Isolation, morphological identification, and xylanase characteristics of anaerobic gut fungi Neocallimastix from Anatolian wild goat

    Kar, Bülent; Torcan, Berat

This study shows the morphological identification of anaerobic fungal strains isolated from fecal samples of goats inhabiting Turkey and the effects of various metal ions and chemicals on extracellular xylanase production. Three different anaerobic gut fungi isolated from wild goats in Turkey were identified as Neocallimastix spp. xylanase, cellulase, and lichenase production were tested in culture supernatants, and the maximum-specific activities were found as 560.42 ± 9.39, 159.70 ± 3.88, and 157.36 ± 3.83 (μmol/min/mg protein), respectively. While the optimum temperature range of exo-xylanases was found as 40–50°C, their optimum pH range was determined as 6.0–6.5. Xylanase activity decreased in metal ions and other chemical reactants based on dose. The metal ion that significantly inhibited xylanase activity was Fe+3. It was found that the ferric ions inhibited xylanase activity in all three anaerobic gut fungi by 30%–90% depending on molarity. On the contrary, the 1 mM concentrations of the Mn+2, Ba+2, Co+2, Cu+2, Sn+2, and Mg+2 metal ions and the ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid and β-mercaptoethanol reagents had a positive effect at rates in the range of 3%–92%. In conclusion, these findings demonstrate that anaerobic gut fungus has very stable fibrolytic enzymes that need to be separated, as well and the existence of a unique resource for industrial applications.

Physicochemical Properties for Food Packaging and Toxicity Behaviors Against Healthy Cells of Environmentally Friendly Biocompatible Starch/Citric Acid/Polyvinyl Alcohol Biocomposite Films

Gürler, Nedim; Paşa, Salih; Erdoğan, Ömer; Cevik, Ozge

The current study focuses on the fabrication, characterization, and cytotoxic effects of polymeric biocomposite films composed of starch, various concentrations of citric acid (3%, 6%, and 9%), and polyvinyl alcohol. The cross-linked corn starch (S)-polyvinyl alcohol (P) biocomposite films are prepared by casting technique using glucose (G) and fructose (F) as plasticizers. The chemical structure of obtained films is characterized by Fourier transform infrared and x-ray diffraction. Physicochemical parameters of the films such as solubility, swelling capacity, and water vapor permeability, optical and mechanical properties are investigated. Furthermore, the cytotoxicity is evaluated to determine the biocompatibility of samples. The physicochemical properties of S-P(Starch-Polyvinyl alcohol) films improve with the addition of citric acid during the esterification reaction. The tensile strength for Starch-Polyvinyl alcohol-Glucose blend composition with 3% citric acid (SPG3) and Starch-Polyvinyl alcohol-Fructose blend composition with 3% citric acid (SFG3) biocomposite films is determined as 10.17 and 8.24 MPa, respectively, compared to 8.16 and 7.94 MPa for without citric acid, respectively. The cell viability values of biocomposite films towards NIH-3T3 and L929 cells are calculated 90% compared to the control group. Thus, it demonstrates that they are also quite biocompatible materials.

The protective effect of arbutin against potassium bromate-induced oxidative damage in the rat brain

Akkoyun, H. Turan; Uyar, Ahmet; Bayramoglu Akkoyun, Mahire; Bengü, Aydın Şükrü; Melek, Şule; Karagözoğlu, Fatma; Aydın, Sevinç; Ekin, Suat; Erdem, Sinem Aslan

