Mechanical and fracture characteristics of self-compacting concretes containing different percentage of plastic waste powder

Gesoglu, Mehmet; Güneyisi, Erhan; Hansu, Osman; Etli, Serkan; Alhassan, Mahammed

This study addresses the mechanical and fracture properties of self-compacting concretes (SCCs) containing plastic waste (PW) powder in varying amounts used as a cement replacement material. Partial amount of cement was replaced by PW powder at 5%, 10%, 15%, 20% and 25% by weight so as to design six SCC mixtures with a constant slump flow of 700 ± 30 mm, total binder content of 550 kg/m3 and water-to-binder (w/b) ratio of 0.35. Mechanical characteristics of SCCs were tested for compressive and splitting tensile strengths, net flexural strength as well as modulus of elasticity at 28 day. Moreover, failure characteristics of the concrete were monitored via three-point bending test on the notched beams. The findings indicated that mechanical properties of PVC powder modified SCCs decreased while the concretes became less brittle.

Effect of temperature and nitrogen concentration on the growth and lipid content of Spirulina platensis and biodiesel production

Seyhaneyildiz Can, Safak; Koru, Edis; Cirik, Semra

In this study, Spirulina platensis (Cyanophyceae) was cultured at five mediums with different amounts of sodium nitrate and three different temperatures. The study was conducted at 1600 lx light intensity and a pH value of 9. The influences of nitrate amounts and temperature on biomass growth and lipid amount were studied during 20 days. The best biomass growth (1.039 ± 0.668 g L−1 dry weight and 0.780 ± 0.501 optical density) for S. platensis was obtained from the group with the temperature value of 35 °C and 2.5 g L−1 of sodium nitrate. The highest lipid production (4.70 ± 0.067% dry weight) was in the nitrate-free medium at 15 °C. The best results for biomass growth and lipid production were obtained from the group at 35 °C and 1.25 g L−1 of sodium nitrate (P < 0.05). At the end of the study, it was determined that algal biomass increased with increasing the nitrate amount but the produced lipid by the algae decreased. Intensive production was performed in accordance with the culture conditions of the most productive groups and biodiesel was obtained from the algae. The density, viscosity, and flash point of the biodiesel were calculated as 0.78, 4.67, and 107 °C, respectively.

Biochemical impacts of the textile dyes Remazol Brillant Blue R and Congo Red on the crayfish Astacus leptodactylus (Decapoda, Astacidae)

Aksu, Onder; Yildirim, Nuran Cikcikoglu; Danabas, Durali; Yildirim, Numan

In this study, we determined the effects of the textile dyes Remazol Brillant Blue R (RBBR) and Congo Red (CR) on the enzymatic activities of Glutathione S-Transferase (GST), cytochrome P450 (CYP1A1) and Lactate dehydrogenase (LDH), in hepatopancreas of Astacus leptodactylus. The crayfishes were exposed to 0.5, 1.0, and 2.0 mg/l of RBBR or CR, for 24 and 48 h. The recorded GST activity clearly increased after 24 or 48 h exposure to CR, compared to a control group (p<0.05), but the changes of GST activity depending on time and dose were not statistically significant in the RRBR group (p<0.05). The activity of CYP1A1 generally decreased, but LDH activity increased in the groups exposed to different doses of CR and RBBR, when compared to their control groups. Detoxification enzymes (as GST, and CYP1A1) and metabolic enzymes (as LDH) can be proven to make useful markers for further evaluating the physiological effects of CR and RBBR on crayfish.

Developments in transfer hydrogenations of aromatic ketones catalyzed by boron compounds

Pasa, Salih; Gürler, Nedim; Temel, Hamdi; Rafikova, Khadichakhan; Aydemir, Murat

Boron complexes BL1 and BL2 were prepared from O-donor ligands, 2,2′-(1E,1′E)-(ethane-1,2-diylbis(azan-1-yl-1-ylidene))bis(methane-1-yl-1-ylidene)diphenol (L1) and 2,2′-(propane-1,3-diylbis(azan-1-yl-1-ylidene))bis(methane-1-yl-1-ylidene)diphenol (L2). The complexes were fully characterized by 1H and 13C NMR, LC-MS/MS, TGA/DTA, UV-Vis, elemental analysis, SEM, and FTIR. The transfer hydrogenation of acetophenone derivatives was investigated by the boron complexes in the presence of isoPrOH, as the hydrogen source, under basic condition with NaOH. The results showed that the boron complexes were promising catalytic precursors for transfer hydrogenation of aromatic ketones in 0.1 M isoPrOH solution (up to 99%). Both steric and electronic factors of this class of molecules had a significant impact on the catalytic properties.

