An interval type-2 fuzzy QUALIFLEX approach to measure performance effectiveness of ballast water treatment (BWT) system on-board ship

Demirel, Hakan; Akyuz, Emre; Celik, Erkan; Alarcin, Fuat

Ballast water is of paramount importance for safe and efficient shipping operation since it provides ship’s strength and stability. The ballast water, on the other hand, poses serious marine ecological problems due to the non-indigenous species (NIS) carried in sea water. The International Maritime Organisation introduced International Convention for the Control and Management of Ships’ Ballast Water and Sediments (BWM Convention) to prevent the spread of harmful species from one region to another via ballast water. According to the convention, each ship must be equipped with a proper ballast water treatment system (BWTS). In this context, this paper is aimed at measuring the performance effectiveness of current BWTS used in ships. To achieve this purpose, a Qualitative Flexible (QUALIFLEX) method is used under interval type-2 fuzzy sets (IT2FSs) environment. While the QUALIFLEX handles all possible permutations of the alternatives for outranking, the IT2FSs deal with uncertainty this paper provides practical benefits to ship owners, ship’s safety inspectors, managers and marine environmentalists during decision-making progress of the BWTS settlement on-board ship.

Zengin, Gokhan; Mahomoodally, Mohamad Fawzi; Paksoy, Mehmet Yavuz; Picot-Allain, Carene; Glamocilja, Jasmina; Sokovic, Marina; Diuzheva, Alina; Jekő, József; Cziáky, Zoltán; Rodrigues, Maria João

Several species of the Apiaceae family have been employed in traditional cultures for their curative virtues. The present study focused on five Apiaceae species, (Falcaria vulgaris (FV), Smyrniopsis aucheri (SA), Smyrniopsis munzurdagensis (SM), Smyrnium cordifolium (SC), and Actinolema macrolema (AM)). The antioxidant, enzyme inhibitory (α-amylase, α-glucosidase, acetyl- and butyrylcholinesterase, lipase, and tyrosinase), antimicrobial, phytochemical, and cytotoxicity profiles of the methanol extracts of the selected Apiaceae species were determined. SC extract (35.68 mg gallic acid equivalent/g extract) possessed the highest phenolic content while the AM extract (56.79 mg rutin equivalent/g extract) had the highest flavonoid content. HPLC-ESI-MS (High performance liquid chromatography-electrospray tandem mass spectrometry) analyses showed presence of ferulic acid in all the five species. SC extract exhibited high radical scavenging (59.28 and 94.31 mg Trolox equivalent [TE]/g extract, DPPH (1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl) and ABTS (2,2′-azino-bis(3-ethylbenzothiazoline)-6-sulfonic acid), respectively) and reducing activity (161.44 and 113.62 mg TE/g extract, for CUPRAC (cupric reducing antioxidant capacity) and FRAP (ferric reducing antioxidant power), respectively). SM extract exhibited the highest cholinesterase's inhibitory action (3.82 and 4.76 mg galantamine equivalent/g extract, for acetyl- and butyrylcholinesterase, respectively). The extracts showed higher inhibition against α-glucosidase (7.32-11.99 mmol acarbose equivalent [ACAE]/g extract) compared to α-amylase (0.51-0.55 mmol ACAE/g extract). SC extract was the most active (137.54 mg kojic acid equivalent/g extract) tyrosinase inhibitor and FV extract (113.75 mg Orlistat equivalent/g) the best lipase inhibitor. SM extract showed potent antibacterial effect against B. cereus (MIC (minimum inhibitory concentration) 0.180 mg/mL), P. mirabilis (MIC 0.180 mg/mL), M. flavus (MIC 0.560 mg/mL), P. aeruginosa (MIC 0.275 mg/mL), and S. typhimurium (MIC 1.500 mg/mL). FV extract (MIC 0.140 mg/mL) suppressed A. fumigatus growth. Cytotoxicity was assessed on murine macrophage (RAW 264.7), human embryonic kidney (HEK 293), and human hepatocellular carcinoma (HepG2) cell lines. FV (60.3%) and SM (57.4%) showed the highest reduction on RAW 264.7 cellular viability, whereas SM (74.1%) showed toxicity against HepG2. This study supports that the Apiaceae species could be considered as promising candidates for the development of novel pharmacophores for the management of several human ailments.

