Hardness removal from waters by using citric acid modified pine cone

Altundogan, Hamdi Soner; Topdemir, Aykut; Çakmak, Meltem; Bahar, Nurdan

In this study, an effective cation exchanger was developed from the pine cone by citric acid modification and its hardness removal properties from the waters were investigated. For this purpose, ground pine cone samples were subjected to a citric acid modification following NaOH saponification. Both of the raw (RPC) and modified pine cone (MPC) samples were subjected to standardized hardness removal tests by shaking with hard waters. These tests showed that citric acid modification significantly increases the cation exchange capacity of the pine cone. Most suitable size fraction of pine cone was determined as -16 + 30 mesh (600 mu m < x < 1200 mu m). Also, citric acid modified product obtained from this fraction was used in a continuous system to remove hardness from water. The results of this study showed that the MPC can be used for hardness removal from waters as a cheap, durable and environment -friendly material. Finally, regeneration experiments showed that the MPC can be used for hardness removal from water repeatedly by a simple HCl regeneration. (C) 2015 Taiwan Institute of Chemical Engineers. Toxicity of Engineered Nickel Oxide and Cobalt Oxide Nanoparticles to Artemia salina in Seawater

Ates, Mehmet; Demir, Veysel; Arslan, Zikri; Camas, Mustafa; Celik, Fatih

In this study, the effects of exposure to engineered nickel oxide (NiO 40-60 nm) and cobalt oxide (CoO < 100 nm) nanoparticles (NP) were investigated on Artemia salina. Aggregation and stability of the aqueous NP suspensions were characterized by DLS and TEM. Acute exposure was conducted on nauplii (larvae) in seawater in a concentration range from 0.2 to 50 mg/L NPs for 24 h (short term) and 96 h (long term). The hydrodynamic diameters of NiO and CoO NPs in exposure medium were larger than those estimated by TEM. Accumulation rate of NiO NPs were found to be four times higher than that of CoO NPs under the same experimental conditions. Examinations under phase contrast microscope showed that the nanoparticles accumulated in the intestine of Artemia, which increased with increasing exposure concentration. Differences were observed in the extent of dissolution of the NPs in the seawater. The CoO NPs dissolved significantly while NiO NPs were relatively more stable. Oxidative stress induced by the NP suspensions was measured by malondialdehyde assay. Suspensions of NiO NPs caused higher oxidative stress on nauplii than those of CoO NPs. The results imply that CoO and NiO NPs exhibit toxicity on Artemia (e. g., zooplankton) that is an important source of food in aquatic food chain.

    Algebraic topology of G2 manifolds

    Akbulut, Selman; Kalafat, Mustafa

In this paper we give a survey of various results about the topology of oriented Grassmannian bundles related to the exceptional Lie group G(2). Some of these results are new. We give self-contained proofs here. One often encounters these spaces when studying submanifolds of manifolds with calibrated geometries. For the sake of completeness we decided to collect them here in a self-contained way to be easily accessible for future usage in calibrated geometry. As an application we deduce existence of certain special 3 and 4 dimensional submanifolds of G(2) manifolds with special properties, which appear in the first named author's work with S. Salur about G(2) dualities. (C) 2015 Elsevier GmbH. All rights reserved.

Determination of anthocyanins in cherry and cranberry by high-performance liquid chromatography-electrospray ionization-mass spectrometry