A cause and effect relationship model for location of temporary shelters in disaster operations management

    Celik, Erkan

The aim of the location of temporary shelter directly is to focus on helping the sufferers and injured people on disaster areas during and after a disaster. Facility location (location of temporary shelters) decisions play a critical role and affect directly performance of relief operations in disaster operations management (DOM). In this paper, a proactive decision-making tool by integrating decision-making trail and evaluation laboratory (DEMATEL) method with interval type-2 fuzzy sets (IT2FSs) is proposed to locate of temporary location in DOM. While DEMATEL method enables to analyse cause and effect relationship in decision-making process, the IT2FSs overcome ambiguity and vagueness of linguistic assessment of decision-makers through the DEMATEL. 14 different criteria for location of temporary shelters are considered by 9 disaster operation managers for evaluating the cause and effect factors. Beside the theoretical contribution of the proposed method, it provides practical benefits to disaster operation managers to perceive cause and effect relationship on location of temporary shelters.

The effect of Zirconia/Yttria/Silver substitutions on mechanostructure and cell viability of the synthesized bioceramic bone grafts

    Aksakal, Bunyamin; Demirel, Mehtap

Hydroxyapatite (HA) based biografts were synthesized by substitution of Zirconia (Zr), Yttria (Y2O3) and Silver (Ag) using the sol-gel method. Fabricated bone grafts (H40ZrYt and H50Yt10) were compared with a control biograft. The effects of Zr and Y2O3 and Ag additions on the morphological, mechanical and cell viability of the synthesized biografts were analyzed. The biografts were characterized by X-ray Diffractometer (XRD) and Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM). All biografts were then embedded into the drilled holes (D=3.2 mm) in rabbit femurs. The rabbits were then sacrificed after twelve weeks. Three-point bending (3-PB) tests were conducted on defected and grafted regions. Flexural strength values were found to be 347, 149 and 180 MPa, for the H40ZrYt, H50Yt10 and the control/commercial graft, respectively. Cell viability results indicated that the percentage viability ratios slightly increased after the substitution of Ag into the H50Yt10 biograft at 0.1 and 0.3 µg/ml concentrations and into the H40ZrYt biograft at a 0.1 µg/ml concentration. Although the cell viability was a bit lower in the H50Yt10 graft, the H40ZrYt graft achieved better results compared to the counterpart grafts. Furthermore, the hardness of both of the novel fabricated grafts were found to be higher than the control/commercial graft, however, as the flexture strength of H40ZrYt was higher but H50Yt10 was lower than the control/commercial graft.

The effect and characterization of newly synthesized SrBr2 reinforced bone grafts on structure and cell viability

Demirel, Mehtap; Aksakal, Bünyamin; Kaya, Ali İhsan

Abstract: In this study, a highly durable SrBr2 compound was added to Ca(NO3)2·4H2O, KOH, NaNO3, P2O5, and urea (CO(NH2)2) compounds at different ratios (wt 10–30%); biografts were synthesized in different compositions using the sol gel method They were characterized using X-ray diffraction, Fourier transform infrared spectrometer, scanning electron microscope, and mechanical tests e.g. hardness and compression. Structural, mechanical properties and cell viabilities of the synthesized biografts were comparatively examined. Fourier transform infrared spectrometer and X-ray diffraction analysis results showed that, including SrBr2, hydroxyapatite had formed in the biografts. Also, hardness and compression tests revealed that compressive stress and hardness values of the grafts increased as the amount of SrBr2 increased. The cell viability ratios also enhanced with the amount of SrBr2 increased in the synthesized biografts. Graphical Abstract: [InlineMediaObject not available: see fulltext.]