This study aimed to investigate the protective effects of arbutin (ARB) against brain injury induced in rats with potassium bromate (KBrO3). The rats were divided into four groups as Group 1: Control (0.9% NaCl ml/kg/day p.), Group 2: KBrO3 (100 mg/kg (gavage), Group 3: ARB (50 mg/kg/day p.), and Group 4: KBrO3 + ARB (100 mg/kg (gavage) + 50 mg/kg/day p.). At the end of the fifth day of the study, the rats in all groups were killed, and their brain tissues were collected. In the collected brain tissues, malondialdehyde (MDA), superoxide dismutase (SOD), and catalase (CAT) levels were measured, and routine histopathological examinations were made. The MDA levels in the group that was exposed to KBrO3 were significantly higher than those in the control group (p ˂ 0.001). In comparison to the KBrO3 group, the MDA levels in the KBrO3 + ARB group were significantly lower (p ˂ 0.001). It was observed that SOD and CAT enzyme activity levels were significantly lower in the KBrO3 group compared to the control group (p ˂ 0.001), while these levels were significantly higher in the KBrO3 + ARB group than in the KBrO3 group (p ˂ 0.001). Additionally, the group that was subjected to KBrO3 toxicity, as well as ARB administration, had much lower levels of histopathologic signs than the group that was subjected to KBrO3 toxicity only. Consequently, it was found that KBrO3 exposure led to injury in the brain tissues of the rats, and using ARB was effective in preventing this injury.

Six extracts (water, ethanol, ethanol-water, ethyl acetate, dichloromethane, and n-hexane) of Astragalus caraganae were studied for their biological activities and bioactive contents. Based on high-performance liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (HPLC-MS), the ethanol-water extract yielded the highest total bioactive content (4242.90 µg g−1), followed by the ethanol and water extracts (3721.24 and 3661.37 µg g−1, respectively), while the least total bioactive content was yielded by the hexane extract, followed by the dichloromethane and ethyl acetate extracts (47.44, 274.68, and 688.89 µg g−1, respectively). Rutin, p-coumaric, chlorogenic, isoquercitrin, and delphindin-3,5-diglucoside were among the major components. Unlike the dichloromethane extracts, all the other extracts showed radical scavenging ability in the 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical scavenging assay (8.73–52.11 mg Trolox equivalent [TE]/g), while all extracts displayed scavenging property in the 2,2-azino-bis(3-ethylbenzthiazoline-6-sulfonic acid) (ABTS) radical scavenging assay (16.18–282.74 mg TE/g). The extracts showed antiacetylcholinesterase (1.27–2.73 mg galantamine equivalent [GALAE]/g), antibutyrylcholinesterase (0.20–5.57 mg GALAE/g) and antityrosinase (9.37–63.56 mg kojic acid equivalent [KAE]/g) effects. The molecular mechanism of the H2O2-induced oxidative stress pathway was aimed to be elucidated by applying ethanol, ethanol/water and water extracts at 200 µg/mL concentration to human dermal cells (HDFs). A. caraganae in HDF cells had neither a cytotoxic nor genotoxic effect but could have a cytostatic effect in increasing concentrations. The findings have allowed a better insight into the pharmacological potential of the plant, with respect to their chemical entities and bioactive contents, as well as extraction solvents and their polarity.

Chemical Characterization of Different Extracts from Artemisia annua and Their Antioxidant, Enzyme Inhibitory and Anti-Inflammatory Properties

Acquaviva, Alessandra; Nilofar; Bouyahya, Abdelhakim; Zengin, Gokhan; Di Simone, Simonetta Cristina; Recinella, Lucia; Leone, Sheila; Brunetti, Luigi; Uba, Abdullahi Ibrahim; Cakilcioğlu, Ugur

Artemisia annua L. (Asteraceae Family) is an important plant in Asia that has been used for treating different diseases, including fever due to malaria, wounds, tubercolisis, scabues, pain, convulsions, diabetes, and inflammation. In this study we aimed to evaluate the effects of different polarity extracts (hexane, dichloromethane, ethyl acetate, ethanol, ethanol/water (70 %) and water) from A. annua against the burden of inflammation and oxidative stress occurring in colon tissue exposed to LPS. In parallel, chemical composition, antiradical, and enzyme inhibition effects against α-amylase, α-glucosidase, tyrosinase, and cholinesterases were evaluated. The water extract contained the highest content of the total phenolic with 34.59 mg gallic acid equivalent (GAE)/g extract, while the hexane had the highest content of the total flavonoid (20.06 mg rutin equivalent (RE)/g extract). In antioxidant assays, the polar extracts (ethanol, ethanol/water and water) exhibited stronger radical scavenging and reducing power abilities when compared to non-polar extracts. The hexane extract showed the best AChE, tyrosinase and glucosidase inhibitory effects. All extracts revealed effective anti-inflammatory agents, as demonstrated by the blunting effects on COX-2 and TNFα gene expression. These effects seemed to be not related to the only phenolic content. However, it is worthy of interest to highlight how the higher potency against LPS-induced gene expression was shown by the water extract; thus suggesting a potential phytotherapy application in the management of clinical symptoms related to inflammatory colon diseases, although future in vivo studies are needed to confirm such in vitro and ex vivo observations.

