Çelebi, Adalet; Imak, Andaç; Üzen, Hüseyin; Budak, Ümit; Türkoğlu, Muammer; Hanbay, Davut; Şengür, Abdulkadir
Objectives: This study, which uses artificial intelligence-based methods, aimed to determine the limits of pathologic conditions and infections related to the maxillary sinus in cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) images to facilitate the work of dentists. Methods: A new UNet architecture based on a state-of-the-art Swin transformer called Res-Swin-UNet was developed to detect the sinus. The encoder part of the proposed network model consists of a pre-trained ResNet architecture, and the decoder part consists of Swin transformer blocks. Swin transformers achieve powerful global context properties with self-attention mechanisms. Because the output of the Swin transformer generates sectorized features, the patch expanding layer was used in this section instead of the traditional upsampling layer. In the last layer of the decoder, sinus diagnosis was conducted through classical convolution and sigmoid function. In experimental works, we used a data set including 298 CBCT images. Results: The Res-Swin-UNet model achieved more success, with a 91.72% F1-score, 99% accuracy, and 84.71% IoU, outperforming the state-of-the-art models. Conclusions: The deep learning-based model proposed in the present study can assist dentists in automatically detecting the boundaries of pathologic conditions and infections within the maxillary sinus based on CBCT images.

- MakaleAçık Erişim2024Scopus SJRQ2An evaluation of societal perception of monkeypox in terms of disease anxiety and stress levels: A Turkish sample
Yeşiltepe, Akgün; Ayşe, Ç.A.L.
Objective: The purpose of this research was to examine community perception of monkeypox in terms of epidemic anxiety and stress levels. Methods: This research was performed as a descriptive, cross-sectional study. The research was conducted with 1001 individuals between September and December 2022. AMOS 24, JAMOVI, and SPSS version 25 software were employed. The data were collected using a descriptive form, the Epidemic Anxiety Scale, and the Perceived Stress Scale. Results: The mean Epidemic Anxiety Scale score was 52.47 ± 14.52, and the mean Perceived Stress Scale score was 41.88 ± 6.83. Significant positive correlation was determined between the Epidemic Anxiety Scale and the Perceived Stress Scale (r = 0.350, p =.000). A one-unit increase in perceived stress caused a 0.360 increase in epidemic anxiety (ß = 0.360). In addition, having heard of and fearing monkeypox, thinking about its ability to cause an epidemic, and perceived stress emerged as significant predictors of epidemic anxiety. Conclusion: The community was found to exhibit a moderate level of epidemic anxiety and a low level of perceived stress. Epidemic anxiety levels increased in line with perceived stress levels. We recommend that individuals in need receive support by determining epidemic anxiety and perceived stress levels in the community.

- MakaleAçık Erişim2024Scopus SJRQ1World of Crayfish™: a web platform towards real-time global mapping of freshwater crayfish and their pathogens
Ion, Mihaela C.; Bloomer, Caitlin C.; Bărăscu, Tudor I.; Oficialdegui, Francisco J.; Shoobs, Nathaniel F.; Williams, Bronwyn W.; Scheers, Kevin; Clavero, Miguel; Grandjean, Frédéric; Collas, Marc
Freshwater crayfish are amongst the largest macroinvertebrates and play a keystone role in the ecosystems they occupy. Understanding the global distribution of these animals is often hindered due to a paucity of distributional data. Additionally, nonnative crayfish introductions are becoming more frequent, which can cause severe environmental and economic impacts. Management decisions related to crayfish and their habitats require accurate, up-to-date distribution data and mapping tools. Such data are currently patchily distributed with limited accessibility and are rarely up-to-date. To address these challenges, we developed a versatile e-portal to host distributional data of freshwater crayfish and their pathogens (using Aphanomyces astaci, the causative agent of the crayfish plague, as the most prominent example). Populated with expert data and operating in near real-time, World of Crayfish™ is a living, publicly available database providing worldwide distributional data sourced by experts in the field. The database offers open access to the data through specialized standard geospatial services (Web Map Service, Web Feature Service) enabling users to view, embed, and download customizable outputs for various applications. The platform is designed to support technical enhancements in the future, with the potential to eventually incorporate various additional features. This tool serves as a step forward towards a modern era of conservation planning and management of freshwater biodiversity. Copyright 2024 Ion et al.

