    Kurnaz Yetim, N.; Aslan, N.; Özcan, C.; Koç, M.M.

Heavy metal ions threaten public health and marine life; thus, removal of heavy metals is essential for the environment. Bi2S3 nanostructures are active materials which used in various applications. In this work, we produced Bi2S3 nanoflowers using hydrothermal synthesis and assessed their Cd2+ ions removal capability. Structural properties of the Bi2S3 nanoflowers were assessed by various like scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction. Chemical characteristics of the materials were confirmed using energy dispersive X-ray spectra. Different parameters affecting the Cd2+ ion recovery was worked some of which are adsorbent amount, Cd2+ ion concentration, pH, adsorbent time, eluent type and amount, etc. For cadmium, the optimum pH was determined 8.0 for 1 M HNO3 eluent. Optimum adsorbent amount was determined as 150 mg while optimum recovery duration was found as 30 min. Bi2S3 nanoparticles managed to achieve 99.3% Cd2+ recovery rate in 5 mL eluent volume, for optimum condition. The adsorption capacity of the Bi2S3 nanoflowers was found to be promising and therefore, it was illustrated that Bi2S3 nanoflowers are good candidates as sorbent for water remediation applications.

    Acar, Ramazan; Saplioglu, Kemal

Characterization and dye adsorption effectiveness of activated carbon synthesized from olive pomace

Deniz, Fatma; Başgöz, Öyküm; Güler, Ömer; Mazmanci, Mehmet Ali

Studies, about products obtained from agricultural wastes, have increased within the scope of zero waste studies. The olive pomace is produced as a result of olive oil production. In the present study, activated carbon was synthesized using the olive pomace taken from the olive pomace processing plant operating with a three-phase process. The synthesized activated carbon characterization was performed using Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM), Fourier-Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FT-IR), Brunauer – Emmett – Teller (BET), and X-Ray Crystallography (XRD) devices. Olive pomace activated carbon (OPAC) was used for the adsorption of dye from an aqueous solution. The adsorption efficiency of the OPAC was investigated. The initial pH value of dye solution (6–9), the amount of activated carbon (0.5 and 1.0 g/L), and initial dye concentration (600–1200 mg/L) were optimized. Also, adsorption kinetic and isotherm calculations were evaluated. The optimum parameters were found as the original pH value (pH=8) of dye solutions, OPAC amount of 1.0 g/L and the initial concentration of 1000 mg/L. The Langmuir isotherm model and the pseudo-second-order kinetic model were found as the most suitable models. It can be said that the synthesized material can be used at dye removing from wastewater.

Korkmaz, Volkan; Erguven, Gokhan Onder; Tanyol, Mehtap; Alatas, Mevlut; Yildirim, Numan

This study is the first report that aims to optimize the removal of Remazol Brilliant Violet 5R (RBV 5R) and Brilliant Green (BG) from synthetic solutions using Hypnum cupressiforme samples from Abant Mountains of Bolu (Turkey) as biosorbent and to conduct toxicity evaluation studies of treated wastewater using Daphnia magna. Optimization was performed using central composite design under response surface methodology with the operational factors of dye concentration, H. cupressiforme dose, and process time. The optimal conditions for dye concentration, H. cupres-siforme dose, and process time obtained by the numerical analysis were 19.02 mg/L, 0.18 g/50 mL and 110.59 min for RBV 5R, while these values were 18.57 mg/L, 0.18 g/50 mL and 99.45 min for BG, respectively. At the optimum values, maximum RBV 5R and BG removal were achieved as 99.39% and 99.22%, respectively. The D. magna mortality rates showed that treatment with adsorption were sufficient to remove the complete toxicity of dyes especially for RBV 5R.

