An Evaluation of Living Conditions and Dietary Habits of Seasonal Migrant Agricultural Workers: The Example of Turkey

    Orhan, İlksen; Koçak, Hatice Serap

Objective: The nutritional status of seasonal migrant agricultural workers is negatively affected by problems with working conditions, wages, accommodations, and living conditions. This study aimed to investigate the living conditions, dietary habits, and food consumption frequency of seasonal migrant agricultural workers in Turkey. Methods: This descriptive, cross-sectional study was conducted in July and August 2022 in the neighborhoods of Akçadağ district in Malatya Province, Turkey. The sample of the study consisted of 262 seasonal migrant agricultural workers aged 15 and over who came to the region for the apricot harvest. The data were obtained using the face-to-face interview technique via a two-part questionnaire including questions on socio-demographic characteristics, living conditions, dietary behaviors and food consumption frequency. Results: The mean age of the seasonal migrant agricultural workers was 24.16 ± 0.75, and they worked 12.01 ± 0.10 hours per day on average. It was determined 74.8% of the workers had access to clean water, and 50.4% did not think they had an adequate and balanced diet. It was found only 57.3% of the workers had a normal body mass index, 80.2% never ate fish, 53.8% never ate red meat, and 67.2% never drank milk, while only 34.4% were able to eat seasonal vegetables. Conclusion: The findings of the study show that seasonal migrant agricultural workers in Turkey do not have suitable conditions in terms of food and accommodations, and their working conditions, wages, and health conditions are inadequate. These deficiencies have a negative effect on workers’ quality of life and health status.

Integrated Approach Using Intuitionistic Fuzzy Multicriteria Decision-Making to Support Classifier Selection for Technology Adoption in Patients with Parkinson Disease: Algorithm Development and Validation

Ortiz-Barrios, Miguel; Cleland, Ian; Donnelly, Mark; Gul, Muhammet; Yucesan, Melih; Jiménez-Delgado, Genett Isabel; Nugent, Chris; Madrid-Sierra, Stephany

Background: Parkinson disease (PD) is reported to be among the most prevalent neurodegenerative diseases globally, presenting ongoing challenges and increasing burden on health care systems. In an effort to support patients with PD, their carers, and the wider health care sector to manage this incurable condition, the focus has begun to shift away from traditional treatments. One of the most contemporary treatments includes prescribing assistive technologies (ATs), which are viewed as a way to promote independent living and deliver remote care. However, the uptake of these ATs is varied, with some users not ready or willing to accept all forms of AT and others only willing to adopt low-technology solutions. Consequently, to manage both the demands on resources and the efficiency with which ATs are deployed, new approaches are needed to automatically assess or predict a user’s likelihood to accept and adopt a particular AT before it is prescribed. Classification algorithms can be used to automatically consider the range of factors impacting AT adoption likelihood, thereby potentially supporting more effective AT allocation. From a computational perspective, different classification algorithms and selection criteria offer various opportunities and challenges to address this need. Objective: This paper presents a novel hybrid multicriteria decision-making approach to support classifier selection in technology adoption processes involving patients with PD. Methods: First, the intuitionistic fuzzy analytic hierarchy process (IF-AHP) was implemented to calculate the relative priorities of criteria and subcriteria considering experts’ knowledge and uncertainty. Second, the intuitionistic fuzzy decision-making trial and evaluation laboratory (IF-DEMATEL) was applied to evaluate the cause-effect relationships among criteria/subcriteria. Finally, the combined compromise solution (CoCoSo) was used to rank the candidate classifiers based on their capability to model the technology adoption. Results: We conducted a study involving a mobile smartphone solution to validate the proposed methodology. Structure (F5) was identified as the factor with the highest relative priority (overall weight=0.214), while adaptability (F4) (D-R=1.234) was found to be the most influencing aspect when selecting classifiers for technology adoption in patients with PD. In this case, the most appropriate algorithm for supporting technology adoption in patients with PD was the A3 - J48 decision tree (M3=2.5592). The results obtained by comparing the CoCoSo method in the proposed approach with 2 alternative methods; (simple additive weighting and technique for order of preference by similarity to ideal solution) support the accuracy and applicability of the proposed methodology. It was observed that the final scores of the algorithms in each method were highly correlated (Pearson correlation coefficient >0.8). Conclusions: The IF-AHP-IF-DEMATEL-CoCoSo approach helped to identify classification algorithms that do not just discriminate between good and bad adopters of assistive technologies within the Parkinson population but also consider technology-specific features like design, quality, and compatibility that make these classifiers easily implementable by clinicians in the health care system.

