Muezzinoglu, Taha; Baygin, Nursena; Tuncer, Ilknur; Barua, Prabal Datta; Baygin, Mehmet; Dogan, Sengul; Tuncer, Turker; Palmer, Elizabeth Emma; Cheong, Kang Hao; Acharya, U. Rajendra

Modern computer vision algorithms are based on convolutional neural networks (CNNs), and both end-to-end learning and transfer learning modes have been used with CNN for image classification. Thus, automated brain tumor classification models have been proposed by deploying CNNs to help medical professionals. Our primary objective is to increase the classification performance using CNN. Therefore, a patch-based deep feature engineering model has been proposed in this work. Nowadays, patch division techniques have been used to attain high classification performance, and variable-sized patches have achieved good results. In this work, we have used three types of patches of different sizes (32 × 32, 56 × 56, 112 × 112). Six feature vectors have been obtained using these patches and two layers of the pretrained ResNet50 (global average pooling and fully connected layers). In the feature selection phase, three selectors—neighborhood component analysis (NCA), Chi2, and ReliefF—have been used, and 18 final feature vectors have been obtained. By deploying k nearest neighbors (kNN), 18 results have been calculated. Iterative hard majority voting (IHMV) has been applied to compute the general classification accuracy of this framework. This model uses different patches, feature extractors (two layers of the ResNet50 have been utilized as feature extractors), and selectors, making this a framework that we have named PatchResNet. A public brain image dataset containing four classes (glioblastoma multiforme (GBM), meningioma, pituitary tumor, healthy) has been used to develop the proposed PatchResNet model. Our proposed PatchResNet attained 98.10% classification accuracy using the public brain tumor image dataset. The developed PatchResNet model obtained high classification accuracy and has the advantage of being a self-organized framework. Therefore, the proposed method can choose the best result validation prediction vectors and achieve high image classification performance.

The adverse physical, psychological, and mental health consequences associated with COVID-19 illness are well-documented. However, how specific symptoms change over time and how COVID-19 affects one’s day-to-day activities of daily living (ADL), Quality of Life (QoL), sleep quality, and fatigue severity are not well described. This longitudinal and descriptive study examined the changes in COVID-19 symptoms, ADL, QoL, sleep quality, and fatigue severity within the first 20 days. A convenience sample (n = 41) of non-hospitalized SARS-CoV-2 positive patients were recruited and followed for 20 days. Participants completed self-report measures: COVID-19 symptoms, ADL, QoL, sleep quality, and fatigue severity at days: 1, 10, and 20 following a diagnosis. Findings revealed that symptoms decreased over 20 days (p <.001). In parallel with the decrease in symptoms, QoL and ADL improved over 20 days (p <.05). However, sleep quality and fatigue severity did not improve within 20 days (p >.05). Our findings contribute to the growing evidence that COVID-19 symptoms can linger, especially fatigue and sleep quality, that affect overall day-to-day functioning for at least 20 days after diagnosis. To mitigate the effect of COVID-19 on QOL and ADL, findings underscore the need for clinicians to work collaboratively with patients to develop a symptom management plan for a variety of symptoms including fatigue and sleep quality. Beginning to repurpose existing self-management strategies for the longer term COVID-19 symptoms could be beneficial and help to optimize patient outcomes. Future work should examine these variables over a longer timeframe and among different samples of non-hospitalized patients.

A Fuzzy Hybrid MCDM Approach for Assessing the Emergency Department Performance during the COVID-19 Outbreak

    Ortíz-Barrios, Miguel; Jaramillo-Rueda, Natalia; Gul, Muhammet; Yucesan, Melih; Jiménez-Delgado, Genett; Alfaro-Saíz, Juan-José

