Geochemical, isotopic and U-Pb geochronological investigation of the late Cretaceous Karaçayır carbonatite (Sivas, Turkey): Insights into mantle sources within a post-collisional tectonic setting

Çimen, Okay; Ağrılı, Haşim; Kuebler, Corinne; Simonetti, Antonio; Corcoran, Loretta; Simonetti, Stefanie; Çolak, Turgut; İnal, Sedat; Dönmez, Cahit

The Karaçayır carbonatite is located within the northeastern edge of the Central Anatolian Crystalline Complex, and represents one of the significant rare earth element (REE) mineralizations in Turkey. The carbonatite intrudes the associated syenite as dikes and veins, and is mainly composed of medium- to coarse-grained calcite, and lesser amounts of apatite, mica, amphibole, pyroxene, and magnetite. This study reports new and combined geochemical, radiogenic (Sr, Pb), stable (O and C), and for the first time B and Nd isotopic ratios and in-situ U-Pb age data from the Karaçayır carbonatite. The carbonate separates from the Karaçayır carbonatite are characterized by high Ba (30 to 484 ppm), Sr (613 to 9106 ppm) and total rare earth element (TREE) concentrations (172 to 2892 ppm), which are consistent with geochemical signatures for mantle-derived carbonate melts. The combined δ18OV-SMOW (+10.7 to +19.0 ‰), δ13CV-PDB (−2.9 to +1.8 ‰) and δ11B (−13.9 to −2.9 ‰) data for a majority of the carbonate separates investigated here in contrast indicate that they are the result of open system behavior involving contamination by the country rock (marble), and/or sub-solidus, low temperature alteration. Based on the combined stable and radiogenic isotopic signatures for the least altered/contaminated samples, the carbonatite magma at Karaçayır most likely represents a low-degree partial melt of an isotopically heterogeneous (metasomatized) mantle source containing EM (enriched mantle)-like components and recycled crustal carbon; the latter finding is consistent with those recorded for young (<300 Ma old) carbonatites worldwide. A weighted mean 206Pb/238U age of 69.3 ± 1.7 Ma is obtained for apatite from the Karaçayır carbonatite, and indicates its emplacement within a post-collisional tectonic setting during the late Cretaceous.

Irreversibility analysis of Ellis hybrid nanofluid with surface catalyzed reaction and multiple slip effects on a horizontal porous stretching cylinder

Naveed Khan, Muhammad; Akkurt, Nevzat; Ameer Ahammad, N.; Ahmad, Shafiq; Amari, Abdelfattah; Eldin, Sayed M; Ali Pasha, Amjad

This paper presents the theoretical and computation irreversibility investigation of the Ellis hybrid nanofluid flow (CuO-Al2O3 nanoparticles) model using both homogeneous and heterogeneous responses toward the horizontal porous stretching cylinder. The Joule heating, thermal radiation, and heat generation/absorption are all factors that affect thermal energy transport, all of which are explored. On the surface of the cylinder, the slip boundary conditions are enforced. Keeping in mind that the nonlinear partial differential equations (PDEs) are converted into nonlinear ordinary differential equations (ODEs), these ODEs are constructed from the mathematical flow model with the aid of proper transformations. With the help of the bvp4c MATLAB built-in method, the nonlinear system equations are tacked numerically. Graphical results are used to discuss the numerical aspects of different parameters. By increasing the curvature parameter, entropy generation increases while fluid velocity decreases. Elasticity and magnetic fields thin boundary layers. Realistically, as liquid porosity increases, momentum boundary layer diminishes.

