Spatial dispersion hot spots of contamination and human health risk assessments of PTEs in surface sediments of streams around porphyry copper mine, Iran

Ipek, Yeliz; Kocak, Berna; Moussavi-Harami, Reza; Zand-Moghadam, Hamed; Mahboubi, Asadollah; Tohidi, Mohammad Reza

This comprehensive research has been conducted to consider the distribution of PTEs in the surface sediments of a recently developed Dar-e-Allo copper mine in dependence on the potential ecological and human health risks. Field sampling was carried out discreetly at preselected sampling spots including the natural background, the streams around the mine, waste rock drainages, evaporative deposits, sediments containing Fe oxy-hydroxides and secondary phases. Distribution of target elements (Al, As, Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Fe, Mn, Mo, Ni, Pb, S, Sb, Se, and Zn) showed high levels of crustal elements. As regards, Fe, Al, and S are identified to exist as the most copious elements in the earth's crust, so have the major portion of potentially toxic elements (PTEs) in the sediment concentrations. Evaluating environmental indices reflected that in general, Cu, S, and Mo have a higher quota of contamination in sedimentary systems. the pollution load index (PLI), modified contamination degree (mCd), Contamination factor (C-f), Sediment potential index (SPI), Geo-accumulation index (I-geo) and Contamination degree (C-d) confirm that sedimentary systems of mining area are heavily contaminated by PTEs and were not found within the guideline acceptable values. The potential ecological risk index (PERI) displayed a high or severe risk level for Cu with a peak in green-blue sediments containing secondary minerals. The results of total carcinogenic risk (TCRs) show that As has high toxicity level and carries a risk of carcinogenicity among children and adults. The TCRs for Cd, Cr, Ni, and Pb with carcinogenic potential are found only in children and they are classified as the prime concern elements that have serious dangers to children's public health. The results of contamination source presumed that the sources of PTEs contamination were principally geogenic along with the anthropogenic sources in the study area. Therefore, the present study has highlighted the implication of human health risks of PTEs in sedimentary systems of copper mining, also will grant advice for prime stakeholders, including mine managers, Environmental Protection Agency, the government and public organizations in connection to protecting the environment, aquatic biota and consumer's health.

Volatility Spillover, Hedging and Portfolio Diversification Between Oil Market and S&P Sectoral Indices

Gençyürek, Ahmet Galip; Ekinci, Ramazan; Agan, Busra

The study aims to analyze the volatility spillover between the oil market (WTI) and the S&P (Stand and Poor's) Energy, Financial, and Industry sector indices through conditional correlation and variance causality. The DCC-GARCH (Dynamic Conditional Correlation-Generalized Autoregressive Conditional Heteroscedasticity) and Hafner-Herwartz (2006) Variance Causality models were used to analyze the daily data for the period between January 3, 2012 and December 31, 2019. The results indicate a positive time-var ying conditional correlation between the oil market and sector indices. In addition, the hedge ratios and risk-minimizing portfolio weights (which are vital for investors) have been calculated based on these data. The cheapest hedging transaction with the oil market occurs in the financial sector, while the most expensive one occurs in the energy sector. It has also been determined that volatility is transmitted from the sector indices to the oil market. This situation means that the S&P sector indices play a leading role (resource of information-emit information) in volatility spillover. The results provide important information to researchers, investors, and policymakers.