Investigation of Antimicrobial, Anti-Quorum Sensing, and Cytotoxic Activities of Flavonoids Isolated from Pulicaria armena Boiss. & Kotschy ex Boiss. (Asteraceae)

Başpınar, Yasemin; Gürbüz, Perihan; Dilem Doğan, Şengül; Gözde Gündüz, Miyase; Aleksic, Ivana; Vojnovic, Sandra; Nikodinovic-Runic, Jasmina; Yavuz Paksoy, Mehmet

This is the first report on the separation and biological assessment of all metabolites derived from Pulicaria armena (Asteraceae) which is an endemic species narrowly distributed in the eastern part of Turkey. The phytochemical analysis of P. armena resulted in the identification of one simple phenolic glucoside together with eight flavon and flavonol derivatives whose chemical structures were elucidated by NMR experiments and by the comparison of the spectral data with the relevant literature. The screening of all molecules for their antimicrobial, anti-quorum sensing, and cytotoxic activities revealed the biological potential of some of the isolated compounds. Additionally, quorum sensing inhibitory activity of quercetagetin 5,7,3’ trimethyl ether was supported by molecular docking studies in the active site of LasR which is the primary regulator of this cell-to-cell communication system in bacteria. Lastly, the critical molecular properties indicating drug-likeness of the compounds isolated from P. armena were predicted. As microbial infections can be a serious problem for cancer patients with compromised immune systems, this comprehensive phytochemical research on P. armena with its anti-quorum sensing and cytotoxic compounds can provide a new approach to the treatment.

Gohar; Saeed, Anwar; Alyami, Maryam Ahmed; Akkurt, Nevzat; Khan, Tahir Saeed; Gul, Taza

Researchers are interested in the thermophysical properties of nanofluids because of the successful use of nanofluids in state-of-the-art technology and engineering. Hence, hybrid and tri-hybrid nanofluid is used to ensure the required thermal features. An incompressible ternary hybrid nanofluid (NF) flow comprised of (Al2O3) aluminum oxide, (CuO) copper oxide, and (TiO2) titanium dioxide nanoparticles across an impermeable infinite spinning disc are addressed in the present study. The magnetic field and second-degree thermal radiation were used in the proposed model. The main aim of this assessment is to raise the consciousness of energy exhaustion in the industrial and technical sectors. The numerous applicability of ternary nanoparticles (NPs) make the proposed model more plausible, such as, Al2O3 has society-enhancing and life-extending applications, CuO has unique electrical, optical, and magnetic properties, while TiO2 is excessively used in plastic and paper production. For this purpose, the sensations have been expressed in the form of differential equations and the consequences are obtained using the homotopy analysis method (HAM). The graphics and statistical outcomes of the analytical simulation of the proposed model are reported through Figures and Tables.

