A new chelating ligand, 5,5-dimethyl-2-(2-(3-nitrophenyl)hydrazono)cyclohexane-1,3-dione (L), and four transition metal complexes were synthesized. The ligand and its complexes were characterized by IR, H-1 and C-13-NMR spectra, elemental analyses, magnetic susceptibility, mass spectra, UV-Vis. and thermogravimetry-differential thermal analysis (TGA-DTA). The metal complexes showed different geometric structures. Antibacterial tests of the ligand and complexes were also done. The Zn(II) complexes showed antibacterial activity against Staphylococcus aureus ATCC-25923 at middle level. The optical properties of the ligand and its complexes were extensively investigated by optical measurements. The average transmittance value of the ligand was the highest value, while the average transmittance value of the [CuL2(NO3)(2)]center dot 6H(2)O complex was the lowest value. The optical band gap of the ligand, [(Zn)(2)L(OH)(4)]center dot 2DMF, [ZnL(NO3)(2)(H2O)(2)]center dot 5H(2)O, [CuL2(OAc)]center dot OAc center dot 3.5H(2)O and [CuL2(NO3)(2)]center dot 6H(2)O complexes were calculated and 3.121 eV, 2.180 eV, 1.551 eV, 2.489 eV and 1.556 eV values were found, respectively. The complexes decreased the optical band gap of the ligand. The optical band gap value of the [ZnL(NO3)(2)(H2O)(2)]center dot 5H(2)O complex is the lowest value. The optical band gap value of the ligand is the highest value. The complexes decrease the angle of incidence of the ligand, while complexes increase the angle of refraction of the ligand. The electric susceptibility of the ligand decreases with its complexes.

Ethnopharmacological relevance: This paper provides significant ethnobotanical information on medicinal plants in the Gecitli Township in the Eastern Anatolia Region. Recording such data calls for urgency this is the first ethnobotanical study in which statistical calculations about plants are carried out by means of the FIC method in Eastern (Hakkari) part of Turkey. Aim of the study This study aims to identify the wild plants collected for medicinal purposes by locals of Gecitli which is located in the Eastern Anatolia Region of Turkey, and to identify the uses and local names of these wild plants. Materials and methods: A field study had been carried out for a period of approximately 2 years (20082010). During this period, 70 plants taxa and one mushroom were collected. Demographic characteristics of participants, names of the local plants, their utilized parts and preparation methods were investigated and recorded. The plant taxa were collected within the scope of the study; and herbarium materials were prepared. In addition, the relative significance value of the taxa was determined, and informant consensus factor (FIC) was calculated for the medicinal plants included in the study. Results: We have found out in the literature review of the plants included in our study that 70 plant taxa and one mushroom are already used for medicinal purposes while 11 plants are not available among the records in the literature. The most common families are Asteraceae, Apiaceae, Lamiaceae, Rosaceae, Euphorbiaceae, Fabaceae, and Malvaceae. We include in our study and report for the first time the medicinal uses of Alchemilla hessii Rothm., Cirsium pubigerum (Desf.) DC. var. spinosum Pet., Diplotaenia cachrydifolia Boiss., Euphorbia macrocarpa Boiss. & Buhse, Galium consanguineum Boiss., Inula helenium L subsp. vanensis Grierson, Johrenia dichotoma DC. subsp. sintenisii Bornm., Pelargonium quercetorum Agnew, Rosa heckeliana Tratt subsp. vanheurckiana (Crep.) O. Nilsson, Salts aegyptiaca L, Taraxacum montanum (C.A. Mey.) DC. Names of local plants in Turkey vary especially due to vernaculars. The plants that the locals of Gecitli use are called with the same or different local names in various parts of Anatolia. Conclusion: We found out that locals living in the research area use for therapeutic purpose 70 plants taxa and one mushroom which belong to 28 families. Turkish citizens with different ethnic backgrounds took the questionnaire. These people use these wild plants in treatment of several diseases. Comparison of the data obtained in this study with the experimental data obtained in the previous laboratory studies on the wild plants which grow in Gecitli proved ethnobotanical usages to a great extent. Literature review indicated that the therapeutic plants that grow in Gecitli are used in different parts of the world for the treatment of similar diseases. (C) 2014 Elsevier Ireland Ltd. Effects of Modified Atmosphere Packaging on Shelf Life of Turkish Delight (Lokum)

Dereli, Zeynep; Sevik, Ramazan; Batu, Ali; Gök, Veli

Turkish delight is a sugar-based jellylike confection that has been produced for hundreds of years. In this study, four different modified atmospheres were created in order to extend the shelf life of Turkish delight. Microbiological analyses and sensory evaluations were conducted at the beginning of storage and at 7-day intervals thereafter. Microbiological analyses showed that the numbers of total mesophilic aerobic bacteria within samples stored in a modified atmosphere of 30% CO2 plus 70% N-2 were lower than in the other modified atmospheres. According to sensory evaluations, the samples kept in a modified atmosphere of 50% CO2 plus 50% N-2 were unacceptable after the 21st day of storage, whereas those kept in modified atmospheres of both 25% CO2 plus 75% N-2 and 30% CO2 plus 70% N-2 were found to be acceptable even after 30 days of storage.

