Topal, Murat; Öbek, Erdal; Uslu Şenel, Gülşad; Arslan Topal, E. Işıl
In this study, the efficiency of Lemna gibba L. on tetracycline (TC) removal from the solutions prepared at various initial TC concentrations (50, 100 and 300 µg/L) was investigated. The study was conducted in the reactors planted with Lemna gibba L. plants. Lemna gibba L. plants in the reactors were harvested at various hydraulic retention times. Then, the concentrations of TC were determined by using LC/-MS-MS. The maximum removal efficiencies for the TC50, TC100 and TC300 in the planted reactors were 99.8 ± 4.1; 99.9 ± 4.9 and 99 ± 4.9%, respectively. The harvesting times for Lemna gibba L. at TC50, TC100 and TC300 concentrations were determined to be 12, 8 and 12 hours, respectively. First-, second- and pseudo-first-order kinetics are determined in the planted reactors (with Lemna gibba L.). According to the study results, second-order kinetics were obtained at TC50, TC100, TC300 concentrations. As a result, the Lemna gibba L. plant can be used as an alternative treatment method to other advanced treatment methods and it can be done with a cheap method by adapting to existing treatment plants. Lemna gibba L. plants can be used to remove pollutants by applying them to polluted lakes and water bodies.

Wang, Chen; Akkurt, Nevzat; Zhang, Xiaosong; Luo, Yimo; She, Xiaohui
Liquid air energy storage (LAES) is increasingly popular for decarbonizing the power network. At off-peak time, ambient air after purification is liquefied and stored; at peak time, the liquid air is discharged to generate power. One of the key challenges for the LAES system is the lower economic benefit as peak electricity is usually the only source of income, leading to a longer payback period of ~15 years. To address this issue, this paper, for the first time, proposes a multifunctional LAES system, which not only generates peak electricity but also provides pure oxygen and heating. The proposed system is composed of an air separation unit (ASU), a nitrogen liquefaction unit (NLU) and a power generation unit (PGU). Thermodynamic and economic analyses are carried out on the proposed system. Compared with the baseline LAES system (NLU + PGU), the multifunctional LAES system has a lower round trip efficiency of ~0.39 due to the extra electricity consumption by the ASU. However, it shows a much better economic performance with additional benefits from pure oxygen and heating. In a project life-span of 30 years, the multifunctional LAES system (10 MW/80 MWh) has a short payback period of ~5.7 years. Furthermore, it has a savings-to-investment ratio of 3.12, which is ~153% higher than that of the baseline LAES system. Investigation on the system operation strategy suggests that the ASU should operate at full time. The proposed system provides a feasible way to improve the economic benefits of the LAES system, thus promoting its wide applications.

Bayrakdar, Cihan; Çılğın, Zeynel; Keserci, Ferhat
Mount Akdağ, located 25 km northeast of Alanya (2451 m above sea level a.s.l.), and largely made up of carbonates, is one of the mountains exposed to Late Quaternary glaciation in the Western Taurus Mountains. Although today, there are no modern glaciers, the traces of the Late Quaternary glaciers and rock glaciers are still fresh. In this study, geomorphological features related to the glaciations in Mount Akdağ, which were not previously reported in the literature, were first identified from satellite images, and then verified by field studies. The geomorphological development of Mount Akdağ during the Quaternary was explained by considering its climatic and karstic characteristics. For this purpose, spatial data obtained from field studies, unmanned aerial vehicles and meteorological stations were analysed using geographic information systems. Akdağ is directly open to humid air masses coming from the SW sector over the Mediterranean Sea, resulting in heavy orographic precipitation that encouraged the growth of glaciers. In addition, glacier reconstruction and pELA estimates have been made to contribute to the interpretation of glacial geomorphology. The pELA in Mount Akdağ was calculated with the AABR ratio of 1.69, and was found to be around 2030 m a.s.l. More than 15 cirques and a 6.5 km long glacial valley in Mount Akdağ indicate the presence of glaciers. Reconstruction of the paleoglaciers shows that the lowest altitude reached was 1410 m a.s.l. At their maximum extent glaciers covered an area of ~ 14 km2, with a volume of ~ 1 km3 and had an average thickness of 60 m with a maximum glacier thickness of ~ 200 m.

