Using Ochrobactrum thiophenivorans and Sphingomonas melonis for bioremediation of Imidacloprid

    Erguven, Gokhan Onder; Demirci, Ulas

To solve the environmental problems of the pesticides, bioremediation methods are commonly useful for their environment friendly properties. These methods are more cheap, useful and have more advantages for remediate receiving environments In this study, imidacloprid which is one of the selective insecticide in all over the world is chosenfor bioremediation studies with two soil bacteria. The imidacloprid used in the Mediterranean climate for cotton, pistachios, tomatoes, peppers and eggplant cultivation. The bioremediation of this insecticide was investigated via the performance of O.thiophenivorans and S. melonis in agitated culture media. The agricultural soil used for the isolation of these two bacteria was taken from the cotton cultivated agricultural area in Adana province in Turkey. For this purpose, the isolated and enriched bacteria were added to the recommended insecticide concentrations, and the Imidacloprid active material, Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD), Biological Oxygen Demand (BOD5), Total Organic Carbon (TOC), pH and dissolved oxygen (DO) parameters were determined for two weeks on each day of the study. O. thiophenivorens and S. melonis bioremediate the Imidacloprid insecticide with high efficiency (over 90%). According to these results, it is understood that these bacteria can be preferred in the bioremediation of receiving environments that are contaminated with such pesticides and can be useful for scientists to handle the opposite effects of such persistent organic pollutants and COD, BOD5 and TOC parameters can easily give opinions about decreasing of pesticides like the active materials

Investigation on the properties of new palm-oil-based polyurethane modified bitumen

Vural Kök, Baha; Aydoğmuş, Ercan; Yilmaz, Mehmet; Akpolat, Mustafa

Polyurethane-derived polymer synthesized by the reaction of 4.4′-diphenylmethane diisocyanate (MDI) with the new modified palm-oil-based polyol was used as an alternative additive to thermoplastic-elastomers, such as styrene–butadienestyrene (SBS), the most commonly used additive. The study aimed to investigate the effect of polyurethane (PU) modification on the rheological and chemical structure of base bitumen. The softening point, rotational viscosity, dynamic shear rheometer (DSR), multi-stress creep recovery (MSCR), bending beam rheometer (BBR), and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) tests were conducted on the binders. The effects of curing time and temperature, isocyanate/hydroxyl (NCO/OH) molar ratio, and PU content were examined and the best modification conditions were determined. It was found that 24 h curing conditions at 85 °C were sufficient for the formation of PU bonds and these processes increased the rutting parameter of the binder by 256% compared to 1 h curing. At 50 °C and a frequency of 5 Hz, the binder with a 4:1 NCO/OH ratio had 63% more complex modulus than the binder with a 10:1 NCO/OH ratio. The 7 wt% PU modified binder had the same performance level as 4% SBS modification and 10 wt% PU modified binder was one degree higher. Moreover, above 60 °C, all the PU modified binders gave lower phase angles compared to the 4% SBS modified binder. 7 wt% PU modified binder showed similar elastic properties against cracks at low temperatures compared to the 4% SBS modified binder. The use of palm oil in the synthesis of PU presents an environmentally friendly and cost-effective solution compared to the use of petrochemical derivatives.

A Method to Determine the Most Suitable Initial Conditions of Chaotic Map in Statistical Randomness Applications

    Acikkapi, Mehmet Sahin; Ozkaynak, Fatih

The processes and systems in the real world actually contain order and symmetry. Understanding these order and symmetrical behavior has been a common effort of scientists. Chaos theory has been an interesting topic to understand these order and symmetrical behavior. One of the most important reasons for this interest is the rich dynamics of chaotic systems. A remarkable application of these systems is statistical randomness. Especially in random number generator designs based on discrete time chaotic systems, an important design parameter affecting the success of the generator (statistical randomness properties) is the initial conditions of chaotic maps. Obtaining different initial conditions that will meet the statistical requirements is important in terms of generating different random number sequences. In order to determine the initial conditions, an algorithm that updates the initial conditions depending on the number of successful statistical tests is proposed. Although the proposed design approach is similar to a back propagation neural network, it has a unique design approach. The NIST SP 800-22 test suite has been used to analyze the statistical properties of the proposed generator. It is known that the NIST SP 800-22 test suite is a hypothesis test. Therefore, in order to show the success of the proposed method in the best way, various additional analysis studies have been carried out proving that the generator outputs have a uniform distribution. Using the proposed method, six different initial conditions have been determined that provide statistical random properties for the discrete-time chaotic systems known as logistic map and tent map. 1,000,000 bits have been generated using the obtained initial conditions. These bit values are then converted to decimal values between 0-15. It is observed that the obtained numbers have a uniform distribution. These outputs are thought to be applicable in many areas such as games, simulation, modeling, determination of optimization parameters and cryptology. It is shown in a practical application for cryptographic substitution-box designs to examine the success of the outputs.