New solitary and optical wave structures to the (1 + 1)-dimensional combined KdV–mKdV equation

Bulut, Hasan; Sulaiman, Tukur A.; Baskonus, Haci Mehmet; Sandulyak, Anna A.

In this article, we employ the sine-Gordon expansion method to construct a new solitary and optical wave structures to the (1 + 1)-dimensional combined KdV–mKdV equation. Sine-Gordon expansion method is developed based on the travelling wave transformation u(x, y) = U(ξ), ξ = μ(x − ct) and the sine-Gordon equation uxx − utt = m2 sin(u). We find the travelling wave solutions to (1 + 1)-dimensional combined KdV–mKdV equation in the form of complex, hyperbolic, trigonometric and rational function. Our results show that all the travelling wave solutions we obtain are solitary and optical wave structures solutions. All the computations and graphics plot in this article are carried out with the help of Wolfram Mathematica 9.

Application of artificial neural networks using bayesian training rule in sales forecasting for furniture industry; [Primjena umjetnih neuronskih mreža uz pomoć Bayesova pravila učenja u predviđanju prodaje za industriju namještaja]

Yucesan, Melih; Gul, Muhammet; Celik, Erkan

Most organizations in manufacturing environments aim to increase their profits and reduce costs against competitive and rapidly changing market conditions. Accuracy of sales forecasting is undoubtedly a successful way to reach the aforementioned goals. At the same time, this enables executives to improve customer satisfaction, reduce lost sales and plan production efficiently. As a growing industry in Turkey, furniture manufacturing has an increased product demand in relation to the recent growth in construction and related industries, increase in urban population and increase in person-level income. Therefore, accurate sales forecasting systems in this industry are more focused on the special and calendar factors, such as consumer confidence index, producer price index, time of the year and number of vacation days. In this paper, an artificial neural network (ANN) based forecasting model is proposed by using MATLAB for processing total monthly sales data of a corporate furniture manufacturer located in the Black Sea region of Turkey. The method is a component of ANN, namely Bayesian regularization. The proposed model is applied to monthly sales figures of a corporate furniture manufacturing company. In conclusion, the results of performance measures show that using the ANN model based on Bayesian rules training is an applicable choice for forecasting of monthly sales of the observed furniture factory.

Change of mechanical properties of powder recyclate reinforced polyolefin based on gamma radiation

    Kismet, Yilmaz

In this study, the changes observed in the mechanical properties of standard test specimens that were produced with powder coating reinforced polyolefin (polyethylene and polypropylene) due to gamma radiation were examined. Matrix material of these specimens included low density polyethylene and polypropylene and 5%, 10%, 20%, 30%, 40% and 50% electrostatic powder coating waste by weight, and the samples were exposed to 44 kGry gamma-radiation for twenty four hours. Mechanical tests applied to the specimens after radiation demonstrated that the physical bonding mechanism between matrix material and filler material was reinforced. In the mechanical tests, tensile strength, three-point bending strength, and Izod impact strength of the samples were investigated and the results were compared to the results obtained in the mechanical tests when they were not radiated. Thus, the effects of gamma radiation on the mechanical properties of the filler material, and the electrostatic powder coating reinforced polyethylene and polypropylene were determined. Furthermore, section images of the radiated samples were taken with a scanning electron microscope and compared to the section images of irradiated samples to observe the physical bonding mechanism.