- MakaleAçık Erişim2020Scopus SJRQ3Biosorptive removal of eriochrome black-T using agaricus campestris: Parameters optimization with response surface methodology
Alp, Hevidar; Ince, Muharrem; Ince, Olcay Kaplan; Onal, Ali
In this study, Eriochrome Black T (EBT) removal from aqueous media by Agaricus campestris (AC) which is an eco-friendly biosorbent was investigated using a central composite design (CCD) combined with response surface methodology. The CCD was chosen as the statistical prediction method to reduce the number of experiments which, in turn, will directly save time and chemicals. To opti-mize the process, various experimental independent variables such as the pH of the solution, contact time, adsorbent dosage and temperature were selected. The optimal experimental conditions were obtained as 6.5, 30°C, 20 min and 20 mg, for solution pH, temperature, contact time and adsorbent dosage, respectively. Under these optimized conditions, maximum EBT (100 mg L–1 initial concentra-tion) removal efficiency was calculated as 64.2 mg g–1. The independent variables and their interaction significance were checked using analysis of variance and it was found that the EBT biosorption on AC was highly significant (p < 0.001). The results were justified by the relatively high correlation coefficients (R2 = 0.9967) of the statistical prediction. The EBT biosorption was confirmed by fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) analysis monitoring the functional groups during EBT biosorption on AC. This was the first report on the parameter optimization of EBT biosorp-tion using AC in an experimental design. The used biosorbent was characterized by FTIR, scanning electron microscope coupled with energy dispersive spectrometer and thermogravimetric analysis. The proposed biosorption process efficiently removed EBT, present in various aqueous mediums and can be used in industrial processes.

- MakaleAçık Erişim2020Scopus SJRQ2An integrated approach of best-worst method (bwm) and triangular fuzzy sets for evaluating driver behavior factors related to road safety
Moslem, Sarbast; Gul, Muhammet; Farooq, Danish; Celik, Erkan; Ghorbanzadeh, Omid; Blaschke, Thomas
Driver behavior plays a major role in road safety because it is considered as a significant argument in traffic accident avoidance. Drivers mostly face various risky driving factors which lead to fatal accidents or serious injury. This study aims to evaluate and prioritize the significant driver behavior factors related to road safety. In this regard, we integrated a decision-making model of the Best-Worst Method (BWM) with the triangular fuzzy sets as a solution for optimizing our complex decision-making problem, which is associated with uncertainty and ambiguity. Driving characteristics are different in different driving situations which indicate the ambiguous and complex attitude of individuals, and decision-makers (DMs) need to improve the reliability of the decision. Since the crisp values of factors may be inadequate to model the real-world problem considering the vagueness and the ambiguity, and providing the pairwise comparisons with the requirement of less compared data, the BWM integrated with triangular fuzzy sets is used in the study to evaluate risky driver behavior factors for a designed three-level hierarchical structure. The model results provide the most significant driver behavior factors that influence road safety for each level based on evaluator responses on the Driver Behavior Questionnaire (DBQ). Moreover, the model generates a more consistent decision process by the new consistency ratio of F-BWM. An adaptable application process from the model is also generated for future attempts.

Topal, Murat; Arslan Topal, E. Işıl
In this study, the removal of tetracycline from aqueous solutions with chitosan obtained from mussel shells was optimized and investigated using responce surface methodology. For this aim, the central composite design was used to optimize the four variable factors (sorbent dosage (0.4–1.0 g), time (20−60 min), temparature (10−30 °C) and initial TC concentration (50−100 mg/L)) for the removal of TC from aqueous solutions by chitosan obtained from mussel shells. According to the RSM analysis results, optimum conditions for maximum TC removal efficiency were determined as 90.5 mg/L for initial TC concentration, 35.9 min for time, 29.9 °C for temperature and 0.4 g for sorbent dosage. It was observed that the tetracycline was crystallized on mussel shells. According to the results of XRD after adsorption, the content of mussel shells were observed as 60% calcite, 5.6% overite, 9.4% aragonite and calcium hydroxide 25%, respectively. As a result, experiments showed that chitosan obtained from mussel shells were a good adsorbant for tetracycline removal from aqueous solutions.

Sabanci, Serdal; Icier, Filiz
Sour cherry juice was concentrated to 65% TSS content by using ohmic heating assisted vacuum evaporation (OVE) at voltage gradients (10, 12, 14 V/cm) and vacuum evaporation (VE). The change of performance efficiencies (energy/exergy) of OVE process depending on the voltage gradient applied and the increase in TSS content during the process were investigated by taking into account of both process and system boundaries, and compared with those of VE process. During this process, total energy consumption decreased as the voltage gradient increased, but it increased as TSS content increased. System boundary based efficiencies were lower than process based ones. Maximum efficiency was obtained for 14 V/cm. Improvement potential values increased as TSS content increased but the voltage gradient increased. The assistance of ohmic heating to VE increased the performance of the evaporation process in terms of energy and exergy efficiencies, and decreased the improvement requirements of the system.