Antibacterial activity of novel synthesized chitosan-graft-poly(N-tertiary butylacrylamide)/neodymium composites for biomedical application

Yazdıç, Ferit Can; Karaman, Altuğ; Torğut, Gülben; Ayhan, Nagihan Karaaslan

In this present study, composites of chitosan-graft-poly(N-tertiary butylacrylamide) (CH-graft-poly(N‑tert‑BAAm)) copolymer, with Neodymium (Nd), an important rare earth element, were prepared by precipitation technique. Nd was successfully incorporated into the polymer of different weight percentages (0.5%, 1%, and 2%) without any degradation. The effect of neodymium additives on the structural, morphological, and antibacterial activities against gram-positive bacteria and gram-negative bacteria of the polymer was analyzed using various instrument techniques. X-ray diffraction (XRD) results together with Fourier Transform Infrared (FT-IR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) studies confirmed the morphology of Nd-doped CH-graft-poly(N‑tert‑BAAm) composites without any other impurities. The antibacterial effect of Nd was studied by adding it to the copolymer in a weight ratio of 0.5%–2%. The antibacterial effect of neodymium concentration on four different strains of bacteria was investigated: Escherichia coli (ATCC 25922) (E. coli), Pseudomonas aeruginosa (DSM 50071) (P. aeruginosa), Bacillus subtilis (DSM 1971) (B. subtilis), and Staphylococcus aureus subsp. aureus (ATCC 25923) (S. aureus). The antibacterial activities of the obtained composites were determined using the Agar Well Diffusion Assay Method. Experimental results show that Nd binds well to CH-graft-poly(N‑tert‑BAAm). Activity against E. coli, P. aeruginosa, B. subtilis, and S. aureus subsp. aureus creates a potential for pharmaceutical and biomedical applications.

Numerical investigation of the effect of using louver baffles on thermal performance in solar air collectors

    Tuğan, Volkan; Işık, Erdem

Conventional flat plate solar air collectors have advantages such as low cost and simple design. However, their thermal efficiency is lower than that of other designs. The thermal efficiency of these collectors can be increased by detailed examination of parameters such as the shape, size, arrangement and material of the air duct. In this study, it is aimed to improve the thermal efficiency of solar air collectors. The effect of louver baffles, which were not previously used in solar air collectors, on thermal efficiency was investigated numerically via computational fluid dynamics. Three different solar air collectors with flat plates, segmented baffles, and louver baffles were compared in terms of thermal efficiency. In addition, pressure drops in solar air collectors were investigated. The mass flow rate of the air in all collectors is assumed to be 0.04 kg/s. Analyzes were carried out between 09:00 and 16:00. The thermal efficiency values obtained during the day for solar air collectors with flat plate, segmented baffles and louver baffles are 27.66%–56.35%, 29.57%–58.82% and 30.09%–59.47%, respectively. The daily thermal efficiency values obtained for solar air collectors with flat plate, segmented baffles and louver baffles are 46.98%, 49.18% and 49.87%, respectively. The pressure drop for solar air collectors with flat plate, segmented baffles and louver baffles were found to be 4.62, 18.82 and 5.96 Pa, respectively. Based on the data obtained from this study, louver baffles are recommended for use in solar heating applications due to their high thermal efficiency and low pressure drop.

A Selective and Sensitive Electrochemical Sensor for Pyridoxine Hydrochloride (Vitamin B6) in Pharmaceutic Tablet

    Koçak, Berna

In this study, a copper (II) oxide-glutardialdehyde modified boron doped diamond electrode was used as a sensor for the electroanalysis of pyridoxine hydrochloride (vitamin B6) for the first time. A copper oxide-glutardialdehyde modified boron doped diamond electrode (CuO-GA2/BDDE) was prepared by a simple drop casting method on boron diamond electrode (BDDE) by suspending CuO with glutardialdehyde (CuO-GA2). The electrochemical behavior of vitamin B6 was examined using cyclic voltammetry (CV) and its electrochemical determination was found by differential pulse voltammetry (DPV). Under optimum experimental conditions, the linear working range of vitamin B6 on CuO-GA2/BDDE via the DPV method was calculated as 5.96×10−6–3.75×10−4 mol.L−1. The limit of detection (LOD) was calculated as 1.99×10−7 mol.L−1. In order to demonstrate the selectivity of the method improved for the quantitative determination of vitamin B6 on the CuO-GA2/BDDE, the interference effect of some cations (Zn2+, Cu2+, Pb2+) and anions (NO3−, Cl−) was investigated via the DPV method. The improved electrode was successfully used for the electroanalysis of vitamin B6 in a tablet sample of the commercial Tribeksol® (deva) (250/250/1 mg B1+B6+B12).

