- MakaleAçık Erişim2021Scopus SJRQ3Optimization of the adsorption of methyl green dye on almond shells using central composite design
Tanaydin, Mehmet Kayra; Goksu, Ali
Almond shells, known as the agricultural industry’s waste, were utilized to adsorb methyl green dye from aqueous solutions. The effects of initial concentration (2–10 mg/L), the adsorbent dosage (0.1–0.5 g), shaking speed (150–250 rpm), pH (4–7), temperature (20°C–50°C), and particle size (137–892 μm) on methyl green adsorption on the almond shell were examined. The response surface methodology was used to optimize the methyl green dye’s adsorption process using the almond shell. The central composite design was utilized to obtain optimum experimental conditions. Performed experiments obtained the isotherm data, and it was analyzed by utilizing the Langmuir, Freundlich, and Temkin isotherm models. The isotherm data can be fitted well by the Langmuir model. The pseudo-second-order model can anticipate the adsorption kinetics. The thermodynamic parameters such as ΔG° ΔH°, and ΔS° were calculated and found to be –2.878, 42.12 kJ/mol, and 0.151 kJ/mol K, respectively. These values demonstrated that the present adsorption process was feasible, spontaneous, and endothermic in the temperature scope of (20°C–50°C). This study indicates that almond shells were considered an efficient adsorbent to remove from the aqueous solutions. The maximum adsorption capacity of the almond shell (1.1 mg/g) was obtained. In this system, the almond shell’s pre-activation process was not preferred because it will create an extra cost. Adsorption kinetics studies showed that the model is represented as a pseudo-second-order of adsorption data.

- Kitap BölümüYalnız künye2021Fine–kinney occupational risk assessment method and its extensions by fuzzy sets: A state-of-the-art review
Gul, Muhammet; Mete, Suleyman; Serin, Faruk; Celik, Erkan
The Fine–Kinney method (Fine in J Saf Res 3:157–166, 1971; Kinney and Wiruth in Practical risk analysis for safety management. Naval Weapons Center, pp 1–20, 1976), which was first introduced as an occupational health and safety risk analysis tool in the 1970s, is a systematic methodology that provides a mathematical formula for calculating the risk that arises due to a specified hazard. In the traditional version of Fine–Kinney as suggested in its original version, a risk score (RS) is calculated as a result of mathematical multiplication of probability (P), exposure (E), and consequence (C) parameters. These calculated risk scores are used to establish priorities for the corrective efforts in order to eliminate risks or reduce their effects to a reasonable level. This simple and useful method is preferred and implemented by small and medium-sized enterprises. In the academic literature, it has been applied for many risk analysis problems, although it includes several drawbacks recently revealed. In this method, no weight assignment is made for each risk parameter. Also, it is hard to assess consequence, exposure, and probability, precisely. Multi-criteria decision making (MCDM) is a pool of methods used in occupational health and safety risk analysis both by international standard-setting organizations and scholars from the literature. In classical MCDM methods, performance values and weights of decision criteria are known precisely and are specified with crisp numbers. However, many real-world problems contain uncertainties, and the knowledge and judgment of experts cannot be expressed precisely. Fuzzy-based MCDM methods, which are developed to reflect types and degrees of uncertainties better, produce more accurate results compared to classical methods. In this chapter, we first present the basics of Fine–Kinney method, including its implementing procedure, basic terminology, and drawbacks. Then, we provide a state-of-the-art review of Fine–Kinney occupational risk assessment method and its extensions by fuzzy sets. Graphical results obtained from the review are demonstrated to show the current state. Future work suggestions are also included to the chapter to show the possible gaps and possible opportunities.