Topal, Murat; Topal, Emine Işıl Arslan

In this study, the estimated amounts of discarded face masks due to COVID 19 were investigated. In this context, the amount of waste face masks was determined separately according to the mask types used (nonwoven, meltblown, and 3-ply, pleated) and the importance of waste face masks was revealed. According to obtained data, the estimated total daily face mask use in Turkey is 72,351,638. The highest amounts of nonwoven, meltblown, and 3-ply face mask waste were determined as 26.88, 36.29, and 43.68 tonnes/day for İstanbul city, respectively. Total amounts of nonwoven, meltblown and 3-ply face mask waste in Turkey were calculated as 144.7, 195.35, and 235.14 tonnes/day, respectively. The top 5 provinces with the highest amount of waste masks are listed as follows; İstanbul (nonwoven=26.88, meltblown=36.29, 3ply=43.68 tonnes/day), Ankara (nonwoven=9.91, meltblown=13.38, 3ply=16.11 tonnes/day), İzmir (nonwoven=7.76, meltblown=10.47, 3ply=12.61 tonnes/day), Bursa (nonwoven=5.40, meltblown=7.29, 3ply=8.78 tonnes/day), and Antalya (nonwoven=4.45, meltblown=6.01, 3ply=7.23 tonnes/day), respectively. In Turkey, 91.3% of medical waste collected in health institutions in 2019 (90,920 tonnes) was sterilized and disposed of in storage areas (83,010 tonnes). 8.7% of medical waste was sent to incineration facilities and disposed (7,910 tonnes). Considering these values, 132, 178.35, and 214.7 tonnes/day of nonwoven, meltblown, and 3-ply face mask wastes can be disposed by sterilization and the remaining 12.7, 17, and 20.44 tonnes/day by incineration, respectively.

Alternative α* Parameter Estimation for Simplified Beerkan Infiltration Method to Assess Soil Saturated Hydraulic Conductivity

    Yilmaz, D.

Abstract: In situ characterization of the saturated hydraulic conductivity (Ks) requires a large number of experiments, sampling, and laboratory measurements that are time-consuming and expensive. Simplified Beerkan Infiltration (SBI) method was developed to estimate an approximate Ks based on the infiltration curve without any sampling procedures. For that purpose, α* parameter, which is used in the calculation of Ks, was commonly set to a fixed value based on soil texture. This approach was not sufficient for an accurate Ks estimation. For a relatively dry soil, a new approach involving an empirical structural parameter was proposed to calculate an approximation of the α* parameter based on the shape of the steady state asymptote of the Beerkan cumulative infiltration. The new α* parameter was tested on simplified Beerkan infiltration (SBI) method in over 32 Beerkan experiments selected from the Soil World Infiltration Global (SWIG) database. The steady state SBI (SSBI) method estimated Ks with an accuracy close to those estimated with the BEST (Beerkan Estimation Soil Transfer) method. The R2 correlation factor for the SSBI method in Ks estimation with BEST intercept and steady methods were 0.982 and 0.994, respectively. For the transient SBI method, the R2 correlation factors calculated with BEST methods were lower; 0.858 and 0.827, respectively. Therefore, the application of the new α* parameter to the steady state simplified Beerkan approach allows an easy, inexpensive way to estimate accurately Ks.

Radiation shielding and mechanical properties of Bi2O3–Na2O–TiO2–ZnO–TeO2 glass system

Sayyed, M.I.; Askin, Ali; Zaid, M.H.M.; Olukotun, S.F.; Khandaker, Mayeen Uddin; Tishkevich, Daria I.; Bradley, D.A.