Investigation of the effect of aspect ratio in an enclosure filled with phase change materials and its effect on thermal management of lithium-ion batteries: Applicable for storing solar energy

    Akkurt, Nevzat

The numerical and transient behavior of a battery pack (BA-PK) consisting of three battery cells positioned within an air duct is investigated in this work. The BA-PK was connected to a solar system. The inside of the BA-PK is filled with phase change material. The air within the duct moved at a speed of 0.001–0.003 m/s around the BA-PK. The investigation was carried out by altering the dimensions of the BA-PK using COMSOL software. The finite element approach is used to solve the equations. The results of this research indicated that the battery temperature (Tbatt) drops gradually until the surrounding area is filled with molten PCM, but that once the PCM around the battery is entirely frozen, the Tbatt drops abruptly. The use of a larger BA-PK increases the temperature of the exhaust air out of the duct, but reduces the percentage of solid PCM. The Tbatt, as well as the maximum Tbatt and average TPCM within the compartment, are reduced by using a smaller BA-PK. In addition to increasing the quantity of solid PCM, increasing the speed lowers the temperatures of the batteries and PCM, as well as the temperature of the exhaust air.

Three-term formulation to describe infiltration in water-repellent soils

Yilmaz, Deniz; Di Prima, Simone; Stewart, Ryan D.; Abou Najm, Majdi R.; Fernandez-Moret, David; Latorre, Borja; Lassabatere, Laurent

Modeling infiltration in water-repellent soils is difficult, as the underlying processes remain poorly quantified. However, recent work has adapted the Beerkan Soil Transfer Parameter (BEST) algorithm to include an exponential correction term for characterizing these types of soils. The original BEST-WR (WR = Water Repellent) method used a two-term approximate expansion of the Haverkamp quasi-exact implicit model. However, the BEST-WR method can have considerable inaccuracy, particularly as the time of infiltration and the soil water repellency increase. Here, we extended the BEST-WR model by adapting a three-term approximation of the Haverkamp quasi-exact implicit model to water-repellent soils. We then tested the new method using analytical data. For highly water-repellent soils, the proposed method had better performance when estimating soil sorptivity (S) and soil saturated conductivity (Ks), with respective errors of less than 1.5 % and 8 %, compared to relative errors of more than 10 % and 30 % with the two-term BEST-WR method. We also tested both approaches with experimental data. The two methods provided similar estimates for hydraulic parameters, with linear correlations between methods of R2 = 0.84 for S and R2 = 0.88 for Ks. Initial infiltration was not well modeled by either the two-term or three-term model for 33 tests, thus revealing limitations in the applied exponential model that we used to account for soil repellency. Nonetheless, the proposed three-term expression provided better fits than the two-term model for most of the infiltration runs, meaning that this new approach is more robust when modeling infiltration processes in water-repellent soils.

Trace element and Sr-Nd-Hf-Pb isotopic constraints on the composition and evolution of eastern Anatolian sub-lithospheric mantle

Aktağ, Alican; Sayit, Kaan; Peters, Bradley J.; Furman, Tanya; Rickli, Jörg

Quaternary Elazığ mafic alkaline volcanism is part of the anorogenic volcanic system of the circum-Mediterranean region, and it provides crucial insights into the chemical nature of the mantle source domains beneath eastern Turkey. Elemental and isotope geochemistry reveals that these mafic lithologies are mainly free of crustal contamination, reflecting geochemical signatures inherited from partial melting of their mantle sources. The trace element and Sr-Nd-Hf-Pb isotope systematics of the most primitive members of this volcanism are consistent with a predominant contribution from a sub-lithospheric component which compositionally resembles component C, believed to be common to global OIBs and MORBs. However, the total range of the isotope data also requires the involvement of two additional mantle components into their genesis: a depleted asthenospheric component (DM) and an enriched component (EM-type) representing metasomatized lithospheric mantle. We propose that the recycled oceanic lithologies with C-like signatures are dispersed in the asthenospheric mantle beneath eastern Anatolia and have undergone mixing with the depleted mantle matrix. When considering these with the melting models, it appears that the garnet-facies partial melts of the C-DM mixture have experienced a small degree of interaction with the melts from an SCLM domain modified by slab-derived melts and/or fluids. The metasomatized SCLM domain may be intrinsic to the eastern Anatolian lithosphere or occur as pods embedded in the asthenosphere. The chemical characteristics of the Elazığ Volcanics may confirm the wide-range dispersal of the common component in the sub-lithospheric mantle beneath the region extending from western Europe to eastern Turkey. However, the common component resides beneath Anatolia appear to have distinct composition (i.e., Pb isotope systematics) than the ubiquitous component shared mostly by European intraplate volcanics (i.e., LVC/EAR).