Genç, Harun; Ceviz, Ebru; Kizar, Oktay; Dinçer, Kadriye

Background and Study Aim Material and Methods Understanding the impact of swimming exercises on post-Covid-19 respiratory function is crucial for optimizing recovery strategies in affected individuals. The aim of this study is to determine the effect of 8-week swimming exercises on respiratory function parameters in adult individuals who have had Covid-19 disease. Sixteen male students, aged 19-21, voluntarily participated in the study. Eight participants were assigned to the experimental group (EG), and eight to the control group (CG), all of whom were students of the Faculty of Sports Sciences at the University. The EG underwent an 8-week swimming exercise program conducted at the Bingol Youth and Sports swimming pool (25 meters), three days a week. The CG was not involved in any exercise regimen. Pulmonary function tests (FVC, FEV1, FEV1/FVC, PEF) were conducted using a Cosmed Pony FXdel 2016 spirometer, one day before and one day after the exercise program for both EG and CG. Data analysis was performed using Independent Samples and Paired Samples T tests in SPSS 25, with a significance level set at p < 0.05. Results A statistically significant increase in respiratory FVC, FEV1, FEV1/FVC, and PEF function values was observed in the experimental group (EG) after the exercise intervention (p < 0.05). This increase was observed when comparing these values to their pre-exercise measurements. In contrast, there was no statistically significant difference in respiratory function results before and after exercise in the control group (CG) (p > 0.05). Conclusions The findings of this study highlight the therapeutic potential of an 8-week swimming exercise program in significantly enhancing respiratory function among adult individuals who have previously contracted Covid-19. These results offer valuable insights for the development of post-Covid-19 rehabilitation protocols, emphasizing the importance of regular exercise, such as swimming, in the recovery process.

Akbaba, Emel; Aydın, Sevinç; Sanyürek, Nesrin Karaca; Çakır, Atilla; Erişir, Figen Erdem

Grapevine (Vitis vinifera L.) is regarded as one of the world’s most important fruit crops in terms of acreage and commercial worth. Grapes are used to make not only wine but also fresh fruit, dried fruit, and juice. The quality of grapes or wine is significantly affected by environmental factors such as altitude, soil type, and climate. In this study, the 5 white grape varieties (Ağın beyazı, Tahannebi, Kabarcık, Şilfoni, and Besni) grown at different altitudes (800 m, 1000 m and 1200 m) in Turkey were investigated for their vitamin, and phytosterol concentrations as well as lipid peroxidation content. Şilfoni grape harvested at 800 m was found to possess the lowest lipid peroxidation content. High altitudes, were found to reduce lipid peroxidation contents in the Ağın beyazı, Tahannebi, and Kabarcık strains. The highest stigmasterol (98.34 μg/g), and beta-sitosterol (86.90 μg/g) concentrations were found within Şilfoni grape variety harvested at 800 m. The highest vitamin D-2 and D-3 levels were found in Ağın beyazı (1.39 μg/g) and Kabarcık (4.13 μg/g) grape varieties, both harvested at 1200 m. Kabarcık grape, however, revealed the highest concentrations of R-tocopherol (63.09 μg/g) and alpha-tocopherol (24.13 μg/g) at 1200 m within the samples. The highest vitamin K-2 level was determined within the Tahannebi grape (15.44 μg/g) from 1200 m. It was observed that the vitamin and phytosterol concentrations of white grape varieties tended to increase, while the lipid peroxidation values tended to decrease at high altitudes, especially at 1200 m. This study also exhibited a strong relationship among Vitamin D3, R-tocopherol, and alpha-tocopherol in the studied white grape cultivars.

Investigation of issues affecting thermal comfort in water system underfloor heating applications of buildings with Bayesian networks

Erkol, Samet; Yücesan, Melih; Gül, Muhammet; Güneri, Ali Fuat

Thermal comfort is related to the stability of the ambient temperature. Constant changes in ambient temperature appear as a situation that negatively affects comfort. The selected building systems must be arranged to maintain this stability for the continuity of thermal comfort. In this study, issues affecting thermal comfort in water system underfloor heating applications of buildings are handled and analyzed using the Bayesian Network modeling methodology. Visual examples of the problems encountered in field applications are also given. Three different scenarios are tested with the constructed Bayesian Network model. In the first scenario, assumed that mechanical project failures were prevented. In this case, it was observed that the failure rate decreased by about 5%. In the second scenario, assumed that mechanical application failures are prevented along with mechanical project failures. The failure rate decreased by 11% compared to the first situation. The third scenario assumed that the mechanical project preparation phase was concluded without any problems, the mechanical project was implemented without any failures, and the mechanical system was commissioned without any problems. In the last scenario, the failure rate decreased by 14% compared to the first case, and the probability of not providing thermal comfort remained at 2%. As a result of these three scenarios, the possibility of not providing thermal comfort in the underfloor heating system is detailed and interpreted.