Serin, Faruk; Mete, Süleyman; Çelik, Erkan

Purpose: Changing the product characteristics and demand quantity resulting from the variability of the modern market leads to re-assigned tasks and changing the cycle time on the production line. Therefore, companies need re-balancing of their assembly line instead of balancing. The purpose of this paper is to propose an efficient algorithm approach for U-type assembly line re-balancing problem using stochastic task times. Design/methodology/approach: In this paper, a genetic algorithm is proposed to solve approach for U-type assembly line re-balancing problem using stochastic task times. Findings: The performance of the genetic algorithm is tested on a wide variety of data sets from literature. The task times are assumed normal distribution. The objective is to minimize total re-balancing cost, which consists of workstation cost, operating cost and task transposition cost. The test results show that proposed genetic algorithm approach for U-type assembly line re-balancing problem performs well in terms of minimizing total re-balancing cost. Practical implications: Demand variation is considered for stochastic U-type re balancing problem. Demand change also affects cycle time of the line. Hence, the stochastic U-type re-balancing problem under four different cycle times are analyzed to present practical case. Originality/value: As per the authors’ knowledge, it is the first time that genetic algorithm is applied to stochastic U-type re balancing problem. The large size data set is generated to analyze performance of genetic algorithm. The results of proposed algorithm are compared with ant colony optimization algorithm.

The effect of curcumin on lipid peroxidation and selected antioxidants in irradiated rats

Ozcelik, Mehtap; Erişir, Mine; Guler, Osman; Baykara, Murat; Kirman, Esra

The effect of irradiation on oxidants and antioxidants in selected tissues and a possible protective effect of curcumin on these indices were investigated. A total of 28 rats were divided into 3 groups; group 1 was control; group 2 was the irradiation group, saline was administered intraperiotenally (i.p.) for three days and then, 9 Gy gamma irradiation was applied; group 3 was the irradiation + curcumin group: curcumin was given i.p. for three days at 200 mg/ kg body weight and then the same dose of irradiation was applied. A significant increase in malondialdehyde (MDA) was detected in the liver, kidney, and brain tissues of the rats as a result of irradiation (P ˂ 0.01). Glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px) activity in all the tissues (except for kidneys) decreased (P ˂ 0.01), liver SOD (superoxide dismutase) activity decreased (P ˂ 0.05), and GSH (glutathione) levels in kidney and ovary tissues (P ˂ 0.001) significantly increased. While curcumin administration returned the increased MDA levels in the kidneys and brain in result of irradiation to normal (P ˂ 0.01), it did not return the increased MDA levels in the liver tissue to normal (P ˂ 0.001) despite significantly reducing them. While decreased GSH-Px and SOD activity in the liver in result of irradiation increased with the addition of curcumin (P ˂ 0.05), increased GSH levels in the kidneys and ovaries returned to control levels (P ˂ 0.001). When MDA values were examined, it was found that the addition of curcumin protected the liver, kidneys and brain from the oxidative damage caused by irradiation.

    Yel, G.; Baskonus, H.M.; Bulut, H.

In this paper, our main aim is to find the new travelling wave solutions to the Wu–Zhang system which describes dispersive long waves. Some new and important travelling wave solutions with rational and exponential function structures are successfully constructed by using the improved Bernoulli subequation function method. All the obtained solutions in this study satisfy the Wu–Zhang system. The interesting three- and two-dimensional surfaces to all the obtained solutions are plotted. We carried out all the computations and the graphics plots in this paper with aid of the Wolfram Mathematica 9.

Lactose hydrolysis and protein fortification pose an increased risk for the formation of Maillard reaction products in UHT treated milk products

Aktağ, Işıl Gürsul; Hamzalıoğlu, Aytül; Gökmen, Vural

This study aimed to survey the content of Maillard reaction products in different UHT-treated milk products and to assess how formation of these products and lysine blockage is affected by the composition. For this purpose, different commercial UHT milks including milk (whole, semi-skimmed and skimmed), lactose-hydrolyzed, protein-fortified, lactose-hydrolyzed protein fortified and follow-on infant milks were analyzed. Among the Maillard reaction products, dicarbonyl compounds, 5-hydroxymethylfurfural, furosine, N-ε-carboxymethyllysine and N-ε-carboxyethyllysine were monitored. The results showed that fortification of UHT milks with protein and carbohydrates as well as hydrolysis of lactose promoted the Maillard reaction. Among the dicarbonyl compounds, 3-deoxyglucosone formation, which was the dominant dicarbonyl compound in milks, varied between 3.12–12.67 mg/L, 13.45–21.98 mg/L and 4.59–40.38 mg/L in lactose hydrolyzed, lactose-hydrolyzed protein-fortified and follow-on infant milks whereas it was 0.22-0.40 mg/L in milks, respectively. Similarly, 5-hydroxymethylfurfural could not be detected in milks, whereas mean 5-hydroxymethylfurfural concentration was found to be 56.3 mg/L and 31.5 mg/L in protein-fortified milks and lactose-hydrolyzed protein-fortified milks, respectively. Accordingly, % blocked lysine, furosine, N-ε-carboxymethyllysine and N-ε-carboxyethyllysine content of different UHT milks were found to be significantly higher than milks (p < 0.05). This is the first study reporting the Maillard reaction products in protein-fortified and infant milks.