Orhan, İlksen; Koçak, Hatice Serap
Objective: The nutritional status of seasonal migrant agricultural workers is negatively affected by problems with working conditions, wages, accommodations, and living conditions. This study aimed to investigate the living conditions, dietary habits, and food consumption frequency of seasonal migrant agricultural workers in Turkey. Methods: This descriptive, cross-sectional study was conducted in July and August 2022 in the neighborhoods of Akçadağ district in Malatya Province, Turkey. The sample of the study consisted of 262 seasonal migrant agricultural workers aged 15 and over who came to the region for the apricot harvest. The data were obtained using the face-to-face interview technique via a two-part questionnaire including questions on socio-demographic characteristics, living conditions, dietary behaviors and food consumption frequency. Results: The mean age of the seasonal migrant agricultural workers was 24.16 ± 0.75, and they worked 12.01 ± 0.10 hours per day on average. It was determined 74.8% of the workers had access to clean water, and 50.4% did not think they had an adequate and balanced diet. It was found only 57.3% of the workers had a normal body mass index, 80.2% never ate fish, 53.8% never ate red meat, and 67.2% never drank milk, while only 34.4% were able to eat seasonal vegetables. Conclusion: The findings of the study show that seasonal migrant agricultural workers in Turkey do not have suitable conditions in terms of food and accommodations, and their working conditions, wages, and health conditions are inadequate. These deficiencies have a negative effect on workers’ quality of life and health status.

- MakaleAçık Erişim2024Scopus SJRQ2Photocatalytic Hydrogen Evolution of TiZrNbHfTaOx High-Entropy Oxide Synthesized by Mechano-Thermal Method
Güler, Ömer; Boyrazlı, Mustafa; Albayrak, Muhammet Gökhan; Güler, Seval Hale; Ishihara, Tatsumi; Edalati, Kaveh
One of the most promising solutions to slow down CO2 emissions is the use of photocatalysis to produce hydrogen as a clean fuel. However, the efficiency of the photocatalysts is not at the desired level, and they usually need precious metal co-catalysts for reactions. In this study, to achieve efficient photocatalytic hydrogen production, a high-entropy oxide was synthesized by a mechano-thermal method. The synthesized high-entropy oxide had a bandgap of 2.45 eV, which coincided with both UV and visible light regions. The material could successfully produce hydrogen from water under light, but the main difference to conventional photocatalysts was that the photocatalysis proceeded without a co-catalyst addition. Hydrogen production increased with increasing time, and at the end of the 3 h period, 134.76 µmol/m2 h of hydrogen was produced. These findings not only introduce a new method for producing high-entropy photocatalysts but also confirm the high potential of high-entropy photocatalysts for hydrogen production without the need for precious metal co-catalysts.