    Karaaslan, Nagihan M.; Yaman, Mehmet

Anthocyanins are a group of widespread natural phenolic compounds in vegetables and fruits. The anthocyanins have a wide range of applications due to the antioxidant, anticancer and anti-inflammatory properties. In this study, anthocyanins (delphinidin-3-o-glucoside, cyanidin-3-o-glucoside, pelargonidin-3-o-glucoside and malvidin-3-o-glucoside) in cherry and cranberry were determined using high-performance liquid chromatography-electrospray ionization-mass spectrometry (HPLC-ESI-MS). The anthocyanins were separated using gradient elution and a reserved-phase analytical column before identification by high-performance liquid chromatography-electrospray ionization-mass spectrometry. A high-performance liquid chromatography-electrospray ionization-mass spectrometry method was optimized for the determination of anthocyanins in cherry and cranberry. Furthermore, in this study, we investigated extraction conditions of fruit samples as well as determination of optimum HPLC-ESI-MS conditions. This study is novel in terms of simultaneously examining both optimization of HPLC parameters and extraction conditions. Obtained optimum conditions were used for the determination as the quantitative and qualitative analysis of anthocyanins in cherry and cranberry. The content of anthocyanins on the basis of wet weight in cherry and cranberry samples was determined for delphinidin-3-o-glucoside < d.l. (detection limit) and < d.l., for cyanidin-3-o-glucoside varied from 3.5 +/- A 0.4 to 8.3 +/- A 1.1 mg kg(-1) (average 5.8 +/- A 0.8 mg kg(-1)) and 9.8 +/- A 1.4 to 18 +/- A 3.0 mg kg(-1) (average 13.2 +/- A 1.8 mg kg(-1)), for pelargonidin-3-o-glucoside < d.l. and varied from 136 +/- A 19 to 233 +/- A 35 mg kg(-1) (average 185.3 +/- A 28 mg kg(-1)), for malvidin-3-o-glucoside < d.l. and < d.l., respectively.

Önal, Yunus; Depci, Tolga; Önal, Ayten; Önal, Ali; Üner, Tijen

Asbestos is dangerous for health and is forbidden to use in Turkey, but villagers who live in rural eastern part still use it especially for their home for insulation purposes and even as a substitute for baby powder. Therefore, geological and chemical properties of this type of soil, which is near the settlement, should be characterized and identified from the point of view of health. Beypinari asbestos deposits are located at Beypinari village, about 90 km southeast of Sivas, Turkey within Central Anatolian Ophiolites. Therefore, in the present study, the existence of chrysotile in Beypinari asbestos deposit were characterized and identified by mineralogical analysis and by major, trace, REE analysis. The results show that the samples contain different amount of calcite mineral, the main mineral being chrysotile.

EFFECTS OF SALINITY, LIGHT AND NITROGEN CONCENTRATION ON GROWTH AND LIPID ACCUMULATION OF THE GREEN ALGAE DUNALIELLA BARDAWIL

Can, Safak Seyhaneyildiz; Cirik, Semra; Koru, Edis; Turan, Gamze; Tekogul, Hatice; Subakan, Tugba

Efficient biofuel production from algae depends on the microalgal biomass production rate and lipid content. Both biomass production and lipid accumulation are limited by several factors, of which nutrients play a key role. In this study, the marine microalgae Dunaliella bardawil was used as a model organism. D. bardawil was cultured at two different sodium nitrate concentrations as 0 and 0.7 M, at six different amounts of salinity as 0.65, 1.0, 1.5, 2.0, 2.75 and 3.5 M, and at two different light intensity levels as 65 and 800 mu mol foton m(-2) s(-1) The study was done under pH 7. After 15-day growth period, the most efficient culture of D. bardawil for both biomass increase and lipid production was determined for the samples with 39.67 +/- 4.51 lipid rates cultured under 0.7 M nitrate concentration, 2.75 M salinity and 800 mu mol photon m(-2) sn(-1) light intensity. This high level of lipid production is sufficient to use D. bardawil for biodiesel production. Also after the evaluation of fatty acid results of GC-FID analysis, it was determined that D. bardawil contains high rate of medium length (C16-C18) fatty acid chains suitable for the production of biodiesel. These results are satisfactory to use D. bardawil in biodiesel production.