Heavy Metals in Cetraria islandica: Health Risk Assessment

Topal, Murat; Arslan Topal, E. Işıl; Öbek, Erdal; Aslan, Ali

In this chapter, potential human health risk of the heavy metals associated with usage of Cetraria islandica were evaluated. Heavy metals (lead, cadmium, manganese, chromium, copper, zinc, and nickel) were determined in Cetraria islandica. Highest and lowest heavy metal values were 87 ± 4.3 mg/kg for manganese (Mn) and 0.12 ± 0.01 mg/kg for cadmium (Cd). When potential health risk was assessed, the doses of exposure for man, woman, and child followed the order of bread > tea > dermal. Risk of health for bread and tea were child > woman > man. Also, risk of health for dermal was woman > child > man. Non-carcinogenic risk was woman > child > man for dermal way. Non-carcinogenic risks were child > woman > man for dietary. Highest total hazard index (THI) was 6.33 for chromium (Cr), lowest THI was 0.22 for zinc (Zn). THIs were zinc < copper < cadmium < nickel < lead < manganese < chromium. The THIs were higher than 1 for chromium, manganese and lead. Total highest carcinogenic value was 1.73E−03 for Ni and minimum was 1.19 E−05 for lead. Carcinogenic risks for bread (cadmium, nickel and chromium) were high. As a result, it was determined that Cetraria islandica may cause cancer risk if consumed as additive in bread. It was determined that if Cetraria islandica was consumed as tea and cream, there would be no risk of cancer and could not adversely affect human health.

Changes in quality characteristics and inactivation of Salmonella in cake, including oleogel used as a fat replacer, baked with two different methods

Ozdemir-Orhan, Necla; Eroglu, Zeynep; Omac, Basri

This is the first study to assess the impact of substitution of shortening (50%) with sunflower-beeswax oleogel in cake formulations on the inactivation kinetics of Salmonella spp. and the quality attributes of cakes baked in conventional (CO) and microwave (MWO) ovens. Four distinct cake samples were examined in the study: Cake samples containing oleogel prepared in two different ovens (Oleo-Cake-CO and Oleo-Cake-MWO) and control cake samples baked in two different ovens (Cont-Cake-CO and Cont-Cake-MWO). The control-batter and oleogel-batter demonstrated shear thinning behavior (pseudoplastic, n < 1), with a good fit to the Power Law model, but viscosity and viscoelastic moduli decreased when the oleogel was used in place of shortening in cake recipes. In addition, the Cont-Cake-MWO had the greatest special volume value (2.31 ± 0.04 mL/g), whereas the Oleo-Cake-CO had the lowest (1.65 ± 0.02 mL/g) (p < 0.05). Furthermore, compared to the samples baked with CO, lower water activity and moisture values (p < 0.05) were observed in the samples baked in MWO due to their higher cooking loss values (p < 0.05). In all baking techniques, the addition of oleogel to the cake formula, used as a fat substitute, resulted in higher values for cohesiveness, hardness, springiness, and chewiness (p < 0.05). As a result, the inactivation of Salmonella in cakes slightly reduced with using oleogel as a fat substitute (p > 0.05), whereas it affected some quality properties of cakes baked with both heat treatments.

    Aksakal, B.; Karadogan, S.A.; Aslan, N.; Fidan, F.; Yilmazer, Y.; Sezek, S.