THE EFFECTS HYDROXYUREA DERIVATIVE SCHIFF BASES ON FATTY ACIDS AND LYPOPHILIC VITAMINS IN LIVER OF RATS

Turkoglu, Semra; Parlak, Akif E.; Yildirim, Isil; Karagozoglu, Yusuf; Alayunt, Naci O.

Schiff bases and their metal complexes have antiviral, antimicrobial, antitumoral, radical scavenging and antioxidant activities. In this study, effects of Schiff base ligand and its metal complexes on the fatty acids and lyphophlilic vitamins of the liver of rats were investigated. The fatty acids of the liver were determined by GC and lyphophlilic vitamins of the liver determined by HPLC. The amounts of stearic acid (18:0), oleic acid (18:1) and monounsaturated fatty acids (MUFA) considerably decreased in the Mn, Ni and Zn complexes groups, whereas the amount of linolenic acid (18:3) and eicosatrienoic acid (20:3) considerably increased in the Ni an Zn complexes groups compared to the control group (P<0.01). However, there was no significant difference (P>0.05) in the amounts of arachidonic acid (20:4), docosahexaenoic acid (22:6), total saturated fatty acids (SFA) and polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA), total omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids between groups. The amounts of vitamin K-1, vitamin D-2 considerably increased (P<0.05) in the Mn and Ni complexes groups as compared to the control. It was observed that the amount of a-tocopherol increased both in the Ni and Co complexes groups when compared to the control group but this increase was parallel to the amount in the same groups (P<0.05). As a result, it can be think that with the application of toxic metals such as manganese, cupper, nickel, cobalt, and zinc unsaturated fatty acids affected the activities of enzymes which are in the liver tissue and in charge in the fatty acid chain elongation.

The probiotics are very important for aquaculture because of their role in enhancing the fish health status, improving disease resistance, growth performance, and body composition, reducing malformations, improving gut morphology and the overall microbial balance. The objective of the presently reported study was to investigate effects of kefir as a probiotic product on the digestive and hepatic enzyme activities, as well as glucose level of Coruh trout, Salmo coruhensis Turan, Kottelat et Engin, 2010. The experiment was performed with four treatments: control group (no kefir), D1, D2, and D3 (kefir-supplemented diet: 10, 20, and 40 g . kg(-1) fish body mass, respectively). The activity of: alanine aminotransferase (ALT), aspartate aminotranferase (AST), lactate dehydrogenase (LDH), lipase, amylase-as well as the glucose levels were determined after 4 months. The results indicated that glucose levels (P < 0.05) and digestive enzymes (lipase and amylase) in the blood serum decreased in fish fed diets containing kefir (P > 0.05). On the contrary, the activity of liver enzymes (ALT, AST, and LDH) increased insignificantly (P > 0.05). In conclusion, digestive and liver enzyme activities were affected by quantitative changes in dietary kefir insignificantly but further research is needed to establish whether the liver and digestive enzyme physiology of Coruh trout can be affected by kefir-supplemented diets in a long-term trial.

Automatic recognition system of underlying causes of power quality disturbances based on S-Transform and Extreme Learning Machine

Eristi, Huseyin; Yildirim, Ozal; Eristi, Belkis; Demir, Yakup

In this paper, a new S-Transform and Extreme Learning Machine (ST-ELM)-based event recognition approach for the purpose of classifying power quality (PQ) event signals automatically has been proposed. In this approach, the distinctive features of the PQ event signals have been obtained with the S-Transform-based feature extraction. The feature vector obtained with feature extraction has been applied as input to the ELM classifier. Ten different classification procedures were determined within the framework of this study to assess the performance of the ELM classifier on PQ event data. Real PQ event data and synthetic PQ event data obtained from MATIAB/Simulink environment have been used in these procedures. Also, three different PQ event data sets, which are formed by adding noises of 20, 30 and 50 dB to the synthetic PQ event data respectively, have been used in order to assess the performance of the proposed approach on noisy conditions. According to the results of performance evaluations, the proposed ST-ELM-based PQ event recognition system has a very high performance of recognizing PQ event data. Besides, classification of noisy data showed that the proposed approach is robust at recognizing noisy data. The performance of the ST-ELM-based recognition system on PQ data shows that this approach has an effective recognition structure that can be used in real power systems. (C) 2014 Elsevier Ltd. Sensorless vector control of PMSM with non-sinusoidal flux using observer based on FEM

Oksuztepe, Eyyup; Omac, Zeki; Kurum, Hasan

Back electromotive force method has been widely used in the position and speed sensorless control of permanent magnet synchronous motors. In this method, it is supposed that the back electromotive forces induced on the stator windings by the rotor permanent magnets are sinusoidal. This assumption causes errors in the estimation of speed and position. In this paper, an observer using the stator winding linkage flux model obtained by using finite element method for position and speed sensorless field-oriented control of permanent magnet motor is proposed. The validity of the proposed method is demonstrated using DS 1104.

