- MakaleYalnız künye2020Scopus SJRQ1Effects of Zn and ZnO Nanoparticles on Artemia salina and Daphnia magna Organisms: Toxicity, Accumulation and Elimination
Danabas, Durali; Ates, Mehmet; Ertit Tastan, Burcu; Cicek Cimen, Isil Canan; Unal, Ilkay; Aksu, Onder; Kutlu, Banu
In the study, Zn in the size of 40–60 nm and 80–100 nm and ZnO in the size of 10–30 nm were applied to A. salina and D. magna individuals in 7 groups with 3 repetitions. Measurements were made at 24th, 48th and 72nd hours and elimination values were examined at +24 h. LC50 values of NPs were determined and chemical analysis (metal accumulation and elimination), ion quantities which were given to the environment and the survival rates of organisms were determined after the exposure. According to the results of phase contrast microscopy, it was found that both experimental organisms absorbed the NPs in the medium level. In the toxicity results of D. magna, it can be said that Zn NP (40–60 nm) has a highly toxic effect only at 50 ppm concentration for 48 h and lethal dose can be accepted as of 5 ppm at the end of 72 h. In A. salina individuals, it is clearly seen that there is an increase in mortality in organisms parallel to the dose increase. Although all NPs were applied to organisms in low doses corresponding to environmental values, it was observed that toxic effect was in parallel with the increase in time. It is clearly known that there is the inverse proportion between the size of NPs and the toxic effect. The smaller the size of NPs is, the higher the toxic effect becomes When the results of Zn accumulation and elimination of A. salina and D. magna individuals exposed to the Zn and ZnO NPs were examined; it was found that accumulation and elimination occurred in parallel with the increase in concentration at each application hour and elimination. Intensive and possible misuse of nanoscale materials is one of the biggest threats to the environment and all living things worldwide.

- BildiriYalnız künye2020A risk assessment approach using both stochastic data and subjective judgments
Mete, Suleyman; Oz, Nurdan Ece; Gul, Muhammet; Serin, Faruk; Celik, Erkan; Kahraman, C.; Cevik Onar, S.; Oztaysi, B.; Sari, I.U.; Cebi, S.
Risk assessment describes the overall process regarding identifying hazards and risk factors that have the potential to cause harm, analyzing and evaluating the risk associated with that hazard and determining appropriate ways to eliminate the hazard or control the risk. In the literature, lots of approaches are proposed to prioritize hazards and associated risks quantitatively. Fuzzy sets-based multi-criteria decision-making approaches are forefront that they have the ability in expressing the risks verbally based on decision-maker’s opinions and judgments. MCDA-based risk assessment approaches explain different types of uncertainties, which are generally modeled using stochastic analysis or fuzzy sets. The stochastic analysis is more suitable in modelling the probabilistic uncertainty. Therefore, in this study, a risk assessment approach using both stochastic data and subjective judgments is proposed, and a case study is also performed in a construction project. The VIKOR method is extended and a new risk assessment approach is developed where part of the data is stochastic. A three-year data is used to determine a fitted probability distribution of respected frequency. Evaluation of risks with respect to severity and probability parameters are then made by subjective judgments. In conclusion, a risk prioritization and potential action plan suggestion is performed.