Zinc (Zn) and its alloys exhibit great potential for utilization in biodegradable bone implants. Zn-1Cu biodegradable alloy was produced and were cold rolled at two different deformation rates of 47 and 61%. The samples have been bioceramic coated with the sol–gel method and microstructure-mechanical property changes, corrosion behavior and biocompatibility of the samples were investigated. They were characterized by Optical, SEM, XRD and wettability analysis. The rolled samples showed a significant increase in hardness when compared to the non-rolled samples. The unrolled and 47% rolled samples showed better corrosion resistance compared to 61% rolled samples. Antibacterial effects of the base and sol–gel-coated groups showed higher cell viability ratios than the uncoated groups. Cell viability increased significantly in 47% of the rolled samples after 24, 48, and 72 h, however decreased by up to 70% in 61% of the rolled samples. Graphical abstract: (Figure presented.).

Synthesis and characterization of chitosan-based pH-sensitive biofilm: An experimental design approach for release of vitamin B12

Onal, Ali; Demir, Hulya; Ince, Olcay Kaplan; Ince, Muharrem

Hydrogels because of their unique potentials, such as highwater content and hydrophilicity, are of interest for the controlled release of drug molecules. In the present study, a biofilm was produced using chitosan, a natural polymer. Characterization analyses of the synthesized biofilm were performed using Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), thermogravimetric analysis-differential thermal analysis, x-ray diffraction, and scanning electron microscopy-energy dispersive x-ray spectrometry. The analysis results of the film before loading were compared to the analysis made after adding vitamin B12 to the film. The release percentage of vitamin B12 was investigated by using ultraviolet-visible spectrophotometery. The FT-IR bands of vitamin B12 were in the range of 2,800-3,500 cm-1 and 1,000 cm-1-1,750 cm-1. When pH increased from 3 to 7, release of vitamin B12 from the biopolymer increased up to pH 5. While examining the release potential, parameters, such as pH, initial concentration of vitamin B12, release time, and solution volume, were optimized by using response surface methodology. It was determined that with the increase in release time and the initial concentration, pH contributed positively to the release of vitamin B12. The following conditions were determined for release of vitamin B12 from the biofilm: pH: 4.2, initial concentration of vitamin B12: 54.0 mg L-1, the release time: 117 min, and volume of solution: 2.1 mL. The analysis of variance results showed that the determination coefficients for the use of synthesized biofilm in vitamin B12 release were high and R2 =0.9704.

Background: Coffee is considered one of the most preferred and consumed beverage types in the world, and caffeine is known to increase physical performance due to its ergogenic properties. The aim of this study is to examine the effects of coffee consumption in different forms on cortisol, testosterone, lactic acid and anaerobic performance levels. Methods: A total of 15 licensed male football players participated in the research voluntarily. The research was implemented in a single-blind, counterbalanced, randomized and crossover study design. Participants were given caffeinated coffee (CK), decaffeinated coffee (placebo) (DK), powdered caffeine (in a gelatin capsule) (PC) and powdered placebo (maltodextrin in a capsule) (PM) on different days, and the Wingate test protocol was performed after the warm-up protocol. Blood samples were collected post-test. Cortisol, testosterone and lactic acid levels in the serum samples taken were determined by the ELISA method. Results: As a result, it was revealed that caffeinated coffee given to participants who exercise increased anaerobic power. However, it was observed that lactic acid levels were higher in placebo and decaffeinated coffee. The highest level of cortisol was found in caffeinated coffee and powdered caffeine compared to the placebo. Testosterone values were observed to be highest in caffeinated coffee and decaffeinated coffee compared to a placebo. Conclusions: The study suggests that the type of caffeine is a factor that affects absorption rate, which impacts performance and hormone levels.

Effect Of The Actıvatıon Force On The Healıng Level Of Asphalt Mıxture Wıth Embedded Capsules

Yalcin, Erkut; Yilmaz, Mehmet; Yalcin, Beyza Furtana; El Naggar, H.; Barros, J.; Cachim, P.