Recently, heavy metal oxides (HMO) based glass systems attracted great attention to the scientific community to be used as an alternative to the conventional lead, lead composites and concrete based materials for protection of harmful radiation. In this work, we report the role of Bi2O3 on the mechanical and radiation shielding properties of Bi2O3–ZnO–TiO2–Na2O–TeO2 glass system as well as its mechanical behaviour. The mechanical properties of the glasses were calculated using Makishima-Mackenzie model and different shielding factors have been calculated using Monte Carlo simulation via Geant4 code and also using Phy-X software. The mechanical properties based on Makishima-Mackenzie model depend on the values of packing density (Vi) and dissociation energy (Gi) of the oxide constituents. The simulated values of the mass attenuation coefficient showed a good agreement between both approaches. The mass attenuation coefficient (MAC) at 0.284 MeV of the glass with 5 mol% of Bi2O3 is equal to 0.2083 cm2/g, at 0.662 MeV its equal to 0.0785 cm2/g, while at 1.33 MeV, its MAC is 0.0501 cm2/g. The transmitted percentage of the photons through the proposed glasses was found to rise with increasing the energy of the photon, while decreasing with rising the thickness of the glass sample. The transmission factor (TF) revealed that the greater the thickness of the glass, the lower the TF, and the better the shield. Also, the radiation protection efficiency of the glasses was enhanced with the addition of the Bi2O3. The glass sample with composition of 15Bi2O3–10ZnO–5TiO2–5Na2O–65TeO2 possesses the highest effective atomic number among the studied compositions and showed the lowest half value layer. From the obtained data, Bi2O3 seems to be a strong candidate for enhancing the gamma radiation attenuation factors in the bismuth-based tellurite glasses.

Effects of iron powder on properties of geopolymers subjected to different curing regimes

    Gulmez, Nihan; Kockal, Niyazi Ugur

Silica fume, slag and iron powder are by-products from various industries. In parallel with development of industrial technology, it is also known that these by-products which cause rapid pollution of the environment are also harmful to human health because they are easily respirable. For this reason, a series of experiments were carried out to determine physical and mechanical properties on samples prepared using different blend designs to examine the effect of factors such as curing conditions, binder type and waste iron powder content. Percentages of iron powder added to replace the aggregate are 10%, 20%, 30% and 40% by volume of slag aggregate. It was observed that the substitution of 30% by volume iron powder instead of slag in geopolymer mortars is the most effective in increasing splitting tensile strength. For 40% partial replacement of fine aggregates with iron powder, increases in compressive strength and flexural strength of slag-based mortars were 7.2% and 43.4%, respectively, compared to mortar without iron powder at 60°C curing conditions.

Lycopene ameliorates propionic acid-induced autism spectrum disorders by inhibiting inflammation and oxidative stress in rats

    Erten, Fusun

This study was conducted to study lycopene efficacy in brain-behavior, pro-inflammatory and apoptotic markers, and antioxidant levels in a rodent model. Rats were administered with propionic acid (PPA) (500 mg/kg BW) to induce autism-like disorders, then treated with different lycopene (L) concentrations (5, 10, 20 mg kg−1 day−1) for 35 days. The groups were: (i);control, (ii);PPA, (iii);PPA + L5, (iv);PPA + L10, and (v);PPA + L20. In this study, serum and brain malondialdehyde (MDA) levels decreased with lycopene supplements compared to the PPA group, similarly to the brain levels of inflammatory factors (IL-1α, IL-8, NF-κB, TNF-α; p <.05). Besides, brain levels of anti-apoptotic Bcl-2 decreased, whereas pro-apoptotic Bax, antioxidant Nrf2, and HO-1 levels in brain increased compared with PPA (p <.05). This study showed that lycopene might have therapeutic value to improve the dysfunctions in learning and memory in a dose-dependent way, along with the antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and antiapoptotic molecular responses in a rat model of ASD-like disorders. Practical applications: This study suggested that lycopene can reduce propionic acid (PPA)-induced learning and memory impairment and oxidative damage by participating in multiple biological activities such as antioxidant, and anti-inflammatory effects. Lycopene protects serum and brain tissues against PPA induced oxidative damage in rats. These effects may be realized through up-regulation of the brain Nrf2/HO-1 pathway and down-regulation of the IL-1α, IL-8, TNF-α, and NF-κB levels. Lycopene may also contribute to memory and learning function, apoptotic/antiapoptotic modulation, and antioxidant and possible therapeutic efficacy in PPA-induced- Autism spectrum disorder cases.