- MakaleYalnız künye2020Scopus SJRQ2“Home-buying behaviour model of Generation Y in Turkey”
Kayapinar Kaya, Sema; Ozdemir, Yasal; Dal, Murat
Purpose: The young population in Turkey is gradually increasing. Generation Y, which comprises the people born between 1980 and 1999 (Broadbridge et al., 2007) and free-spirited and tech-savvy, forms a large part of the population of the world, especially Turkey, and is of great importance to the housing sector for their home-buying preferences. In this study, housing preferences of students in Turkey’s two socio-economically different universities were comparatively analysed through quantitative methods. Design/methodology/approach: A survey was simultaneously distributed among students of two universities. The survey consists of six main factors: “reliability”, “economic opportunities”, “transportation opportunities”, “quality of life and social opportunities”, “quality standards”, and “technological opportunities”, with 25 statements. The questionnaire was developed through a comprehensive literature review and the opinions of university stakeholders. Findings: Results showed that the structure of the family and socio-economic differences affect home-buying preferences. The Mann–Whitney U test indicated that there was a meaningful difference of opinion between students of two universities. Munzur University students paid attention to economic opportunities when buying a home. Additionally, there was a meaningful relationship among the age groups in factors of “having a parking place” (p = 0.026) and “having a playground” (p = 0.026). As the age increases, students desire a playground around their future home. Research limitations/implications: The most important limitation of this study is the non-parametric data. Non-parametric data structure and the tests performed accordingly are less preferred than parametric data structure. For that reason, to what extent the results accurately represent Generation Y needs to be assessed through future study. Also, a certain number of sampling could be reached as purposive sampling was used. Originality/value: This study contributes to the literature in terms of comparatively analysing buying preferences of Generation Y through statistical methods and showing the relationship between these preferences and socio-economic features statistically. Due to the insufficient quantitative research on the literature, this quantitative study was carried future home-buying preferences of Generation Y university students, who will also be actively involved in the housing market. The purpose of this study investigates marketing factors that affect housing preferences of students in Turkey.

Narrow-clawed crayfish (Astacus leptodactylus Eschscholtz, 1823) is native species to Turkey and the most important shellfish because of its commercial value and ecological role in ecosystem. The knowledge on bio-ecological features of narrow-clawed crayfish is limited. In this study, total length (TL), carapace length (CL), carapace width (CW), abdomen length (AL), abdomen width (AW), chela length (ChL) and chela width (ChW) of narrow-clawed crayfish were compared in two different habitats (Egirdir Lake and Keban Dam Lake). According to linear regression analysis, the highest relation was between TL and AL (R2=0.987) of the female in Egirdir Lake and the weakest relationship was between AW and ChL (R2=0.084) in Keban Dam Lake. Overall, the biometric features of A. leptodactylus populations in Egirdir Lake and Keban Dam Lake were different and these differences were significant in mid-length groups. These findings clearly demonstrated the impact of commercial catching on the length distribution of the crayfish stocks.

- MakaleYalnız künye2020A RESEARCH FOR BACTERIAL SELF-HEALING IN METAKAOLIN BASED GEOPOLYMER MORTARS
Yilmazer Polat, Berivan; Uysal, Mucteba; Korkmaz, Volkan
Cement production is a polluting process for nature. For this reason, new types of concrete which can be produced with recycled materials and without cement continue to be investigated. On the other hand; cracks in structural elements reduce the strength and durability of a building. Extending service life of buildings has eliminated the cost of rebuilding and thus, contributed to both the economy and the ecosystem. Due to this, research on crack healing in Portland cement concretes with various bacteria is continuing for some time. However, there are not enough studies in literature regarding the improvement of metakaolin-based geopolymer mortars produced without using cement by urolytic bacteria. The parameters of temperature, pH and void ratio of bacterial geopolymer mortar affect the viability of bacteria. For example, pH value of the medium required for the survival of bacteria is, generally around nine. During the production of geopolymer concrete, a sudden increase in high alkali environment occurs due to use of activators. This reduces the survival rate of bacteria added to the mixture during the production of geopolymer mortar. In this study, the most suitable environment for geopolymer mortar, and the conditions for the bacteria to survive until the end of the curing process for the mortar to be strengthened were investigated. Analyses on the effects of urolytic bacteria and geopolymer mortar healing process on mechanical strength of the mortar were conducted. Sporosarcina Pasteurii were used for the self healing process. Various mixtures of geopolymer mortars were cured under different environmental conditions to observe changes in their mechanical strength and water absorption capacity. As the result of the study, the most suitable mixture ratio and curing medium were identified. It was observed that the nutrient, ensuring the life cycle of the urolytic bacteria, had no negative effect on the mechanical strength of mortar and reduced capillary water absorption of the mortar. This study is a specific text in the literature that analyzes bacterial curing conditions and the effect of improving geopolymer mortar.