Changes in the texture, physicochemical properties and volatile compound profiles of fresh Kashar cheese (<90 days) during ripening

Eroglu, Ali; Toker, Omer Said; Dogan, Mahmut

In this study, four different fresh Kashar cheese samples were ripened for 90 days. The physicochemical properties, texture attributes, fatty acid composition and volatile compound profiles of the samples were measured every 30 days of ripening. The texture properties of the cheese samples were significantly affected by the duration of the ripening period. The results of this study highlighted that texture parameters as a function of ripening period should be considered for both fresh and aged Kashar cheeses to determine the ripening period as they are very important for consumer acceptability and consumption of the end product.

Experimental and modeling studies of methylene blue adsorption onto particles of peanut shell

    Kiliç, Fatih; Sarici-Özdemir, Cigdem

In this study, adsorption of methylene blue from aqueous solution onto peanut shell has been investigated. Experimental data obtained from dye adsorption have been studied by five two-parameter (Langmuir, Freundlich, Dubinin-Radushkevich, Temkin, and Frumkin) and five three-parameter (Redlich-Peterson, Sips, Toth, Radke-Prausnitz, and Koble-Corrigan) isotherm models. Eight nonlinear error functions (sum squares errors, hybrid fractional error function, Marquardt's percent standard deviation, average relative error, sum of absolute error, the coefficient of determination, nonlinear chi-square test, and standard deviation of relative errors) were examined for isotherm equations. In order to explain the adsorption kinetics fit of pseudo-first-order, pseudo-second-order, Elovich, and intraparticle kinetic models were used. The best fitting isotherm model was the Radke-Prausnitz and kinetics model was pseudo-second-order. Adsorption experiment showed that the maximum capacity of agricultural waste for methylene blue was 67.57 L.g(-1) at 25 degrees C.

Theileria annulata is an apicomplexan parasite which is responsible for tropical theileriosis in cattle. Due to resistance of T. annulata against commonly used antitheilerial drug, new drug candidates should be identified urgently. Enolase might be a druggable protein candidate which has an important role in glycolysis, and could also be related to several cellular functions as a moonlight protein. In this study; we have described three-dimensional models of open and closed conformations of T. annulata enolase by homology modeling method for the first time with the comprehensive domain, active site and docking analyses. Our results show that the enolase has similar folding patterns within enolase superfamily with conserved catalytic loops and active site residues. We have described specific insertions, possible plasminogen binding sites, electrostatic potential surfaces and positively charged pockets as druggable regions in T. annulate enolase. Emergency department performance evaluation by an integrated simulation and interval type-2 fuzzy MCDM-based scenario analysis

Gul, Muhammet; Celik, Erkan; Gumus, Alev Taskin; Guneri, Ali Fuat

Emergency departments (EDs) have an important position in healthcare system environment because of their serviceability to the patients with several illnesses and injuries at all hours of the day and night. Therefore, efficient management of these departments by executives and service providers is only possible with effective tools such as simulation. The concept of multiple criteria decision-making (MCDM) is applicable by computer simulation for decision analysis and performance evaluation of an ED. This study proposes an integration of computer simulation, MCDM methods of interval type-2 fuzzy analytic hierarchy process (IT2FAHP), and ELECTRE for an ED system in a university hospital. Due to the high uncertainty in ED operations, interval type-2 fuzzy sets (IT2FSs) are used in MCDM process. Consequently, the integrated method can be used as a useful tool to evaluate the ED performance and select the best scenario considering different numbers of nurses and doctors for three shifts.

Effects of Milk Thistle (Silybum marianum) Seed Supplementation to High-Calorie Basal Diets of Quails on Egg Production, Egg Quality Traits, Hatchability and Oxidative Stress Parameters

Erisir, Zeki; Iflazoglu Mutlu, Seda; Simsek, Ulku Gulcihan; Çiftçi, Mehmet; Azman, Mehmet Ali; Benzer, Fulya; Erisir, Mine