Physiological peristaltic flow of Jeffrey fluid inside an elliptic cross section with heat and mass transfer: Exact solutions through Polynomial solution technique

Nadeem, Sohail; Akhtar, Salman; Akkurt, Nevzat; Saleem, Anber; Almutairi, Shahah; Ghazwani, Hassan Ali

An interpretation of heat and mass transfer for the peristaltic flow of a non-Newtonian Jeffrey fluid inside a duct having an elliptic cross-section is mathematically investigated. We have considered constant heat absorption for the present study and a descriptive heat as well as mass transfer analysis is carried out. Exact solutions are computed by utilizing a polynomial solution technique to solve the dimensionless partial differential equations appearing in the problem. A purposeful and detailed graphical assessment is provided for the final mathematical results. Velocity as well as temperature profiles attain highest value at the core region of duct while these profiles gradually decline toward duct boundaries. The incrementing value of λ1 is resulting in an increase of flow and since λ1 is the dimensionless ratio of relaxation to retardation time, it means that the increasing value of λ1 results in an increase of relaxation time but it also results in decline of retardation time.

Extracting low dimensional representations from large size whole slide images using deep convolutional autoencoders

    Çelik, Yusuf; Karabatak, Murat

Background and objective: Artificial intelligence-based analysis of medical images has recently become a trendy field of study. The most significant effect on these systems to produce reliable and high-performance results is the amount of accessed data. Although whole-slide images (WSI), one of the current imaging techniques used in histopathology, storage costs are very expensive. Therefore, low-dimensional visuals representing of WSIs is an essential field of study. Methods: In this study, deep auto-encoder-based models are designed to create low dimensional representations for WSI. The size reduction was performed for the input images in different sizes, at the ratios of 1: 3, 1: 6, and 1: 12, respectively. Results: Similarity index measure values were obtained as high as 0.957 and 0.938, respectively, using 128 × 128 × 3 dimensional patches in the size reduction process of 1: 3 and 1:12 on test WSI. Conclusion: The proposed model has a structure that can be applied in compression of WSIs and secure data transfer. By using these representations, both storage costs and the high-level hardware costs required by deep learning algorithms can be significantly reduced.

Greening Industrially Applied Toxic Cadmium Plating with γ-Ni2Zn11 Alloy in Deep Eutectic Solvents: Promising Electroplating Efficiency and Chemical Corrosion Resistance

    Cihangir, Salih

Cadmium is an industrially applied plating metal used in aerospace applications, but electrodeposition of cadmium is toxic, and current production method will soon be banned. Therefore, electrodeposition of alternative alloys in environmentally friendly solutions is an attractive research area. An additive-free, nonaqueous, deep eutectic solvent (DES) containing Ni and Zn halide salts is developed in a greener environmental method. Gamma-phase nanocrystalline Ni2Zn11 is coated onto hot-rolled mild steel via pulse reverse current (PRC) in the developed nonaqueous solvent. The employed DES’ relatively low viscosity and sufficient conductivity enable the simultaneous reduction of Ni2+ and Zn2+ cations on microelectrode. Electrochemical quartz crystal microbalance (eQCM) analysis proves the absence of the commonly reported problem of electrode blocking during electrodeposition, revealing an efficiency of 86.07%. Appropriate PRC parameters are applied for scaled macroelectrode deposition. The plating profile exhibits 20 μm-thick alloy deposition without cracks around 3 h. Scanning electron microscopy–electron-dispersive spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction analyses reveal that 15.5 wt% Ni is in the nanograin phase, and all crystal planes belong to the γ-Ni2Zn11 phase, which is needed as an alternative to cadmium plating. Hardness and corrosion tests performed on the γ-Ni2Zn11 coating reveal better hardness and corrosion resistance with supporting morphological evidence.