In vitro biological activity of Salvia fruticosa Mill. infusion against amyloid β-peptide-induced toxicity and inhibition of GSK-3β, CK-1δ, and BACE-1 enzymes relevant to Alzheimer's disease

Gürbüz, Perihan; Dokumacı, Alim Hüseyin; Gündüz, Miyase Gözde; Perez, Concepcion; Göger, Fatih; Paksoy, Mehmet Yavuz; Yerer, Mükerrem Betül; Ömür Demirezer, L.

Salvia species have been traditionally used to improve cognition and have been proved to be a potential natural treatment for Alzheimer's disease. Salvia fruticosa Mill. (Turkish sage or Greek sage) demonstrated to have anticholinergic effects in vitro. The aim of this study was to understand the mechanism underlying the neuroprotective effects of S. fruticosa infusion and its representative compound rosmarinic acid, which was detected by LC-DAD-ESI-MS/MS. The protective effects of the S. fruticosa infusion (SFINF) and its major substance rosmarinic acid (RA) on amyloid beta 1–42 -induced cytotoxicity on SH-SY5Y cells together with p-GSK-3β activation were investigated. Their in vitro inhibitory effects against glycogen synthase kinase 3β, β-secretase, and casein kinase 1δ enzymes were also evaluated. The results showed that treatment with the all tested concentrations, SFINF significantly decreased Aβ 1–42-induced cytotoxicity and exhibited promising in vitro glycogen synthase kinase 3β inhibitory activity below 10 µg/mL (IC50 6.52 ± 1.14 µg/mL), in addition to β-secretase inhibition (IC50 86 ± 2.9 µg/mL) and casein kinase 1δ inhibition (IC50 121.57 ± 4.00). The SFINF (100 µg/mL and 250 µg/mL) also activated the expression of p-GSK-3β in amyloid beta 1–42 treated SH-SY5Y cells. The outcomes of this study demonstrated that the S. fruticosa infusion possessed activity to prevent amyloid beta 1–42 -induced neurotoxicity and provided proof that its mechanism may involve regulation of p-GSK-3β protein.

Pala, Ayşegül; Serdar, Osman; Mişe Yonar, Serpil; Yonar, Muhammet Enis

Chlorpyrifos (CPF) is an organophosphate pesticide that is frequently and widely used to control both agricultural and domestic pests worldwide. In this study, the protective effect of Fennel (Foeniculum vulgare) essential oil (FEO) was investigated in carp (Cyprinus carpio) exposed to CPF. The fish were divided into six groups that one control group (no treatment) and five experimental groups (FEO (3ml/100g diet) group, CPF1 (0.023 mg/l) group CPF2 (0.046 mg/l) group, CPF1 (0.023 mg/l) plus FEO (3ml/100g diet) group, CPF2 (0.046 mg/l) plus FEO (3ml/100g diet) group). Blood and tissue (liver, kidney, gill, and brain) samples were taken from the fish at the end of 14 days of application. Hemoglobin (Hb) level, nitoblue tetrazolium (NBT) activity, and total immunoglobulin (TI) level were measured in blood samples of fish. Acetylcholinesterase (AChE) activity was determined in brain tissue while malondialdehyde (MDA) level, reduced glutathione (GSH) level, catalase (CAT), and glutathione peroxidase (GPx) activity were determined in liver, kidney, and gill tissues. The results showed that there was a significant decrease in Hb level, NBT activity, and TI levels in CPF-treated fish compared to the control group. In addition, increased in MDA levels and significant decreases in GSH level, AChE, CAT, and GPx activities were observed in CPF-treated groups. However, FEO-treated was showed a significant improvement in all parameters except AChE activity compared to CPF groups. These study findings showed that FEO could improve CPF-induced toxicity in C. carpio, except inhibition of AChE activity.