COVID-19 safe campus evaluation for universities by a hybrid interval type-2 fuzzy decision-making model

Baskak, Dilber; Ozbey, Sumeyye; Yucesan, Melih; Gul, Muhammet

The fight against the COVID-19 pandemic, which has affected the whole world in recent years and has had devastating effects on all segments of society, has been one of the most important priorities. The Turkish Standards Institution has determined a checklist to contribute to developing safe and clean environments in higher education institutions in Turkey and to follow-up on infection control measures. However, this study is only a checklist that makes it necessary for decision-makers to make a subjective evaluation during the evaluation process, while the need to develop a more effective, systematic framework that takes into account the importance levels of multiple criteria has emerged. Therefore, this study applies the best-worst method under interval type-2 fuzzy set concept (IT2F-BWM) to determine the importance levels of criteria affecting the “COVID-19 safe campus” evaluation of universities in the context of global pandemic. A three-level hierarchy consisting of three main criteria, 11 sub-criteria, and 58 sub-criteria has been created for this aim. Considering the hierarchy, the most important sub-criterion was determined as periodic disinfection. The high contribution of the interval-valued type-2 fuzzy sets in expressing the uncertainty in the decision-makers’ evaluations and the fact that BWM provides criterion weights with a mathematical optimization model that produces less pairwise comparisons and higher consistency are the main factors in choosing this approach. Simple additive weighting (SAW) has also been injected into the IT2F-BWM to determine the safety level of any university campus regarding COVID-19. Thus, decision-makers will be better prepared for the devastating effects of the pandemic by first improving the factors that are relatively important in the fight against the pandemic. In addition, a threshold value will be determined by considering all criteria, and it will prepare the ground for a road map for campuses. A case study is employed to apply the proposed model, and a comparison study is also presented with the Bayesian BWM to validate the results of the criteria weights.

The epiphytic bryophyte succession of Buxus sempervirens forests in the Fırtına Valley, Rize (North Türkiye)

Ezer, Tülay; Alataş, Mevlüt; Batan, Nevzat; Erata, Hüseyin

In this study, the epiphytic bryophyte succession of the Buxus sempervirens L. forests in Fırtına Valley (Çamlıhemşin-Rize, North Türkiye), one of the nine biodiversity hotspots in Türkiye, was investigated. For this pur-pose, a total of 60 sampling plots were taken from the live trunks of B. sempervirens trees of different ages. Twenty-nine epiphytic bryophyte species were determined (24 mosses and 5 liverworts) within the sample plots. Also, six different life form types and four different habitat affinity categories were determined. Among them, the mat type life form is in first place with 34.4% and the cortico-saxicolous species are the most common with 51.7%. Two-way indicator species analysis (TWINSPAN) classified the epiphytic bryophyte communities on B. sempervirens trunks at the second level into two main clusters (A and B) and three sub-clusters (A1, B1 and, B2). Detrended correspondence analysis (DCA) axis 1 was interpreted as gradient along the height of the epiphytic habitat (from the lower base to the upper zone) on trunks and the DCA axis 2 was interpreted as gradient of moisture (from mesic to xeric). Exsertotheca crispa (Hedw.) S. Olsson, Enroth & D. Quandt was the species with the highest index of ecological significance (IES) value on the lower bases of the aged trees. Species diversity and epiphytic cover in the upper zones were lower than in the basal and middle zones in the study area. While Metzgeria furcata, (L.) Corda, Oxyrrhynchium hians (Hedw.) Loeske, Plagiothecium nemorale (Mitt.) A.Jaeger, and Radula lindenbergiana Gottsche ex C.Hartm were only found on old trees, Ctenidium molluscum (Hedw.) Mitt. and Pseudoleskeella nervosa (Brid.) Nyholm were only found on middle-aged trees.