Genotoxic effect of iron oxide (Fe2O3) nanoparticles on Triticum aestivum (wheat)

    Tasar, Neslihan

Industrial activities and unconscious consumption of natural resources cause environmental pollution with the rapid increase in the world population. As a result of the widespread use of iron oxide nanoparticles (Fe2O3 NP) with nano-industrial activities, it is predicted that this NP will accumulate in the air, water, and soil. In the present study, the purpose was to find out the genotoxic effects on root meristem cells of the Triticum aestivum L. plant, which is an indicator organism exposed to 20–40 nm Fe2O3 NPs at different concentrations (100, 200, and 400 ppm). The amount of Fe2O3 NP accumulated in T. aestivum used in the study was determined with x-ray diffraction (XRD) spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), SEM element map, and EDS characteristic spectrum. All concentrations of Fe2O3 NP caused significant decreases in the mitotic index. Fe2O3 NPs significantly increased the frequency of mitotic abnormalities in T. aestivum root tip cells at all treatment times and all concentrations when compared to the control. Fe2O3 NPs were formed by various mitotic abnormalities such as loss of genetic material, deconstructed prophase, adhesion, chromosome groupings in metaphase, deconstructed metaphase, C-Metaphase, chromosomal loss, chromosomal fracture, polyploidy, deconstructed anaphase, lagging chromosome, fragment, polar deviation, bridging, propagation, asynchronous division, star anaphase, multipolarity, and deconstructed telophase. All these results show that Fe2O3 NPs are genotoxic and clastogenic and may also cause DNA damage. Briefly, these data show that Fe2O3 NPs taken by organisms may pose a danger to the organism and the upper consumer. These findings also show that the production and use of Fe2O3 NPs, which affect organisms, must be controlled, and ultimately, be safely disposed of to reduce their bioaccumulation. Research Highlights: In the present study, the purpose was to find out the genotoxic effects on root meristem cells of the Triticum aestivum L. (bread wheat) plant, which is an indicator organism exposed to 20–40 nm Fe2O3 NPs at different concentrations (100, 200, and 400 ppm). The amount of Fe2O3 NP accumulated in T. aestivum used in the study was determined with x-ray diffraction (XRD) spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), SEM element map, and EDS characteristic spectrum. The mitotic index was calculated to reveal the genotoxic effect. “Loss of genetic material, deconstructed prophase, adhesion, chromosome groupings in metaphase, deconstructed metaphase, C-Metaphase, chromosomal loss, chromosomal fracture, polyploidy, deconstructed anaphase, lagging chromosome, fragment, polar deviation, bridging, propagation, asynchronous division, star Chromosomal abnormalities such as anaphase, multipolarity, and deconstructed telophase” were visualized. Fe2O3 NPs are genotoxic and clastogenic and may also cause DNA damage.

Fabrication of hydroxyapatite-based nano-gold and nano-silver-doped bioceramic bone grafts: Enhanced mechanostructure, cell viability, and nuclear abnormality properties

    Demirel, M.; Aslan, N.; Aksakal, B.; Arslan, M.E.

In this study, nano-gold (nAu) and nano-silver (nAg) were doped at the molar ratios of Molar5–Molar30 to the Hydroxyapatite (HAp)-based bioceramic bone graft synthesized by the sol–gel method. The effects of nAu and nAg on structural, mechanical, cell viability, and nuclear abnormality of the synthesized bioceramic grafts were evaluated. The chemical and morphological properties of the bone grafts after production were examined through XRD and SEM–EDX analyses and mechanical tests. To determine the biocompatibility of the bone grafts, cell viability tests were performed using human fibroblast cells. In the cytotoxicity analyses, only HAp and HAp-nAu5 grafts did not show toxicological properties at any concentration, while HAp-nAg5 among the nAg-containing grafts gave the best results at the 200–100 μg/mL concentrations and showed significant cytotoxicity in human fibroblast cells. The other nAu-containing grafts showed toxicological properties in the concentration range of 200–50 μg/mL and nAg-containing grafts in the concentration range of 200–100 μg/mL against the negative control. The micronucleus (MN) analyses showed that the lowest total MN and L (lobbed) amounts, while the lowest total N (notched) amount, was obtained from the only HAp graft. It was found that the nAg-doped bone grafts gave higher total MN, L, and N amounts compared to the nAu-doped bone grafts. Furthermore, while the mean nuclear abnormality (NA) values of all grafts gave close results, the highest values were again obtained from the nAg-doped bone grafts.