- MakaleAçık Erişim2024Scopus SJRQ1Integrated Approach Using Intuitionistic Fuzzy Multicriteria Decision-Making to Support Classifier Selection for Technology Adoption in Patients with Parkinson Disease: Algorithm Development and Validation
Ortiz-Barrios, Miguel; Cleland, Ian; Donnelly, Mark; Gul, Muhammet; Yucesan, Melih; Jiménez-Delgado, Genett Isabel; Nugent, Chris; Madrid-Sierra, Stephany
Background: Parkinson disease (PD) is reported to be among the most prevalent neurodegenerative diseases globally, presenting ongoing challenges and increasing burden on health care systems. In an effort to support patients with PD, their carers, and the wider health care sector to manage this incurable condition, the focus has begun to shift away from traditional treatments. One of the most contemporary treatments includes prescribing assistive technologies (ATs), which are viewed as a way to promote independent living and deliver remote care. However, the uptake of these ATs is varied, with some users not ready or willing to accept all forms of AT and others only willing to adopt low-technology solutions. Consequently, to manage both the demands on resources and the efficiency with which ATs are deployed, new approaches are needed to automatically assess or predict a user’s likelihood to accept and adopt a particular AT before it is prescribed. Classification algorithms can be used to automatically consider the range of factors impacting AT adoption likelihood, thereby potentially supporting more effective AT allocation. From a computational perspective, different classification algorithms and selection criteria offer various opportunities and challenges to address this need. Objective: This paper presents a novel hybrid multicriteria decision-making approach to support classifier selection in technology adoption processes involving patients with PD. Methods: First, the intuitionistic fuzzy analytic hierarchy process (IF-AHP) was implemented to calculate the relative priorities of criteria and subcriteria considering experts’ knowledge and uncertainty. Second, the intuitionistic fuzzy decision-making trial and evaluation laboratory (IF-DEMATEL) was applied to evaluate the cause-effect relationships among criteria/subcriteria. Finally, the combined compromise solution (CoCoSo) was used to rank the candidate classifiers based on their capability to model the technology adoption. Results: We conducted a study involving a mobile smartphone solution to validate the proposed methodology. Structure (F5) was identified as the factor with the highest relative priority (overall weight=0.214), while adaptability (F4) (D-R=1.234) was found to be the most influencing aspect when selecting classifiers for technology adoption in patients with PD. In this case, the most appropriate algorithm for supporting technology adoption in patients with PD was the A3 - J48 decision tree (M3=2.5592). The results obtained by comparing the CoCoSo method in the proposed approach with 2 alternative methods; (simple additive weighting and technique for order of preference by similarity to ideal solution) support the accuracy and applicability of the proposed methodology. It was observed that the final scores of the algorithms in each method were highly correlated (Pearson correlation coefficient >0.8). Conclusions: The IF-AHP-IF-DEMATEL-CoCoSo approach helped to identify classification algorithms that do not just discriminate between good and bad adopters of assistive technologies within the Parkinson population but also consider technology-specific features like design, quality, and compatibility that make these classifiers easily implementable by clinicians in the health care system.

- MakaleAçık Erişim2024Scopus SJRQ1Changes in quality characteristics and inactivation of Salmonella in cake, including oleogel used as a fat replacer, baked with two different methods
Ozdemir-Orhan, Necla; Eroglu, Zeynep; Omac, Basri
This is the first study to assess the impact of substitution of shortening (50%) with sunflower-beeswax oleogel in cake formulations on the inactivation kinetics of Salmonella spp. and the quality attributes of cakes baked in conventional (CO) and microwave (MWO) ovens. Four distinct cake samples were examined in the study: Cake samples containing oleogel prepared in two different ovens (Oleo-Cake-CO and Oleo-Cake-MWO) and control cake samples baked in two different ovens (Cont-Cake-CO and Cont-Cake-MWO). The control-batter and oleogel-batter demonstrated shear thinning behavior (pseudoplastic, n < 1), with a good fit to the Power Law model, but viscosity and viscoelastic moduli decreased when the oleogel was used in place of shortening in cake recipes. In addition, the Cont-Cake-MWO had the greatest special volume value (2.31 ± 0.04 mL/g), whereas the Oleo-Cake-CO had the lowest (1.65 ± 0.02 mL/g) (p < 0.05). Furthermore, compared to the samples baked with CO, lower water activity and moisture values (p < 0.05) were observed in the samples baked in MWO due to their higher cooking loss values (p < 0.05). In all baking techniques, the addition of oleogel to the cake formula, used as a fat substitute, resulted in higher values for cohesiveness, hardness, springiness, and chewiness (p < 0.05). As a result, the inactivation of Salmonella in cakes slightly reduced with using oleogel as a fat substitute (p > 0.05), whereas it affected some quality properties of cakes baked with both heat treatments.