The use of emergency departments (EDs) has increased during the COVID-19 outbreak, thereby evidencing the key role of these units in the overall response of healthcare systems to the current pandemic scenario. Nevertheless, several disruptions have emerged in the practical scenario including low throughput, overcrowding, and extended waiting times. Therefore, there is a need to develop strategies for upgrading the response of these units against the current pandemic. Given the above, this paper presents a hybrid fuzzy multicriteria decision-making model (MCDM) to evaluate the performance of EDs and create focused improvement interventions. First, the intuitionistic fuzzy analytic hierarchy process (IF-AHP) technique is used to estimate the relative priorities of criteria and sub-criteria considering uncertainty. Then, the intuitionistic fuzzy decision making trial and evaluation laboratory (IF-DEMATEL) is employed to calculate the interdependence and feedback between criteria and sub-criteria under uncertainty, Finally, the combined compromise solution (CoCoSo) is implemented to rank the EDs and detect their weaknesses to device suitable improvement plans. The aforementioned methodology was validated in three emergency centers in Turkey. The results revealed that the most important criterion in ED performance was ER facilities (14.4%), while Procedures and protocols evidenced the highest positive D + R value (18.239) among the dispatchers and is therefore deemed as the main generator within the performance network.

Seasonal monitoring of microbial activity using conventional approaches in a full-scale urban biological wastewater treatment plant

Demirbilek, Deniz; İpek, Ubeyde; Yetis, Ulku

Activated sludge processes contain various groups of microorganisms with different metabolic properties, which are responsible for contaminants removal. Therefore, it is important to elucidate the general structure and functional properties of biomass in activated sludge processes. For this purpose, a full-scale domestic biological wastewater treatment plant in Tunceli (Turkey), Tunceli WWTP (wastewater treatment plant), was monitored to observe seasonal variations in process performance and biomass properties for a year. It was observed that nitrifying bacteria developed abundantly in the rainy and cool spring season as they were suppressed in summer because their large losses took place due to an environment containing high alkalinity values. In September, aerobic heterotrophic, nitrify, denitrify, and anaerobic activities increased. It can be said that the biomass contained young and mature microorganism in this environment in which the sludge volume index (SVI) value increased to 196 mL/g. As a result of the improvement in the structural and functional properties of biomass, the nitrogen removal efficiency reached 99%. Throughout the whole study, the structural improvement observed in biomass was reflected in its removal activity. The amount of biomass and removal activity decreased with the abundance of organic matter in the influent at the period in which biomass was closer to being categorized in the aged sludge class. The results showed that as the lowest mixed liquid suspended solids (MLSS) and mixed liquid volatile suspended solids (MLVSS) values of the year were 530 and 400 mg/L, respectively, in November 2017, MLSS and MLVSS values reached the highest amount (1700 and 1400 mg/L, respectively) in December 2017 when aerobic heterotrophic activity accelerated with a decrease in organic matter level.

Utku, Anıl; Utku, Esen Damla; Kutlu, Banu

Water, which is very important for life and civilizations on Earth, has been a source of life for all living things. However, freshwater resources gradually decrease due to climate change, pollution, and population growth. Water pollution is the quality changes that occur due to various activities of people, change the chemical, biological, and physical properties of water, restrict or prevent its use, and disrupt ecological balances. The water quality criteria determined to keep this pollution under control ensure the safe use of water. Water quality observations have gained more importance today due to intense environmental concerns and water pollution. This situation revealed the necessity of water quality assessment for water source use. In this study, the CNN-LSTM-based hybrid model was proposed to assess water quality. The proposed model was compared with AdaBoost, DT, GNB, kNN, LGBM, RF, and LSTM according to accuracy, precision, recall, F-score, and AUC. The proposed model has 98.81% accuracy, 99.03% precision, 99.65% recall, 99.33% F-score, and 93% AUC. Practitioner Points: CNN-LSTM hybrid model was developed to water quality assessment. The proposed model is compared with established techniques like AdaBoost, DT, GNB, kNN, LGBM, RF, and LSTM. The developed model has 98.81% classification accuracy. Experimental results show that the developed model will ensure the use of safe water according to water quality criteria.

