The effectiveness of AgNPs synthesized using Aspergillus floccosus for controlling Phoma herbarum and Aphis Pomi de Geer

Aker, Onur; Bektaş, İdris; Yazdıç, Ferit Can

This study was conducted to synthesise silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) using Aspergillus floccosus fungal extract and to evaluate the pesticidal efficacy of the resulting nanopesticide product against two harmful organisms (pathogenic fungus and pest) affecting apples. The synthesised AgNPs were subjected to a series of characterisation tests (UV-Vis, FTIR, XRD, SEM, TEM, EDX, Zeta Potential) and, based on the results obtained, the AgNPs synthesis was successfully completed. Within the scope of this study, the first registration process has been carried out for the fungal pathogen (Phoma herbarum) that causes rot disease in apple fruits. The fungicidal efficacy of five concentrations of AgNPs (10, 25, 50, 100, and 200 mg L⁻¹) was evaluated against this pathogen under both in vitro and in vivo conditions. The results showed that AgNPs exhibited a significant inhibition on the mycelial growth of Phoma herbarum in vitro. The 200 mg L⁻¹ concentration showed the highest inhibition percentage (81.5%). Concerning in vivo test, the effect of AgNPs on disease severity index of Phoma herbarum in apple fruits was evaluated. The result of this part showed that the concentration 200 mg L⁻¹ of AgNPs exhibits highest fungicidal efficacy disease reduction rates (100%), Following by 67% for AgNPs 100 mg L⁻¹. The insecticidal effects of AgNPs on fourth-stage nymphs and adults of the pest (Aphis pomi) were evaluated in laboratory and field applications. For this purpose, AgNPs prepared at five different concentrations (30, 60, 90, 120, and 150 mg L⁻¹) were sprayed on the pests. The results showed that the insecticidal efficacy of AgNPs against Aphis pomi was directly related to both the dose and the exposure time. Specifically, the lethal concentration required to kill adults (LC50: 48.9 mg L⁻¹ for laboratory application and 68.4 mg L⁻¹ for orchard application) was higher than the dose required for nymphs (LC50: 32.3 mg L⁻¹ for laboratory and 52.1 mg L⁻¹ for orchard application). A similar trend was observed for lethal time, with adults exhibiting longer required exposure times (LT50: 51.2 h in the lab and 58.4 h in the orchard) compared to nymphs (LT50: 42.0 h in the lab and 45.1 h in the orchard). According to the results obtained, AgNPs synthesised using Aspergillus floccosus fungus have been proven to be highly effective at low doses against two major harmful organisms that cause qualitative and quantitative losses in apples. In conclusion, it has been proven that this silver-based nano pesticide product can be used as an alternative and innovative product in combating factors that cause agricultural damage to protect apple health.

The effect of hydrostatic water level on the local scour downstream of plunging aerated jets

Tunc, Mustafa; Aytac, Ayca; Tuna, M. Cihat; Acar, Ramazan

This paper reports an experimental study on the effect of hydrostatic water level on local scour downstream of plunge aerated jets. To examine the shape of the scour for non-cohesive bed material, different flow and air rates, and different aeration capabilities, hydrostatic water level circumstances were tested. The water jets were aerated using conduit systems with varying cover opening ratios. Measurements were made to determine the length of the scour hole, the value of the maximum scour depth, the location of the maximum scour depth, and the scour hole profile in equilibrium. The current findings show that downstream hydrostatic water levels have a significant impact on the maximum depth and area of scour. Additionally, it was discovered that the conduit gate opening ratio and aeration performance (Qa/Qw) are crucial factors that affect the geometry and diameters of scour holes. The properties of scour caused by various hydrostatic levels were systematically compared to develop empirical correlations for predicting the maximum scour depth. Consequently, predictive emprical formulas incorporating these hydrostatic variations and aeration parameters are presented to improve engineering design accuracy.

Modulation of SIRT1/PPARγ pathways and tight junction proteins by nicotinamide riboside under chronic variable stress

Celik, Abdullah; Sahin, Nurhan; Orhan, Cemal; Er, Besir; Erten, Fusun; Ozmen, Busra; Tuzcu, Mehmet; Ozercan, Ibrahim Hanifi; Sahin, Kazim