Background: Coffee is considered one of the most preferred and consumed beverage types in the world, and caffeine is known to increase physical performance due to its ergogenic properties. The aim of this study is to examine the effects of coffee consumption in different forms on cortisol, testosterone, lactic acid and anaerobic performance levels. Methods: A total of 15 licensed male football players participated in the research voluntarily. The research was implemented in a single-blind, counterbalanced, randomized and crossover study design. Participants were given caffeinated coffee (CK), decaffeinated coffee (placebo) (DK), powdered caffeine (in a gelatin capsule) (PC) and powdered placebo (maltodextrin in a capsule) (PM) on different days, and the Wingate test protocol was performed after the warm-up protocol. Blood samples were collected post-test. Cortisol, testosterone and lactic acid levels in the serum samples taken were determined by the ELISA method. Results: As a result, it was revealed that caffeinated coffee given to participants who exercise increased anaerobic power. However, it was observed that lactic acid levels were higher in placebo and decaffeinated coffee. The highest level of cortisol was found in caffeinated coffee and powdered caffeine compared to the placebo. Testosterone values were observed to be highest in caffeinated coffee and decaffeinated coffee compared to a placebo. Conclusions: The study suggests that the type of caffeine is a factor that affects absorption rate, which impacts performance and hormone levels.

- MakaleYalnız künye2024Scopus SJRQ3Ochratoxin a levels in Turkish coffee: a probabilistic health risk assessment via Monte Carlo simulation
Sevim, Sumeyra; Macit, Arife; Kizil, Mevlude
Throughout history, Turkish coffee has been the most widely consumed type of coffee in Turkey. Therefore, the goal of this study was to determine the amount of ochratoxin A (OTA) present in Turkish coffee and to analyze any potential health hazards. A total of 41 Turkish coffees were collected and analyzed for OTA activity using a competitive enzyme immunoassay (ELISA). Furthermore, dietary exposure and health risk assessments for the Turkish population were calculated based on analytical results and coffee consumption data from the Turkish Nutrition and Health Survey 2019 (TNHS-2019) in three age categories (15–18, 19–64, and 65 + years). Nine of the samples contained more than 2.5 μg/kg OTA, with an average of 5.24 μg/kg. The OTA concentration in 3 samples exceeded the permissible maximum limit (5 μg/kg) established by Turkish legislation, and the mean concentration was 8.41 μg/kg. A margin of exposure (MOE) approach was used for risk characterization, considering both non-neoplastic and neoplastic consequences. There were no concerns about health risks because MOEs were more than 10,000 for all categories. Although the levels of OTA analyzed in Turkish coffee did not pose a risk to individuals in the three age categories, emphasis should be placed on minimizing and controlling OTA concentrations in Turkish coffee. Additionally, it is also necessary to consider other food sources that could contribute to OTA exposure.

Karaaslan Ayhan, Nagihan
In this study, lanthanum (La)-based magnetic biopolymers were synthesized, and the first adsorption study was conducted on the removal of brilliant green dye from aqueous water with these biopolymers. For the adsorption study, adsorption parameters were investigated and the ideal adsorption conditions determined for the removal of brilliant green dye from aqueous solutions are pH 11, t 60 min, m 10 mg, C0 25 mg/L, T 298 K. It was determined that the adsorption process was compatible with the single-layer Langmuir isotherm, and maximum adsorption capacity obtained according to the Langmuir isotherm was calculated as 256.41 mg/g. The adsorption process was found to be in accordance with the pseudo-second-order, and the adsorption process was explained by intra-particle diffusion. According to studies of adsorption thermodynamics, it has been established that the nature of the adsorption reaction is spontaneous, and this process is endothermic and has increasing randomness. Moreover, the reusability of magnetic lanthanum/alginate (La/Alg) biopolymers was investigated, and it was determined that the biopolymers could be used successfully. In summary, brilliant green dye has been successfully removed with simple, low-cost, environmentally friendly, and easily obtained magnetic La/Alg biopolymers. It can be stated that even low amounts of these biopolymers can be effective in the treatment of highly concentrated dye wastewaters.