A new mobile convolutional neural network-based approach for pixel-wise road surface crack detection

    Doğan, Gürkan; Ergen, Burhan

In recent years, the worldwide road network has grown rapidly and reached an enormous size. Parallel to this size of the road network, the imperfections on the road surfaces are just as large. This has led to a significant increase in road maintenance costs for traffic management departments. Researchers have proposed methods for automatic flaw detection using deep neural networks to reduce road maintenance costs. However, these methods are insufficient in terms of performance and lightness. In this study, a convolutional neural network-based approach is proposed, which provides more successful road surface crack detection and requires less lightweight compared to other studies. Since the performance of the proposed approach is higher and more lightweight, it can be used more effectively and efficiently in mobile systems.

Dietary exposure to acrylamide: A critical appraisal on the conversion of disregarded intermediates into acrylamide and possible reactions during digestion

Aktağ, Işıl Gürsul; Hamzalıoğlu, Aytül; Kocadağlı, Tolgahan; Gökmen, Vural

The amount of acrylamide in asparagine rich thermally processed foods has been broadly monitored over the past two decades. Acrylamide exposure can be estimated by using the concentration of acrylamide found in foods and alternatively, biomarkers of exposure are correlated. A better estimation of dietary acrylamide exposure is crucial for a proper food safety assessment, regulations, and public health research. This review addresses the importance of the presence of neglected Maillard reaction intermediates found in foods, that may convert into acrylamide during digestion and the fate of acrylamide in the gastrointestinal tract as a reactive compound. Therefore, it is questioned in this review whether acrylamide concentration in ingested foods is directly correlated with the dietary exposure to acrylamide.

An ethnoveterinary study on plants used for the treatment of livestock diseases in the province of Giresun (Turkey)

Güler, Osman; Polat, Rıdvan; Karaköse, Mustafa; Çakılcıoğlu, Uğur; Akbulut, Sefa

The lack of ethnoveterinary surveys in Turkey, results in losses in the veterinary phytopharmacology field. This is the first ethnoveterinary research in which statistical calculations about plants are done by informant consensus factor (ICF) method in the Blacksea Region of Turkey. To catalog, analyze, and disseminate the knowledge of plant use in ethnoveterinary practices in the province of Giresun (Turkey). Information was gathered through open and semi-structured interviews with local people, mainly elderly shepherds and farmers, in the Giresun province. The collected data was analyzed quantitatively using two indices, informant consensus factor (ICF). A total of 65 ethnoveterinary plants belonging to 38 families are used for the treatment of animal diseases. According to the local farmers, the most often mentioned species that used in the resarch area have high ethno-veterinary potential. Most of these plants are also used for some human conditions in the study area. There are large numbers of ethno-veterinary practices EVPs in southern Turkey with undocumented cumulative knowledge of the indigenous people. Unfortunately, some evidence of their slow disappearance has been found. The traditional knowledge in the treatment of livestock diseases of the Giresun districts needs further scientific evaluations by phytochemical and antimicrobial experimentation.

Carbon and water balance of an afforested shallow drained peatland in Iceland

Drainage of peatlands increases the depth of the oxic peat layer and can turn them into a carbon (C) source to the atmosphere. Afforestation of drained peatlands could help to reverse this process since the trees may enhance C sequestration. We followed the C and water dynamics of an afforested drained peatland in S-Iceland during a 2 year period, during which the Black Cottonwood (Populus balsamifera ssp. trichocarpa) plantation was 23–25 year old. Net ecosystem exchange (NEE) of carbon dioxide (CO2) was measured with the eddy covariance method and C pools of trees and ground vegetation were measured using the stock change method. Lateral losses of dissolved and particulated organic C (DOC, POC) were estimated from weekly water-runoff samples. Unexpectedly, the afforested drained peatland was a strong sink of carbon during the two years, with an average NEE value of 714 g C m−2 yr−1. Only 0.5% of the total NEE was lost through lateral DOC and POC transport, leaving 710 g C m−2 yr−1 as the total net ecosystem production (NEP). Ca. 91% of the observed NEP could be explained by the annual biomass increment of the Black Cottonwood trees and 1.3% by the ground vegetation. This means that the remaining 7.5% of the total NEP most likely accumulated in peat soil and litter, contributing to the soil C stocks. The dormant-season CO2 emissions were unexpectedly low, which was explained by a high groundwater level at this drained site outside the ca. 5 months of the active growing season. On average, 66% of the annual measured precipitation was estimated to have evaporated back to the atmosphere. This left 416 mm for potential runoff, which was somewhat lower value than the measured runoff (662 mm). These results indicate that during the age span of ca. 20–25 years, afforestation was a valid method to reverse the expected negative C-balance of this drained grassland pasture in Iceland. Although the site is currently a soil C sink, simulation studies with process models are needed to test whether such sites could remain C sinks when managed for forestry over several tree-stand rotations.