By increasing the asphalt mixtures' inherent capacity for self-healing, encapsulated rejuvenators can extend the service lives of asphalt pavements. The capsules are shattered when crack damage occurs, allowing the rejuvenator ingredient to seep into the cracks. In this work, a brand-new kind of capsule was created. Sunflower oil was a rejuvenator in these capsules. We looked at how well asphalt mixture samples with and without capsules self-healed under static loading. The capacity for self-healing of asphalt mixtures incorporating a novel class of capsules that contain sunflower oil as a rejuvenating agent. For this reason, the ability of the rejuvenating ingredient to diffuse inside of samples of virgin bitumen and the healing potential of combinations of cracked asphalt containing capsules have both been assessed. Due to the mechanical properties of the polymeric capsules examined. Then, using a unique mechanical test, the impact of capsule content on the crack-healing characteristics of asphalt mixtures was assessed at various healing durations (from 5 to 216h) and loads (from 0 to 85kN). As the applied load increases, the healing levels of the asphalt samples with capsules rise; later, the healing levels of the asphalt samples with capsule remain constant. According to the findings, the maximal healing level was typically attained after 96 hours and remained constant until 216 hours.

Ochratoxin a levels in Turkish coffee: a probabilistic health risk assessment via Monte Carlo simulation

Sevim, Sumeyra; Macit, Arife; Kizil, Mevlude

Throughout history, Turkish coffee has been the most widely consumed type of coffee in Turkey. Therefore, the goal of this study was to determine the amount of ochratoxin A (OTA) present in Turkish coffee and to analyze any potential health hazards. A total of 41 Turkish coffees were collected and analyzed for OTA activity using a competitive enzyme immunoassay (ELISA). Furthermore, dietary exposure and health risk assessments for the Turkish population were calculated based on analytical results and coffee consumption data from the Turkish Nutrition and Health Survey 2019 (TNHS-2019) in three age categories (15–18, 19–64, and 65 + years). Nine of the samples contained more than 2.5 μg/kg OTA, with an average of 5.24 μg/kg. The OTA concentration in 3 samples exceeded the permissible maximum limit (5 μg/kg) established by Turkish legislation, and the mean concentration was 8.41 μg/kg. A margin of exposure (MOE) approach was used for risk characterization, considering both non-neoplastic and neoplastic consequences. There were no concerns about health risks because MOEs were more than 10,000 for all categories. Although the levels of OTA analyzed in Turkish coffee did not pose a risk to individuals in the three age categories, emphasis should be placed on minimizing and controlling OTA concentrations in Turkish coffee. Additionally, it is also necessary to consider other food sources that could contribute to OTA exposure.

Unraveling the ecotoxicological effects of micro and nano-plastics on aquatic organisms and human health

Naz, Saima; Chatha, Ahmad Manan Mustafa; Khan, Nisar Ahmed; Ullah, Qudrat; Zaman, Faisal; Qadeer, Abdul; Khan, Ibrar Muhammad; Danabas, Durali; Kiran, Azka; Skalickova, Sylvie

Plastic pollution ranks among the most severe environmental disasters caused by humans, generating millions of tonnes of waste annually. The extensive and unregulated use of plastics has led to ecotoxicity and environmental imbalance. Microplastics (MPs) are prevalent in aquatic environments, and these MPs further degrade into even smaller particles known as nano-plastics (NPs). Both MPs and NPs impact the environment by readily absorbing organic pollutants and pathogens from their surroundings, owing to their bigger surface area to volume ratio. This review focuses on the source of origin, bioaccumulation, and potential impact of MPs and NPs on aquatic organisms and human health. Additionally, the review explores various methods employed for identification and quantification of these particles in aquatic ecosystems. Sufficient information is available on their characteristics, distributions, and effects on marine ecosystems compared with freshwater ecosystems. For plastic particles <10 μm, more toxicological effects were observed compared with larger size particles, in aquatic life. Understanding the mechanism of action and ecotoxicological effects of micro/nano-plastics on the health of aquatic life across various trophic levels, as well as human health, is of utmost importance. We address knowledge gaps and provide insights into future research approaches for a better understanding of the interactive mechanisms between binary pollutants.