Abstract: Chronic stress disrupts homeostasis, leading to major health problems such as liver damage, intestinal barrier dysfunction, and impaired glucose metabolism. Although current treatments, including anxiolytics, sedatives, antidepressants, and beta blockers, are effective, their adverse effects emphasize the need for safer alternatives. Nicotinamide riboside (NR), a precursor of nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NAD+), plays a central role in energy metabolism and oxidative stress regulation; elevated NAD + levels have been associated with reduced risk of chronic diseases such as obesity and type 2 diabetes. However, the effects of NR on liver metabolism, intestinal barrier integrity, and related protein pathways remain unclear. This study investigated the effects of NR supplementation in rats exposed to chronic variable stress (CVS). Fifty-six male Sprague Dawley rats were divided into normal and CVS groups and treated in a 2 × 4 factorial design with 0, 150, 300, or 600 mg/kg NR. Under CVS conditions, serum glucose, corticosterone, ACTH, and insulin levels increased, whereas NAD+, NADPH, nicotinamide (NAM), and nicotinic acid (NA) decreased significantly (p < 0.001). NR supplementation effectively corrected these biochemical imbalances and upregulated hepatic markers, including PPARγ, SIRT1, GLUT2, IRS1, and FASN (p < 0.001). Furthermore, the increased expression of key transport proteins such as PepT1, LAT2, EAAT3, FABP2, and FATP4 contributed to maintaining intestinal barrier integrity and improving gut health. NR also promoted the recovery of tight and adherens junction proteins. Notably, high-dose NR (600 mg/kg) markedly alleviated liver fibrosis, improved glucose metabolism, and strengthened intestinal barrier function, demonstrating its therapeutic potential as an alternative strategy against stress-induced metabolic disorders. Key points: • NR mitigated chronic stress-induced liver, intestinal, and glucose dysregulation. • NR improved glycemia and NAD⁺-related biomarkers under stress. • NR reduced hepatic fibrosis markers. • NR strengthened TJ/AJ proteins, supporting intestinal barrier integrity. • Findings support NR’s therapeutic potential in stress-related metabolism.

Psychological well-being and aggression in handball players: examining the mediating role of exercise addiction

Güler, Muhammed; Yeşiltepe, Akgün; Topcuoğlu, Ceyhun

Objective: This study aimed to examine the relationship between psychological well-being and aggression among handball players and to determine whether exercise addiction mediates this relationship. Methods: A descriptive, cross-sectional, and correlational design was used. The population consisted of players competing in the Turkish Handball Leagues during the 2024–2025 season, and 442 athletes participated using a non-probability sampling method. Data were collected via an online survey including a personal information form, the Psychological Well-Being Scale, the Buss–Perry Aggression Questionnaire, and the Exercise Addiction Inventory. Results: Psychological well-being showed a significant negative correlation with aggression (r = −0.242, p < 0.001). Exercise addiction was positively associated with both psychological well-being (r = 0.212, p < 0.001) and aggression (r = 0.105, p = 0.027). Mediation analysis indicated that exercise addiction significantly and partially mediated the relationship between psychological well-being and aggression (indirect effect 95% CI: 0.0246–0.1654). The direct effect of psychological well-being on aggression remained significant (β = −0.7093, p < 0.001). Conclusion: Higher psychological well-being was associated with lower aggression among handball players, whereas exercise addiction was associated with both higher psychological well-being and higher aggression and emerged as a partial statistical mediator of this relationship. These findings may help inform future studies and preventive strategies focusing on athlete mental health and behavioral regulation. However, because of the cross-sectional design, causal inferences cannot be drawn.

Reliability and validity of the Turkish version of the pain attention and awareness questionnaire for nonspecific musculoskeletal pain