Effect of chlorpyrifos on some biochemical changes in Cyprinus carpio: the protective effect of ellagic acid

Mişe Yonar, Serpil; Yonar, Muhammet Enis; Ural, Mevlüt Şener; Pala, Ayşegül

In this study, ameliorative effects of ellagic acid (EA) on oxidative stress induced by chlorpyrifos (CPF) in carp, Cyprinus carpio, were investigated. Fish were divided into six groups: C (no treatment), EA (100 mg kg fish−1), CPF-1 (0.040 mg L−1), CPF-2 (0.080 mg L−1), CPF-1 + EA, and CPF-2 + EA. CPF and EA were applied simultaneously for 14 days and, at the end of the study, liver, kidney, and gill samples were collected from fish. On the taken tissue samples, malondialdehyde (MDA) level and some antioxidant enzyme (superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), glutathione peroxidase (GPx), and glutathione-S-transferase (GST)) activities were evaluated. The results demonstrated statistically significant increases in the MDA levels of the CPF-1 and CPF-2 groups. On the other hand, the MDA levels were significantly decreased by EA administration. Also, CPF exposure caused statistically significant increases in the SOD and GST activities and statistically significant decreases in the CAT and GPx activities. However, treatment with EA reversed negative alterations in the SOD, CAT, GPx, and GST activities. Therefore, the results of this study results showed that simultaneous treatment with EA alleviates CPF-induced oxidative stress in fish.

Experimental and material characterization of composites, including waste iron and marble powder

    Gülmez, Nihan

Due to its fine particle size, waste marble slurry originating in cutting and processing units mixes into the air after drying, causing environmental and health problems in nearby areas. On the other hand, large amounts of iron particles are generated as metalworking industry waste, affecting the environmental system. In this study, 0%, 10%, and 20% marble powder (instead of cement) and iron particles (instead of fine aggregate) were used in mixtures, and the composites produced were subjected to two different curing periods: 7 and 28 days. The physical, mechanical, microstructural, and thermal properties of the fresh and hardened composites were ascertained via bulk density, consistency, porosity, water absorption, capillary water absorption, strength tests, particle size distribution, X-ray diffraction (XRF), X-ray fluorescence (XRF), scanning electron microscopy and energy dispersive spectroscopy (SEM–EDS), and thermogravimetric analyses (TGA). The results revealed that minimum water absorption (8.5%) and porosity (19.8%) values were achieved in 28-day composites produced with 10% marble–20% iron wastes among all composites. Thus, iron particles substituted for natural aggregates were mainly responsible for the increase in mechanical performance. A maximum flexural strength of 5.9 MPa and a compressive strength of 26.7 MPa were observed in 28-day composites containing 0% marble–20% iron wastes. Furthermore, capillary water absorption tended to decrease with the substitution of 10% marble powder.

Preliminary assessment of health risks associated with consumption of grapevines contaminated with mining effluents in Turkey: Persistent trace elements and critical raw materials

Topal, Murat; Arslan Topal, E.Işıl; Öbek, Erdal

In this study, some persistent trace elements and critical raw materials were investigated in grapevines contaminated with Pb–Zn mining effluents. The persistent trace elements under certain conditions remain without any change in form in the environment over long periods. The critical raw materials are the ones that have economic importance and have the risks associated with their supply. The health risks of persistent trace elements and critical raw materials in the leaves of grapevine that are consumed by humans were determined. The highest persistent trace elements concentrations followed the order of root > stem > leaf for Mn, Cu, Cd, Ni, and Cr while root > leaf > stem for Zn and leaf > root > stem for Pb. The maximum critical raw material concentrations for Co and V followed the order of root > stem > leaf. For Sb and La, these were leaf > root > stem and root > stem > leaf, respectively. The maximum critical raw materials concentrations for W was leaf > stem = root. The total maximum carcinogenic value was 0.146 for Cd while the total minimum carcinogenic value was 0.0054 for Pb. In this study, potential carcinogenic risk values in terms of ingestion of contaminated soil (Cr, Cd, and Ni) and dietary take of grapevine leaves (Ni, Cr, Cd, and Pb) are higher than acceptable levels (1 × 10−4 – 1 × 10−6). Maximum cancer risk on human health was determined as dietary intake of grapevine leaves. When hazard quotient for dietary (HQdie), hazard quotient for ingestion (HQing), and hazard quotient for inhalation (HQinh) values of critical raw materials were examined, the maximum values were observed for children. Also, the highest hazard quotient for dermal (HQder) value was determined for men. The hazard index and total hazard index values were >1 for critical raw materials. As a result, values >1 indicated potential non-carcinogenic human health risk associated with the consumption of grapevines contaminated with mining effluents. Actual region-specific exposure estimates for consumption of grapevines, however, were not evaluated. Integr Environ Assess Manag 2022;18:517–527.