Investigation of Sexual Distress in Pregnant Women: A Turkish Multi-center Study

Koç, Emine; Baltacı, Nazlı; Yüksekol, Özlem Doğan; Gürel, Reyyan; Ulucan, Mihriban

Introduction: During pregnancy, sexual distress is common, but its prevalence and underlying factors require elucidation. This study was performed to investigate sexual distress in pregnant women. Methods: This research was designed as a descriptive and multi-center study. The study included 2365 pregnant women from 6 geographical regions of Turkey between April 1, 2022, and February 1, 2023. Data was collected using the “Pregnant Information Form” and “Female Sexual Distress Scale-Revised (FDS-R).” Descriptive statistics, independent sample t-test, analysis of variance, and the Pearson correlation test were used for data analysis. Results: Herein, 46.1% of pregnant women experienced sexual distress, and the mean FDS-R score of the study participants was 14.49. Participants who were dissatisfied with their sexual life before and during pregnancy (p < 0.001), those who did not have sexual intercourse during pregnancy (p < 0.001), those who experienced decreased sexual desire during pregnancy (p < 0.001), those who did not receive sexual education during pregnancy (p < 0.001), and those who experienced problems when engaging in sexual intercourse during pregnancy (p < 0.001) experienced more sexual distress. Sexual distress increased when the mean age and the number of pregnancies and children increased, whereas it decreased when the gestational week increased. Conclusions: Approximately half of the pregnant women included in the study experienced sexual distress. The findings highlight the importance of midwives and nurses encouraging pregnant women to discuss their sexuality. Policy implications: The findings of this study show that sexual distress during pregnancy is common and affected by some factors related to personal and sexual life during pregnancy. This result provides evidence of the need to develop culturally appropriate interventions and policies that include sexual partners in the context of improving pregnant women's sexual distress, sexual health, good family relationships and mental health.

Integrating discrete-event simulation and artificial intelligence for shortening bed waiting times in hospitalization departments during respiratory disease seasons

Ortiz-Barrios, Miguel; Ishizaka, Alessio; Barbati, Maria; Arias-Fonseca, Sebastián; Khan, Jehangir; Gul, Muhammet; Yücesan, Melih; Alfaro-Saíz, Juan-Jose; Pérez-Aguilar, Armando

Seasonal Respiratory Diseases (SRDs) usually produce a heightened number of Emergency Department (ED) attendances due to their rapid dissemination within the community and the ineffective prevention measures. Such a context requires effective management of the emergency care processes to provide in-time diagnosis and treatment to infected patients. Nonetheless, EDs have evidenced severe operational deficiencies during these periods, thereby provoking extended bed waiting times in Hospitalization Departments (HDs). Therefore, this paper presents a hybrid approach merging Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Discrete-Event Simulation (DES) to shorten the bed waiting times in HDs considering patient records collated in the first emergency care stages. First, we implemented Random Forest (RF) to estimate the probability of respiratory worsening based on sociodemographic and clinical patient data. Second, we inserted these probabilities into a DES model mimicking the emergency care from the admission to the HD. We then pretested different HD configurations and strategies seeking to reduce the HD bed waiting time. A case study of a European hospital group was used to validate the suggested framework. The AI-DES model enabled decision-makers to identify an improvement proposal with hospitalization bed waiting time lessening, oscillating between 7.93 and 7.98 h.

Effect of naproxen on oxidative stress biomarkers in Gammarus pulex; [Efecto del naproxeno sobre los biomarcadores de estrés oxidativo en Gammarus pulex]

    Seker, Engin

Non–steroidal anti–inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) are a widely prescribed medication class that is used in the treatment of numerous conditions worldwide. Of these drugs, naproxen is the most commonly used NSAID. Following administration, non–steroidal anti–inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) such as naproxen are eliminated from the body in either their original chemical form or as metabolites, ultimately entering the aquatic environment. The current study sought to show the impacts of naproxen on the oxidant/antioxidant status of Gammarus pulex, an aquatic invertebrate (Amphipoda). Gammarus pulex were exposed to sublethal concentrations of naproxen (3.44, 6.87 and 13.75 mg·L-1) for 96 hours (h). Whole body tissue samples were collected after 24, 48 and 96 h of exposure and analysed to determine the oxidant/antioxidant status by quantifying malondialdehyde (MDA) and total glutathione levels (GSH), and superoxide dismutase (SOD), and catalase (CAT) activities of the G. pulex. The level of MDA exhibited a remarkable increase, while the endogenous GSH level showed a significant depletion in tested whole body tissues in a time–dependent manner after naproxen treatment of G. pulex. In G. pulex exposed to the highest dose of naproxen; decreases in GSH activity, SOD and CAT activities were observed. The SOD activity did not show a discernible rise in statistics after 24 and 48 h of exposure, however, a difference was observed after 96 h compared to the control group (P<0.05). The findings of this study demonstrated the capacity of naproxen to initiate oxidative stress and elevate MDA levels in G. pulex, even at remarkably low concentrations. This study emphasizes that it is essential to develop effective methodologies to impede naproxen entry into the aquatic environment.