Sürmeli, Mahmut; Özdemir, Özlem Çinar; Topcuoğlu, Ceyhun

Background: Reliable and valid assessments of pain vigilance and awareness are crucial for understanding and treating pain within cognitive-behavioral frameworks, such as the fear-Avoidance Model. While the Pain Vigilance and Awareness Questionnaire (PVAQ) is a widely used tool for this purpose, no culturally adapted and validated version exists for the Turkish-speaking population, creating an instrumental and clinical gap. Objective: This study aimed to translate, culturally adapt, and comprehensively evaluate the psychometric properties of the Turkish version of the PVAQ in a sample of patients with nonspecific musculoskeletal pain. Methods: An instrumental, cross-sectional study was conducted. The PVAQ was translated and adapted into Turkish according to established guidelines. A sample of 131 patients with low back, neck, or shoulder pain completed the PVAQ-T, the Pain Catastrophizing Scale (PCS), the Tampa Scale for Kinesiophobia (TSK), the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS), and a visual analog scale (VAS) for pain intensity. Reliability was assessed via internal consistency (Cronbach’s alpha) and test-retest reliability (intraclass correlation coefficient - ICC). Construct validity was examined via exploratory factor analysis (EFA) and confirmatory factor analysis (CFA). Criterion validity was evaluated through Pearson correlations with the PCS, TSK, and HADS. Results: The PVAQ-T demonstrated acceptable internal consistency (Cronbach’s α = 0.83) and good test-retest reliability (ICC = 0.918). EFA supported a two-factor structure (vigilance and awareness), explaining 62.3% of the variance. CFA indicated that the original 16-item model had a suboptimal fit (CFI = 0.807; GFI = 0.732; SRMR = 0.060; RMSEA = 0.138, and χ²/df = 3.46). Following the removal of items 4 and 12 based on exploratory and item-level findings, some fit indices showed modest improvement (CFI = 0.836; GFI = 0.768; SRMR = 0.006), whereas others remained unchanged or worsened (RMSEA = 0.144; χ²/df = 3.69). The PVAQ-T total score showed moderately to strongly, statistically significant (p < 0.001) correlations with the PCS (r = 0.681), TSK (r = 0.694), HADS-Anxiety (r = 0.491), and HADS-Depression (r = 0.416) scores, supporting its criterion validity. Conclusion: Within a Turkish sample of individuals with nonspecific musculoskeletal pain, the 14-item Turkish version of the PVAQ demonstrates adequate reliability and validity for assessing pain-related attention and awareness. While the two-factor structure was supported at the exploratory level, confirmatory findings suggest that results should be interpreted with caution. The PVAQ-TR may be a useful instrument for research and clinical assessment of pain-related attentional processes, highlighting the importance of cultural adaptation and empirical evaluation of psychometric instruments.

The relationship between empathy levels of obstetrics and gynecology specialists and their attitudes toward posthumous organ donation

ÖZBEY, Gürkan; YEŞİLTEPE, Akgün; Dokuzcan, Deniz Aslı

Empathy is recognized as a critical factor in shaping attitudes toward organ donation among healthcare professionals. Given the continuous patient interaction and decision-making roles of obstetrics and gynecology specialists, the limited number of studies examining the link between empathy levels and attitudes toward postmortem organ donation represents a significant gap in literature. This study aims to investigate the relationship between empathy levels and attitudes toward postmortem organ donation among obstetrics and gynecology specialists. This correlational cross-sectional study included 142 obstetrics and gynecology specialists. Data were collected via Google Forms using a personal information form, the Toronto Empathy Questionnaire, and the Attitude toward Posthumous Organ Donation for Transplantation Scale. Analyses were conducted using SPSS 26 and JASP 0.19, including the Spearman’s correlation, Mann-Whitney U, Kruskal-Wallis, and Machine Learning-Random Forest regression analysis methods. 93% of the participants stated that their empathy levels influenced organ donation decisions, and 74.6% reported considering organ donation. Their mean TEQ score was 56.25 ± 7.51, while their mean APODS score was 4.37 ± 0.57. A statistically significant moderate positive correlation was found between empathy and general attitudes toward postmortem organ donation (r = 0.428, p < 0.05). Statistically significant, weak-to-moderate positive correlations were also found between empathy levels and the APODS Positive Attitudes dimension (r = 0.373 p < 0.01), Religion dimension (r = 0.266, p < 0.01), and Family Approval dimension (r = 0.352, p < 0.01) scores of the participants. Significant differences were observed in empathy scores based on gender, empathy levels, and organ donation consideration status (p < 0.05). Attitudes toward posthumous organ donation also varied significantly by empathy levels, donation consideration status, ethical/humanitarian perception of donation, and religious influence (p < 0.05). In the exploratory Random Forest model, attitudes toward organ donation had the highest relative contribution to model performance. Obstetrics and gynecology specialists exhibit moderate empathy levels and highly positive attitudes toward posthumous organ donation. Higher empathy scores were associated with more favorable attitudes toward organ donation among obstetrics and gynecology physicians. Interventions addressing empathy and donation awareness may be valuable, but their effects on attitudes and donation-related behavior should be tested in longitudinal and interventional studies.

Comparative effects of topical Maresin-1 and cyclosporine A in a capsaicin-induced rat model of neurotrophic keratopathy

Canan Sezis, Selen; Güngör Kobat, Sabiha; Kuloğlu, Tuncay; İlhan, Nevin; Erten, Füsun

Purpose: To evaluate and compare the effects of topical Maresin-1 (MaR1) and cyclosporine A (CsA) in a capsaicin-induced rat model of neurotrophic keratopathy (NK). Methods: A total of 40 Sprague-Dawley rats were allocated to five groups (n = 8 per group): Control, NK, NK + Vehicle, NK + CsA (0.05%), and NK + MaR1. Except for the Control group, all animals received a single subcutaneous injection of capsaicin (50 mg/kg) on postnatal day 2. Topical treatments were applied twice daily for 14 days. Corneal TrkA, TNF-α, and Caspase-3 expression were assessed by immunohistochemistry and Western blot. Results: Both treatment groups significantly restored TrkA expression and reduced TNF-α and Caspase-3 relative to NK + Vehicle (p < 0.05 for all). CsA produced greater suppression of TNF-α than MaR1 (p < 0.001), whereas MaR1 demonstrated greater reduction in Caspase-3 than CsA (p = 0.013), with no significant difference between groups for TrkA (p = 0.054). Conclusion: Both MaR1 and CsA significantly attenuated the neurotrophic, inflammatory, and apoptotic changes associated with experimental NK. The distinct efficacy profiles of the two agents suggest complementary mechanisms of action and warrant further investigation of MaR1 in neurotrophic keratopathy.