A new alkaloid paenidigyamycin A (1) was obtained from the novel Ghanaian Paenibacillus sp. isolated from the mangrove rhizosphere soils of the Pterocarpus santalinoides tree growing in the wetlands of the Digya National Park, Ghana. Compound 1 was isolated on HPLC at tR = 37.0 min and its structure determined by MS, 1D, and 2D-NMR data. When tested against L. major, 1 (IC50 0.75 µM) was just as effective as amphotericin B (IC50 0.31 µM). Against L. donovani, 1 (IC50 7.02 µM) was twenty-two times less active than amphotericin B (IC50 0.32 µM), reinforcing the unique effectiveness of 1 against L. major. For T. brucei brucei, 1 (IC50 0.78 µM) was ten times more active than the laboratory standard Coptis japonica (IC50 8.20 µM). The IC50 of 9.08 µM for 1 against P. falciparum 3d7 compared to artesunate (IC50 36 nM) was not strong, but this result suggests the possibility of using the paenidigyamycin scaffold for the development of potent antimalarial drugs. Against cercariae, 1 showed high anticercaricidal activity compared to artesunate. The minimal lethal concentration (MLC) and minimal effective concentration (MEC) of the compound were 25 and 6.25 µM, respectively, while artesunate was needed in higher quantities to produce such results. However, 1 (IC50 > 100 µM) was not active against T. mobilensis.

TRAIL Mediated Signaling in Breast Cancer: Awakening Guardian Angel to Induce Apoptosis and Overcome Drug Resistance

Yin, Ning; Yi, Liu; Khalid, Sumbul; Ozbey, Ulku; Uteuliev, Yerzhan Sabitaliyevich; Farooqi, Ammad Ahmad; Ahmad, A

Sequencing technologies have allowed us to characterize highly heterogeneous molecular landscape of breast cancer with unprecedented details. Tremendous breakthroughs have been made in unraveling contributory role of signaling pathways in breast cancer development and progression. It is becoming progressively more understandable that deregulation of spatio-temporally controlled pathways underlie development of resistance against different drugs. TRAIL mediated signaling has attracted considerable appreciation because of its characteristically unique ability to target cancer cells while leaving normal cells intact. Discovery of TRAIL was considered as a paradigm shift in molecular oncology because of its conspicuous ability to selectively target cancer cells. There was an exponential growth in the number of high-quality reports which highlighted cancer targeting ability of TRAIL and scientists worked on the development of TRAIL-based therapeutics and death receptor targeting agonistic antibodies to treat cancer. However, later studies challenged simplistic view related to tumor targeting ability of TRAIL. Detailed mechanistic insights revealed that overexpression of anti-apoptotic proteins, inactivation of pro-apoptotic proteins and downregulation of death receptors were instrumental in impairing apoptosis in cancer cells. Therefore researchers started to give attention to identification of methodologies and strategies to overcome the stumbling blocks associated with TRAIL-based therapeutics. Subsequent studies gave us a clear picture of signaling cascade of TRAIL and how deregulation of different proteins abrogated apoptosis. In this chapter we have attempted to provide an overview of the TRAIL induced signaling, list of proteins frequently deregulated and modern approaches to strategically restore apoptosis in TRAIL–resistant breast cancers.