Şahal, Hakan; Öz, Samet; Keskin, Tuba; Tekin, Suat; Canpolat, Erdal; Kaya, Mehmet

Synthesis of four sulfa drug derivatives (L1–L4) and Zn(II) complexes derived from sulfonamide group antibiotic substances was carried out using the hydrothermal technique (HT) and their structures of the obtained compounds were explained using elemental analysis (EA), FT-IR and NMR (1H- and 13C-). Cytotoxic activities of four novel sulfa drug based-Schiff base compounds and their Zn(II) complexes were determined by 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyl-2H-tetrazolium bromide (MTT) assay using MCF-7 (human breast cancer), Caco-2 (human colorectal adenocarcinoma), A2780 (human ovarian cancer) and LNCaP (human prostate adenocarcinoma) cell lines. LogIC50 values of all obtained compounds were computed with the Graphpad Prism 6 program after 24 h of treatment for MCF-7, Caco-2, A2780 and LNCaP cells. Comet assay experiments were performed using LogIC50 concentrations of all compounds to determine DNA damage. Based on the data obtained, all compounds significantly decreased MCF-7, Caco-2, A2780 and LNCaP cell viability compared to the control groups (p < 0.05).

Development of new generation cakes fortified with zinc oxide nanoparticles

Kaplan Ince, Olcay; Aydogdu, Burcu; Ince, Muharrem

This study aimed to develop new generation cakes that were fortified with calcined ZnO nanoparticles (CZnO), uncalcined ZnO nanoparticles (UCZnO), beads (B(CZnO)) synthesized by encapsulating the CZnO with sodium alginate (SA), and the beads (B(UCZnO)) synthesized by encapsulating the UCZnO with sodium alginate (SA) and investigated the zinc (Zn) release in fortified cakes in simulated body fluids (SBF). The present study represents a novel method for increasing intestinal absorption and bioavailability of dietary zinc with zinc nanoparticles for use in the preparation of Zn fortified cakes as a dietary supplement to compensate for zinc deficiency in humans. The results revealed that a rapid increase in the release time and rate in the SGF solution was noted in the UCZnO added cakes. It was attributed to increased intestinal absorption and bioavailability as a result of the ultra-small size of ZnO. Also, ZnO release kinetics in SBF was also studied and data were adjusted into different kinetic models involving zero-order, first-order, Higuchi, and Korsmeyer–Peppas models. The present investigation recommends adding UCZnO to the cakes to control and increase the release from the cakes.

The relationship between parental attitude toward childhood epilepsy and spiritual orientation

