Bio-functions of carvacrol-supplemented feeds on lipopolysaccharide-induced rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss Walbaum, 1792)

    Kucukgul, A.; Gulsafak, I

To investigate the effects of carvacrol supplementation in rainbow trout induced by lipopolysaccharide (LPS), relative gene expressions levels of some pro-inflammatory cytokines and apoptosis markers in kidney and liver were measured. Fish with a mean weight of 44.71 +/- 1.33 g were studied using four different treatments with three replicates each. Inflammation and apoptosis were performed using LPS of Escherichia coli (25 mu g ml(-1)) except in the control group and only carvacrol (100 mu g ml(-1) diet) containing diets were fed to this group (CAR). The last group was the infected fish fed carvacrol supplemented diet (+CAR). Kidney and liver tissues were removed 3 days after to determine the levels of interleukin-1 beta (IL-1 beta), interferon gamma (INF-gamma), caspase 3 (Cas 3), caspase 8 (Cas 8) using Real-Time PCR analyses. IL-1 beta expressions of both kidney and liver was significantly decreased (12.9 and 2.14 fold, respectively) in LPS treated cells (p<0.05). While IFN-gamma expression was up regulated in kidney, it had down regulation in liver. LPS decreased both Cas 3 and 8 expressions in kidney but increased in liver. +CAR increased expressions of IL-1 beta and IFN-gamma compared with the control (up to 2-3 fold) in all tissues except caspase gene expressions that were similar in the control. In all tissues, IL-1 beta and IFN-gamma expressions increased in +CAR group, expect IFN-gamma in the kidney. However, Cas 3 and 8 expressions including apoptosis was induced by up-down regulations in all tissues compared to LPS-injected fish. The results showed that carvacrol had pro-inflammatory and apoptotic effects especially on liver tissue of LPS-induced inflammation model of Oncorhynchus mykiss.

CONVOLUTIONAL LONG-SHORT TERM MEMORY NETWORKS MODEL FOR LONG DURATION EEG SIGNAL CLASSIFICATION

    Baloglu, Ulas Baran; Yildirim, Ozal

Background and objective: Deep learning structures have recently achieved remarkable success in the field of machine learning. Convolutional neural networks (CNN) in image processing and long-short term memory (LSTM) in the time-series analysis are commonly used deep learning algorithms. Healthcare applications of deep learning algorithms provide important contributions for computer-aided diagnosis research. In this study, convolutional long-short term memory (CLSTM) network was used for automatic classification of EEG signals and automatic seizure detection. Methods: A new nine-layer deep network model consisting of convolutional and LSTM layers was designed. The signals processed in the convolutional layers were given as an input to the LSTM network whose outputs were processed in densely connected neural network layers. The EEG data is appropriate for a model having 1-D convolution layers. A bidirectional model was employed in the LSTM layer. Results: Bonn University EEG database with five different datasets was used for experimental studies. In this database, each dataset contains 23.6 s duration 100 single channel EEG segments which consist of 4097 dimensional samples (173.61 Hz). Eight two-class and three three-class clinical scenarios were examined. When the experimental results were evaluated, it was seen that the proposed model had high accuracy on both binary and ternary classification tasks. Conclusions: The proposed end-to-end learning structure showed a good performance without using any hand-crafted feature extraction or shallow classifiers to detect the seizures. The model does not require filtering, and also automatically learns to filter the input as well. As a result, the proposed model can process long duration EEG signals without applying segmentation, and can detect epileptic seizures automatically by using the correlation of ictal and interictal signals of raw data.

