoCoSo and Z-FUCOM rely on the Z-number theory. They can consider uncertainty and reliability simultaneously in determining the weights of risk factors and the value of these factors in the studied problem. The proposed approach can cover some shortcomings of the conventional FMEA technique employed in identifying potential failures before their occurrence. Applying this approach enables experts to consider different weights for risk factors and uncertainty in the risk assessment process and provides them with a reliable ranking with high separability. Implementing the introduced approach for a real case study in the automotive parts industry has been compared with FMEA and other existent versions of the used methods demonstrating its reliable prioritization.

Application of Pythagorean fuzzy AHP and VIKOR methods in occupational health and safety risk assessment: the case of a gun and rifle barrel external surface oxidation and colouring unit

    Gul, Muhammet

The field of occupational health and safety (OHS) focuses on reducing occupational accidents to an acceptable level. OHS covers systematic efforts aimed at providing employee health, safety and welfare in the workplace. This study proposes a new approach for risk assessment in the field of OHS. It integrates the Pythagorean fuzzy analytic hierarchy process (PFAHP) and fuzzy VlseKriterijumska Optimizacija I Kompromisno Resenje (FVIKOR) into a risk assessment process. The PFAHP is used in weighting the risk parameters. FVIKOR is then applied to prioritize the hazards. To demonstrate the applicability and validity of the proposed approach, a case study of a barrel external surface oxidation and colouring unit of a gun and rifle production facility is performed. A comparison is also provided between the proposed approach and an intuitionistic fuzzy sets-based approach. The proposed approach is found to produce reliable outcomes that better represent the vagueness of the decision-making process.

Development and application of a novel hybrid occupational risk assessment model

    Gul, Muhammet

Occupational Risk Assessment (ORA) is so crucial for safety management in the weapons industry since numerous hazards may lead to human casualties. Therefore, occupational health and safety stakeholders suggest proactive approaches in reducing risks to an acceptable level. Therefore, this paper aims to develop a novel hybrid ORA model for the weapons industry. The approach merges TODIM with Fine-Kinney concept. Risk parameters used in traditional Fine-Kinney method are weighted by Fuzzy Analytic Hierarchy Process (FAHP). Then, hazards and associated risks are prioritised using the approach. As an illustration, the gun and rifle assembly line of a weapon factory is handled. The application is carried out to improve operational safety and protect employee health. From both theoretical and practice aspects, it contributes to the literature by handling the problem in an integrated style of Fine-Kinney, FAHP and TODIM and by improving overall safety level of the observed factory and by suggesting potential action plans.

An FMEA-based TOPSIS approach under single valued neutrosophic sets for maritime risk evaluation: the case of ship navigation safety

Başhan, Veysi; Demirel, Hakan; Gul, Muhammet

As in terrestrial facilities, safety is one of the most important issue in ships. Vessels navigating in many parts of the world face many different, tough and dangerous navigational risks. In this context, twenty-three fundamental risks which are frequently encountered in ship navigation were considered in this study and examined by an FMEA-based TOPSIS approach under single valued neutrosophic sets. Because of the lack of data in the literature, the opinions of the experts (Masters) who have many years of experience in the sector were taken. As a result of the study, extreme weather conditions, injury of crew, loss of input of sensory equipment (depth, gyro, speed etc.), struck by ropes, exposure to high speed machineries under high pressures, loss of maneuverability are very important among these risks. Considering these risks, corrective-preventive action plans and managerial implications for ship navigation have been presented. Consequently, the results of this study have an important warning and solution recommendation regarding ship navigation risks.

A risk assessment approach using both stochastic data and subjective judgments

Mete, Suleyman; Oz, Nurdan Ece; Gul, Muhammet; Serin, Faruk; Celik, Erkan; Kahraman, C.; Cevik Onar, S.; Oztaysi, B.; Sari, I.U.; Cebi, S.