Patient arrivals at the emergency department (ED) of hospitals has an unpredictable behavior. So that, adequate forecasting of this process can serve a management baseline to better allocate ED human resources and medical equipment. In this paper, a multi-method patient arrival forecasting outline for EDs is developed. The methods followed within this study include single methods as linear regression (LR), autoregressive integrated moving average (ARIMA), artificial neural network (ANN), exponential smoothing and hybrid methods as ARIMA–ANN and ARIMA-LR. As the subject of the study, a private hospital ED case in Turkey is carried out. Data of ED patient arrivals for the year of 2016 was used to set up models. Forecasting performance of the multi-method outline was measured using mean absolute percentage error. The ARIMA–ANN hybrid model is shown to outperform in terms of forecasting accuracy. In order to contribute to the current knowledge, this paper is a novel attempt of applying these methods to model ED patient arrivals and making an overall assessment among them. The results can be used to aid in strategic decision-making on ED staffing and scheduling policy planning in response to predictable arrival variations.

Type I diabetes is known as insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus, and the most important factor playing role in its formation is the genetic predispo- sition. Physalis peruviana L. (Goldenberry) is a plant, which has strong antioxidant properties, from Solanaceae family and, because of its fructose con- tent, plays regulatory role in blood glucose level of diabetics. In this study, it has been investigated the effects of goldenberry on the malondialdehyde (MDA), reduced glutathione (GSH), total protein, vitamins A, D, E, and K, and cholesterol levels which are the indicators of antioxidant defense and the oxidative damages in serum, muscle, kidney, liver and brain tissues of the rats, on which type I diabetes was induced by STZ. According to the obtained results, among the rats with STZ-induced type I diabetes, it was ob- served that the level of glutathione (GSH) increased and the level of malondialdehyde (MDA) decreased in all of the tissues of rats given goldenberry extract, while significant decreases were determined in the levels of vitamins K-1, K-2, D-2 and D-3 in all of tissues (except serum), and there were also decreases in the level of α-tocopherol and cholesterol in tis- sues of muscle, liver and kidney. In this study, it was shown that the goldenberry decreased the destructive effects of type-I diabetes by decreasing the serum glucose and lipid peroxida- tion and increasing the level of glutathione. It is believed that the obtained results would be used in fol- low-up of diabetic patients and in early diagnosis of the disease in future.

- MakaleYalnız künye2020Scopus SJRQ3Increasing the Power Generation by Raising the Capacity of the Thrust Bearing Oil Cooling System in Hydroelectric Power Plants
Kahraman, Gökhan
Cooling capacity decreases due to faults appearing over time in the thrust bearing oil cooling systems of hydroelectric power plants and cooling process cannot proceed sufficiently. For this reason, while the turbine-generator unit generates energy, the thrust bearing heats up. This temperature problem prevents the unit from operating at full capacity and therefore decreases in energy production. Producing deficient energy in hydroelectric power plants, which is a renewable energy source, causes long-term economic losses for countries. In this study, the thrust bearing cooling system of a vertical Francis turbine, which produces 150 MW of energy per hour, is investigated. The reduction in the cooling capacity over time in turbine thrust bearing cooling system is solved by using exchanger system with additional plate and the power produced by the turbine-generator unit is increased 15 MW/h. This improvement has greatly contributed to the national economy. The method of increasing the cooling capacity applied to the hydroelectric power plant thrust bearings can be applied to all hydraulic turbines. This method will increase the energy production amount of the unit by approximately 10% and it costs approximately 80% cheaper than completely replacing the existing cooling system.