Gurger, Murat; Yilmaz, Erhan; Yilmaz, Seval; Once, Gokhan; Konuk, Mustafa; Kaya, Emre; Say, Yakup; Artas, Gokhan; Artas, Hakan

BackgroundThe positive effects of grape seed proanthocyanidin extract (GSPE) on bone health, which is a potent antioxidant, are known but its effects on fracture healing are not sufficiently covered in the literature. This study aims to investigate the effects of GSPE on fracture healing and biomechanics of healing bone.Materials and methodsSixty-four adult Wistar-Albino male rats were divided into 8 groups of 8 animals in each group. Osteotomy was performed to the right femurs of all groups except the negative control (G1) and positive control (G2) groups, and intramedullary Kirchner wire was used for fixation. GSPE was given to half of the rats (G2-G4-G6-G8) 100mg/kg/day by oral gavage. The rats were sacrificed on the tenth (G3-G4), twentieth (G5-G6), and thirtieth (G1-G2-G7-G8) days, respectively, and histopathological, radiological, and biomechanical examinations were performed.ResultsHistopathological examination of the specimens from the callus tissues revealed that bone healing was more prominent in the groups supplemented with GSPE (G4, G6, G8). There was a statistically significant improvement in radiological recovery scores and callus volumes in groups with GSPE. When biomechanical strengths were evaluated, it was found that GSPE increased bone strength not only in fracture groups but also in the positive control group (G2).ConclusionsAs a result, this study showed that GSPE, a potent anti-oxidant, had a positive effect on bone healing and improved mechanical strength of the healing bone.

Classification of myocardial infarction with multi-lead ECG signals and deep CNN

Baloglu, Ulas Baran; Talo, Muhammed; Yildirim, Ozal; Tan, Ru San; Acharya, U Rajendra

Myocardial infarction (MI), commonly known as heart attack, causes irreversible damage to heart muscles and even leads to death. Rapid and accurate diagnosis of MI is critical to avoid death. Blood tests and electrocardiogram (ECG) signals are used to diagnose acute MI. However, for an increase in blood enzyme values, a certain time must pass after the attack. This time lag may delay MI diagnosis. Hence, ECG diagnosis is still very important. Manual ECG interpretation requires expertise and is prone to inter-observer variability. Therefore, computer aided diagnosis may be useful in automatic detection of MI on ECG. In this study, a deep learning model with an end-to-end structure on the standard 12-lead ECG signal for the diagnosis of MI is proposed. For this purpose, the most commonly used technique, convolutional neural network (CNN) is used. Our trained CNN model with the proposed architecture yielded impressive accuracy and sensitivity performance over 99.00% for MI diagnosis on all ECG lead signals. Thus, the proposed model has the potential to provide high performance on MI detection which can be used in wearable technologies and intensive care units.

Ghanaian Mangrove Wetland Endophytic Fungus, Penicillium herquei strain BRS2A-AR produces (9Z, 11E)-13-oxooctadeca-9,11-dienoic acid with activity against Trichomonas mobilensis

Hayibor, Kennedy; Kwain, Samuel; Osei, Enoch; Nartey, Adwoa Padiki; Tetevi, Gilbert Mawuli; Owusu, Kofi Baffour-Awuah; Camas, Mustafa; Camas, Anil Sazak; Kyeremeh, Kwaku

Sub-Sahara Africa is burdened with a high incidence of parasitic infections, including schistosomiasis, trypanosomiasis, trichomoniasis, and leishmaniasis. Currently, there is a rapid widespread development of resistance to prescription drugs for these neglected diseases. Microbes provide the largest chemical and biological diversity in drug discovery screening programs; therefore, our project seeks to explore microbes in the sub-region for new drugs. The oxylipin (9Z,11E)-13-oxooctadeca-9,11-dienoic acid (1) was isolated from the Ghanaian endophytic fungus, Penicillium herquei strain BRS2A-AR obtained from the leaves of a Laguncularia racemosa tree growing on the banks of the River Butre in the Western Regional wetlands of Ghana. Compound 1 was isolated on reverse phase HPLC at tR of 34.3 minutes. The structure of compound 1 was confirmed by a combination of mass spectrometry, 1D and 2D-NMR techniques. Compound 1 showed minimal antiparasitic activity when tested against Plasmodium falciparum 3d7 (IC50>100µM; aretesunate, IC50 36nm), Trypanosoma brucei brucei (IC50>100µM; Coptis japonica, IC50 8.20µM), Leishmani donovani (IC50>100µM; amphotericin B, IC50 0.32µM) and Leishmania major (IC50>100µM; amphotericin B, IC50 0.31µM). Compound 1 produced IC50 of 44.47µM when tested against Trichomonas mobilensis with metronidazole (IC50 5.20µM) as standard. These results show the potential to further engineer the structure of compound 1 into a potent anti-Trichomonas scaffold.