Sobahi, Nebras; Küçük, Deniz Bora; Kılıç, Kazım; İmak, Andaç; Çelebi, Adalet; Alghamedi, Yazyd; Yazicioglu, Cafer; Türkoğlu, Muammer; Şengür, Abdulkadir

Background/Objectives: Dental caries is one of the most common oral diseases worldwide, and early diagnosis is essential for effective treatment. However, detecting carious lesions in panoramic radiographs is challenging because of low image contrast, anatomical complexity, and overlapping structures. This study aimed to develop an improved object detection framework for dental caries localization in panoramic radiographs. Methods: A modified YOLOv8 architecture was developed by integrating ConvNeXtV2 blocks into the Cross-Stage Partial (C2f) modules to enhance feature extraction and gradient propagation. To improve detection performance and reduce overfitting, key training hyperparameters were optimized using a genetic algorithm. The proposed model was evaluated on a dataset of 474 panoramic dental radiographs annotated by experts using bounding boxes. Results: The optimized model achieved a box precision of 78.4%, a recall of 53.6%, and a mean average precision at 50% intersection-over-union threshold (AP50) of 62.6%. Compared with the baseline YOLOv8 model, the proposed approach improved precision and AP50. Visual and quantitative analyses demonstrated that the ConvNeXtV2-enhanced architecture enabled more accurate localization of carious regions. Conclusions: The results indicate that combining ConvNeXtV2-based architectural enhancement with genetic algorithm-based hyperparameter optimization is an effective strategy for dental caries localization in panoramic radiographs. Although recall remains a limitation, the proposed framework shows potential as a computer-aided diagnostic tool for supporting clinical caries assessment.

Sperm cryopreservation of sex-reversed rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss): incorporation of amino acids and anti-oxidants to the extender media to improve the anti-oxidant system

Kocabaş, Filiz Kutluyer; Kocabaş, Mehmet; Benzer, Fulya; Erişir, Mine

Anti-oxidants are vital for protecting sperm and can mitigate the negative effects associated with cryopreservation. This study was conducted to evaluate the protective effects of adding anti-oxidants (vitamins and amino acids) to extender in sex-reversed rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) sperm. The collected sperm was diluted at the ratio of 1: 5 by the extenders supplemented with different anti-oxidants including 1.00 mM of ascorbic acid and L-tryptophan, 2.00 mM of cysteine and α-tocopherol, and their combination. After dilution, the semen was aspirated into 0.50 mL straws, and the straws were placed on the tray, frozen for 10 min, and plunged into liquid nitrogen. Straws were thawed in a 30.00 ˚C water bath for 15 sec. The Sperm Class Analyzer System was used to evaluate sperm kinematics. The activity of anti-oxidant enzymes and lipid peroxidation were determined as oxidative stress indices. Our data indicated that the incorporation of anti-oxidants and amino acids increased sperm motility duration. The elevated activity of glutathione peroxidase, superoxide dismutase, and catalase in post-thaw samples indicates that the anti-oxidant system in sex-reversed rainbow trout sperm likely plays a crucial role in protecting membrane compounds from oxidation. In conclusion, the combination of 1.00 mM L-tryptophan and ascorbic acid to the extender media caused a prolonging effect in sperm motility after thawing and they have the potential to serve as effective agents for improving sperm cryosurvival.

Occurrence of Antimicrobial Resistance in Kocuria rhizophila Bacteria Isolated From Salmo munzuricus (Teleostei: Salmonidae) Samples in Natural Resources

    Kar, Bülent

Global warming and environmental pollution trigger the emergence of antimicrobial-resistant (AMR) opportunistic pathogens in the aquatic microflora. This study aimed to determine the characterization and AMR profile of the opportunistic pathogen Kocuria rhizophila isolated from the tissues of Salmo munzuricus (Munzur trout), an endemic species. Samples collected from the Munzur River were identified using morphological and molecular (16S rDNA) methods; bacterial isolates were characterized by MALDI-TOF and sequencing. The resistance status against 11 different antibiotics was analyzed with the Kirby-Bauer method. The findings revealed that the isolates (with 99.51% accuracy as K. rhizophila) showed full resistance to Penicillin G (p < 0.01) and were moderately sensitive to gentamicin and tetracycline. High sensitivity to amoxicillin and ampicillin was detected. These findings demonstrate that even in natural environments, the fish microbiome in wild endemic populations can be susceptible to the development of AMR in response to environmental changes. Therefore, determining the resistance of opportunistic pathogens in wild fish species such as Salmo munzuricus to different classes of antibiotics and studying their spread is extremely important for natural ecosystems.