The role of cross-sectional geometry of high-head gated conduit in oxygen transfer efficiency

Baylar, Ahmet; Ozkan, Fahri; Yildirim, Ceren Beyza; Aydin, Alp Bugra; Tuna, Muhammed Cihat; Ozturk, Mualla

The concentration of dissolved oxygen is an important indicator of water quality because aquatic life lives on the dissolved oxygen in the water. This can be achieved by using hydraulic structures because of substantial air bubble entrainment at these structures. Closed conduit aeration is a particular instance of this. In the present study, experiments were carried out to investigate the role of cross-sectional geometry of high-head gated conduit in oxygen transfer efficiency. In the first part of this study, the role of cross-sectional geometry of high-head gated conduit in air-demand ratio was investigated. In the second part, the role of cross-sectional geometry of high-head gated conduit in oxygen transfer efficiency was investigated. Results pointed that the cross-sectional geometry of the high-head gated conduit had an important effect on the air-demand ratio and the oxygen transfer efficiency. Moreover, a design formula was obtained for the conduit having the highest oxygen transfer efficiency relating the oxygen transfer efficiency to air-demand ratio, Froude number, gate opening, conduit length and gate opening ratio. There was good agreement between the measured and the predicted values. The obtained results will be useful in future modelling processes and aid the practicing engineer in predicting oxygen transfer efficiency of high-head gated conduits.

Adsorptive removal of nickel ions from wastewater by synthesized a novel biocomposite material and process optimization by response surface methodology

Ince, Muharrem; Ince, Olcay Kaplan; Alp, Hevidar

In the present study, a fixed-bed column study was performed using a novel biocomposite mate-rial, Amanita vaginata immobilized on Amberlite XAD-4 resin, to find out the adsorption behavior of nickel (Ni2+) ions from industrial wastewater. The influence of some important operating conditions including pH (3–7), biocomposite material amount (150–250 mg (XAD-4:Amanita vaginata, 5:1)) influent flow rate (4–8 mL min–1) besides Ni2+ ions initial concentration (20–40 mg L–1) on the uptake of Ni2+ solution were also optimized using a synthetic water solution. A central composite design combined with response surface methodology was utilized to maximize Ni2+ ions removal using A. vaginata immobilized on Amberlite XAD-4 resin as a biocomposite material in a column biosorption process. A mathematical model was derived from the central composite design approach for predicting responses and analysis of variance. Also, for checking model adequacy a lack of fit test was carried out. It was determined that the checked and proposed quadratic model was derived from the experimental design data. The biocomposite material adsorption capacity was calculated as 6.28 mg g–1. A high coefficient of determination (R2 = 0.9887) was presented by analysis of variance. Results confirmed that the amount of adsorbed Ni2+ amount did not change with the increase of the flow rate ratio and dose when the initial concentration of Ni2+ ions increased. The maximum adsorp-tion capacity of biocomposite material was achieved at 6.9 pH, 150.1 mg of biocomposite material amount, 7.8 mL min–1 of solution flow rate, and 39.7 mg L–1 of Ni2+ ions initial concentration. Finally, the developed method was applied to industrial wastewater to determine Ni2+ ions concentrations.

The use of Phanerochaete chrysosporium as an alternative bioremedia-tion tool of heavy metal, chemical oxygen demand and phosphate from landfill leachate

Yildirim, Numan; Kardas, Elif; Ince, Muharrem

In this study, in order to investigate the bioremediation efficiency of Phanerochaete chrysosporium, chemical oxygen demand (COD) reduction, total phosphate levels and heavy metal (Fe2+, Mn2+, Zn2+ and Cu2+) removal were determined in five different experimental groups (control, X, Y, Z, and T) under static culture conditions containing leachate at different incubation periods (5, 10, and 20 d). At the end of the 20th day of incubation, 84% Mn2+ and Zn2+ removal was achieved in X application group. In the same application group, 90.88% COD reduction was also obtained. The lowest total phosphate value was determined as 2.63 g L–1 in T group compared with control group (5.0 g L–1). Similar improvements have been identified in other application groups in terms of metal removal, total phosphate levels and COD reduction. As a result, the findings obtained from our study show that white rot fungus P. chrysosporium can be used as an alternative biological resource in the studies for improving landfill leachate in terms of metal removal efficacy, COD and total phosphate level reduction capacity.