Using Ochrobactrum thiophenivorans and Sphingomonas melonis for bioremediation of Imidacloprid

    Erguven, Gokhan Onder; Demirci, Ulas

To solve the environmental problems of the pesticides, bioremediation methods are commonly useful for their environment friendly properties. These methods are more cheap, useful and have more advantages for remediate receiving environments In this study, imidacloprid which is one of the selective insecticide in all over the world is chosenfor bioremediation studies with two soil bacteria. The imidacloprid used in the Mediterranean climate for cotton, pistachios, tomatoes, peppers and eggplant cultivation. The bioremediation of this insecticide was investigated via the performance of O.thiophenivorans and S. melonis in agitated culture media. The agricultural soil used for the isolation of these two bacteria was taken from the cotton cultivated agricultural area in Adana province in Turkey. For this purpose, the isolated and enriched bacteria were added to the recommended insecticide concentrations, and the Imidacloprid active material, Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD), Biological Oxygen Demand (BOD5), Total Organic Carbon (TOC), pH and dissolved oxygen (DO) parameters were determined for two weeks on each day of the study. O. thiophenivorens and S. melonis bioremediate the Imidacloprid insecticide with high efficiency (over 90%). According to these results, it is understood that these bacteria can be preferred in the bioremediation of receiving environments that are contaminated with such pesticides and can be useful for scientists to handle the opposite effects of such persistent organic pollutants and COD, BOD5 and TOC parameters can easily give opinions about decreasing of pesticides like the active materials

Salvia species have been traditionally used to improve cognition and have been proved to be a potential natural treatment for Alzheimer's disease. Salvia fruticosa Mill. (Turkish sage or Greek sage) demonstrated to have anticholinergic effects in vitro. The aim of this study was to understand the mechanism underlying the neuroprotective effects of S. fruticosa infusion and its representative compound rosmarinic acid, which was detected by LC-DAD-ESI-MS/MS. The protective effects of the S. fruticosa infusion (SFINF) and its major substance rosmarinic acid (RA) on amyloid beta 1–42 -induced cytotoxicity on SH-SY5Y cells together with p-GSK-3β activation were investigated. Their in vitro inhibitory effects against glycogen synthase kinase 3β, β-secretase, and casein kinase 1δ enzymes were also evaluated. The results showed that treatment with the all tested concentrations, SFINF significantly decreased Aβ 1–42-induced cytotoxicity and exhibited promising in vitro glycogen synthase kinase 3β inhibitory activity below 10 µg/mL (IC50 6.52 ± 1.14 µg/mL), in addition to β-secretase inhibition (IC50 86 ± 2.9 µg/mL) and casein kinase 1δ inhibition (IC50 121.57 ± 4.00). The SFINF (100 µg/mL and 250 µg/mL) also activated the expression of p-GSK-3β in amyloid beta 1–42 treated SH-SY5Y cells. The outcomes of this study demonstrated that the S. fruticosa infusion possessed activity to prevent amyloid beta 1–42 -induced neurotoxicity and provided proof that its mechanism may involve regulation of p-GSK-3β protein.