- MakaleYalnız künye2021Scopus SJRQ1Extension of FEMA and SMUG models with Bayesian best-worst method for disaster risk reduction
Yanilmaz, Sumeyye; Baskak, Dilber; Yucesan, Melih; Gul, Muhammet
Turkey is one of the countries that face many natural and man-made disasters. The entire geography of Turkey is affected by these disasters and the secondary disasters resulting from them. Tunceli is located in the Eastern Anatolia Region of Turkey and is a disaster-prone region. Therefore, it is important to carry out an adaptable hazard analysis for the region and support the national disaster risk reduction struggle. In this study, a comprehensive disaster hazard analysis was conducted for Tunceli province, and potential mitigation measures were discussed. As methodological background, FEMA (Federal Emergency Management Agency) and SMUG (Seriousness Manageability Urgency Growth) models, which are well-known methods, were extended under the Bayesian Best-Worst Method (BWM). Bayesian BWM is a pairwise comparison-based multi-criteria decision-making method that takes a probabilistic view of the experts' group decision without losing information, providing less pairwise comparison and higher consistency. Nine different disaster hazards for the Tunceli region are prioritized by the proposed approach. Initially, weights of the risk parameters in FEMA and SMUG and the priority values of disaster hazards based on each parameter were calculated. Then, ranking orders were determined. In addition, more precise evaluations were made for the results obtained with the credal ranking graphs. Some comparative studies were also included in the study to test the solidity of the approach. According to the results, both models showed that the top priority hazard for Tunceli is “earthquake”. Also, flood, mass movement, terrorism, and epidemics are hazards with higher priority to be taken into account. Considering the final preference values of disaster hazards for Tunceli province, the first three hazards for the FEMA model are earthquake with 0.192, mass movement with 0.141 and flood with 0.114, respectively. In the SMUG model, earthquake with 0.194, flood with 0.129 and epidemic disease with 0.120 are in the first three places.

- MakaleYalnız künye2021Scopus SJRQ1Effect of waste textile dye adsorbed almond shell on self compacting mortar
Cemalgil, Selim; Onat, Onur; Tanaydın, Mehmet Kayra; Etli, Serkan
The aim of the current experimental study is to investigate the effect of waste textile dye absorbed almond shell on fresh and mechanical characteristics of self-compacting mortar (SCMs). In this context, eight SCMs were designed by substituting Violet Dye Solution adsorbed Almond shell (VDSA) at the rate of 0%, 2.5%, 5.0%, 7.5%, 10.0%, 12.5%, 15.0% and 17.5% as a cement on weight basis including the control mix. To measure the rheological properties of SCMs, mini slump and V-Funnel tests were conducted. A total of 72 beams of 40x40x160 mm3 dimension specimens were casted and immersed in water curing at the end of the 7, 28 and 56 days to determine the mechanical parameters. 48 cubes of 50x50x50 mm3 dimensions were casted and kept in the curing tank to determine durability characteristics such as porosity, sorptivity and specific gravity. Quantitative analyses are also performed by using Scanning Electron Microscopes (SEM), X-ray Diffraction Analysis (XRD), Energy-Dispersive X-ray Spectroscopy (EDS) and Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR). The experimental results indicated that as the content of VDSA enchases, a remarkable enhancement in flexural strength at early days age and 28 days age strength. Whereas, increasing the content of VDSA resulted in a considerable decrease in compressive strength higher than 5%.

- MakaleAçık Erişim2021Scopus SJRQ2Study on the thermal and electrical properties of novel poly[propyl acrylate-co-phenyl methacrylate] containing acetamido group
Biryan, Fatih; Pihtili, Güzin
In the available research, firstly a new 3-acetamido phenyl acrylate (APhA) monomer and a novel copolymer containing acetamido phenyl group were synthesized. 3-acetamido phenyl acrylate (APhA) monomer was acquired by the reaction of acryloyl chloride and N-(3-hydroxyphenyl) acetamide. 3-acetamido propyl methacrylate (AAPMA) monomer was prepared in our previous study. A series of copolymers were prepared using these monomers in different mole ratios by free-radical polymerization method at 70 °C The structure of P(AAPMA-co-APhA) copolymer systems was characterized by FT-IR and NMR techniques. Thermal characteristics of P(AAPMA-co-APhA) copolymers were evaluated through thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and differential scanning calorimeter (DSC) in an N2 atmosphere. Due to the presence of the amide group, we can say that the polymer with the least weight loss and the highest residue percentage at 500 °C is poly(APhA). AC electrical conductivity and dielectric and electrical parameters were analyzed in a range of 100 Hz–20 kHz frequency. The dielectric constant values of poly(AAPMA-co-APhA0.63) and P(AAPMA-co-APhA0.30) were 4.98 and 4.57 respectively. According to the results, the dielectric value decreased as the APhA units increased.