Regulation of signaling pathways by β-elemene in cancer progression and metastasis

Qureshi, Muhammad Z.; Attar, Rukset; Romero, Mirna A.; Sabitaliyevich, Uteuliyev Y.; Nurmurzayevich, Sadykov B.; Ozturk, Ozlem; Wakim, Lara H.; Lin, Xiukun; Ozbey, Ulku; Yelekenova, Armida Bakhytbekovna

Entry of β-elemene into various phases of clinical trials advocates its significance as a premium candidate likely to gain access to mainstream medicine. Based on the insights gleaned from decades of research, it seems increasingly transparent that β-elemene has shown significant ability to modulate multiple cell signaling pathways in different cancers. We partition this multicomponent review into how β-elemene strategically modulates various signal transduction cascades. We have individually summarized regulation of tumor necrosis factor related apoptosis-inducing ligand, signal transducers and activators of transcription, transforming growth factor/SMAD, NOTCH, and mammalian target of rapamycin pathways by β-elemene. Last, we will discuss the results of clinical trials of β-elemene and how effectively we can use these findings to stratify patients who can benefit most from β-elemene.

Apigenin as an effective anticancer natural product: Spotlight on TRAIL, WNT/β-catenin, JAK-STAT pathways, and microRNAs

Ozbey, Ulku; Attar, Rukset; Romero, Mirna Azalea; Alhewairini, Saleh S; Afshar, Behnaz; Uteuliev, Yerzhan Sabitaliyevich; Hanna-Wakim, Lara; Ozcelik, Beraat; Farooqi, Ammad Ahmad

Wealth of information gleaned from decades of high-impact research work; scientists have disentangled the complicated web of versatile regulators that underlie cancer development and progression. Use of structural biology approaches and functional genomics have helped us to gain new insights into complex nature of cancer, and it is now clear that genetic/epigenetic mutations, overexpression of oncogenes, inactivation of tumor suppressors, loss of apoptosis, and versatility of protein binding partners have contributory roles in carcinogenesis and metastatic spread. It is becoming progressively more understandable that reprogramming of gene expression during and nontranscriptional changes during cancer development and progression are initiated and controlled by deregulated signal transduction cascades, all of which collectively create an incalculable complexity. Data obtained through preclinical and clinical trials revealed that alterations in the targeted oncogenes and other downstream, and parallel pathways played a central role in the development of resistance against different therapeutics. Phytochemicals have regained limelight, and different natural products are currently being tested for efficacy in preclinical studies. Apigenin, a plant-derived flavonoid has considerable pharmacological value and is reportedly involved in the regulation of different signaling cascades. In this review, we have attempted to summarize rapidly evolving understanding of molecular biologists and pharmacologists about the potential of apigenin in the regulation of deregulated signaling pathways in different cancers. We have emphasized on the regulation of WNT/β-catenin and janus kinase/signal transducers and activators of transcription (JAK-STAT) pathways. We also comprehensively discuss how apigenin restored apoptosis in tumor necrosis factor-related apoptosis-inducing ligand (TRAIL)-resistant cancers. The review also gives a snapshot of microRNAs (miRNAs) that regulate wide-ranging biological processes, and it is now clear that each miRNA can control hundreds of gene targets. Apigenin was noted to upregulate miR-520b and miR-101 in different cancers to inhibit tumor growth. Moreover, apigenin-induced apoptotic rate was significantly higher when used in combination with miR-423-5p inhibitors or miR-138 mimics. Better comprehension of linear and integrated signaling pathways will be helpful in effective therapeutic targeting of deregulated signaling pathways to inhibit/prevent cancer.