The effect of a glyphosate-based herbicide on acetylcholinesterase (AChE) activity, oxidative stress, and antioxidant status in freshwater amphipod: Gammarus pulex (Crustacean)

    Pala, Ayşegül

This study had determined the effect of glyphosate-based herbicide (GBH) on acetylcholinesterase (AChE) enzyme activity, oxidative stress, and antioxidant status in Gammarus pulex. Firstly, the 96-h LC50 value of glyphosate on G. pulex was determined and calculated as 403 μg/L. Subsequently, the organisms were exposed to sub-lethal concentrations (10, 20, and 40 μg/L) of the determined GHB for 24 and 96 h. The samples were taken from control and GBH-treated groups at 24 and 96 h of study and analysed to determine the malondialdehyde (MDA) and reduced glutathione (GSH) levels, the AChE, superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), and glutathione peroxidase (GPx) enzyme activities. In the G. pulex exposed to GBH for 24 and 96 h, the MDA level increased significantly (p < 0.05). The GSH level, the AChE, the CAT, and the GPx activities decreased compared with the control group (p < 0.05). G. pulex exposure to GBH for 24 h showed a temporary reduction in the SOD. GBH exposure led to oxidative stress in the G. pulex as well as affected the cholinergic system of the organism. These results indicated that the parameters measured may be important indicators of herbicide contamination in G. pulex.

Electrical characterization of solar sensitive zinc oxide doped-amorphous carbon photodiode

Koç, Mümin Mehmet; Aslan, Naim; Erkovan, Mustafa; Aksakal, Bünyamin; Uzun, Orhan; Farooq, W. Aslam; Yakuphanoğlu, Fahrettin

A new solar-sensitive zinc oxide doped-amorphous carbon diode was fabricated using the electrochemical deposition technique. The current-voltage characteristics of the fabricated Al/ZnO-a:C/p-Si/Al diode were investigated under dark and various lighting intensities using both I-V and C-V methods. The fabricated diode was characterized by XRD, SEM-EDS, FTIR and XPS analysis. Through the analysis, it was determined that the photocurrents increased with increasing intensity of incident light. The capacitance-voltage (C-V) characteristics revealed that the capacitance of the diode depended on voltage, frequency and illumination, indicating the existence of a continuous distribution of interface states. It was found that the capacitance changed drastically with changing frequency and separation was observed in different frequencies, as identified in the reverse bias region. The ideality factor obtained was found to be higher than unity, with the average barrier height and ideality factor of the diode were found to be 0.528 ± 0.0069 eV and 5.24 ± 0.39, respectively. The newly fabricated ZnO-doped amorphous carbon (Al/ZnO-a:C/p-Si/Al) photodiode exhibited good solar sensitivity. The overall results indicated that the fabricated Al/ZnO-a:C/p-Si can be used as a solar sensitive diode in optoelectronic device applications as an alternative to graphene-based materials.

Evaluation of pharmacological activity of heterobimetallic coordination compounds containing n, n-bis (2-hydroxyethyl)-ethylenediamine on ht29, hela, c6 and vero cells

    Aydin, Ali; Korkmaz, Şengül Aslan

The present study was conducted in order to investigate the pharmacological activities of three heterobimetallic coordination compounds: [Cd(N-bishydeten)2 ][Ni(CN)4 ] (C1), [Cu2 (N-bishydeten)2 Co(CN)6 ].3H2 O (C2), and K[Cd(N-bishydeten)Co(CN)6 ].1.5H2 O (C3) (N-bishydeten = N,N-bis(2-hydroxyethyl)-ethylenediamine). This paper describes the ability of complexes to inhibit cell growth, cell migration and human topoisomerase I and to interact with DNA/BSA; this paper also evaluates the potential mechanisms of action exhibited by these compounds via the use of powerful measurement techniques. Studies on HT29, HeLa, C6 and Vero cells revealed that each compound demonstrated significant antiproliferative activity in conjunction with regressed cell migration velocity and caused apoptotic changes in morphology. There are strong data suggesting that the mechanisms of action exhibited by these compounds are associated with their DNA/BSA binding features. The IC50 and binding constant range for the compounds are 20-180 µM and 1.2-3.2 x 104 M-1, respectively. Moreover, we observed that these compounds alter the P53-Bcl-2 ratio and inhibit the relaxation activity of human topoisomerase I. Furthermore, a correlation between the antiproliferative effects of these compounds and their cytotoxic activity was observed. In conclusion, preliminary information demonstrates that these compounds have been found to exhibit effective antiproliferative activity against cancer cell lines, indicating that they are a potent candidate for further pharmacological study.