The vagus nerve plays a modulatory role in the gut-brain axis. Intestinal barrier dysfunction and lipopolysaccharide (LPS) leakage into the systemic circulation are associated with several conditions, such as irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) and migraine headache. This study investigates the impact of non-invasive transauricular vagus nerve stimulation (tVNS) on the neuroinflammatory markers and pain behavior following an acute LPS challenge. Sprague–Dawley rats (n = 28) were given LPS or vehicle and subjected to tVNS or sham intervention in an acute LPS animal model that mimics the systemic consequences of barrier dysfunction. Behaviors were evaluated at the baseline and 6 h later, complemented by testing the levels of serum and brain neuroinflammatory markers. Behavioral analyses revealed that LPS exposure reduced the time spent in the open arm, grooming duration, and periorbital mechanical pain thresholds, and increased freezing duration. The tVNS intervention reversed these behavioral changes induced by LPS. LPS administration triggered elevated serum levels of IL-6, CGRP, haptoglobin, and VE-cadherin. LPS also increased IL-1β, PAR-2, haptoglobin, CGRP, and HMGB1 levels in the brain tissue. The tVNS intervention reversed the effects observed in the brain, but it did not change the elevated levels of inflammatory molecules in the systemic circulation. tVNS has the potential to modulate neuroimmune interactions, with an early impact on the brain during LPS surge. tVNS may have potential therapeutic benefits in managing pain-related disorders associated with LPS endotoxemia.

Surface EMG-Based Hand Gesture Recognition Using a Hybrid Multistream Deep Learning Architecture

    Çelik, Yusuf; Can, Umit

Surface electromyography (sEMG) enables non-invasive measurement of muscle activity for applications such as human–machine interaction, rehabilitation, and prosthesis control. However, high noise levels, inter-subject variability, and the complex nature of muscle activation hinder robust gesture classification. This study proposes a multistream hybrid deep-learning architecture for the FORS-EMG dataset to address these challenges. The model integrates Temporal Convolutional Networks (TCN), depthwise separable convolutions, bidirectional Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM)–Gated Recurrent Unit (GRU) layers, and a Transformer encoder to capture complementary temporal and spectral patterns, and an ArcFace-based classifier to enhance class separability. We evaluate the approach under three protocols: subject-wise, random split without augmentation, and random split with augmentation. In the augmented random-split setting, the model attains 96.4% accuracy, surpassing previously reported values. In the subject-wise setting, accuracy is 74%, revealing limited cross-user generalization. The results demonstrate the method’s high performance and highlight the impact of data-partition strategies for real-world sEMG-based gesture recognition.

Comprehensive Analysis of Phytochemical Compounds in Seeds of Indigenous Grape Varieties Cultivated in Southeastern Anatolia: Fatty Acids, Tocopherols, Phytosterols, Vitamins, and Antioxidant Properties

Odabaşioğlu, Mehmet İlhan; Çakır, Atilla; Karaca Sanyürek, Nesrin; İşlek, Fırat

Aim: In this study, the phytochemical composition of the seeds of twelve different local grape (Vitis vinifera L.) varieties traditionally cultivated in the Southeastern Anatolia Region (Diyarbakır, Türkiye) was investigated using a holistic approach. The main objective of the study was to evaluate the associations of the effects of berry skin colour, the ripening stage and utilization type on the fatty acid profile, tocopherol and phytosterol contents, vitamin K and D levels, antioxidant capacity (DPPH) and lipid peroxidation (MDA) of grape seeds. Method: The seeds of grape varieties belonging to four different colour groups, grown on their own roots, were harvested during the 2017 growing season and analysed. Fatty acid composition was determined by gas chromatography (GC), vitamin and phytosterol contents by HPLC-UV, MDA content by the thiobarbituric acid reactive substance (TBARS) method, and antioxidant capacity by the DPPH radical scavenging assay. Findings: Linoleic acid was identified as the predominant fatty acid in all varieties (53.68–67.06%), followed by oleic acid (13.80–27.32%). α-Tocopherol was identified as the predominant tocopherol form (1.597–4.703 mg kg−1), whilst β-sitosterol was the phytosterol component present at the highest level (915.67–3340.42 µg g−1). Statistically significant varietal differences were detected for most measured phytochemical parameters. Group-wise differences associated with berry skin colour and ripening stage were observed for selected traits. Overall, varietal differences appeared to be more pronounced than those associated with berry skin colour or ripening stage. It was observed that the differences in phytochemical composition between the various commercial classifications of grapes were very limited. Result: The findings reveal that the seeds of the local grape varieties studied exhibit a rich phytochemical profile and represent an important source of bioactive compounds that could be utilised, particularly in the functional food, nutraceutical and cosmetics industries. The ‘Tahannebi’ variety stood out as the one with the highest values across many parameters. Differences observed among samples of the same cultivar collected from different vineyards suggest that vineyard-specific conditions may contribute to variation in selected phytochemical traits. Future multi-year and multi-location studies are needed to confirm the stability of these phytochemical profiles and to further clarify genotype × environment interactions.