A Bayesian BWM and VIKOR-based model for assessing hospital preparedness in the face of disasters

Saner, Halit Serdar; Yucesan, Melih; Gul, Muhammet

Hospitals are the first point of contact for people in the face of disasters that interfere with the daily functioning of life and endanger health and social life. All preparations should be made considering the worst possible conditions and the provided service should continue without interruption. In this study, a multi-criteria decision-making model was developed to evaluate disaster preparedness of hospitals. This decision model includes Bayesian best–worst method (BBWM), the VlseKriterijumska Optimizacija I Kompromisno Resenje (VIKOR) and technique for order preference by similarity to ideal solution (TOPSIS) methods. With the proposed decision model, six main criteria and 34 sub-criteria related to disaster preparedness of hospitals were considered. The criteria and sub-criteria evaluated in pairwise comparison manner by the experts were weighted with BBWM. These weight values and the data obtained from the six Turkish hospitals were combined to provide inputs for VIKOR and TOPSIS. In addition, a comparative study and sensitivity analysis were carried out using weight vectors obtained by different tools. BBWM application results show that the “Personnel” criterion was determined as the most important criterion with an importance value of 26%. This criterion is followed by “Equipment” with 25%, “Transportation” with 14%, “Hospital building” and “Communication” with 12%, and “Flexibility” with 11%. Hospital-2 was determined as the most prepared hospital for disasters as a result of VIKOR application. The VIKOR Q value of this hospital was obtained as 0.000. According to the results of the comparative study, Hospital-2 was determined as the most disaster-ready hospital in all six different scenarios. This hospital is followed by Hospital-4 (Q = 0.5661) and Hospital-5 (Q = 0.7464). The remaining rankings were Hospital-6, Hospital-3 and Hospital-1. The solidity of the results was checked with TOPSIS. Based on TOPSIS application results, Hospital-2 was again found the most-ready hospital. The usage of BBWM in this study enabled the expert group’s views to be combined without loss of information and to determine the criteria and sub-criteria weights with less pairwise comparisons in a probabilistic perspective. Via the “Credal ranking”, which is the contribution of BBWM to the literature, the interpretation of the hierarchy between each criterion has been performed more precisely.

Electrochemical Detection of Ivermectin Used for the Treatment of COVID-19 with Glutardialdehyde-Modified Glassy Carbon Electrode

    Koçak, Berna; İpek, Yeliz

In this study, the surface of the glassy carbon electrode was modified with glutardialdehyde. The modified glassy carbon electrode showed electrocatalytic activity against ivermectin. The glassy carbon electrode modified with glutardialdehyde showed high sensitivity, selectivity, and stability in the determination of ivermectin. The peak current of glutardialdehyde oxidation obtained by differential pulse voltammetry decreased inversely with the ivermectin concentration. Ivermectin inhibited the oxidation reaction of glutardialdehyde and caused a decrease in current. This change made the analysis of ivermectin electrochemically possible. In order to demonstrate the applicability of the developed method in real samples, recovery studies were carried out in tap water and urine. The highest sensitivity (0.45 µA/((µmol·L−1)(cm2))) was achieved with urine sample and the lowest detection limit as 2.66 × 10−6 mol·L−1 was obtained with BRT solution sample. Comparative Content, Biological and Anticancer Activities of Heracleum humile Extracts Obtained by Ultrasound-Assisted Extraction Method