The purpose of this study was to examine the changes to occur in egg production, egg quality traits, hatchability, and oxidative stress parameters of laying quails fed with high calorie diets and effect of milk thistle (Silybum marianum) seed on these changes. A total of 75 45-day-old quails including 60 females and 15 males were used in the study. The quails were divided into 5 groups with three repetitions. 4 females and 1 male were used in each repetition. The groups of the study were arranged as following; control group (C) consuming corn-soybean based basal diet, oil group (SFO) in which 5% sun flower oil was added into basal diet, oil + milk thistle group (SFO+MT) in which 5% sun flower oil + 1% milk thistle seed was added into basal diet, syrup group (CS) in which 10% corn syrup was added into basal diet, and syrup + milk thistle group (CS+MT) in which 10% corn syrup + 1% milk thistle was added into basal diet. Total egg production was found to be significantly higher in SFO and SFO+MT groups of present study (P<0.05). Feed intake, total egg weight and feed conversion were found similar among the groups (P>0.05). The differences among the groups in albumen rate, yolk rate, dried shell rate and shape index were not statistically significant (P>0.05). The best yolk colour was obtained in SFO+MT and CS groups (P<0.01). There were no statistically differences among the groups in hatchability, hatchability of fertile and embrionic mortality (P>0.05), but the difference in examined fertility were statistically significant (P<0.05). Malonyl dialdehyde (MDA) values of blood, liver and heart tissues were similar among the groups of study (P>0.05). MDA level of kidney significantly increased in CS group, however addition of milk thistle seed into diet was reduced MDA level of kidney in CS+MT group (P<0.01). High calorie diets caused changes in antioxidant system in blood and tissues. Consequently, high-calorie basal diets especially addition of SFO improved only egg production and fertility rate. However feeding quails with corn syrup had significantly higher lipid peroxidation in kidney. Supplementation of milk thistle seed into CS group may protect kidney against free radical damage.

An outranking approach based on interval type-2 fuzzy sets to evaluate preparedness and response ability of non-governmental humanitarian relief organizations

    Celik, Erkan; Gumus, Alev Taskin

After a disaster occurs, national and international non-governmental humanitarian relief organizations (NGOs), as well as the governmental humanitarian relief organizations (GOs), are involved in carrying out the humanitarian relief operations because of insufficiency in recourses such as lack of equipment and human resources. GOs and NGOs play a crucial role in preparedness and response to natural disasters, especially when available resources of them are not enough. The preparedness and response ability of GOs and NGOs aim to minimize the losses and number of affected people. Therefore, the preparedness and response ability of NGOs are becoming more important to support governmental relief activities. In this paper, a hybrid approach, that consists of interval type-2 fuzzy sets, AHP and PROMETHEE, is proposed to evaluate emergency preparedness and response ability performances of NGOs. The proposed hybrid approach is applied to NGOs in Turkey to evaluate their performances, and is conducted in three phases: (1) determination of critical success factors (CSFs) of humanitarian relief logistics management operations, (2) application of interval type-2 fuzzy AHP for obtaining importance weights of CSFs and (3) application of PROMETHEE based on interval type-2 fuzzy sets to evaluate preparedness and response abilities of NGOs. Application of interval type-2 fuzzy sets DEMATEL methods in maritime transportation: The case of ship collision

    Celik, E.; Akyuz, E.

Accident analyse in marine industry is one of the critical issues for safety practitioners to prevent loss of life. Although considerable efforts were undertaken to prevent marine accident, numerous researches revealed that marine accidents are still on-going. In order to minimize accidents in the marine transportation, this paper presents a proactive decisionmaking tool which is integrating Decision-Making Trail and Evaluation Laboratory (DEMATEL) method with interval type-2 fuzzy sets (IT2FSs). As the DEMATEL enables to analyse cause and effect relationship in decision-making, the IT2FSs overcome ambiguity and vagueness of linguistic assessment of decision-makers through the DEMATEL. Thus, significant accident causal factors and their effects can be analysed on the basis of cause-effect diagram. The application of proposed approach is demonstrated with a real ship collision case. Beside its theoretical contribution, the proposed approach provides practical benefits to ship owners and operators to perceive cause and effect relationship and to avoid marine accident.