Does surgery cause anxiety, stress and fear in geriatric patients?

Karabulut, Neziha; Gürçayır, Dilek; Abi, Özlem; Kızıloğlu Ağgül, Beyzanur; Söylemez, Nilgün

Background: Because of physiological changes in geriatric patients, their surgical process differs from that of young adults. In this regard, the perioperative period is an extremely risky time for geriatric patients. The present study examined preoperative fear, anxiety, and perceived stress levels as well as the factors affecting them in elderly patients prior to surgical intervention. Methods: This study adopted a cross-sectional descriptive design. The study sample consisted of geriatric patients (n = 407) scheduled for elective laparoscopic cholecystectomy in a research and training hospital in northeast Turkey. Data were collected by the researchers using the personal information form, Perceived Stress Scale (PSS-10), Surgical Fear Questionnaire (SFQ) and Anxiety Specific to Surgery Questionnaire (ASSQ). In the data analysis, descriptive statistics, the t-test in independent groups, one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA), correlation analysis and Bonferroni tests for post hoc analyses were used. Results: On the PSS–10, the mean score was higher for the 75-and-older age group, single patients, patients with a disease requiring medication, and those who had previously undergone surgery (P < 0.05). On the ASSQ, the mean score was lower for patients aged 65–69, university graduates, patients without children, and those without a disease requiring medication (P < 0.05). On the SFQ, the mean score was higher for the 75-and-older age group, primary school graduates, and single patients (P < 0.05). Conclusion: It was determined that being single, having a chronic disability, and advancing age had an effect on the patients' surgery-specific anxiety, perceived stress, and fear of surgery. Long-standing chronic diseases can negatively affect both stress and anxiety levels of individuals.

Deep learning based an effective hybrid model for water quality assessment

Utku, Anıl; Utku, Esen Damla; Kutlu, Banu

Water, which is very important for life and civilizations on Earth, has been a source of life for all living things. However, freshwater resources gradually decrease due to climate change, pollution, and population growth. Water pollution is the quality changes that occur due to various activities of people, change the chemical, biological, and physical properties of water, restrict or prevent its use, and disrupt ecological balances. The water quality criteria determined to keep this pollution under control ensure the safe use of water. Water quality observations have gained more importance today due to intense environmental concerns and water pollution. Preliminary assessment of health risks associated with consumption of grapevines contaminated with mining effluents in Turkey: Persistent trace elements and critical raw materials

Topal, Murat; Arslan Topal, E.Işıl; Öbek, Erdal

In this study, some persistent trace elements and critical raw materials were investigated in grapevines contaminated with Pb–Zn mining effluents. The persistent trace elements under certain conditions remain without any change in form in the environment over long periods. The critical raw materials are the ones that have economic importance and have the risks associated with their supply. The health risks of persistent trace elements and critical raw materials in the leaves of grapevine that are consumed by humans were determined. The highest persistent trace elements concentrations followed the order of root > stem > leaf for Mn, Cu, Cd, Ni, and Cr while root > leaf > stem for Zn and leaf > root > stem for Pb. The maximum critical raw material concentrations for Co and V followed the order of root > stem > leaf. For Sb and La, these were leaf > root > stem and root > stem > leaf, respectively. The maximum critical raw materials concentrations for W was leaf > stem = root. The total maximum carcinogenic value was 0.146 for Cd while the total minimum carcinogenic value was 0.0054 for Pb. In this study, potential carcinogenic risk values in terms of ingestion of contaminated soil (Cr, Cd, and Ni) and dietary take of grapevine leaves (Ni, Cr, Cd, and Pb) are higher than acceptable levels (1 × 10−4 – 1 × 10−6). Maximum cancer risk on human health was determined as dietary intake of grapevine leaves. When hazard quotient for dietary (HQdie), hazard quotient for ingestion (HQing), and hazard quotient for inhalation (HQinh) values of critical raw materials were examined, the maximum values were observed for children. Also, the highest hazard quotient for dermal (HQder) value was determined for men. The hazard index and total hazard index values were >1 for critical raw materials. As a result, values >1 indicated potential non-carcinogenic human health risk associated with the consumption of grapevines contaminated with mining effluents. Actual region-specific exposure estimates for consumption of grapevines, however, were not evaluated. Integr Environ Assess Manag 2022;18:517–527.