Ocal, Mustafa; Altunoglu, Yasemin Celik; Angeloni, Simone; Mustafa, Ahmed M.; Caprioli, Giovanni; Zengin, Gokhan; Paksoy, Mehmet Yavuz; Baloglu, Mehmet Cengiz

As the safety and effectiveness of synthetic drugs remain in doubt, researchers are trying to develop natural medicines from medicinal plants. Herein, ethyl acetate, methanol and water extracts from the Heracleum humile plant were obtained by an ultrasonic-assisted extraction process and the aim was to evaluate some biological effects of the extracts due to the limited data on the pharmacological properties of Heracleum humile in the literature. Weak antibacterial activity was observed on tested bacterial species. The minimum inhibitory concentration and the minimum bactericidal concentration values ranged from 250 to 500 μg/mL. In addition, cytotoxic activity was determined using the MTT test. The strongest findings were determined for ethyl acetate extract on the MDA-MB-231 cell lines at the 48th hour (IC50:97.94 μg/mL), followed by the MCF-7 cell lines at the 24th hour (IC50:103.9 μg/mL). All extracts of Heracleum humile contained mainly flavonoids, phenolic acids and their derivatives, i. e., well-known compounds that possess numerous biological activities such as antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, anticancer, antimicrobial etc. The study results could provide important information that Heracleum humile could be a potential candidate as a natural enzyme inhibitor. It can be concluded that these extracts could be useful in the elementary step of improving novel plant-derived multifunctional pharmaceuticals.

Boron-incorporated biocomposite coatings on 316L and NiTi alloys: Enhanced structural, antibacterial activity, and cell viability performances

    Aslan, N.; Aksakal, B.; Aksoy, M.E.

Boron doped (5 %, 10%, and 15 wt.%) Hydroxyapatite (B-HA) biocomposites were syntesized and coated on 316L SS and NiTi (Ni-45Ti) metallic substrates by using the electrophoretic deposition process (EPD). The morphological and structural characterization of the coatings was executed using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and X-ray diffraction devices (XRD). Antibacterial tests were conducted using Escherichia coli (E. coli, JM103) and Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus, ATCC29293) microorganisms. The mitochondrial activity assay (MTT)-[3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide] was used to examine cell viability and cytotoxicity in Saos-2 osteoblast cells. HA and boron peaks, as well as B-TCP and metallic components, were detected in XRD examinations. Porous morphologies were generated on the surface with boron doped B-HA coatings, as revealed by SEM views. Antibacterial activity studies revealed that both metallic coating groups, notably with boron doping, demonstrated antibacterial activity against gram-negative E. coli and gram-positive S. aureus. The antibacterial activity of the 316L group was shown to be better than that of the NiTi group in comparisonal testing. The syntesized boron-doped biocomposite coatings did not have any detrimental effects on living cells, according to cell viability studies. The cell viability rate was found to be greater in NiTi coatings than in 316 SS coatings, and the impact was amplified by the addition of boron.

Medical waste management during coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic at the city level

    Polat, E.G.

Coronavirus disease 2019 brings about the economic damage and loss of life. Thus, demand of personal protective equipment continues to increase, consequently an increase in infectious equipment pollution. Most of these wastes threaten the environment and increase the spread of diseases. This paper provides a research hypothesis whether effective medical waste management would prevent the possible impacts of coronavirus disease 2019-related waste issues on environment at the city level. To confirm this hypothesis, installation of waste treatment centre is addressed. Then, by incorporating uncertain waste generation amounts utilizing Jimenez method, a pickup routing is addressed to decide the pickup routes between the waste treatment centre and residential area. This study is first to assign the optimistic, realistic and pessimistic scenarios of the uncertain waste generation using time series analysis method and waste generation formulation. Also, L-type matrix is used to define, assess and prioritize the environmental and operational risks on waste generation formulation and to provide risk reaction strategies. Practicality of these approaches is illustrated in the case of Turkey. The computational results reveal the effectiveness of the integrated method, which ensures practical and theoretical insights controlling the waste generation to prevent virus propagation for health authorities.