NMR Proton Spin-Lattice Relaxation Mechanism in D2O Solutions of Albumin Determined at 400 MHz

    Yilmaz, A.; Zengin, B.; Ulak, F. Sadan

T-1 values in pure D2O and D2O solutions of human serum albumin (HSA) were measured versus temperature. A formula was derived based on H-H interactions between the surface HDO and non-exchangeable protein protons. The formula was used to evaluate the average distance of the interactions (rav). The effective correlation times were then derived by replacing the experimental data in the formula. Short correlation times obtained for the solution with low HSA (0.02 g albumin for one ml of D2O) decreased from 53 to 29 ps, while longer times increased from 1.19 to 2.22 ns. They are of the order of a fraction of a nanosecond for the solution with high HSA (0.08 g albumin per one ml of D2O). The perfect consistency between the derived theory and experimental data indicates that the high-field 1/T-1 in D2O solutions of albumin is caused by dipolar interactions between the surface HDO and non-exchangeable protein protons. It also suggests that the effective correlation time of the surface HDO is of the order of the mean lifetime of short-lived surface water.

Use of Clove Oil and Eugenol to Anesthetize Fingerling Shabut Barbus grypus

Ögretmen, Fatih; Gölbasi, Selami; Inanan, Burak E.; Kizak, Volkan; Kayim, Murathan

In this study, the efficacy of four doses of clove oil and eugenol were compared to sedate fingerling Shabut Barbus grypus to various stages of sedation and recovery. The results from the present study indicated that effective concentrations were at 50L/L for eugenol (induction time: 58 8s; recovery time: 199 +/- 15s [mean +/- SD]) and clove oil (induction time: 76 +/- 6s; recovery time: 161 +/- 34s). The induction times decreased significantly with the increasing concentrations of clove oil and eugenol, while recovery times increased with increasing concentrations of anesthetic (P < 0.05). Exposure of fish to 75 or 100L/L clove oil or to 50, 75, or 100L/L eugenol resulted in mean induction times 1min. Fish did not become fully sedated within 3min when treated with 25L/L clove oil. Other concentrations of both anesthetics, fish reached to full induction at 3min and recovered from anesthesia 5min. Our results showed the clove oil and eugenol are effective anesthetics for fingerling Shabut when used at concentrations of 50-100L/L. Received March 25, 2013; accepted July 5, 2013

An organic-inorganic rectifying contact based on a ZnPc derivative

Ozerden, Enise; Yildiz, Mustafa; Ocak, Yusuf Selim; Tombak, Ahmet; Kilicoglu, Tahsin

An organic-inorganic rectifying contact was fabricated by forming a thin film of a Zinc Phthalocyanine (ZnPc) derivative, Zinc 2,3,9,10,16,17,23,24-octakis(octyloxy)-29H, 31H-phthalocyanine (oc-ZnPc), on a p-Si wafer and evaporating Al on the structure. The current-voltage (I-V) and capacitance-voltage (C-V) measurements of Al/oc-ZnPc/p-Si structure were taken in dark at room temperature. The I-V measurements proved that the structure showed excellent rectification. Some basic diode parameters like ideality factor and barrier height were calculated from lnI-V plot. Ideality factor and barrier height values were found as 144 and 0.78 eV, respectively. The series resistance value of the structure was determined as 5.46 k Omega by means of Norde functions. The C-V measurements were taken for various frequencies and it was seen that the capacitance value decreased with increasing frequency. In addition I-V measurements of the Al/oc-ZaPc/p-Si/Al were repeated under light which had illumination intensity of 40-100 mW/cm(2). It was observed that reverse bias current of the diode increased with the light intensity. Therefore, the structure showed photodiode characteristics and it can be used for electrical and optoelectronic applications. (C) 2014 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Gulec, Azime Kucukgul; Erecevit, Pinar; Yuce, Ebru; Arslan, Ali; Bagci, Eyup; Kirbag, Sevda

The chemical composition of hydro distilled essential oil from Origanum acutidens (Hand. and Mazz.) Ietswaart was collected from Tunceli (Turkey) were analyzed by GC and GC-MS. Essential oil and methanol extract of Origanum acutidens were tested against Yersinia ruckeri (ATCC 29473), Aeromonas hydrophila (ATCC 607920), Lactococcus garviae (ATCC 43921) Staphylococcus aureus (ATCC 29213) fish pathogenic bacterial strains. The analysis of the essential oil of Origanum acutidens showed the presence of 6 components accounting for 93.8 % of the total amount. Calvacrol (61.8 %), p-cymene (15.5 %) and thymol (12.7 %) that possessed antimicrobial activity were found as the major component. The final concentrations of the methanol extract and the essential oil were determined by using disk diffusion assay. Mean inhibition zones of bacterial strains for Origanum acutidens essential oil varied from 28.0 +/- 1.2 and 36.7 +/- 0.7 mm. The inhibition zones of methanol extract (10 mu L and 20 mu L) of Origanum acutidens against bacterial strains were in the range 8.7 +/- 0.7 - 11.0 +/- 0.6 mm and 12.7 +/- 0.67 - 22.7 +/- 1.3 mm, respectively. Our results suggest that both the methanol extract and the essential oil of Origanum acutidens may be valuable as potential antibacterial agents against the major fish pathogens.