Integrated electron beam irradiation treatment with hydrogen peroxide aqueous solution to inactivate Salmonella on grape tomatoes

Omac, Basri; Moreira, Rosana G.; Castell-Perez, Elena M.

This study investigated the efficacy of integrated electron beam (e-beam) irradiation and hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) aqueous solution treatments to inactivate mixed strains of Salmonella inoculated in grape tomatoes. Whole grape tomatoes were inoculated with a mixed bacterial cocktail composed of five strains of Salmonella enterica corresponding to serotypes Rissen (SAL1449), Montevideo (SAL4599), Saintpaul (476398), and Typhimurium (ATCC 13311 and ATCC 700720), dried in a biological safety cabinet for 2 h at room temperature and then stored at 4°C for 24 h to facilitate bacterial attachment before treatment. Tomatoes in H2O2 (60 mg/L) aqueous solution were irradiated at 0.45, 0.60, 0.75, 1.0, and 1.25 kGy dose. The combined treatment of 1.0 kGy radiation dose and 60 mg/L H2O2 achieved 4-log reductions in Salmonella. The D10−average value of Salmonella in the present study was 0.25 ± 0.01 kGy. Regarding the effect of the treatment on tomato quality, the combined application of e-beam up to 1.25 kGy and H2O2 (60 mg/L) did not affect (p >.05) the color and texture of grape tomatoes compared to non-irradiated samples. Furthermore, the combined treatments of e-beam and H2O2 aqueous solution reduced the dose uniformity ratio (DUR) by 7%, a relevant finding regarding commercial applications of electron beam accelerators. Exposure of the tomatoes to e-beam and water wash with added H2O2 is a promising decontamination system for use in tomatoes and other produce processing. Further studies on the optimization of this integrated treatment are needed. Practical Applications: Electron beam irradiation of tomatoes immersed in hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) solution reduces the dose required to eliminate pathogens in the fresh produce. The integrated treatment ensures minimal changes to produce quality and increased treatment efficiency in terms of dose uniformity.

Structural characterization and oxidative stability of black cumin oil oleogels prepared with natural waxes

    Orhan, Necla Ozdemir; Eroglu, Zeynep

In this study, black cumin oil (BCO) oleogel was produced using natural waxes (beeswax: BW, sunflower wax: SFW, and carnauba wax: CW) to offer a healthy alternative to shortening. Oiling-off was observed only in the BW oleogel (3.88 ± 0.02%). The CW oleogel had the lowest Ea (354.82 kJ/mol), indicating greater resistance to thermal degradation. The highest G′ and G″ were observed in the CW oleogel, while the lowest was observed in the BW oleogel. All oleogel samples displayed weak gel properties (tan δ > 0.1), but the lowest tan δ value belonged to the CW oleogel (0.12). After 4 weeks of storage, the peroxide values of the oleogels were lower than those of bulk oil (p <.05). Finally, the oxidation results showed that the BCO structuring by the waxes effectively protected it from oxidation over eight weeks of storage. Novelty impact statement: The most important innovation of the present study was to investigate the effect of BCO oleogelation on the stability of thymoquinone, the main phenolic compound of BCO. The BCO oleogels had higher thymoquinone content during the first half of the storage period compared with bulk BCO, showing that the oleogel network provides a protective effect against oxidation and thermal degradation.