    Kasimoğlu, Necla; Gürarslan Baş, Nazan

Aim: The aim of this study is to evaluate the relationship between parental attitudes toward childhood epilepsy and spiritual orientations. Methods: This descriptive study was conducted online between May and July 2022 with 417 parents residing in the eastern part of Turkey. Data were collected using a descriptive information form, the Social Attitudes Scale toward Childhood Epilepsies, and the Spiritual Orientation Scale. The obtained data were analyzed using the SPSS software package, employing descriptive statistics such as frequency, percentage, mean, standard deviation, as well as inferential statistics including independent samples t-test, ANOVA, multiple linear regression and correlation tests. Results: The Total Social Attitudes Scale Score toward Childhood Epilepsies was calculated as 45.10 ± 7.81, and the Spiritual Orientation Scale Score was 89.88 ± 30.30 for parents with an average age of 36.64 ± 8.26. It was found statistically significant and high (p > 0.05) for parents who are female, have a higher level of education, and have previously received education about epilepsy regarding both the Total Social Attitudes Scale Score toward Childhood Epilepsies and the Spiritual Orientation Scale Score. A statistically significant positive correlation was found between the Total Social Attitudes Scale Score toward Childhood Epilepsies and the Spiritual Orientation Scale Score. Conclusion: According to the findings of the research, parents' attitudes towards childhood epilepsy are positive, and their spiritual orientation levels are high. As parents' spiritual orientation levels increase, their positive attitudes towards childhood epilepsy also increase.

Influence of Plastic Deformation and Hydroxyapatite Coating on Structure, Mechanical, Corrosion, Antibacterial and Cell Viability Properties of Zinc Based Biodegradable Alloys

Aksakal, B.; Isın, Ege; Aslan, N.; Cihangir, S.; Sezek, S.; Yilmazer, Yasemin

Zinc (Zn)-based biodegradable alloys have been at the forefront of absorbable biomaterial research in recent years due to their high biocompatibility and corrosion rates. The arc melting process was used to produce the Zn–1Cu–1Ag biodegradable alloy. The influence of different plastic deformation rates on the microstructure of the material was examined after the cold rolling at deformation rates of 47% and 61%. The undeformed and deformed alloys have been hydroxyapatite-coated using the electrophoretic deposition process to improve its surface, corrosion, and bioactivity properties. Optical, XRD, SEM, and EDS examinations were used to analyze the samples’ uncoated, coated, and rolled-unrolled forms. The nucleation of the (Ag, Cu)Zn4 secondary phase was formed during the rolling process. Hardness and compression tests were used to determine the mechanical properties of cast and rolled alloys, and in vitro corrosion tests were carried out in simulated body fluid. Antimicrobial and cell viability tests are executed to demonstrate the biocompatibility of the deformed and HA-coated Zn–1Cu–1Ag alloy. The mechanical properties were improved after the rolling process, with the highest results found in 47% of the rolled samples exhibiting a compressive strength of 412.65 ± 0.5 MPa and 61% of the rolled samples exhibiting a hardness value of 88.1 ± 0.5 HV. The samples that were rolled (61%) and coated with hydroxyapatite (HA) exhibited the highest level of corrosion resistance. The antimicrobial tests revealed that the rolled and HA coated Zn1Cu1Ag groups exhibited greater inhibition rates (47 and 61%) compared to the other groups when tested against E. coli. The HA-coated groups exhibited good cell viability ratios, with the maximum viability seen in the rolled and HA-coated group at 47%.

Genotoxic effects of copper nanoparticles on Vicia pannonica Crantz. root meristem cells

    Tasar, Neslihan

With the increasing use of metal nanoparticles, their access to the food chain has become the main concern for scientists. The present study sheds light on the copper nanoparticles (Cu NPs), which are widely used in many industries today. For this purpose, Vicia pannonica Crantz., a common fodder plant, was used and exposed to metal-based Cu NPs. To determine the genotoxic effects on root meristem cells, total of 3 different concentrations (50 ppm, 150 ppm, and 300 ppm) of Cu NPs and the control in deionized water solutions were prepared. The determination of the accumulation and elimination of Cu NPs in Vicia pannonica used in the study was carried out using with X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), SEM element mapping, and energy dispersive X-ray diffraction (EDS) characteristic spectrum analysis. All doses of Cu NPs caused significant decreases in the Mitotic index of V. pannonica meristem cells compared to the control. Multiple analyzes carried out in the study showed that Cu NPs caused abnormalities in cell division such as C-metaphase, polar aberration, deconstructed anaphase, chromosome breakage, loss of genetic material, failure to assemble in the metaphase plate, deconstructed metaphase, asynchronous division remaining chromosome in metaphase, adhesion, deconstructed prophase, advanced chromosomes, and chromosome bridges in anaphase. Results support that Cu NPs have a genotoxic effect on V. pannonica.