A fuzzy hybrid decision-making framework for increasing the hospital disaster preparedness: The colombian case

Ortiz-Barrios, Miguel; Gul, Muhammet; Yucesan, Melih; Alfaro-Sarmiento, Isaac; Navarro-Jiménez, Eduardo; Jiménez-Delgado, Genett

The recent increase in the number of disasters over the world has once again brought to the agenda the question of preparedness of the hospitals, which are the most necessary units of healthcare pillar to resist these disasters. The COVID-19 epidemic disease, which has affected the whole world, has caused a large number of people to die in some countries simply because of the inadequate and incomplete planning and lack of readiness of hospitals. For this reason, determining the disaster preparedness level of hospitals is an important issue that needs to be studied and it is important in terms of disaster damage reduction. In this study, a fuzzy hybrid decision-making framework is proposed to assess hospital disaster preparedness. The framework covers three important decision-making methods. For the first phase, Intuitionistic Fuzzy Analytic Hierarchy Process (IF-AHP) is used to assign relative weights for several disaster preparedness criteria considering uncertainty. Secondly, Intuitionistic Fuzzy Decision Making Trial and Evaluation Laboratory (IF-DEMATEL) is applied to identify interrelations among these criteria and feedback. Finally, via the VlseKriterijumska Optimizacija I Kompromisno Resenje (VIKOR) method, priorities of hospitals regarding disaster readiness are obtained. A case study involving the participation of 10 Colombian tertiary hospitals is carried out to show the applicability of this fuzzy hybrid approach.

Ascorbic acid ameliorated the sperm quality of rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) against arsenic toxicity: Impact on oxidative stress, fertility ability and embryo development

Kocabaş, Filiz Kutluyer; Kocabaş, Mehmet; Aksu, Önder; Çakir Sahilli, Yeliz

Arsenic (As) is a heavy metal and aquatic pollutant and adversely impacts the reproduction of male fish. As a chain-breaking antioxidant, ascorbic acid (AA) has high water solubility and low toxicity. In this context, the current study was performed to assess the protective role of AA (1 mM) on the sperm cells of the rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) exposed to sublethal concentrations of As (8, 16 and 32 mg/L). Sperm quality parameters were analyzed using a sperm class analyzer system. Lipid peroxidation and antioxidant enzyme levels were used as indicators of oxidative stress. The fertilization, eyeing and hatching rates were determined as gamete markers. Reduced sperm quality parameters and fertility capacity resulted from in vitro exposure to As (P < 0.05). The oxidative stress in sperm cells increased after As exposure (P < 0.05). The presence of AA improved sperm movement parameters and fertility potential (P < 0.05). The potential human health risks of some toxic/harmful elements related to the consumption of Pseudevernia furfuracea (L.) Zopf. were investigated. The toxic/harmful elements (cadmium (Cd), chromium (Cr), copper (Cu), lead (Pb), manganese (Mn), nickel (Ni), and zinc (Zn)) were determined in P. furfuracea. According to the analysis result, the maximum (max.) toxic/harmful element value was 62 ± 3.1 mg/kg for Mn and minimum (min.) value was 0.19 ± 0.01 mg/kg for Cd. The estimated daily exposure doses (EDEXDs) for men, women and children were dietary (bread) > dietary (tea) > dermal. For dietary (bread) and dietary (tea) non-carcinogenic (HQ) risk was children > women > men. For dermal, HQ risk was women > children > men. Hazard index (HI) value for men was >1 for Cr. HI value for men was 1.36 for Cr. HI value for women was >1 for Cr and Mn. HI values for women were 1.54 for Cr and 1.01 for Mn. Also, the HI value for children was >1 for Cr, Mn, and Pb. HI values for children were 3.44 for Cr, 2.24 for Mn, and 1.66 for Pb. This situation showed that there was a non-carcinogenic risk. Carcinogenic risk values were dietary (bread) > dietary (tea) > dermal. The total max. carcinogenic value was 1.97E-03 for Cr while the total min. carcinogenic value was 1.31E-05 for Pb. As a result, it has been determined that there may be a risk of cancer due to the consumption of lichen as bread and this situation may adversely affect human health.