Fe3O4 nanoparticle decorated novel magnetic metal oxide microcomposites for the catalytic degradation of 4-nitrophenol for wastewater cleaning applications

Hasanoğlu Özkan, Elvan; Aslan, Naim; Koç, Mümin Mehmet; Kurnaz Yetim, Nurdan; Sarı, Nurşen

Co3O4, NiO and ZnO microparticles were decorated with Fe3O4 nanoparticles where novel Co3O4@Fe3O4, NiO@Fe3O4 and ZnO@Fe3O4 microcomposites were obtained with significant magnetic properties. Decorating microparticles with Fe3O4 nanoparticles helped us to obtain microcomposites with outstanding magnetic characteristics, since Fe3O4 nanoparticles were decorated on the upper shell of the microstructures where the magnetic characteristics of the composites were not suppressed, and good catalytic performance was obtained. SEM was used to assess the physical morphology of the microparticles which indicate that microparticles were in flower or ball-like shape. Magnetic properties were checked using VSM which revealed that magnetic composites are in ferromagnetic characteristics. Optic characteristics of the particles were checked by UV–Vis spectrometry to assess bandgap energies which indicate that doping microparticles with Fe3O4 slightly alters the bandgap energies of microparticles. The catalytic role of microparticles and microcomposites for the catalytic reduction of 4-nitrophenol to 4-aminophenol was studied.

Age- and Sex-Specific Bioaccumulation of Selected Metals in Freshwater Mussel (Unio elangatulus eucirrus Bourguignat, 1860) Populating from Keban Dam Lake (Elazig, Turkey)

Danabaş, Durali; Kutluyer, Filiz; Ural, Mesut; Özçelik, Mehtap; Kocabaş, Mehmet

In aquatic life, environmental chemicals are accumulated by mussels due to their sentinel nature and filter-feeding characteristics. Herein, the present study focused on assessing the concentrations of Cu, Zn, Mg, Mn, Fe, Cd, Pb, Ca, K, and Na levels in freshwater mussels (Unio elangatulus eucirrus) depending on sex and age. For all trace metals, some important differences of bioaccumulations were determined depending on ages and sex. In details, the results indicated that an important age-related accumulation of Mg, Cd, Ca, and K was in females and all trace elements, except Cu, Mg, and K levels in males (p < 0.05). No statistical differences were determined in mean concentrations of Cu, Zn, Mg, and Na. There are statistical differences in Mg, Mn, Fe, and Ca levels between females and males in four aged mussels (p < 0.05). Lead levels were under detectable limits. Overall, metal levels and their toxicity in freshwater mussels should be closely monitored for health of the environment, animals, and humans, since mussels and fish species fed on them are consumed highly in the research region and around.

Integration of electron beam technology into fresh produce wash water line: Effect of inoculum suspension medium and water quality parameters on the radioresistance of Salmonella Typhimurium ATCC 13311

Omac, Basri; Moreira, Rosana G.; Castell-Perez, Elena

Electron beam technology may be integrated into the fresh produce wash water line, as an advanced oxidation process (AOP). However, prior to implementation, effectiveness of the technology must be assessed. Hydroxyl radical scavengers were used to quantify the role of yield of hydroxyl radicals in inactivation of the selected pathogen in aqueous solution. The combined lethal effect of e-beam treatment with aqueous hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) solution was also investigated. The radioresistance of Salmonella Typhimurium ATCC 13311 in deionized (DI) water, that is radiation D10 values, increased (p <.05) from 0.15 ± 0.00 kGy to 0.18 ± 0.00 kGy and to 0.19 ± 0.06 kGy when peptone water (PW) and phosphate buffered saline (PBS) was dissolved into DI water, respectively. Membrane-permeable ethanol provided better protection for this pathogen than nonpermeable PEG. Results suggest that to minimize the protective effects of inoculating suspending media used for the preparation of Salmonella suspension, 1.0 mM phosphate buffer (PB) should be used in microbial studies of irradiated foods. Nitrate and dissolved organic carbon (DOC) reacting with hydrated electrons (eaq−) and hydroxyl radicals (·OH), respectively, induced more sequestering of ·OH. E-beam treatment with 0.60 kGy dose in aqueous solution with H2O2 led to a reduction of 6.44 ± 0.03 log CFU/mL f S. Typhimurium ATCC 13311.