Ibuprofen, a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug, has been detected in the aquatic environment, but little is known about its effects on fish and other aquatic organisms. This study aimed to investigate the effect of ibuprofen on micronucleus levels in erythrocytes and whole-body antioxidant parameters of carp (Cyprinus carpio) fry. Fish were exposed to immersion in two different doses of ibuprofen concentrations (50 and 250 μg/L) for 24, 48, 72 and 96 h and 14 days. No mortalities occurred in any group during the test. Abnormal behaviours such as irregular swimming, loss of balance and hanging vertically in the water were observed in some fish exposed to acute toxicity. In this study, a significant increase in the micronucleus number of red blood cells was observed throughout the study period (p < 0.05). Antioxidant parameters were measured spectrophotometrically. Results obtained showed that ibuprofen significantly increased (p < 0.05) malondialdehyde (MDA) levels, glutathione S-transferase (GST) and catalase (CAT) activities, but decreased (p < 0.05) the glutathione (GSH) levels of whole-body carp fry in a dose-dependent manner. Furthermore, ibuprofen significantly increased MDA, GST and CAT levels, but increased the GSH levels of whole-body carp fry in a time-dependent manner. These results indicate that carp fry is sensible to human pharmaceutical agents in aquatic environments. The manner and the constructed interactions between ibuprofen and two protein targets (immunoglobin and haemoglobin) were investigated using molecular docking and molecular dynamics simulation. The results indicated that ibuprofen could affect the haemoglobin activity. Finally, absorption, distribution, metabolism, excretion and toxicity analysis was performed to examine the drug potential of the studied molecules.

Quality Enhancement of Rhubarb (Rheum ribes L.) Jam by Ohmic Heating

Özdede, Gizem Merve; Özakdağ, Işılay; Sevim, Esra; Karakavuk, Emrah; Sabancı, Serdal

This study aims to comparatively investigate the production of jam from Rheum ribes L., a plant known for its functional properties, using both conventional and ohmic heating methods, and to evaluate the effects of these methods on quality parameters. Ohmic heating was applied at three different voltage gradients (25, 30, and 35 V/cm) and compared with conventional heating. In both methods, jam samples were produced until they reached a total soluble solids (TSS) content of 66%, after which total phenolic content (TPC), antioxidant activity, ascorbic acid (vitamin C), hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF), and individual phenolic compounds were analyzed. According to the results, the highest TPC (488.37 mg gallic acid equivalent [GAE]/kg), antioxidant activity (595.6 mg ascorbic acid equivalent [AAE]/kg), and vitamin C content (23.6 ppm) were obtained at 35 V/cm. In contrast, the conventional method yielded significantly lower values for these parameters and a higher HMF content (29.9 ppm). Ohmic heating enabled a much shorter processing time, reducing energy consumption by approximately sixfold and contributing to better retention of nutritional components. Additionally, higher voltage gradients resulted in improved preservation of individual phenolic compounds (such as gallic acid, catechin, and rutin). The findings indicate that, compared to the conventional method, ohmic heating offers higher efficiency, better retention of bioactive compounds, and a more sustainable production approach due to its lower energy requirement.