The Effect of the Health Literacy Levels of Teachers on Their Vaccine Hesitancy: The Example of Turkey

    Yeşiltepe, Akgün; Çal, Ayşe

Teachers assume important responsibilities in improving the health literacy levels of the society. Health literacy and vaccination are important prerequisites for health protection and promotion. This study aimed to investigate the effect of teachers’ health literacy levels on their vaccine hesitancy. This is a descriptive cross-sectional study. The health literacy and vaccine hesitancy levels of the teachers were found to be moderate. A negative and weak significant relationship was observed between health literacy and vaccine hesitancy, indicating that as health literacy increases, vaccine hesitancy may decrease. In addition, it was revealed that general health perception and over-the-counter drug use are associated with health literacy, and age, income status, and place of residence are associated with vaccine hesitancy. The health literacy and vaccine hesitancy levels of teachers should be improved. As health literacy increases, vaccine hesitancy decreases, which is an important finding in terms of increasing the effectiveness of vaccination programs.

The effect of crest shape on discharge coefficient at linear weirs; [Utjecaj oblika krune na koeficijent prelijevanja linearnih preljeva]

    Dogan, Yusuf; Kaya, Nihat

A detailed experimental laboratory analysis of the effect of crest shape on the discharge coefficient of sharp-crested weirs is presented in the paper. The experiments were conducted for four different crest shapes. The experiments and analyses show that discharge capacity, and discharge coefficient in particular, are significantly affected by weir crest height. It is stated in conclusion that rounded crest shape has the highest discharge capacity. In practice, sharp crested weirs are generally preferred to other crest shapes due to construction facility, although the discharge coefficient values of sharp crested weirs are lower compared to rounded crest shape.

Mixed formulation for an easy and robust numerical computation of sorptivity

Lassabatere, Laurent; Peyneau, Pierre-Emmanuel; Yilmaz, Deniz; Pollacco, Joseph; Fernández-Gálvez, Jesús; Latorre, Borja; Moret-Fernández, David; Di Prima, Simone; Rahmati, Mehdi; Stewart, Ryan D.

Sorptivity is one of the most important parameters for the quantification of water infiltration into soils. proposed a specific formulation to derive sorptivity as a function of the soil water retention and hydraulic conductivity functions, as well as initial and final soil water contents. However, this formulation requires the integration of a function involving hydraulic diffusivity, which may be undefined or present numerical difficulties that cause numerical misestimations. In this study, we propose a mixed formulation that scales sorptivity and splits the integrals into two parts: the first term involves the scaled degree of saturation, while the second involves the scaled water pressure head. The new mixed formulation is shown to be robust and well-suited to any type of hydraulic function - even with infinite hydraulic diffusivity or positive air-entry water pressure heads - and any boundary condition, including infinite initial water pressure head, h→-∞. Lastly, we show the benefits of using the proposed formulation for modeling water into soil with analytical models that use sorptivity. Copyright:

Uncovering the gap between intention and behaviour towards knowledge sharing: Evidence from a hybrid healthcare institution

    Uyan, Umut; Şanal, Musa

This study set out to test an integrative model towards knowledge sharing (KS) practices in health institutions, which have recently been referred to as knowledge-intensive organisations. The model assesses the relative contributions of various organisational and relational factors in explaining knowledge sharing intention (KSI), as well as the moderating effects of both socio-cognitive factors and the nature of knowledge to be shared on the relationship between KSI and knowledge sharing behaviour (KSB). The data utilised in the research were obtained from a health institution designed as a public-private partnership through the survey questionnaires. Findings suggest that highly formalised and hierarchical organisational structures negatively affect KSI, whereas constructive communication climate and organisational integration enhance it. The relationship between facilitating tools and technologies, which is the last of the organisational factors examined, and KSI was non-significant. Two out of the three relational factors, trust and affiliation, positively predicted KSI, but no statistically significant relationship was found between normative beliefs and KSI. Finally, the results suggest that the perceived reciprocity eases the translation of the intention towards KS into actual sharing behaviour, whereas the perceived power loss weakens the mentioned relationship.