Döner, Deniz; Çokgezme, Ömer Faruk; Çevik, Mutlu; Engin, Mustafa; İçier, Filiz
In the present study, the effectiveness of ohmic thawing (OT) on temperature distribution (TD) was evaluated by using a non-destructive measurement method: thermal imaging (TI). The effects of both OT process parameters and sample properties on TD of thawed minced beef were determined. Thermal images were taken from the central cross-sectional area of a thawed sample. In the first part of the study, the effects of OT system parameters (voltage gradient; 10–13–16 V/cm and electrode type; E1:titanium foil electrode with a smooth surface, E2: needled-type titanium electrode, E3: titanium electrode with pyramid surface shaped) and sample shape (X: 13 × 4 × 3 cm3; Y: 13 × 6 × 2 cm3; Z: 13 cm height × 3.91 cm diameter) were analyzed in detail. The best thawing condition (electrode type E2 and sample shape Y) was determined by taking into account of thawing time and TD properties obtained from a developed TI processing technique. In the second part of the study, the effects of OT process on TD properties of minced beef having different fat contents (2–10–18%) were compared with those of two different conventional thawing processes (stationary cold ambient + 4 °C -RT and under cold running water + 4 °C -WT). The percentage of thawed portions in central section was above 68% for OT and varied between 12 and 54% for CT. Rectangular-shaped samples had more homogeneous temperature distributions than cylindrical samples (p < 0.05). TI could be used to control the process by non-destructive monitoring of temperature during OT.

Ozcelik, Mehtap; Erisir, Mine; Guler, Osman; Baykara, Murat; Bulmus, Funda Gulcu
The antioxidant and protective effect of resveratrol against irradiation induced oxidative damage were researched. Twenty-one rats were seperated into 3 groups; First group was the control group. Second group was the irradiation group; received physiological saline intraperitoneally (i.p.) for three days, then 9 Gray (Gy) irradiation was applied. Third group was irradiation+Resveratrol group; received 10 mg/kg resveratrol i.p. for three days and then the same dose of radiation was applied. As a result of irradiation, a significant increase was found in the level of malondialdehyde (MDA) in the liver, kidney and brain tissues of rats (P<0.001). Glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px) activity in all the tissues and superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity, Glutathione (GSH) levels in liver decreased (P<0.01), GSH levels in kidney, spleen and ovarium tissues significantly increased (P<0.05). The giving of resveratrol significantly reduced the MDA levels increasing in liver, kidney, and brain as a result of irradiation (P<0.001) and the liver MDA levels reached to the control levels. By giving resveratrol, it was determined that all the antioxidants studied reduced significantly compared to the control group and/or the irradiation group (P<0.05). According to the data obtained as a result; It was concluded that resveratrol shows a corrective effect by changing the oxidant/antioxidant balance against oxidative stress caused by irradiation, therefore resveratrol is a powerful antioxidant.

Background. Synchiropus phaeton (Günther, 1861) is a sexually dimorphic, benthic species that inhabits mud bottoms. This fish is one of the important by catch species in the trawl fishing. There is no commercial value. But it has ecological importance in this area. The information about the biology of S. phaeton is very limited. This study was conducted to investigate the age and growth relation of phaeton dragonet inhabiting the Gulf of Iskenderun, north-eastern Mediterranean coast of Turkey. Materials and methods. A total of 289 phaeton dragonets were collected as discards during the commercial trawl fishing at the depth range of 100–150 m in the Gulf of Iskenderun, north-eastern Mediterranean. The fish age was determined from sagittal otoliths. The age readings were performed using Leica S8APO microscope and were documented with the Leica Application Suite (Ver. 4.8.0) software. The index of the mean percentage error (IMPE) was calculated to assess the precision of the age determination between two independent readers. Growth parameters for all specimens were subsequently determined by fitting the observed and the length-at-age data using the von Bertalanffy growth equations. Total length–weight relations (LWRs) and the condition factor (CF) were determined. Results. The total length and weight of S. phaeton ranged from 7.0 to 19.0 cm and from 2.01 to 22.0 g, respectively. The age of the studied individuals ranged from 2 to 7 years. The parameters of von Bertalanffy growth fitted to the mean observed total lengths-at age for each sex separately and were estimated as L∞ = 23.358 cm, K = 0.248 year–1, t0 = –0.501 years for females and L∞ = 26.543 cm, K = 0.156 year–1, t0 = –0.662 years for males, respectively. The overall growth performance index (G) value was determined as 3.46 for the combined sexes. The total length– weight relations were determined as W = 0.0121TL2.55, R² = 0.94; 95% confidence intervals of b = 2.395–2.687, t-test P < 0.05 for females and W = 0.0094TL2.64,R2 = 0.93; 95% confidence intervals of b = 2.470–2.803, t-test P < 0.05 for males. The types of growth were found negatively allometric (b < 3). The highest condition factor was found at the age of 2 (0.62), while the lowest was found at the age of 6 (0.26). Conclusions. The presently reported study provides the first data on the age and growth of the S. phaeton that had not been studied previously in the Gulf of Iskenderun, north-eastern Mediterranean of Turkey. This study will contribute significantly to the conservation and management strategies of the species of S. phaeton in the future.