Automated detection of diabetic subject using pre-trained 2D-CNN models with frequency spectrum images extracted from heart rate signals

Yildirim, Ozal; Talo, Muhammed; Ay, B.; Baloglu, Ulas Baran; Aydin, G.; Acharya, U. Rajendra

In this study, a deep-transfer learning approach is proposed for the automated diagnosis of diabetes mellitus (DM), using heart rate (HR) signals obtained from electrocardiogram (ECG) data. Recent progress in deep learning has contributed significantly to improvement in the quality of healthcare. In order for deep learning models to perform well, large datasets are required for training. However, a difficulty in the biomedical field is the lack of clinical data with expert annotation. A recent, commonly implemented technique to train deep learning models using small datasets is to transfer the weighting, developed from a large dataset, to the current model. This deep learning transfer strategy is generally employed for two-dimensional signals. Herein, the weighting of models pre-trained using two-dimensional large image data was applied to one-dimensional HR signals. The one-dimensional HR signals were then converted into frequency spectrum images, which were utilized for application to well-known pre-trained models, specifically: AlexNet, VggNet, ResNet, and DenseNet. The DenseNet pre-trained model yielded the highest classification average accuracy of 97.62%, and sensitivity of 100%, to detect DM subjects via HR signal recordings. In the future, we intend to further test this developed model by utilizing additional data along with cloud-based storage to diagnose DM via heart signal analysis.

Using Box–Behnken design approach to investigate benzo[a]anthracene formation in smoked cattle meat samples and its’ risk assessment

    Kaplan Ince, Olcay; Ince, Muharrem

In present study, a novel approach was selected for benzo[a]anthracene determination from smoked cattle meat samples using solid phase extraction under various experimental conditions. To optimize experimental variables, a three factor, three-level Box–Behnken experimental design combining with response surface methodology and quadratic programming were employed to prevent excessive amount of benzo[a]anthracene formation in smoked meat based on different experimental parameters. The influence of some important process parameters including cooking time (10–30 min), fat ratio (5–25%) and distance to the cooking source (5–25 cm), which significantly affected the formation efficiency of benzo[a]anthracene were optimized. The analysis of variance was conducted for specifying the interactions of independent variables. The independent and the dependent variables interactions were investigated. The quadratic regression model and the response surface contour plots were used to determine optimum values for the selected variables. The results of study revealed that optimum cooking time of smoked cattle meat was determined as 24.9 min, fat ratio 7.9% and the distance to the cooking source 21.8 cm. Under optimum conditions, minimum benzo[a]anthracene was formed in meat and its amount was determined using high performance liquid chromatography-mass spectrophotometer as qualitative and quantitative. The limit of detection and limit of quantitation values were calculated as 0.4 µg kg −1 and 1.1 µg kg −1 , respectively.

Karaaslan, Nagihan M.; Ince, Muharrem; Kaplan Ince, Olcay; Goksin Karaaslan, Merve

Allium tuncelianum (Tunceli garlic), an endemic and threatened plant species in the Tunceli province of Eastern Turkey, is an important native source for local people. The antioxidant activities of the acidified extracts of water, acetonitrile, methanol, and ethanol of Allium tuncelianum were investigated using five antioxidant capacity tests. The results indicated that methanol extract efficiencies of garlic samples using the ABTS, CUPRAC, and reducing power capacities were higher than the other extracts. Water extract and acetonitrile extract values were highest for total phenolic content and metal chelating activities, respectively. Moreover, the element contents such as calcium (Ca), copper (Cu), iron (Fe), potassium (K), magnesium (Mg), manganese (Mn), sodium (Na), and zinc (Zn) of Allium tuncelianum samples digested by microwave and ashing ovens were determined by flame atomic absorption spectrophotometry and the results were compared statistically. The Ca, Cu, K, Mg, and Zn concentrations using the microwave method were found to be higher than the ashing procedure. However, the Fe, Mn, and Na concentrations using the ashing method were found to be higher than those using the the microwave protocol.

Elimination of a measurement problem: A robust prediction model for missing eigenvector value to assess earthquake induced out-of-plane failure of infill wall