The aquatic life has been negatively influenced by harmful effects of environmental toxic elements, including heavy metals. The elevated concentrations of metals may be harmful for aquatic animals and human health. Herein, the present study deals with assessment of the bioavailability of metals [cadmium (Cd), chrome (Cr), copper (Cu), zinc (Zn), iron (Fe), lead (Pb), manganese (Mn), mercury (Hg), nickel (Ni), and selenium (Se)] in organs such as muscle, gills, liver, kidney, and gonad of the commercially consumed Barbus sp. and Cyprinus carpio (Linnaeus, 1758) collected from Keban Dam Lake, eastern Turkey. The fish were captured from four different stations of Keban Dam Lake. Our results indicated that Fe and Zn concentrations were the highest in all tissues of two fish species while Cd concentrations were the lowest levels. In addition, detected metals accumulated in the muscle of common carp at higher levels compared to Barbus sp. The results from the present study also demonstrated significant variations and considerable differences in the concentrations of all 10 elements between the four stations and different fish tissues. Overall, the concentrations of detected metals in the muscle were many folds higher than the permissible level prescribed by some national and international legislation, which raises health risk concerns.

Doxorubicin (DXR) is one of the commonly used chemotherapeutic agents, which is highly toxic and causes gastrointestinal and cardiac toxicity. Curcumin is used as a spice and coloring agent in food, but also possesses anti-proliferating, potent antioxidant, antitumor-promoting and anti-carcinogenic properties in vitro and in vivo. In this study, the change in element concentrations in the tissues of healthy animals was examined by administering doxorubicin and curcumin separately, or both at the same time. For this purpose, 35 wistar albino male rats were selected and randomly divided into five groups of seven each. The objective of this study was to assess and compare the levels of copper, iron, zinc and selenium in the liver, kidney, heart, and testis of the control group and in the doxorubicin-induced tissues. According to the results, the Cu, Fe, Zn, Se amounts and the Cu/Fe, Cu/Zn, and Cu/Se ratios were present at different levels in each of the five groups. In terms of element concentration, the most affected tissue by doxorubicin application is the heart, and the least affected is the kidney. The ratios of Cu/Fe and Cu/Se in the liver and the heart were highest in Group II and Group III, respectively.

The research study was about revealing the biochemical response of Gammarus pulex related to insecticide methomyl before and after bioremediation by two soil bacteria species, Ochrobactrum thiophenivorans and Sphingomonas melonis. Catalase (CAT), glutathione S-transferase.(GST), cytochrome. P4501A1 (CYP1A1) activities in G. Pulex related to methomyl solution were investigated in 24 h and 96 h. ELISA method was used for test studies. CAT enzyme was decreased in Gammarus pulex that was exposed to methomyl after all exposure period (P < 0.05). CAT activities were returned to control results after bioremediation assays. GST enzyme activity was decreased depending on methomyl exposure during 24 h but increased during 4 days (P < 0.05). After 8 days of bioremediation period, GST activity increased again during 24 h while decreased during 4 days (P < 0.05). CYP1A1 activity increased in Gammarus pulex that was exposed to methomyl after all exposure period (P > 0.05). After bioremediation, statistically significant changes were not revealed in CYP1A1 activities (P > 0.05). According to the results of our study, CYP1A1, CAT, and GST activities in G. pulex sanctioned the capability of Ochrobactrum thiophenivorans and Sphingomonas melonis in methomyl bioremediation. Isolated and enriched Ochrobactrum thiophenivorans and Sphingomonas melonis that were added to 2.5 ppb concentrations of methomyl for 8 days. Each day, chemical oxygen demand (COD) and biochemical oxygen demand (BOD5), pH and dissolved oxygen parameters were monitored. At the final phase of the bioremediation step, it was determined that these bacteria have efficient methomyl bioremediation properties in a mixed corsortia at a rate of 86%. These results show that these bacteria can be used for bioremediate the receiving environments that are polluted by these kinds of insecticides.

Seed like fossils recognized by their distinctive orbicular in shape are seen in the early Miocene of the Nallıhan area (NW Türkiye). We examined more than one hundred specimens and facies associations for interpreting of fossil morphology and its paleoenvironment. The fossils as dark crystallized dots on the bedding surface of clayey limestones are characterized by a thick edged lenticular shape with a smooth one side and concave another side with circular nucleus. Their internal structures have circular a few whorlings, too often radial calcitic lamellae on the upper side and a few circular coiling at the bottom side. SEM, EPMA and RAMAN data of soft nucleus, hard part, filling materials and surrounding sediments support its plant origin. The Paleogene aged Kızılbayır formation and early Miocene aged Karadoruk and Akpınar formations include the following facieses: non-channelized red sandstone and mudstone (F1), channelized “confined” reddish-beige pebbly sandstone and conglomerate (F2), medium to coarse siliciclastics (F3), mudstones interbedded with sandstones (F4), thin bedded clayey limestone bearing plant fossils (F5) medium to thick bedded limestone (F6) and rhythmic siliciclastics - clayey limestone including coal occurrences (F7). Abundant plant fossils indicate a planted shallow lake margin with low topography during the early Miocene.