- MakaleAçık Erişim2021Scopus SJRQ1A novel approach for efficient stance detection in online social networks with metaheuristic optimization
Can, Umit; Alatas, Bilal
In the 19th and 20th centuries, social networks have been an important topic in a wide range of fields from sociology to education. However, with the advances in computer technology in the 21st century, significant changes have been observed in social networks, and conventional networks have evolved into online social networks. The size of these networks, along with the large amount of data they generate, has introduced new social networking problems and solutions. Social network analysis methods are used to understand social network data. Today, several methods are implemented to solve various social network analysis problems, albeit with limited success in certain problems. Thus, the researchers develop new methods or recommend solutions to improve the performance of the existing methods. In the present paper, a novel optimization method that aimed to classify social network analysis problems was proposed. The problem of stance detection, an online social network analysis problem, was first tackled as an optimization problem. Furthermore, a new hybrid metaheuristic optimization algorithm was proposed for the first time in the current study, and the algorithm was compared with various methods. The analysis of the findings obtained with accuracy, precision, recall, and F-measure classification metrics demonstrated that our method performed better than other methods.

Evans, I.S.; Çılğın, Z.; Bayrakdar, C.; Canpolat, E.
The Taurus Mountains of southwest Turkey are split into numerous separated ranges, of which eleven supported former glaciers. We describe cirques and related moraines in four new locations, as well as those in seven ranges where glaciation was previously known. This gives a complete inventory of the 85 cirques in southwest Turkey. These are comparable in size to those elsewhere, but narrower and often less developed. Lengths averaging 672 m are high relative to widths of 542 m. Overall axial gradients average 22.4°. Cirque floor altitudes are controlled largely by altitudes of the mountains above, but they also vary in relation to precipitation, in sympathy with ELAs (Equilibrium Line Altitudes) of former glaciers. In most ranges where glaciers were short (extending little beyond cirques), ELA can be predicted from mean mid-floor altitude. Our observations demonstrate lower ELAs than in previous literature. Both ELAs and cirque floors rise eastward in the west, and northward inland from the coast. This supports the importance of winds from the west and southwest, off the Mediterranean Sea, bringing LGM (Last Glacial Maximum) conditions wetter than present to mountains near the coast. Cirques face on average a little east of north, showing the effects of shade and differential solar radiation receipt.

Background: Lupinus albus is a member of the Fabaceae family. As a natural or cultivat-ed plant, Lupinus albus is distributed in Europe, the Balkans and Turkey, especially in Marmara and Aegean regions. The lupine is a nutritious and protective plant against diabetes. Objective: In the present study, the effects of Lupinus albus fruits on malondialdehyde (MDA), reduced glutathione (GSH), total protein, ADEK vitamins, and cholesterol values, which are the indi-cators of oxidative damage and antioxidant defense. In this regard, muscle, liver, renal, and brain tissues of STZ-induced type I diabetes rats were studied. Methods: The analyzes of ADEK vitamins and cholesterol levels in tissues were performed via Shimadzu HPLC device. The lipid peroxidation levels were measured at 532 nm in spectrophotome-ter. Determination of GSH was read at 412 nm against blank, and for the total protein levels Lowry method was applied. Results: According to the results obtained, it was determined that among the rats with induced type I diabetes, the group applied lupine fruit extract was found to have increased GSH level and decreased MDA levels in all the tissues. The protein values were increased in liver tissues but decreased in the other tissues. The level of vitamins was significantly increased in almost all the tissues in the diabetic group. Conclusion: In the present study, it was shown that the lupine reduced the devastating effects of type I diabetes by decreasing the fasting blood glucose and lipid peroxidation values and increasing the glutathione level in comparison to the diabetic group.