BEST-WR: An adapted algorithm for the hydraulic characterization of hydrophilic and water-repellent soils

Di Prima, Simone; Stewart, Ryan D.; Abou Najm, Majdi R.; Ribeiro Roder, Ludmila; Giadrossich, Filippo; Campus, Sergio; Angulo-Jaramillo, Rafael; Yilmaz, Deniz; Roggero, Pier Paolo; Pirastru, Mario

Water-repellent soils usually experience water flow impedance during the early stage of a wetting process followed by progressive increase of infiltration rate. Current infiltration models are not formulated to describe this peculiar process. Similarly, simplified methods of soil hydraulic characterization (e.g., BEST) are not equipped to handle water-repellent soils. Here, we present an adaptation of the BEST method, named BEST-WR, for the hydraulic characterization of soils at any stage of water-repellency. We modified the Haverkamp explicit transient infiltration model, included in BEST for modeling infiltration data, by embedding a scaling factor describing the rate of attenuation of infiltration rate due to water repellency. The new model was validated using analytically generated data, involving soils with different texture and a dataset that included data from 60 single-ring infiltration tests. The scaling factor was used as a new index to assess soil water repellency in a Mediterranean wooded grassland, where the scattered evergreen oak trees induced more noticeable water repellency under the canopies as compared to the open spaces. The new index produced results in line with those obtained using the water drop penetration time test, which is one of the most widely test applied for quantifying soil water repellency persistence. Finally, we used BEST-WR to determine the hydraulic characteristic curves under both hydrophilic and hydrophobic conditions.

The authors regret that the total evapotranspiration shown in Fig. 7 (821 mm) was the measured H2O flux for the whole two year measurement period. The correct average value for the two years was 411 mm yr−1, or 33% of the measured annual average precipitation. This left 827 mm yr−1 as the “estimated runoff” (see corrected figure). The sign of the average NEE values in the Abstract and Conclusions should be negative. All other information is correct, including the equations and interpretations. The authors would like to apologise for any inconvenience this has caused. [Figure presented]

Sequential infiltration analysis of infiltration curves measured with disc infiltrometer in layered soils

    Moret-Fernández, D.; Latorre, B.; Lassabatere, L.; Di Prima, S.; Castellini, M.; Yilmaz, D.; Angulo-Jaramilo, R.

The soil sorptivity, S, and saturated hydraulic conductivity, Ks, can be estimated from the inverse analysis of a cumulative infiltration curve using the quasi-exact implicit (QEI) formulation or its corresponding 4-Terms (4T) approximation. Although these models consider the soil as homogeneous media, there is no information about how heterogeneous profiles can affect the inferred soil properties. This work analyzes the influence of layered soils on Ks and S estimates using QEI and 4T models, and designs a new procedure for treating infiltration curves measured on layered soil profiles. The Sequential Infiltration Analysis (SIA) method considers a sequence of increasing time series from the cumulative infiltration data to estimate Ks and S, and its corresponding RMSE as a function of the number of samples used. A procedure to estimate the thickness of the upper uniform soil layer from the estimated wetting front advance (WFA) is also reported. The SIA method was applied on: (i) synthetic homogeneous profiles of loam soil and six layered profiles involving a 1, 2 and 3 cm thickness loam layer over silty or sandy loam soils, respectively, (ii) stratified laboratory soil columns, and (iii) 20 experimental infiltrations performed in a semiarid region of North-Eastern Spain. Similar results were found between QEI and 4T models for all cases. Erroneous estimates of Ks and S were observed when the total infiltration time series was considered for the analysis, regardless of the presence of soil layering. In opposite, estimates improved when the SIA method was applied to the layered systems. The SIA method exploits the fact that the RMSE increases when the wetting front reaches the interface between the soil layers. Such increase allows: (i) detection of the soil heterogeneity, (ii) determination of the infiltration time, to, required for the wetting front to reach the lower layer, and, (iii) accurate estimates of the upper layer Ks and S along with its thickness. Laboratory experiments on layered soils and field measurements demonstrated that the SIA method could be satisfactorily applied on different curves with contrasting shapes and magnitudes. Although soil layering encountered on most field samplings restricted the treatment of the observed infiltrations to short-medium times, the SIA method allowed robust estimates of Ks and S. These results indicate that the proposed method is a promising tool for characterizing the hydraulic properties of layered and heterogeneous soil profiles.