    α-D-glucopyranosyl-(1→2)-[6-O-(L-tryptophanyl)-β-D-fructofuranoside]

Kyeremeh, Kwaku; Kwain, Samuel; Tetevi, Gilbert Mawuli; Camas, Anil Sazak; Camas, Mustafa; Dofuor, Aboagye Kwarteng; Deng, Hai; Jaspars, Marcel

The Mycobacterium sp. BRS2A-AR2 is an endophyte of the mangrove plant Rhizophora racemosa G. Mey., which grows along the banks of the River Butre, in theWestern Region of Ghana. Chemical profiling using 1H-NMR and HRESI-LC-MS of fermentation extracts produced by the strain led to the isolation of the new compound, α-D-Glucopyranosyl-(1→2)-[6-O-(L-tryptophanyl)-β- D-fructofuranoside] or simply tortomycoglycoside (1). Compound 1 is an aminoglycoside consisting of a tryptophan moiety esterified to a disaccharide made up of β-D-fructofuranose and α-D-glucopyranose sugars. The full structure of 1 was determined using UV, IR, 1D, 2D-NMR and HRESI-LC-MS data. When tested against Trypanosoma brucei subsp. brucei, the parasite responsible for Human African Trypanosomiasis in sub-Saharan Africa, 1 (IC50 11.25 µM) was just as effective as Coptis japonica (Thunb.) Makino. (IC50 8.20 µM). The extract of Coptis japonica (Thunb.) Makino. is routinely used as laboratory standard due to its powerful antitrypanosomal activity. It is possible that, compound 1 interferes with the normal uptake and metabolism of tryptophan in the T. brucei subsp. brucei parasite.

Digyaindoleacid A: 2-(1-(4-hydroxyphenyl)-3-oxobut-1-en-2-yloxy)-3-(1H-indol-3-yl)propanoic acid, a novel indole alkaloid

Kwain, Samuel; Tetevi, Gilbert Mawuli; Mensah, Thomas; Camas, Anil Sazak; Camas, Mustafa; Dofuor, Aboagye Kwarteng; Azerigyik, Faustus Akankperiwen; Deng, Hai; Jaspars, Marcel; Kyeremeh, Kwaku

Digyaindoleacid A (1) is one of the novel alkaloids produced by the Ghanaian Paenibacillus sp. DE2SH (GenBank Accession Number: MH091697) isolated from the mangrove rhizosphere soils of the Pterocarpus santalinoides tree growing in the wetlands of the Digya National Park, Brong Ahafo Region, Ghana. This compound was isolated on HPLC at tR ≈ 60 min and its structure determined by MS, 1D, and 2D-NMR data. When tested against Trypanosoma brucei subsp. brucei strain 927/4 GUTat10.1, 1 produced a half-maximal inhibitory concentration (IC50) 5.21 µM compared to the standard diminazene aceturate (IC50 = 1.86 µM). In the presence of normal mouse macrophages RAW 264.7, 1 displayed a higher selectivity towards T. brucei subsp. brucei (selectivity indices (SI) = 30.2) with low toxicity. This result is interesting given that the drug diminazene aceturate is considerably toxic and 1 is a natural product isolate. The structure of 1 incorporates the backbone of the amino acid tryptophan which is crucial in the metabolism of Trypanosoma brucei subsp. brucei strain 927/4 GUTat10.1. It is possible that 1, could interfere with the normal uptake and metabolism of tryptophan in the parasite. However, 1 (IC50 = 135.41 µM) produced weak antileishmanial activity when tested against Leishmania donovani (Laveran and Mesnil) Ross (D10).

Investigation of relaxation times in 5-fluorouracil and human serum albumin mixtures

Korunur, Sibel; Zengin, Bilgin; Yilmaz, Ali

Background: Human serum albumin (HSA) is often selected as a subject of any study because albumin is the most abundant protein in human blood plasma. NMR is recognized as a valuable method to determine the structure of proteins-ligand and protein-drug complexes. Objective - Aim of the study: In this study, protein drug interactions were investigated using 5-Fluorouracil anticancer drug and human serum albumin protein. Materials and methods: In this context 400 MHz NMR spectrometry was used and NMR relaxation rates in drug-albumin complex were investigated with respect to increase albumin concentration and increase in 5-Fluoro-uracil (5-FU)-albumin solution temperature. Results: The results of this study indicated that 5-FU had a weak association with albumin, and it easily dissociated from the protein to which it was attached. Conclusion: The obtained results also gave us useful information about molecular dynamics of drug-albumin interactions.