Predictive Value of Health Literacy on Health-Promoting and Protective Behaviours in Turkish Nurses and Allied Health Workers

    Deniz Akan, Dilan; Yeşiltepe, Akgün

Aim: This study aims to investigate the extent to which Turkish nurses and allied health workers' levels of health literacy predict health-promoting and protective behaviours. Desing: A descriptive and cross-sectional study design was used. Methods: The study was conducted with 403 Turkish nurses and allied health workers working in different regions of Türkiye between January and May 2024. JASP 0.18.3.0, Jamovi 2.3.21, and SPSS 26 and AMOS26 programs were used for data analysis. Descriptive statistics and simple and multiple regression analysis were used in the analysis of the data. Results: A positive, moderately significant relationship was found between health literacy and health-promoting and protective behaviours (r = 0.460, p < 0.001). Regression analysis results showed that health literacy explained 21.1% (R2 = 21.1) of the change in health-promoting and protective behaviours and was a significant predictor of health-promoting and protective behaviours. Patient or Public Contribution: Understanding the predictive effect of health literacy and preventive health behaviours can guide practices and policies that will improve the level of health literacy and preventive health behaviours in healthcare workers. Correction: 2D MHD Mixed Convection in a Zigzag Trapezoidal Thermal Energy Storage System Using NEPCM (Nanomaterials, (2022), 12, 19, (3270), 10.3390/nano12193270)

There were errors in the original publication [1]. In Abstract and Introduction, any reference to “heat transfer (HT) irreversibility,” “fluid friction (FF) irreversibility,” or “Bejan number” is erroneous and should be removed. Any reference to “wave number” should be corrected to “zigzag number,” which is the relevant parameter in the study. The corrected Abstract and the corrected sentence in the last paragraph of the Introduction appear below, respectively. In a magnetic field, two-dimensional (2D) mixed convection is investigated within a zigzagged trapezoidal chamber. The lower side of the trapezoidal chamber is irregular, in particular, a zigzagged wall with different zigzag numbers N. The fluid particles move in the room due to the motion of the upper wall, while the porosity-enthalpy approach represents the melting process. The thermal parameters of the fluid are enhanced by what is called a nano-encapsulated phase change material (NEPCM) consisting of polyurethane as the shell and a nonadecane as the core, while water is used as the base fluid. In order to treat the governing equations, the well-known Galerkin finite element method (GFEM) is applied. In addition, the heat transfer (HT) and the dynamic behavior of flow are treated in terms of average Nusselt number and contours of streamlines. The main results show that the melt band curve of heat capacity behaves almost parabolically at smaller values of Reynolds number (Re) and larger values of Hartmann number (Ha). Moreover, minimizing the zigzag number is better in order to obtain a higher heat transfer rate. In addition, a comparative study of the heat transfer and the dynamic behavior of flow in terms of average Nusselt number and contours of streamlines has been presented. In Section 2.1. Mathematical Modeling and Equations, Paragraph 3 and Paragraph 4, the term of porosity must be added to the momentum equations. The Equations (2), (3), (8) and (9) should be updated to the following: (Formula presented.) (Formula presented.) (Formula presented.) (Formula presented.) In Section 2.1. Mathematical Modeling and Equations, Paragraph 4, Paragraph 5 and Paragraph 9, there is no cylinder inside the cavity, and any reference to a “cylinder” or “diameter D” is incorrect and should be disregarded. The pressure in Equation (6), the Reynolds Number in Equation (11) and the definition for the average Nusselt number at the zigzag wall in Equation (16) should be updated to the following: (Formula presented.) (Formula presented.) (Formula presented.) The authors state that the scientific conclusions are unaffected. This correction was approved by the Academic Editor. The original publication has also been updated.

Nutraceuticals in Uro-Oncology: A Structured Expert Review and Precision-Oriented Framework

Erten, Fusun; Kalemoglu, Ecem; Kucuk, Omer; Sahin, Kazim

Urologic malignancies (UMs), including prostate cancer (PCa), bladder cancer (BCa), renal cell carcinoma (RCC), and testicular germ cell tumors (TGCT), are governed by interconnected molecular pathways that regulate proliferation, angiogenesis, metabolism, invasion, immune escape, and treatment resistance. Key pathways include PI3K/AKT/mTOR, VEGF/VEGFR, EGFR, FGFR, c-MET, androgen receptor signaling, DNA damage response, inflammatory transcriptional programs, and regulation of the tumor microenvironment. This structured expert review evaluates mechanistic, translational, epidemiological, and clinical evidence on food- and botanical-derived nutraceuticals that may influence cancer-related signaling, redox balance, inflammation, metabolic adaptation, and host–tumor interactions. Nutraceuticals are considered investigational adjunctive exposures rather than anticancer treatments or alternatives to standard care. Relevant literature was identified through a structured, non-systematic search of PubMed/MEDLINE, Scopus, Web of Science Core Collection, and Embase from database inception to 17 June 2026, supplemented by backward and forward citation searches. Eligible evidence comprised preclinical, observational, interventional, pharmacokinetic, formulation, safety, and drug–nutraceutical interaction studies. Evidence was evaluated by cancer type, compound class, molecular context, formulation, exposure, translational maturity, and safety, and was classified into five stages: prevention signal, mechanistic plausibility, bioavailability and exposure feasibility, exposure-linked biomarker activity, and clinical benefit. An exposure–species–compartment framework was used to assess whether parent compounds and relevant metabolites reached systemic, urinary, or target-tissue concentrations compatible with the proposed effects. Findings based solely on supraphysiological concentrations of unconjugated parent compounds were considered hypothesis-generating unless supported by human exposure or tissue-distribution data. Curcumin, green tea catechins, isoflavones, carotenoids, flavonols, stilbenes, and triterpenoids affect several cancer-related pathways, primarily in experimental models. Translation to clinical practice is constrained by inconsistent formulations, limited bioavailability, inadequate target-tissue exposure data, few biomarker-linked studies, and possible interactions with anticancer therapies. PCa and BCa provide the most suitable settings for exposure-verified mechanistic studies. In RCC, safety and treatment interactions should be prioritized, whereas in TGCTs, non-interference with curative cisplatin-based therapy must be demonstrated. Future studies should use chemically defined formulations, verify clinically relevant exposure, incorporate mechanism-matched biological-response endpoints, and confirm compatibility with established treatment. Current evidence does not support nutraceuticals as treatments for urologic malignancies.