Gul, Muhammet; Mete, Suleyman; Serin, Faruk; Celik, Erkan
In this chapter, we improved Fine–Kinney occupational risk assessment approach with interval type-2 fuzzy QUALIFLEX (IT2FQUALIFLEX). QUALIFLEX is an outranking multi-attribute decision-making method proposed by an extension of the Paelinck’s (Pap Reg Sci Assoc 36:59–74,[1]), generalized Jacquet-Lagreze’s permutation method. Similar to other outranking solution-based approaches, it considers the solution which is a comparison of hazards. In this chapter, we adapted the interval type-2 fuzzy sets (IT2FSs) into QUALIFLEX as it reflects the uncertainty well in decision-making. IT2FQUALIFLEX algorithm under the Fine–Kinney concept provides a useful and solid approach to the occupational health and safety risk assessment. In addition to proposing this new approach, a case study is performed in the chrome plating unit. A validation is also performed in this study. Finally, the proposed approach is implemented in Python.

- Kitap BölümüYalnız künye2021Fine–kinney-based occupational risk assessment using interval type-2 fuzzy topsis
Gul, Muhammet; Mete, Suleyman; Serin, Faruk; Celik, Erkan
This chapter proposed an improved Fine–Kinney occupational risk assessment approach using a well-known MCDM method “TOPSIS” under interval type-2 fuzzy set concept. It is defined as a technique for order preference by similarity to ideal solution by Hwang and Yoon [1]. It is based on separation from ideal and anti-ideal solution concept. Since the initial crisp data-based version is insufficient by time in reflecting the uncertainty in decision-maker’s opinions, fuzzy sets are integrated to the TOPSIS algorithm to provide a solid and comprehensive method. Interval type-2 fuzzy set is an improved version of the type-1 fuzzy set. It is also a special version of a general type-2 fuzzy set. Since general type-2 fuzzy systems contain complex computational operations, they cannot be easily applied to real-world problems such as occupational risk assessment. Interval type-2 fuzzy sets are the most frequently used type-2 fuzzy sets due to their ability in handling more uncertainty and producing more accurate and solid results. The Fine–Kinney concept is merged with the interval type-2 fuzzy set concept and TOPSIS for the first time through the literature. To demonstrate the applicability of the proposed approach, a case study is carried out in a chrome plating unit of a gun factory. Some beneficial validation and sensitivity analysis are also performed. Finally, as a creative contribution of our book, the implementation of the proposed approach in Python is performed.

Several studies are conducted to reduce the salt and various strategies are being developed for this purpose. Consumption of processed meat products is often preferred and salt is used for purposes such as ripening, flavouring, and preservation during their production. Many studies have shown that the excessive salt consumption has negative health effects and so that reducing sodium is important. In this study, the physical and sensory quality of the marinated anchovy produced with potassium salt instead of sodium salt was investigated. Anchovy used in this study was purchased from a local fish market as filleted. Anchovy fillets were transported to the laboratory in ice. Anchovy marinades were produced on the same day. The study consisted of 5 groups and all groups were produced the same day. During the marination acid and salt amounts and pH were monitored. Proximate composition (protein, fat, ash, moisture, sodium, and potassium), physical (colour measurement, cooking loss, texture profile analyses), and sensory (appearance-colour, odour, taste, texture, overall acceptability) quality analyses were performed on day 0. As a result, the best partial sodium replacement was obtained with 50% potassium salt by preserving the physical and sensory quality as in marinates prepared with only 100% sodium salt.