Analysis of heavy metal contamination in surface sediments of Iskenderun Bay, Turkey

Kutlu, Banu; Özcan, Tahir; Özcan, Gülnaz

The ecological risk resulting from the accumulation of some heavy metals in the sediments of Iskenderun Bay was assessed using the following measures: enrichment and contamination factor, pollution load index (PLI), and potential ecological risk index (RI). The concentrations of the studied heavy metals were in the following order: Fe > Ni > Mn > Cr > Zn > Cu > As > Pb > Cd > Hg. Ni and As had the highest EF values. This situation is most likely due to the presence of iron, pesticide, and fertilizer plants in the region. According to the United States Environmental Protection Agency, Ni, As, Mn, and Cr may have harmful effects on faunal communities in sediments. According to the RI, Site 4 was more contaminated and toxic than the other seven study sites, with "moderate"ecological risk. Pearson's correlation coefficient was determined by multivariate methods - cluster and principal component analysis. As can be inferred from the RI values, the potential toxic effect of As and Ni in the sediments is moderate.

An effective method to improve nonlinearity value of substitution boxes based on random selection

    Artuğer, Fırat; Özkaynak, Fatih

In today's digital society, new design alternatives are needed for substitution box structures, which has critical importance in developing secure information systems that are resistant to algebraic and application attacks, as new attacks negatively affect designs based on mathematical transformations. Although random selection-based substitution box structures are a good alternative against algebraic and application attacks, the low value of nonlinearity criterion is an important problem. Solution suggestions using optimization algorithms have been proposed to address this problem. “Information Sciences 523 (2020) 152–166” is the study that reached the highest nonlinearity value based on optimization algorithms to date. However, the high computational costs of optimization algorithms are another challenge that must be overcome. In this study, it has been shown that the nonlinearity values of random (chaotic) selection substitution box structures can be improved as much as mathematically based designs by using a method that is too simple to compare with optimization algorithms. It has been shown that the nonlinearity value can be improved up to 110 for random selection-based substitution box designs. Although this nonlinearity value is the highest achievable value in the literature based on the random selection principle, the fact that it requires only 2×255×255 processes in the worst case has been evaluated as an important success of the proposed method compared to other design approaches. Other advantages of the proposed method are that the improved substitution box structures are resistant to side-channel attacks, simple structure, easy hardware implementation, and successful results in practical applications such as image encryption. It is believed that all these results will be a motivation for new post-processing techniques to be designed in the future for random selection-based substitution box designs.

Smart airport: Evaluation of performance standards and technologies for a smart logistics zone

    Göcxmen, Elifcan

Owing to the current context of Industry 4.0, the importance of smart technologies in airport systems have increased substantially. State-of-art applications for transportation planning incorporating baggage services, routing, security, and safety are an evolving domain for both practitioners and researchers dealing with aviation applications. In this context, this paper seeks to answer these questions: Which standards are aimed at a smart airport to make the transportation planning sound? Which propositions are made based on the obtained prioritized standards? This study deals with standards including Environmental Effects, Docking & Navigation, Object Detection & Protection, Communications & Integration, and Terminology using a practical decision support system based on an analytical hierarchy process (AHP) and fuzzy inference system (FIS). Computational results reveal that the Object Detection & Protection standard has an effect on a safe and smart system. To give an overview of this standard for a smart logistics zone (SLZ), an architecture of autonomous robot units and a baggage handling system is proposed in this study. The suggested approach analyzes the obstacle photos obtained by cameras and allows the end-user to control the calculations visually. This research could provide advice to airport planners about smart policies and improving operations.