Risk assessment describes the overall process regarding identifying hazards and risk factors that have the potential to cause harm, analyzing and evaluating the risk associated with that hazard and determining appropriate ways to eliminate the hazard or control the risk. In the literature, lots of approaches are proposed to prioritize hazards and associated risks quantitatively. Fuzzy sets-based multi-criteria decision-making approaches are forefront that they have the ability in expressing the risks verbally based on decision-maker’s opinions and judgments. MCDA-based risk assessment approaches explain different types of uncertainties, which are generally modeled using stochastic analysis or fuzzy sets. The stochastic analysis is more suitable in modelling the probabilistic uncertainty. Therefore, in this study, a risk assessment approach using both stochastic data and subjective judgments is proposed, and a case study is also performed in a construction project. The VIKOR method is extended and a new risk assessment approach is developed where part of the data is stochastic. A three-year data is used to determine a fitted probability distribution of respected frequency. Evaluation of risks with respect to severity and probability parameters are then made by subjective judgments. In conclusion, a risk prioritization and potential action plan suggestion is performed.

A fuzzy-based occupational health and safety risk assessment framework and a case study in an international port authority

    Gul, Muhammet

Ports are complex systems that play a crucial role in the transportation of maritime-related products and services. Since ports face various safety issues in design, installation, operation and maintenance processes, there are many aspects open for improvement in Occupational Health and Safety risk assessment and it is required to deal with risks, reduce them to an acceptable level and control. To struggle with emerging risks and manage this process better, a risk assessment framework is proposed for ports in this study. A case study is performed in a Turkish international port authority using the proposed framework. Fuzzy Analytic Hierarchy Process (FAHP), which is a commonly used fuzzy multi-criteria decision-making method, was used in weighting two risk factors: likelihood and severity. The orders of priority of hazards were then determined by a fuzzy-based VIKOR method based on the output of FAHP. The proposed framework overcomes some drawbacks, including a lack of assignment on the weight to two risk assessment factors and lack of the high dependence of the prioritisation on the experts’ opinions. To validate the results, a sensitivity analysis was conducted. In conclusion, the study contributes to the applicability of the proposed framework to assess the risks in ports and provides a distinct risk prioritisation.

A fuzzy-based model for risk assessment of routes in oil transportation

    Gul, M.; Guneri, A.F.; Nasirli, S. Miralp

The transportation of oil is the final step that the oil is taken before it is distributed to consumer. Road transport is a type of oil transportation methods, and transfers between facilities of primary and secondary bases are carried out by tanker trucks. A particular advantage of tanker trucks is that they provide direct travel from the source to the destination. However, road transport involves possible hazards for population and environment. At this point, this study presents a fuzzy-based risk assessment model for the routes in an oil transportation company. Fuzzy analytic hierarchy process, which is a commonly used multi-criteria decision-making method, is applied in weighting nine criteria related to the road characteristics. Then, risk scores for eleven different routes which the tanker trucks of the company followed are determined by using a basic multi-criteria scoring method. Results of the case study emerge that the most important criterion is narrow road. The riskiest route for the company has been determined. In order to reduce risks to an acceptable level, a number of control measures are suggested such as to assign experienced drivers for this route, provide regular training for drivers, make regular vehicle maintenance and transport large quantities at one time as possible. To demonstrate validity, a comparison is also provided between the proposed approach and Pythagorean fuzzy analytic hierarchy process-based risk scoring model. In conclusion, this study contributes to the applicability of fuzzy analytic hierarchy process to assess riskiness for routes in oil transportation.

Risk assessment for clearing and grading process of a natural gas pipeline project: An extended TOPSIS model with Pythagorean fuzzy sets for prioritizing hazards

Oz, Nurdan Ece; Mete, Suleyman; Serin, Faruk; Gul, Muhammet

A natural gas pipeline project is a broad construction system consisting of both offshore and onshore section, which aims to supply the natural gas to one country to another. In such these projects, main focus of the works should cover workplace, environment, health, and safety of workers and employers. To achieve this, a new occupational health and safety (OHS) risk assessment is necessary for reducing the negative effects of emerged risks. In this article, a fuzzy-based risk model is developed for prioritizing primary and residual risk. A two-dimensional (2D) risk matrix method is initially performed and the Pythagorean fuzzy technique for order preference by similarity to ideal solution (PFTOPSIS) method is then used to prioritize previously identified hazards. For the prioritization of primary and residual risks, hazards are assessed against two parameters (probability and severity) of 2D risk matrix. Unlike previous risk assessment studies, PFTOPSIS is applied for the first time. The fuzzy model is applied to a case study for clearing and grading process of a natural gas pipeline project. A sensitivity analysis is also performed on parameter weights in order to validate the model.