A novel overlapped nuclei splitting algorithm for histopathological images

Serin, Faruk; Erturkler, Metin; Gul, Mehmet

Background and objective Nuclei segmentation is a common process for quantitative analysis of histopathological images. However, this process generally results in overlapping of nuclei due to the nature of images, the sample preparation and staining, and image acquisition processes as well as insufficiency of 2D histopathological images to represent 3D characteristics of tissues. We present a novel algorithm to split overlapped nuclei. Methods The histopathological images are initially segmented by K-Means segmentation algorithm. Then, nuclei cluster are converted to binary image. The overlapping is detected by applying threshold area value to nuclei in the binary image. The splitting algorithm is applied to the overlapped nuclei. In first stage of splitting, circles are drawn on overlapped nuclei. The radius of the circles is calculated by using circle area formula, and each pixel's coordinates of overlapped nuclei are selected as center coordinates for each circle. The pixels in the circle that contains maximum number of intersected pixels in both the circle and the overlapped nuclei are removed from the overlapped nuclei, and the filled circle labeled as a nucleus. Results The algorithm has been tested on histopathological images of healthy and damaged kidney tissues and compared with the results provided by an expert and three related studies. The results demonstrated that the proposed splitting algorithm can segment the overlapping nuclei with accuracy of 84%. Conclusions The study presents a novel algorithm splitting the overlapped nuclei in histopathological images and provides more accurate cell counting in histopathological analysis. Furthermore, the proposed splitting algorithm has the potential to be used in different fields to split any overlapped circular patterns.

Investigation of blood antioxidant enzyme levels and glutathione peroxidase, catalase, and superoxide dismutase gene polymorphism in sheep with fluorosis

Ozbey, Ulku; Deger, Yeter; Yur, Fatmagul; Çambay, Zafer; Ozbeye, Gokben

Reactive oxygen species have been considered to play a significant part in the development of fluorosis, a critical public health issue in many parts of the world. OBJECTIVES: The aims of this study, conducted on two groups of sheep, with and without fluorosis, was (i) to determine the effect of fluorosis on antioxidant enzymes, such as superoxide dismutase (SOD), glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px), catalase (CAT), and on malondialdehyde (MDA); and (ii) to investigate the relationship between the SOD, CAT, and GSH-Px genotypes and the antioxidant enzyme levels. METHODS: The two groups of sheep were: (i) 24 Akkaraman sheep with fluorosis living in Dogubeyazit province of Agri and (ii) 20 Akkaraman sheep with no signs of fluorosis living in Van. The MDA level and the antioxidant enzyme activities were identified spectrophometrically. The genotype characteristics were determined by the PCR-RFLP method using DNA extracted from blood. RESULTS: Compared to the control sheep without fluorosis, we found in the fluorotic sheep: (i) an increase in plasma MDA levels and GSH-Px-1 activity (p<0.05), and (ii) a decrease in SOD and CAT activities (p<0.01). There were significant differences found in the genotype and allele frequencies in both groups (p<0.01). CONCLUSIONS: Fluoride-induced oxidative stress affected the membrane structure resulting in elevated erythrocyte MDA levels and reduced enzyme activity of the enzymes SOD and CAT. According to our data, the gene polymorphisms show a tendency towards fluorosis for our local sheep population.

Optimizing electrocoagulation process using experimental design for COD removal from unsanitary landfill leachate

    Ogedey, Aysenur; Tanyol, Mehtap

Leachate is the most difficult wastewater to be treated due to its complex content and high pollution release. For this reason, since it is not possible to be treated with a single process, a pre-treatment is needed. In the present study, a batch electrocoagulation reactor containing aluminum and iron electrodes was used to reduce chemical oxygen demand (COD) from landfill leachate (Tunceli, Turkey). Optimization of COD elimination was carried out with response surface methodology to describe the interaction effect of four main process independent parameters (current density, inter-electrode distance, pH and time of electrolysis). The optimum current density, inter-electrode distance, pH and time of electrolysis for maximum COD removal (43%) were found to be 19.42 mA/m2, 0.96 cm, 7.23 and 67.64 min, respectively. The results shown that the electrocoagulation process can be used as a pre-treatment step for leachate.