- MakaleAçık Erişim2024Scopus SJRQ1Effect of curing conditions on cement based self-compacting mortar produced with mortar waste aggregate
Akgül, Melek
Concrete and mortar wastes, which have a large volume and economic value among construction demolition wastes, are the most targeted demolition waste group to be recycled. An important area where construction demolition waste can be utilized is self-compacting mortar (SCM) systems. SCMs are innovative and economical systems designed to minimize the labor requirements that are difficult to meet in the production process. In this study, mortar waste aggregate (MWA) obtained by mechanical crushing and grinding was used in SCM elements by substituting different ratios (5-10-20-30-40 %) by mass to aggregate. In this way, it was aimed to evaluate both the sustainability of MWAs and the usability of MWAs in SCMs, which are considered as a new production technology. The fresh and hardened mortar tests performed in the study are presented comparatively. The physical (dry unit volume weight, porosity), durability (capillary water absorption) and mechanical properties (flexural tensile, compressive strength) of the hardened SCM elements are based on the determinations made at 3, 7 and 28 test days and according to different curing conditions (water curing, air curing and heat curing). In addition, X-ray Diffractometer (XRD) analysis was performed on specimens obtained from 0 %, 10 %, 20 % and 40 % MWA substituted specimens after heat curing (after 7 days water curing) and 28 days water curing. In the light of the data obtained, it is reported that SCM production with 10 % MWA substitution is feasible in terms of sustainability and engineering properties evaluated in this study.

This study aimed to develop new generation cakes that were fortified with calcined ZnO nanoparticles (CZnO), uncalcined ZnO nanoparticles (UCZnO), beads (B(CZnO)) synthesized by encapsulating the CZnO with sodium alginate (SA), and the beads (B(UCZnO)) synthesized by encapsulating the UCZnO with sodium alginate (SA) and investigated the zinc (Zn) release in fortified cakes in simulated body fluids (SBF). The present study represents a novel method for increasing intestinal absorption and bioavailability of dietary zinc with zinc nanoparticles for use in the preparation of Zn fortified cakes as a dietary supplement to compensate for zinc deficiency in humans. The results revealed that a rapid increase in the release time and rate in the SGF solution was noted in the UCZnO added cakes. It was attributed to increased intestinal absorption and bioavailability as a result of the ultra-small size of ZnO. Also, ZnO release kinetics in SBF was also studied and data were adjusted into different kinetic models involving zero-order, first-order, Higuchi, and Korsmeyer–Peppas models. The present investigation recommends adding UCZnO to the cakes to control and increase the release from the cakes.

Sperm quality is preserved through the crucial involvement of antioxidants, which play a vital role in minimizing the occurrence of reactive oxygen species (ROS) during the cryopreservation process. The suitability of the type and concentration of antioxidants are species-dependent, and this study is crucial in order to improve the quality of the climbing perch sperm post-cryopreservation. Therefore, this study aimed to determine the best type and concentration of antioxidants for cryopreservation of climbing perch Anabas testudineus sperm. To achieve this, 6 types of antioxidants, namely, ascorbic acid, beta-carotene, glutathione, butylated hydroxytoluene (BHT), myo-inositol, and alpha-tocopherol, with inclusion of a control were tested in 3 replications at three concentration levels of 0 mg/L (control), 20 mg/L, 40 mg/L, and 60 mg/L. Sperm was diluted in a glucose-base extender at a ratio of 1:60 (sperm: glucose base), then 10 % DMSO and 5 % egg yolk was added before cryopreservation for two weeks. The results showed that the type and concentration of antioxidants had a significant effect on the motility and viability of cryopreserved climbing perch sperm (P < 0.05), where the best results for ascorbic acid, beta-carotene, glutathione, myo-inositol, and alpha-tocopherol were obtained at a concentration of 60 mg/L, while BHT was at a concentration of 20 mg/L. The best results for glutathione, myo-inositol, and alpha-tocopherol were significantly different from other treatments, while the best results for ascorbic acid and beta-carotene (60 mg/L) were not significantly different from the 40 mg/L concentration, while the best results for BHT were not significantly different from the control treatments. Therefore, the best concentration of glutathione, myo-inositol, and alpha-tocopherol was 60 mg/L, while for ascorbic acid and beta-carotene it was 40 mg/L, and BHT was not recommended. DNA integrity analysis indicated the absence of fragmentation in all samples, including fresh, control, and treated sperm. Based on practical and economic considerations, myo-inositol at 60 mg/L was recommended for cryopreservation of climbing perch A. testudineus sperm.