Comparison of heat transfer and condensation on the walls of buildings constructed with iron profiles versus other classic models

    Kahraman, Gökhan

This study aims to present the evaluation of the thermal performance and the amount of condensation on the walls of a building with iron profiles under steady-state conditions. Elazig, situated in the east part of Turkey, was chosen for fieldwork. In this region, minimum average temperature is around 1°C during winter. Calculations are made in a real wall model and three different wall model scenarios. Estimated advantages and disadvantages of these have been investigated. Heat transfer and condensation amount are taken as variables. In four different building component models, the required amount of energy during the heating period is calculated month by month. Calculations reveal the resistance of the wall without application of insulation material with iron profile is higher than of the other three wall types. The wall built with betopen and iron profile saves 37.5% more energy than the wall with bricks. When the iron-profiled wall model is compared with the insulated brick wall, it is observed that energy savings are similar, but calculations show condensation begins on the iron profile wall. Iron profile buildings become popular increasingly in rural areas. As a result of this study, it is observed that iron profile buildings are advantageous in terms of energy saving compared to other building component models. However, condensation is inevitable in wall components of iron profile buildings and so the damage in the buildings is more than just a disadvantage, it is an irreversible result.

Preservice teachers' nomophobia levels, sense of loneliness and adjustment to college life

Çevik-Durmaz, Yadigar; Yalçinkaya-Önder, Eylem; Timur, Serkan

Purpose: The aim of this study was to investigate whether preservice teachers' nomophobia levels, sense of loneliness and adjustment to university life vary based on their demographic characteristics. Additionally, regression analyses were carried out to determine whether their sense of loneliness, nomophobia levels, and adjustment to university life were predictors of each other. Design and Methods: In this quantitative study, the cross-sectional survey research model was used. A total of 234 preservice teachers, 65 of whom were studying at the elementary mathematics department, 81 of whom were studying at the preschool education department, and 88 of whom were studying at the science education department, participated in this study. Independent-samples t test, one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) and simple linear regression analyses were used to analyze the quantitative data. Findings: The main conclusions from this study were that (a) the students with the highest sense of loneliness were the students of the elementary mathematics department, the students with the highest level of nomophobia were the science education students, and the students who adjusted the most to university life were the preschool education students. (b) There were no significant differences between the 1st and 2nd year preservice teachers in terms of their sense of loneliness, nomophobia levels, and adjustment to university life. (c) There were statistically significant differences between the mean total nomophobia scores of the male and female students in favor of the females especially in the “losing connectedness” and “not being able to access information” subscales of nomophobia. (d) A statistically significant difference was found between the preservice teachers whose mothers were high school and university graduates in terms of their academic adjustment in favor of the preservice teachers with mothers who had university degrees. (e) The preservice teachers, who stated that their relationship with their family was very good, had higher levels of sense of loneliness, mobile phone addiction, and adjustment to university life than the others. The results were statistically significant in all total scores of the loneliness scale and dimensions except for the dimensions of nomophobia. (f) The students who were hopeful for the future had a high sense of loneliness and adjustment to university life. It was also determined that the students who were desperate for their future had high mobile phone addiction levels. Apart from nomophobia and its dimensions and the social adjustment dimension of university life, statistically significant differences were found between the hopeful and hopeless students in terms of their sense of loneliness and adjustment to university life. (g) Statistically significant mean differences were found between the students who were generally satisfied with and those that were not satisfied with their life in terms of their sense of loneliness and adjustment to university life with its all dimensions in favor of the satisfied ones. (h) The preservice teachers who lived alone at home had a higher sense of loneliness and better adjustment to university life. It was also noteworthy that the students living in dormitories had higher nomophobia levels than the others. (i) A linear relationship was found between the students' sense of loneliness and adjustment to university life, and sense of loneliness was a significant predictor of adjustment to university life. Practical Implications: Determining students' nomophobia levels, sense of loneliness, and adjustment to university life would be beneficial in bringing students who have difficulty adapting to new living environments into social life.

The epiphytic bryophyte communities of the Altindere Valley (Macka, Trabzon, Turkey) were studied. A total of 59 releves, taken from living tree trunks in different vegetation periods of 2018 and 2020, were analysed according to the Braun-Blanquet methodology, and the releves were also ordinated and classified using the Detrended Correspondence Analysis (DECORANA) and the Two-Way Indicator Species Analysis (TWINSPAN). As a result of the analyses, Alleniella besseri-Leucodontetum immersi as. nov., Plagiomnio undulati-Raduletum lindbergianae typicum and P.-R. leucodontetosum sciuroidis subas. nov. (Neckerion complanatae) were described and characterised as a new epiphytic. Mnietum cuspidati, Homalothecio sericei-Neckeretum besseri and Brachythecietum populei-isothecietosum alopecuroidis were also described as new to Turkey, whereas Brachythecietum populei typicum was recorded for the second time in Turkey.