Say, Yakup; Guler, Omer; Dikici, Burak
In this study, mechanical properties and corrosion resistance of AZ61 and AZ91 magnesium matrix composites reinforced with 01, 0.2, and 0.5 wt% carbon nanotubes (CNTs) were investigated, detailly. CNTs have been successfully synthesized with 15–20 nm diameters by chemical vapor deposition (CVD) method and then, added to magnesium alloys by using the powder metallurgy (PM) technique. The composite compacts were consolidated by cold-pressing under 500 MPa pressure and sintered for 2 h at 500 °C under Ar atmosphere. The characterization studies of the unreinforced alloys and composites were carried out by scanning and transmission electron microscopes (SEM, TEM), electron dispersive spectroscope (EDS), Raman spectroscopy, and X-ray diffraction. The mechanical properties and corrosion behaviors of the composites have been compared with compression tests and potentiodynamic scanning (PDS) techniques, respectively. The results showed that the effect of CNTs reinforcement on strength increase was greater in AZ61 series samples than AZ91-based composites. The corrosion results of the presented study showed that the composites reinforced with lower CNTs (such as 0.1 or 0.2 wt%) and unreinforced alloys had better corrosion resistance than high CNTs (such as 0.5 wt%) containing structures. However, the most resistant structure to the corrosion for both AZ61 and AZ91 alloys were obtained in the composites reinforced with 0.2 wt% CNTs.

Controversy remains over when present-day configuration of the Anatolia boundary faults came into existence, and the issue of what are the driving forces of the Anatolian westward motion. The NW-striking dextral and NE-striking sinistral second-order strike-slip faults at the eastern part of the Anatolian Scholle play a crucial role within these long-lasting discussions, and the NE-striking sinistral Malatya–Ovacık Fault Zone (MOFZ) is particularly important in this ongoing debate. Although the MOFZ is defined as one of the intra-plate structures, it has been proposed that it was an inter-plate fault between the Anatolia and Arabian plates from the latest Miocene to mid-Pliocene and that it has been inactive during the last ca. 3.5 Ma. This study provides results from the first morphochronology-based uplift and slip rate estimates on the Malatya Fault within the southern section of the MOFZ. The cosmogenic isochron burial and cosmogenic depth burial of ages from the sinistrally offset Tohma River remnant terraces enabled us to calculate 1.0 ± 0.01 and 1.12 ± 0.01 mm/yr minimum and maximum horizontal slip rates, respectively, for the last 1.4 ± 0.1 Ma. Furthermore, we conclude that the 96 ± 11 m/Ma mean uplift has been driven by the Malatya Fault. Integrated interpretation of the findings of this study and available data on both the MOFZ and other strike-slip faults at the eastern part of the Anatolian Scholle support the hypothesis that they are plate-boundary related active deformation belts that originated from paleotectonic structures during the tectonic escape of the Anatolian Scholle.