Hazard identification, risk assessment and control for dam construction safety using an integrated BWM and MARCOS approach under interval type-2 fuzzy sets environment

    Celik, Erkan; Gul, Muhammet

Undoubtedly, dams are one of the projects developed by people to make optimal water use and generate hydroelectric energy power. In addition to the importance of detailed project planning, faultless production, and optimal working conditions in dam constructions, it is equally important to identify and analyze the risks from the occupational health and safety (OHS) perspective that may arise during construction and operation. In this context, hazard identification, risk analysis, and control, which are the main issues of dam safety, have gained importance. In this study, a novel approach is developed for dam construction safety. Two newly proposed multi-criteria decision-making (MCDM) methods of “Best-Worst Method-BWM” and “measurement of alternatives and ranking to Compromise solution-MARCOS”, are merged under the context of interval type-2 fuzzy sets (IT2FSs). Severity and probability, two essential parameters of the risk score, have been weighted using BWM. Subsequently, the priority orders of hazards have been determined by the MARCOS. In implementing the approach to the blasting process in dam construction, several control measures are suggested for stakeholders. Some comparative works and sensitivity analyses are performed to test the approach's validity and solidity from the methodological viewpoint.

In this study, the novel azo dye FeII, CoII, ZnII, and RuII complexes with an azo dye ligand (L: (E)-4-((4-methoxyphenyl)diazenyl)-3-methyl-1H-pyrazol-5-amine) were synthesized. The structures of the complexes were characterized by FT-IR, elemental analysis, UV-Vis, mass spectra (FeII and CoII), NMR spectra (only diamagnetic ZnII and RuII), thermogravimetric and differential thermal analysis (TGA-DTA). All of the newly synthesized compounds were tested for their biochemical properties, including enzyme inhibitory and antioxidant activities. According to the in vitro ABTS, DPPH, CUPRAC, and FRAP antioxidant methods, the ligand and its metal complexes showed close antioxidant activities to the standards (BHA, BHT, ascorbic acid, and α-tocopherol). Enzyme inhibitions of the metal complexes were investigated against glutathione S-transferase (GST), acetylcholinesterase (AChE), and butyrylcholinesterase (BChE) enzymes. The best inhibition values (Ki) were observed for Ru(II) complex against GST (14.36 ± 2.16 µM), AChE (16.86 ± 2.74 µM), and BChE (14.12 ± 2.04 µM).

Electrogravimetric analysis of poly(aniline-co-o-toluidine) copolymer films in the presence of fluoride ions

Unal, Asuman; Robert Hillman, A.; Ryder, Karl S.; Cihangir, Salih

Polyaniline itself can be converted to its conductive form from its insulating form by applying an oxidising potential in which polyaniline is converted to its positive charge state. Anions in the target solution are driven into the positively charged polymer film by electrostatic force, and this process is reversed when a reduction potential is applied. Consequently, interfacial processes of polyaniline modified electrode make it viable to remove undesirable ions from the target solution. During this process, polyaniline operates as an ion-exchanger by directing specific ions at definite potentials, which is the principle of the electrochemically switched ion-exchange technique. Therefore, polyaniline can be employed as a convenient material to perform as a new ion-exchanger modified film in an acidic environment. On the other hand, an abrupt decrease in the electroactivity of polyaniline at elevated pH values restricts its use in such practical applications. To overcome this problem, copolymerization of aniline and o-toluidine is expedient as it will be able to enhance the electrochemical properties of polyaniline. Hence, several copolymers were synthesised in the presence of different aniline and o-toluidine feedstock ratios. It was found that the surface coverage value of a representative poly(aniline-co-o-toluidine) copolymer film was 139.7 nmol cm−2 compared with 76 nmol cm−2 for pure Pani under identical conditions. In addition, the redox cycling in monomer-free NaF solutions showed that the poly(aniline-co-o-toluidine) film exhibited excellent reversibility between redox reactions at pH 6.60. These outcomes clearly illustrate the contribution of o-toluidine to the electrochemical properties of polyaniline at raised pH medium.