Apoptotic effects of artificial feed supplemented with Thymus vulgaris on Oncorhynchus mykiss against Yersinia ruckeri

    Kucukgul, Altuğ; Kucukgul, Azime

Chemical composition of the essential oil was analyzed by GC-MS, and found to contain the phenol (40.95 %) as major component. Results showed that Y. ruckeri (3 × 107cfu fish-1) infection caused the characteristic symptoms on rainbow trout (petechial hemorrhages on the surface of body and liver). Y. ruckeriinducedinhibitions of Cas-3, Cas-8, p53 and HSP-70. After the administration of thyme essential oil (10 mg kg-1 diet) to infected fish tissues, Cas-3, Cas-8, p53 and HSP-70 mRNAs were up-regulated by 9.31, 9.18, 9.58, and 6,1 fold change, respectively. According to the results of the study, the inhibitions seen all analyzed genes were due to Y. ruckeri infection. However, they were entirely increased by thyme treatment. Thus, targeting pro-apoptotic proteases by agents such as T. vulgaris could improve therapeutic options for infectious disease in fish.

Investigation of optimum conditions for efficient COD reduction in synthetic sulfamethazine solutions by Pleurotus eryngii var. ferulae using response surface methodology

Yonten, Vahap; Alp, Hevidar; Yildirim, Numan; Yildirim, Nuran Cikcikoglu; Ogedey, Aysenur

This study aims to explore the optimum conditions for P. eryngii var. ferulae in adsorption of sulfamethazine (SM) from synthetic solutions via reduction of chemical oxygen demand (COD). The optimum conditions were optimized using the response surface methodology (RSM) developed by the application of the quadratic model associated with the central composite design. For this aim, RSM was employed to determine the effects of some parameters on this adsorption process by fungal biomass as an effective and available adsorbent. The investigated parameters were initial concentration of sulfamethazine (70–235 mg L−1), solution pH (3–7), adsorbent dosage (0.3–1.5 g), and contact time (5–25 min). The significant factors on each experimental design response were identified from the analysis of variance. The results of RSM analyzes revealed that optimum conditions of initial SM concentration, pH, adsorbent dosage, and contact time for maximum COD removal (82%) were achieved as 400 mg L−1, 11, 1.46 g, and 15.4 min, respectively. The results showed that dead biomass of P. eryngii var. ferulae were an appropriate adsorbent for the removal of COD in the SM medium from synthetic solutions.

Second law of gravitational thermodynamics in the locally rotationally symmetric Bianchi type-II universe

    Korunur, Murat

In this work, under the assumption that the universe is locally rotationally symmetric (LRS) Bianchi type-II and filled with anisotropic dark uid (dark energy and dark radiation), we investigate whether the generalized second law of thermodynamics (GSLT) is still valid. We also consider another important condition for LRS Bianchi type-II spacetimes whereby the model expansion is proportional to the shear, which leads to B = An (where n is a constant and A and B are the metric potentials). Based on this, we derive a general circumstance for the GSLT and find that its validity depends on the anisotropies of both the dark uid and the metric potentials. We conclude that the GSLT still holds at all times even if these two anisotropic conditions are removed from the results.

Monitoring the ethalfluralin biodegradation with certain bactofungi mixed culture

    Ergüven, Gökhan Önder

In this study, the biodegradation of ethalfluralin (C13H14F3N3O4), which is the most preferred herbicide in sunflower farming in Thrace region in Turkey, is investigated. Bacteria and fungi were isolated in soil samples obtained in Thrace region, and a mixed culture was prepared using equal volume of microorganism cultures. Five different apparatuses, including sterile agricultural soil were setup and ethalfluralin in 1,500 µg/L concentration was added to each apparatus, and they were watered for 6 weeks with sterilized tap water. Drained water was then collected, and the filtrates were measured for chemical oxygen demand (COD), biochemical oxygen demand (BOD5), total organic carbon (TOC) and ethalfluralin. Furthermore, pH and dissolved oxygen (DO) concentration were measured. Study results demonstrated that the highest biodegradation was observed in the soil sample that contained 10 mL mixed microorganism culture and ethalfluralin. In this filtrate, ethalfluralin, COD, BOD5 and TOC removals were measured as 92%, 85%, 82% and 97% respectively. The DO level remained between 3.00 and 4.50 mg/L in the first 3 weeks for all cultures. After the third week, it increased to 5.8 mg/L in the 5 mL culture mixture and to 7.1 mg/L in the 2 mL culture mixture. pH results demonstrated, an increase during the first 3 weeks and pH values decreased for all culture mixture media due to the formation of carbonic acid.