Floating solar stills and floating solar-driven membranes: Recent advances and overview of designs, performance and modern combinations

Rashid, Farhan Lafta; Al-Obaidi, Mudhar A.; Hussein, Ahmed Kadhim; Akkurt, Nevzat; Ali, Bagh; Younis, Obai

For life to exist on earth, there must be water. Freshwater resources are in short supply due to industrialization and the world's rapid population expansion. Growing water shortage argues that using passive solar stills is the best and most practical solution in the world's arid and semi-arid regions. For applications in distant or rural coastal areas, floating solar stills are an appropriate technique. To provide accessibility to a wider population, the gadget should be constructed using inexpensive materials that are easily accessible nearby. However, the low-cost materials typically do not have the optimum physical characteristics, which reduces the overall performance of solar stills. This study intends to deliver a comprehensive review that summarizes recent research developments and gives a rundown of experimental, numerical, and experimental and numerical studies on floating solar stills and floating solar-driven membranes. This article also looks at a few more setups, researched parameters, and result-finding issues. Research on floating solar is currently ongoing, and recommendations for further research projects have been made in light of the study's findings.

Green Synthesis (Paeonia kesrouanensis) of Silver Nanoparticles and Toxicity Studies in Artemia salina

Unal, İlkay; Egri, Sinan; Ates, Mehmet

This study aims to describe a simple and environmentally friendly procedure for producing silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) using Paeonia kesrouanensis (P. kesrouanensis) extracts and to determine the toxic effect in the aquatic environment. The morphologies, size, size distributions, and structural properties were analyzed using SEM-EDX, TEM, DLS, zeta potential, FTIR, and XRD. AgNPs were applied to Artemia salina (A.salina), aquatic organism individuals at 7 different concentrations (0.0, 0.2, 1, 5, 10, 25, 50 mg/L) for 24, 48, and 72 h. AgNPs accumulation and elimination, ion release amounts, and the survival rates of organisms were determined at periods of 24, 48, and 72nd hours. The highest accumulation was observed at the 24th hour at the 50 mg/L exposure level. The survival rate decreased as exposure time increased at all concentrations.

Chitosan-graft-poly(N‑tert‑butylacrylamide) Copolymer: Synthesis, Characterization and Optimization of Tetracycline Removal Using RSM

    Tanyol, Mehtap; Torğut, Gülben

In the present study, a graft copolymer was synthesized in accordance with the free radical method using N-tertiary butylacrylamide monomer on chitosan, which is an environmentally friendly polymer. The chemical structure and surface morphology of the newly synthesized graft copolymer were determined by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction. Moreover, the thermal behavior was analyzed by thermogravimetric analysis. The chitosan-graft-poly(N‑tert‑butylacrylamide) graft copolymer was used as an adsorbent for the rapid removal of tetracycline from aqueous solutions in order to investigate its applicability. Response surface methodology (RSM) was employed for the optimization of the study conditions, namely adsorbent dosage (0.01–0.04 g 100 mL−1), reaction time (10–90 min) and initial tetracycline concentration (10–100 mg 100 mL−1). The effects of these conditions on tetracycline uptake capacity were examined and the results were statistically analyzed. The RSM results showed that the maximum tetracycline uptake capacity of 104.81 mg g−1 was achieved under the following conditions: adsorbent dose of 0.03 mg 100 mL−1, reaction time of 51.12 min and initial tetracycline concentration of 97.99 mg L−1. ANOVA based on central composite design combined with RSM showed a good agreement between the experimental values and quadratic model estimates, thus resulting in a coefficient (R2) of 0.9118 for tetracycline uptake. The kinetics, isotherms, and thermodynamics of adsorption were examined, and results showed that equilibrium data fitted the Freundlich isotherm model, and the adsorption kinetics of tetracycline followed pseudo-second-order model. Thermodynamic parameters like the enthalpy − 10.39 kJ mol−1 (ΔH°), entropy 0.044 kJ mol−1 K−1 (ΔS°) and Gibbs free energy − 23.26 kJ mol−1 (ΔG°) were evaluated and also, ΔG° shows a negative values indicating that the adsorption process was exothermic and spontaneous. The findings demonstrated that the chitosan-graft-poly(N‑tert‑butylacrylamide) copolymer is an effective adsorbent for pharmaceutical wastewater treatment.