A solution approach based on beam search algorithm for disassembly line balancing problem

Mete, Süleyman; Çil, Zeynel Abidin; Ağpak, Kürşad; Özceylan, Eren; Dolgui, Alexandre

The disassembly line balancing (DLB) problem is the process of allocating a set of disassembly tasks to an ordered sequence of workstations in such a way that optimizes some performance measures (e.g., cycle time, number of stations). Since DLB problems belong to the class of NP hard, many heuristic and meta-heuristic algorithms are applied to cope with the complexity of the DLB problems in order to obtain acceptable solutions in a reasonable amount of time. In this study, a beam search (BS) based approach for the DLB problem is proposed. Minimization of number of workstations is used as the performance measure. The proposed algorithm is compared with the optimal solutions of well-known real cases and generated test problems. The results indicate that the proposed approach based on BS is a very competitive and promising tool for further researches.

Geochemistry of the metavolcanic rocks from the Çangaldağ complex in the central pontides: Implications for the middle jurassic arc-back-arc system in the neotethyan intra-pontide ocean

Çimen, Okay; Göncüoğlu, M. Cemal; Sayit, Kaan

The Cangaldağ Complex in northern central Turkey is one of the main tectonic units of the Central Pontide Structural Complex that represents the remains of the poorly known Intra-Pontide branch of the Neotethys. It comprises low-grade metamorphic rocks of intrusive, extrusive, and volcaniclastic origin displaying a wide range of felsic to mafic compositions. Petrographically the complex consists of basalts-andesites-rhyodacites and tuffs with minor amount of gabbros and diabases. On the basis of geochemistry, the Cangaldağ samples are of subalkaline character and represented by both primitive and evolved members. All rock types are variably depleted in Nb compared to LREEs, similar to the lavas from subduction-related tectonic settings. In N-MORB normalized plots, the primitive members are separated into 3 groups on the basis of levels of enrichment. The first group is highly depleted and displays characteristics of boninitic lavas. The second group is relatively enriched compared to the first group but still more depleted than N-MORB. The third group, however, is the most enriched one among the three, whose level of enrichment is around that of N-MORB. The overall geochemical features suggest that the Cangaldağ Complex has been generated with the involvement of a subductionmodified mantle source. The chemistry of the primitive members further indicates that the melts generated for the formation of the Cangaldağ Complex probably occurred in both arc and back-arc regions above an intraoceanic subduction within the Intra-Pontide branch of the Neotethys.

The Greek Orthodox Patriarchate of Jerusalem

    Satis, Ihsan; Ceyhan, Muhammed

The oldest independent Greek Orthodox Patriarchates within the Ottoman Empire were those in Constantinople, Antioch, Alexandria and Jerusalem. Among these four patriarchates, the Greek Orthodox Patriarchate of Jerusalem continues to preserve the highest status among the Patriarchates of Jerusalem as the oldest and largest church in Palestine. The history of Patriarchate goes back to Jesus as evident from the writings of the Apostles. Eastern Roman Empire granted autonomy in the local hierarchy of eastern churches at the council of Chalcedon in 451. Thus, the Greek Patriarchate of Jerusalem was established. The Greek Patriarchate of Jerusalem always had a special kind of symbolic influence, and importance for the universal Christian imagination, chiefly as the site of holy places where the Lord taught, suffered, and ascended to Heavens again. Patriarchate, which fell under Ottomans rule in the reign of Sultan Selim, was granted many privileges and exemptions. These exemptions and concessions continued until the collapse of the State. The patriarchate, too, was a beneficiary to the changes brought about by the 1856 Reform Edict and regulations of the Greek Orthodox Patriarchate of Jerusalem were drafted in 1875. In this paper, the foundation, general structure, and the regulations of 1875 will be discussed.