The genus Verbascum, commonly known as "mullein", bears several species traditionally used to treat various infections, inflammations and wounds. In this study, extracts from V. bombyciferum, an endemic Verbascum species from Turkey, obtained by different solvents and extraction techniques, were investigated for their bioactive contents using spectrophotometry and high-performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (HPLC-MS/MS) and evaluated for their antioxidant, as well as enzyme inhibitory potentials. While spectrophotometric determination revealed the homogenizer assisted extraction/methanolic extract to yield the highest total phenolic and flavonoid contents (41.80 ± 0.70 mg GAE/g and 39.44 ± 0.30 mg RE/g, respectively), the most significant total bioactive compounds (polyphenols) in the amount of 272.862 mg kg−1, established by HPLC-MS/MS analysis, was noted for the maceration/methanolic extract. Overall, the extracts showed varied antioxidant potency, displaying free radical scavenging ability (DPPH assay: 1.04–51.33 mg TE/g; ABTS assay: 80.04–85.60 mg TE/g), reducing power (CUPRAC: 51.48–183.26 mg TE/g; FRAP: 36.33–90.04 mg TE/g; metal chelating activity (18.48–19.80 mg EDTAE/g) and total antioxidant capacity (phosphomolybdenum assay: 0.78–1.92 mmol TE/g). However, extract of homogenizer assisted extraction/methanol exhibited the highest antioxidant activity in most assays. Only the maceration/methanolic extract inhibited all the studied enzymes (acetylcholinetserase: 2.02 ± 0.20 mg GALAE/g; butyrylcholinesterase: 4.57 ± 0.09 mg GALAE/g; tyrosinase 21.44 ± 3.41 mg KAE/g and amylase: 0.46 ± 0.01 mmol ACAE/g). This study is the first attempt to highlight the potential industrial applications of the endemic plant V. bombyciferum, as a natural source of bioactive compounds that could be considered for future development of phytopharmaceuticals, targeting specific oxidative stress-linked diseases including diabetes, skin hyperpigmentation, and neurological disorders.

Kaya, Yunus; Arslan, Sevda; Erbaş, Atiye; Yaşar, Beril Nisa; Küçükkelepçe, Gülhan Erkuş
Background: Factors affecting intercultural sensitivity and care are becoming an increasingly important issue due to ethnic diversity. Nurses play a crucial role in care and therefore should keep up with this trend and improve their intercultural sensitivity. Objective and design: This descriptive cross-sectional study investigated the effects of ethnocentrism and moral sensitivity on intercultural sensitivity in nursing students. Methods and participants: Data were collected using a demographic characteristics questionnaire and the Intercultural Sensitivity Scale, Generalized Ethnocentrism Scale, and Moral Sensitivity Scale. The sample consisted of 1343 nursing students. The Pearson correlation coefficient was used to determine correlations between scale scores. Multiple linear regression was used to determine the effects of ethnocentrism, moral sensitivity, and demographic characteristics on intercultural sensitivity. Results: Intercultural sensitivity was found to be negatively correlated with ethnocentrism and positively correlated with moral sensitivity. Ethnocentrism predicted intercultural sensitivity more than moral sensitivity. Ethnocentrism and moral sensitivity explained 16.8% of the total variance of intercultural sensitivity. However, ethnocentrism affected intercultural sensitivity more than moral sensitivity did (beta = −0.406). Conclusion: Nursing education should adopt strategies to reduce ethnocentrism by helping students develop cultural competence and intercultural sensitivity. Such education can equip nurses to provide higher quality care to patients of different cultural backgrounds.