Sleep quality in children with epilepsy and their mothers: A cross-sectional study

    Veziroğlu, H.; Kemer, D.

Background The aim of this study is to evaluate the sleep quality of children with epilepsy and their mothers, and to identify the factors affecting sleep quality. Methods The sample comprised 103 mothers of children with epilepsy aged 318 years. Data were collected during face-to-face interviews using the Children's Sleep Habits Questionnaire (CSHQ) and the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI). The data were analyzed using one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA), the Mann-Whitney U test, and correlation analysis. Results According to PSQI, 76.7% of mothers were found to have poor sleep quality. The mean total CSHQ score was 49.99 ± 7.60, indicating clinically significant sleep problems among the children. Mothers' PSQI total scores were significantly associated with income status, number of children, duration of epilepsy, and time spent in digital environments (p < 0.05). Children's CSHQ total scores were significantly associated with age at first seizure, seizure frequency, occurrence of seizures during the last three months, presence of nocturnal seizures, number of antiepileptic drugs used, and ownership of a phone/computer (p < 0.05). Conclusion It was found that children with epilepsy experienced sleep problems related to bedtime resistance and daytime sleepiness, and that their mothers had poor sleep quality. Therefore, the development of supportive intervention programs is recommended to prevent and manage sleep problems in children with epilepsy and their mothers. Implications to practice Multidisciplinary collaboration and nurse-led interventions should be implemented to promote sleep health and improve the quality of life of children with epilepsy and their families.

Hydrogeochemical controls on chromium speciation and potential human health risks in surface waters of an ultramafic mining watershed

Accurate assessment of chromium contamination in mining-influenced watersheds requires distinguishing between the environmentally contrasting Cr(III) and Cr(VI) species, yet environmental monitoring and risk assessments still rely predominantly on total chromium concentrations. This study evaluated whether chromium speciation provides additional information beyond operational total chromium for assessing chromium occurrence and potential human health risks in an ultramafic, mining-influenced watershed. Surface-water samples were collected from 28 sampling stations across the Pülümür and Ovacık regions of the Eastern Anatolia Basin (Türkiye) between March 2025 and February 2026. Chromium speciation was determined using species-specific UV–Visible spectrophotometric methods and integrated with hydrochemical characterization, multivariate statistical analyses, mineralogical investigations (XRD, SEM–EDS, and FTIR), and deterministic and empirical-bootstrap human health risk assessments. Operational total chromium, defined as the sum of separately measured Cr(III) and Cr(VI), ranged from below the detection limit to 578.13 µg L−1. For contextual screening, this calculated value exceeded World Health Organization (WHO) drinking-water guideline for total chromium at 14 stations; however, it was not an independently measured total-Cr concentration. The highest Cr(VI) concentration occurred at a localized hotspot, whereas Cr(III) predominated throughout most of the watershed. Nevertheless, Cr(VI)-based screening thresholds were exceeded at multiple stations under the assumed untreated drinking-water ingestion scenario, indicating that operational total chromium alone did not consistently identify the spatial distribution of Cr(VI)-related potential risk. Screening-level hazard quotient (HQ) estimates were higher for children than for adults; however, direct untreated consumption of the sampled surface waters was not verified. Mining-influenced stations generally exhibited higher chromium concentrations, although the relative contributions of geogenic weathering and mining-related mobilization could not be quantitatively apportioned. Overall, chromium speciation provided additional environmentally and toxicologically relevant information beyond operational total chromium for evaluating chromium mobility and screening-level potential human health risks in this ultramafic watershed.