Travelling Theory and Women’s Movements in Turkey: Imagining Europe

    Gulcicek, Demet

Drawing on archival research, Travelling Theory and Women’s Movements in Turkey examines the imagination of Europe in the context of women’s rights movements in a self-defined non-European setting. It brings travelling theory, poststructuralist feminist theories and orientalist studies together to provide an original theoretical framework for understanding the complex and often contradictory imaginations of Europe. Such imaginations can be an object of desire, fantasy, hate and hostility in a non-European context. This volume sheds light on the manner in which local power dynamics are reproduced, negotiated and subverted during the travel of women’s and feminist movements. With a focus on the late Ottoman Empire, the book questions how ‘Other’ positions can be inhabited by the ‘Self’ and unpacks sexual and normative dimensions of demanding women’s rights in this context. As such, it will appeal to scholars of sociology, cultural studies and gender studies with interests in feminist theory and notions of European and non-European categories.

Using the Taguchi Method to Optimize the Compressive Strength of Concrete in Different Aggregates Typology; [Farklı Tipolojideki Doğal Agregalı Betonların Basınç Dayanımını Optimize Etmede Taguchi Metodunun Kullanımı]

    Gönen, Tahir; Cemalgil, Selim

Concrete quality is affected by many factors such as mixing ratios, material quality, transporting, placing and curing. One of the crucial factors that changes the compressive strength of concrete is aggregate which makes up 75% of concrete during concrete production. Properties of aggregate are more unstable than other materials depending on various reasons. Granulometry, moisture or organic substance amount of the aggregates which have same origin may differ within time. This study investigates physical and mechanical properties of crushed limestone and crushed river aggregates. It is on optimum design of concrete with crushed limestone and crushed river aggregates. At first, physical and mechanical properties of the aggregates are measured, then Taguchi method is applied. Test variables are water-to-binder ratio, cement dosage, river sand ratio to limestone and air entrained agent. L16 orthogonal array as an experimental design method is applied to determine the optimum concrete design in terms of compressive strength and flexural strength. Furthermore, contribution of variables on compressive and flexure strength is determined statically by using ANOVA method. Among the 4 different aggregate ratios evaluated in the study, the best performance is from the combination of 70% stream and 30% limestone. The weakest performance is from the series that do not contain any stream material.

Determining the Criterion Weights for the Selection of Volunteers in Humanitarian Organizations by the Best-Worst Method

Ozdemir, Umit; Mete, Suleyman; Gul, Muhammet

Today, it is vital for humanitarian organizations operating in many different fields to select volunteers from the determining criteria according to the needs of the institution. Failure to select volunteers in accordance with the institution's needs may cause the volunteers to be unable to continue their duties and interrupt the institution's work. When choosing volunteers, it is essential for effective volunteer management to classify (expert, experienced, inexperienced, and insufficient) them according to the institution’s needs and assign them starting from the volunteer in the best class volunteer when necessary. The aim of this study is to determine the criteria weights in the classification of volunteers who want to participate in search and rescue activities in humanitarian aid organizations according to the criteria determined before their assignment. In this study, a questionnaire is applied to field experts in Turkey to determine the most important and least important criteria, then criteria weights are calculated by using the Best-Worst Method (BWM). The findings obtained as a result of our study are evaluated and suggestions are made on how to improve it for future studies.

Anti-tank impact absorption with a reinforced concrete plate design

Polat, Berivan Yilmazer; Savaş, Sedat; Polat, Alper

Anti-tank weapons are among the infantry weapons used by the armies of many countries. Anti-tank rockets and explosives such as TNT, generally used for armour piercing, are also frequently used in terrorist attacks. These attacks damage the protection facilities built from reinforced concrete. Rockets or similar explosives’ rapid speed and burst temperatures pierce reinforced concrete during strikes, resulting in casualties and damage to crucial strategic structures. This study aimed to devise an economic and applicable reinforced concrete plate that could absorb the impact of anti-tank rockets and Trinitrotoluene (TNT) type explosives. Therefore, 5 different samples, produced from C50 reinforced concrete and 150×150 cm in size, were formed by combining plates of different numbers and thicknesses. Also, a sample, which was a single thick plate, was prepared. In destructive testing, Rocket Propelled Grenade (RPG-7) was used as the anti-tank rocket launcher. As a result of this study, the impact damage was reduced with hollow concrete plate geometries, and recommendations were developed for complete prevention.