As Turkey’s second-largest glaciated region, these mountains include various glacial landforms, primarily glacial valleys, hanging valleys, cirques, and moraines. However, only limited data are available on the extent and chronology of former glaciations in the Munzur Mountains. This study produced data on the extent of paleoglaciers, calculated their equilibrium line altitudes (ELAs), revealed paleoclimate conditions, and modeled paleo temperatures during maximum ice extent using numerically derived reconstruction methods (GlaRe and ELA calculation tools) based on geomorphic evidence. The major glacial landforms were first mapped in detail before the reconstruction. Six hundred and eighty cirques and 30 glaciated valleys were identified. Paleoglaciers did not override the entire mountains, however, valley glaciers converged where topographic conditions were suitable. The maximum extent of glaciation covered an area of ca. 600 km2. The largest glacier was ca. 19 km in length. Moreover, 15 of the valley glaciers were over 10 km in length. Their average thickness was 75 m, and the maximum glacial thickness, in the Eastern Munzurs, was found to be ca. 300 m. The total volume of ice reached ca. 45 km3. The paleoglaciers reached as low as 1350 m above sea level. The average ELA was calculated approximately 2600 m above sea level, indicating an equilibrium line altitude depression of 1000–1100 m. The paleotemperatures, estimated based on different scenarios at the time of the maximum extent of Munzur glaciers, were 8–10 °C lower than today. The mountains experienced an increase in precipitation through this period with respect to the current precipitation scheme.

Boydak, Merve; Orhan, Ahmet; Caliskan, Abuzer
In this study, the multimode operation of Single-Phase Matrix Converter (SMPC) is examined. The SPMC was operated as a controlled rectifier and frequency converter using a single driver circuit. Mode selection is provided by changing the value of the constant block in the driver circuit. In the rectifier mode, the sinusoidal input voltage was rectified and transferred to the output. Output voltage at the desired frequency value was generated in the frequency changer mode. Voltage peaks in frequency converter mode were prevented with the safe commutation strategy used. Harmonics in the output voltage were examined for different modulation index values. Switches in the SPMC are switched using Sinusoidal Pulse Width Modulation (SPWM) technique. MATLAB/Simulink was used for simulation.

Kurnaz Yetim, Nurdan; Aslan, Naim; Koç, Mumin Mehmet
Catalytic properties of Bi2S3 nanostructures, Fe3O4 nanoparticles and novel Bi2S3@Fe3O4 magnetic nanocomposites were investigated. Flower-like Bi2S3 nanostructures were produced using hydrothermal synthesis. Bi2S3 nanostructures were doped with Fe3O4 nanoparticles where Bi2S3@Fe3O4 novel magnetic nanocomposites was obtained. Structural characterization of the nanoflowers were performed using X-ray diffraction (XRD) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). Microscopic characterization of the nanoflowers was performed using electron microscopy where scanning electron microscope (SEM) and transmission electron microscope (TEM) were used in the characterization which confirms the flower like structures. Vibrating sample magnetometry (VSM) confirmed the magnetic properties of the ferromagnetic characteristics of the magnetic nanocomposites. Optic properties of the nanoparticles were assessed using Ultraviolet - visible (UV-vis) spectroscopy. Band gap energies of the Bi2S3, Fe3O4 and Bi2S3@Fe3O4 were found to be 1.80 eV, 2.0 eV and 2.72 eV, respectively. Catalytic properties of the Bi2S3@Fe3O4 nanoparticles were confirmed using UV spectroscopy where reduction of p-nitrophenol to p-aminophenol was assessed in the presence of NaBH4. It was concluded that Bi2S3 nanostructures and Bi2S3@Fe3O4 nanocomposites showed better catalytic performance than that of Fe3O4 nanoparticles. Such a case was attributed to increased surface area - volume ratio. Results indicate that nanocomposites have the potential to be used in the wastewater treatment.