    Onat, Onur; Yön, Burak

One of the effective methods to assess local or global behavior of structural system is to perform shake table experiment. The biggest challenge of all experiments, either shake table or others, are missing data during the experiments due to removed instruments. This problem is arose especially during the out-of-plane tests. This problem is named as “Measurement” problem. This paper is focused on detection the measurement problem and solving this problem by using Adaptive-Network Based Neuro Inference System (ANFIS). Definition of the problem is briefly missing out-of-plane eigenvector value during the implementation of a shake table experiments on a full scale one bay one storey reinforced concrete structural system. For this aim, two shake table experiments were performed with reinforced concrete frame (RCF)and infill wall at the National Civil Engineering Laboratory (LNEC)Portugal. The out-of-plane failure of infill wall was assessed under combined bidirectional seismic load. Shake table experiments were conducted on two types of specimens. One of them is Unreinforced Brick Infill Wall (URBIF)composed of single layer 22 cm thick brick. The other is single layer 22 cm thick Infill Wall with Bed Joint Reinforcement solution (IwBJR). Both specimens were made of a single-layer brick infill wall enclosure with the RCF. Bed joint reinforcement term refers horizontal bed joint reinforcement as a strengthening technique. Shake table experiments were performed on each specimen at four stages. After third level of earthquake load, the accelerometers were removed on the wall to prevent damage to them. The removal of these instruments results in missing data. The missing eigenvector values were predicted with a robust Adaptive-Network Based Neuro Inference System (ANFIS)model to present failure mode of infill wall. The estimation quality was tested with R2, Mean Absolute Percentage Error (MAPE), Mean Square Error (MSE)and Root Mean Square Error (RMSE)among with available data. The results of the quality indicator of R2 are 0.999 for URBIF model and 0.997 for IwBJR model, respectively. Moreover, rest of the indicator results are less than %1. The proposed approach is reliable on the base of quality indicator. Moreover, this study can be used for seismic engineering to predict eigenvector values to see local behavior of infill wall and mode shape evolution to determine which mod prone for partial and total collapse of infill wall.

Side-Channel Analysis of Chaos-Based Substitution Box Structures

Acikkapi, Mehmet Sahin; Ozkaynak, Fatih; Ozer, Ahmet Bedri

There is a theoretically strong relationship between chaos and cryptology. In practice, one of the most successful applications of this relationship is chaos-based s-box structures. However, the performance metrics of chaos-based s-box designs are worse compared to those for s-box structure based on algebraic techniques used in modern encryption algorithms, such as the AES algorithm. What is the reason for using chaos-based s-box structures, even though they have worse cryptographic characteristics? Researchers claim that they may be an alternative defense against implementation attacks, especially side-channel analyses. However, no studies have supported or refuted this claim so far. In this paper, side-channel analyses have been performed for two different chaos-based s-box structures. These two s-box structures have been selected for having with the best and worst performance measurements for s-box structures previously proposed in the literature. The results were compared with the AES s-box structure. Analysis of the results showed that chaos-based s-box structures are more resistant against side-channel attacks. Therefore, chaos-based designs may be an alternative defense against implementation attacks, as alleged. However, both algebraic and chaos-based s-box designs have been observed to be insecure if the attacker has more than 30 plaintexts in the side channel analyses. These results show that implementation analysis studies are required in the chaos-based cryptology literature.

Küçükgül, Azime; Yüngül, Mücahit; Kahraman, Zuhal; Dörücü, Mustafa

In this study, the blood parameters of catfish (Silurus glanis Linnaeus, 1758) inhabiting Celik Lake (Adiyaman, Turkey) were investigated. The study was conducted between April 2013 and October 2013. After obtaining a blood sample from each catfish has been hematologically analyzed. Then, the water temperature, dissolved oxygen, pH, calcium, magnesium and nitrate values were determined at before breeding (April), breeding period (June-July) and after breeding of fish (October) and the impacts of these data on hematological values were investigated. According to this study, it was observed that the hematological values obtained at before breeding period, breeding and after the breeding period were affected by the water quality parameters.

The Evaluation of Imidacloprid Remediation in Soil Media by Two Bacterial Strains

    Erguven, Gokhan Onder; Yildirim, Numan

Imidacloprid (C9H10ClN5O2) is used as the most recommended type of insecticide in vegetable farming worldwide. Two types of bacteria (Methylobacterium radiotolerans and Microbacterium arthrosphaerae) were isolated from a corn farming field in the Thrace region of Turkey, and then consortia of these bacteria were prepared from equal volumes of 107 CFU/ml for each bacterium type. Imidacloprid remediation studies were carried out during 18 days in soil test units. The water filtered from these soil test units was determined for chemical oxygen demand (COD) and biochemical oxygen demand (BOD5) to determine the optimum concentration of microorganisms to ascertain the best removal efficiency of Imidacloprid. COD removal rates were 98.7%, 96.4% and 51.6% with 80, 40, and 20 ml volumes of the consortia of bacteria, respectively, at the end of 18 days. The BOD5 removal rates were 88.4%, 78.6% and 49.9% in the same volumes of bacteria, respectively. As a result of this study, we have found that this bacterial consortium is very effective for the bioremediation of this insecticide at the two volumes of 40 and 80 ml, both being better than 20 ml.