Chemical compositions, radical scavenging capacities and antimicrobial activities in seeds of satureja hortensis l. And mentha spicata l. subsp. spicata from turkey; [Composições químicas, capacidades radicais eliminadoras e atividades antimicrobianas em sementes de satureja hortensis l. E mentha spicata l. subsp. spicata da turquia]

    Emre, İ.; Kurşat, M.; Yilmaz, Ö.; Erecevi̇, P.

The present study determined some biological compounds, radical scavenging activity and antimicrobial capacity in seeds of Satureja hortensis L. and Mentha spicata L. subsp. spicata. Alpha-linolenic acid (C18:3 n3) has been found to be the major polyunsaturated fatty acid of Satureja hortensis L. (66.24 ± 1.24%) and Mentha spicata L. subsp. spicata (48.17 ± 1.01%). Linoleic acid (C18:2 n6) is identified as the second major polyunsaturated fatty acid in the present study and oleic acid (C18:1 n9) is determined as the major monounsaturated fatty acid. Current study showed that Satureja hortensis L. and Mentha spicata L. subsp. spicata have low levels of saturated fatty acids. It has been demonstrated that ergosterol (263.1 ± 2.14 µg/g), stigmasterol (39.07 ± 0.91 µg/g) and beta-sitosterol (14.64 ± 0.49 µg/g) have been found in Mentha spicata L. subsp. spicata, while ergosterol (69.41 ± 1.75 µg/g) and beta-sitosterol (19.81 ± 1.14 µg/g) have been determined in Satureja hortensis L. Also, this study determined that Satureja hortensis L. and Mentha spicata L. subsp. spicata have low lipide-soluble vitamin content. Furthermore, it has been found that Satureja hortensis L. contains naringenin (612.57 ± 2.57 µg/g), morin (86.97 ± 1.12 µg/g), quercetin (22.87 ± 0.75 µg/g), and kaempferol (20.11 ± 0.94 µg/g) while naringenin (135.91 ± 1.91 µg/g), naringin (61.23 ± 2.15 µg/g) and quercetin (47.51 ± 1.17 µg/g) have been detected as major flavonoids in the seeds of Mentha spicata L. subsp. spicata. The results of the present study suggest that methanol extracts of Satureja hortensis L. and Mentha spicata L. subsp. spicata have significant free radical scavenging activity. The present results revealed that Satureja hortensis L. and Mentha spicata L. subsp. spicata showed major activity against gram-positive and gram-negative microorganisms, fungi and yeast.

Kök, Mediha; Aydoğdu, Kumruya; Kanca, M. Sait; Qader, Ibrahim Nazem; Öner, Ecem; Coşkun, Meltem

Heusler shape memory alloys are important for many applications due to their typical magnetic and shape memory behaviors. In this study, a Ni50Mn36Sn12Co2 (at.%) alloy was manufactured by arc-melting technique, then the ingot cooled to ambient temperature in the natural atmosphere. Three different temperatures, including 500 °C (773 K), 700 °C (973 K), and 900 °C (1173 K), was selected for aging the samples cut from the main ingot. The impact of aging on the crystalline; microstructure; caloric; and magnetic properties of the alloys were investigated through x-ray diffraction (XRD); scanning electron microscope; differential scanning calorimetric (DSC), differential thermal analysis, and thermal gravimetric (TG); and physical property measuring system was investigated, respectively. The aging in different temperatures led to the shift DSC curve, such that the martensitic phase transformation temperatures of the sample aged at 773 K increased, however, the transformation at 973 and 1173 K decreased compared to the as-casted alloy. The different phase transformation behavior showed that the alloy aged at 773 K has the maximum elastic energy, enthalpy and entropy change compared to the reset of samples, on the other hand, its crystallite sized obtained from XRD analysis comparably diminished. Besides, the TG analysis revealed that the mass gain almost occurs at a temperature above 773 K, therefore the magnetization of the alloys aged at 973 and 1173 K decreased due to a thin oxide layer formed on the surface of the alloys.