- MakaleYalnız künye2021Scopus SJRQ1Identification of failure mechanisms in existing unreinforced masonry buildings in rural areas after April 4, 2019 earthquake in Turkey
Yön, Burak
Many unreinforced masonry buildings are completely destroyed after destructive earthquakes but, their failure mechanisms cannot be precisely determined. More specifically damage to such buildings is evinced during low or moderate magnitude earthquakes. The aim of this study is to identify the failure mechanisms of existing unreinforced masonry buildings and present a reconstruction strategy or offer strengthening procedures, in order to inhibit damage to masonry structures after destructive earthquakes. For this purpose, a moderate magnitude earthquake which occurred on April 4, 2019 near the township of Sivrice in Elazığ city, in the east of Turkey, was investigated. The magnitude of the studied seismic motion was expressed as Mw=5.2 by the Ministry of Interior Disaster and Emergency Management Presidency. Although this seismic effect was a moderate magnitude earthquake, significant failures occurred. Many masonry buildings and adobe dwellings in the villages of Sivrice were severely damaged by the earthquake. For field observations, ten villages located around the epicentre were visited 65 dwellings were observed and the damage patterns were assessed in detail. The observations showed that the main reasons for the damage to the dwellings were weak structural detailing of wall-to-wall and wall-to-roof connections, inhesion of earthen roofs, and a lack of bond beams in the structural walls. According to field observations, it is deduced that the performance of the undamaged masonry dwellings after earthquakes does not prove that they have adequate seismic safety. Therefore, reinforcing methods (shotcrete implementation, decreasing of space, corner reinforcing etc.) and innovative strengthening procedures (fibre reinforced polymer) are recommended for the undamaged existing unreinforced buildings at the end of the paper.

In this study, cadmium, copper, nickel, zinc, chromium, manganese and lead were determined in Cladophora fracta present in Lake Hazar (Turkey). The health risks (non-carcinogenic and carcinogenic) of heavy metals associated with the use of Cladophora fracta as mulch were also determined. Bioconcentration factor (BCF) and metal pollution index (MPI) were calculated. When compared with reference value (1.5 mg/kg for Cr and 200 mg/kg for Mn), the highest accumulation by Cladophora fracta was seen in the month of June as 1442 ± 7.2% (23.13 mg/kg) for Cr and the lowest accumulation calculated in the month of July as 5 ± 0.2% (210 mg/kg) for Mn. In our study, the highest MPI value was 13.69 in September. The magnitude of MPI values of heavy metals determined during April to September appeared in the following order September > August > July > June > May > April. The HQing (hazard quotient due to ingestion) and HQinh (hazard quotient due to inhalation) in all months were chidren > female > male while the order of HQder (hazard quotient due to dermal) was determined as male > female > children. Non-carcinogenic risk (HQ) and Hazard Index (HI) values in terms of ingestion, inhalation and dermal ways were lower than 1. Also, total HI values were < 1. As a result, there was not non-carcinogenic and carcinogenic risks associated with usage of Cladophora fracta as mulch.

Sorptivity is a parameter of primary importance in the study of unsaturated flow in soils. This hydraulic parameter is required to model water infiltration into vertical soil profiles. Sorptivity can be directly estimated from the soil hydraulic functions (water retention and hydraulic conductivity curves), using the integral formulation of . However, calculating sorptivity in this manner requires the prior determination of the soil hydraulic diffusivity and its numerical integration between initial and final saturation degrees, which may be difficult in some situations (e.g., coarse soil with diffusivity functions that are quasi-infinite close to saturation). In this paper, we present a procedure to compute sorptivity using a scaling parameter, cp, that corresponds to the sorptivity of a unit soil (i.e., unit values for all parameters and zero residual water content) that is utterly dry at the initial state and saturated at the final state. The cp parameter was computed numerically and analytically for five hydraulic models: Delta (i.e., Green and Ampt), Brooks and Corey, van Genuchten-Mualem, van Genuchten-Burdine, and Kosugi. Based on the results, we proposed brand new analytical expressions for some of the models and validated previous formulations for the other models. We also tabulated the output values so that they can easily be used to determine the actual sorptivity value for any case. At the same time, our numerical results showed that the relation between cp and the hydraulic shape parameters strongly depends on the chosen model. These results highlight the need for careful selection of the proper model for the description of the water retention and hydraulic conductivity functions when estimating sorptivity.