The results obtained from thermogravimetric (TG) analysis, X-ray diffraction analysis, optical characterization and dielectric measurements of the samples were investigated. In X-ray diffraction patterns, the presence of both BaCO3 and ZnO peaks showed that ZnO and BaCO3 nanocrystals were independently grown. Changes in the band peak position in the FTIR spectra showed that the chemical structure of Ba:Zn nanocomposites changed with the doping of graphene oxide. The optical band gap (Eg) of the samples was calculated as 3.18, 3.19, 3.2, 3.21 and 3.23 eV for BaZn, BaZn25, BaZn50, BaZn75 and BaZn100, respectively. It was determined that the dielectric constants and dielectric losses of the nanocomposites exhibited normal dielectric behavior, decreased with the frequency described in light of Maxwell–Wagner model and increased with increasing graphene oxide concentration. TG measurement showed that the mass loss in the sample decreased with increasing graphene oxide.

- MakaleAçık Erişim2020Scopus SJRQ1Accurate deep neural network model to detect cardiac arrhythmia on more than 10,000 individual subject ECG records
Yildirim, Ozal; Talo, Muhammed; Ciaccio, Edward J.; Tan, Ru San; Acharya, U Rajendra
Background and objective: Cardiac arrhythmia, which is an abnormal heart rhythm, is a common clinical problem in cardiology. Detection of arrhythmia on an extended duration electrocardiogram (ECG) is done based on initial algorithmic software screening, with final visual validation by cardiologists. It is a time consuming and subjective process. Therefore, fully automated computer-assisted detection systems with a high degree of accuracy have an essential role in this task. In this study, we proposed an effective deep neural network (DNN) model to detect different rhythm classes from a new ECG database. Methods: Our DNN model was designed for high performance on all ECG leads. The proposed model, which included both representation learning and sequence learning tasks, showed promising results on all 12-lead inputs. Convolutional layers and sub-sampling layers were used in the representation learning phase. The sequence learning part involved a long short-term memory (LSTM) unit after representation of learning layers. Results: We performed two different class scenarios, including reduced rhythms (seven rhythm types) and merged rhythms (four rhythm types) according to the records from the database. Our trained DNN model achieved 92.24% and 96.13% accuracies for the reduced and merged rhythm classes, respectively. Conclusion: Recently, deep learning algorithms have been found to be useful because of their high performance. The main challenge is the scarcity of appropriate training and testing resources because model performance is dependent on the quality and quantity of case samples. In this study, we used a new public arrhythmia database comprising more than 10,000 records. We constructed an efficient DNN model for automated detection of arrhythmia using these records.

This paper investigates the optimal placement of piezoelectric actuators for the active vibration attenuation of beams. The governing equation of the beam is achieved by coupled first order shear deformation theory with two node element. The velocity feedback controller is designed and used to calculate the feedback gain and then apply to the beam. In order to search for the optimal placement of the piezoelectric actuators, a new optimization criterion is considered based on the use of genetic algorithm to reduce the displacement output of the beam. The proposed optimization technique has been tested for two boundary conditions configurations; clamped -free and clamped-clamped beam. Numerical examples have been provided to analyze the effectiveness of the proposed technic.

The study aimed to contribute to the overall understanding of axial spondyloarthritis by investigating the polymorphism in 5’ untranslated region of peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor alpha gene in patients. The study included 194 patients and 197 controls recruited. The DNA obtained from the samples was genotyped by multiplex Polymerase Chain Reaction and then Matrix-Assisted Laser Desorption Ionization-Time of Flight Mass Spectrometry. Data were analyzed by logistic regression. Five polymorphic regions analyzed in this study, three of the sites were associated with disease risk. An allele in the rs1800204 polymorphic region (p < 0.001), C allele in the rs4253657 polymorphic region (p = 0.040) and C allele in the rs13909022 polymorphic region (p = 0.005) were associated with disease risk. The association of disease risk could not be detected with G and A alleles in the rs881740 (p = 0.456) and rs115640476 (p = 0.674) polymorphic regions, respectively. PPARα 5' untranslated region polymorphism, which is shown to be associated with disease risk, is thought to contribute to the elucidation of the molecular mechanism of the disease. In axial spondyloarthritis, studying the effects of genetic changes in PPARα on other genes with which it interacts will contribute to the full understanding of the molecular mechanism of the disease.