“Sulmona Red Garlic” is a well-known Italian traditional product. Bulbs, used for culinary purposes, have been largely investigated for their medicinal properties whereas aerial bulbils are usually removed as waste material. Here, for the first time, chemical composition and biological properties of the hydroalcoholic extract from aerial bulbils were investigated. Complementary information on metabolite composition were obtained using both NMR based untargeted and HPLC-DAD targeted methodologies. The NMR analysis revealed the presence of sugars, organic acids, amino acids, organosulphur compounds (methiin, alliin, allicin and cycloalliin), and other secondary metabolites. In particular, methiin and alliin were identified for the first time in the NMR spectra of aerial bulbil garlic extracts. Polyphenol content was determined by HPLC-DAD analysis: catechin, chlorogenic acid, and gallic acid turned out to be the most abundant phenolics. Hydroalcoholic extract blocked cell proliferation of colon cancer cell line HCT116 with an IC50 of 352.07 µg/mL, while it was non-toxic to myoblast cell line C2C12. In addition, it caused seedling germination reduction of two edible and herbaceous dicotyledon species, namely Cichorium intybus and C. endivia. Moreover, the same extract reduced the gene expression of TNF-α (tumor necrosis factor), HIF1-α (hypoxia-inducible factor), VEGFA (vascular endothelial growth factor), and transient receptor potential (TRP) M8 (TRPM8) indicating the ability to contrast cancer development through the angiogenic pathway. Final, in silico experiments were also carried out supporting the biological effects of organosulphur compounds, particularly alliin, which may directly interact with TRPM8. The results here reported suggest the potential use of garlic aerial bulbils often considered a waste product as a source in phytotherapeutic remedies.

1. Tibial dyschondroplasia (TD) is a skeletal disorder in broilers that has financial implications, necessitating dietary modifications to reduce the prevalence of this disease. This study explored how arginine silicate inositol complex (ASI) supplementation affected tibial growth plate (TGP) and overall bone health in broilers with manganese (Mn) deficiency-induced TD. 2. A total of 240 broiler chicks were divided into four groups, each consisting of 60 birds (15 replicates of four broilers each) as follows: i) Control, with 60 mg Mn per kg of diet; ii) ASI, with 60 mg Mn and 1 g ASI per kg of diet; iii) TD, with 22 mg Mn per kg of diet, and iv) TD+ASI, with 22 mg Mn and 1 g ASI per kg of diet. 3. It was found that ASI supplementation increased tibial bone length in Mn-deficient TD broilers (p = 0.007). There was no Mn x ASI interaction for other bone morphometry variables (p > 0.05). However, both tibial bone mineral content and density were affected by Mn and ASI (p < 0.05). With ASI supplementation, serum bone-specific alkaline phosphatase and osteocalcin levels were elevated in the TD+ASI group compared to the TD group (p < 0.001). In the TD group, osteoprotegerin (OPG) levels in the TGP decreased compared to the control groups (p < 0.001). 4. In contrast, ASI supplementation in the TD broilers counteracted the decrease in OPG compared to TD broilers without ASI supplementation (p < 0.001). The Mn level and ASI supplementation significantly influenced the OPG/receptor activator of the nuclear factor-κB ligand ratio (p < 0.001). 5. In conclusion, the results demonstrated that inclusion of ASI in broiler diets could enhance bone formation variables by controlling OPG levels in the TGP, potentially serving as an effective method to decrease the occurrence of TD.

The present study aimed to investigate the chemical constituents of different extracts from aerial parts of A. absinthium and to evaluate their antioxidant and enzyme inhibition activity. Extracts were prepared by maceration, infusion or Soxhlet techniques. Results showed that the highest total phenolic and flavonoids contents was recorded respectively from the hexane extract prepared by maceration and ethyl acetate extract obtained by Soxhlet method. The characteristic compounds of Artemisia species artemetin, casticin, sesartemin and yangambin in addition to coumarins were identified in all extracts. Aqueous extract obtained by infusion exerted the highest radical scavenging and ions reducing properties while that prepared by maceration displayed the highest chelating power. Methanol extracts obtained by the two methods of extraction exerted the highest anti-Tyr activity while that obtained by maceration showed the best α-glucosidase inhibition activity. These findings indicated that A. absinthium is a rich source of bioactive molecules with possible therapeutic applications.