A new approach for arrhythmia classification using deep coded features and LSTM networks

Yildirim, Ozal; Baloglu, Ulas Baran; Tan, Ru-San; Ciaccio, Edward J.; Acharya, U. Rajendra

Background and objective: For diagnosis of arrhythmic heart problems, electrocardiogram (ECG)signals should be recorded and monitored. The long-term signal records obtained are analyzed by expert cardiologists. Devices such as the Holter monitor have limited hardware capabilities. For improved diagnostic capacity, it would be helpful to detect arrhythmic signals automatically. In this study, a novel approach is presented as a candidate solution for these issues. Methods: A convolutional auto-encoder (CAE)based nonlinear compression structure is implemented to reduce the signal size of arrhythmic beats. Long-short term memory (LSTM)classifiers are employed to automatically recognize arrhythmias using ECG features, which are deeply coded with the CAE network. Results: Based upon the coded ECG signals, both storage requirement and classification time were considerably reduced. In experimental studies conducted with the MIT-BIH arrhythmia database, ECG signals were compressed by an average 0.70% percentage root mean square difference (PRD)rate, and an accuracy of over 99.0% was observed. Conclusions: One of the significant contributions of this study is that the proposed approach can significantly reduce time duration when using LSTM networks for data analysis. Thus, a novel and effective approach was proposed for both ECG signal compression, and their high-performance automatic recognition, with very low computational cost.

    Paenidigyamycin g: 1-acetyl-2,4-dimethyl-3-phenethyl-1H-imidazol-3-ium

Tetevi, Gilbert Mawuli; Kwain, Samuel; Mensah, Thomas; Camas, Anil Sazak; Camas, Mustafa; Dofuor, Aboagye Kwarteng; Azerigyik, Faustus Akankperiwen; Oluwabusola, Emmanuel; Deng, Hai; Jaspars, Marcel

The Ghanaian Paenibacillus sp. DE2SH (GenBank Accession Number: MH091697) is a prolific producer of potent antiparasitic alkaloids. Further detailed study of the culture broth of this strain produced the compound Paenidigyamycin G (1), which is a derivative of the known antiparasitic compound Paenidigyamycin A (2). Compound (1) was isolated on HPLC at tR ≈ 37.5 min and its structure determined by IR, UV, MS, 1D, and 2D-NMR data. Compound 1 produced weak to moderate antileishmanial and antitrypanosomal activity when tested against Leishmania donovani (Laveran and Mesnil) Ross (D10) and Trypanosoma brucei subsp. brucei strain GUTat 3.1 with IC50 = 115.41 and 28.75 µM, respectively. This result is interesting since the parent compound 2 is known to possess consistent and potent antiparasitic activity. However, 1 displayed a promising selectivity profile towards T. brucei subsp. brucei due to its relatively low toxicity against normal mouse macrophages RAW 264.7 cells (SI = 8.70). Given that compound 1 is also the main metabolite found in the hexane fraction of all extracts produced by Paenibacillus sp. DE2SH when it is co-cultured with other bacteria strains, it must possess some unique biological functions which should make it an excellent candidate for further biological activity screening in other bioassays.

Evaluation of X-ray tomography contrast agents: A review of production, protocols, and biological applications

Koç, Mümin Mehmet; Aslan, Naim; Kao, Alexander P.; Barber, Asa H.

X-ray computed tomography is a strong tool that finds many applications both in medical applications and in the investigation of biological and nonbiological samples. In the clinics, X-ray tomography is widely used for diagnostic purposes whose three-dimensional imaging in high resolution helps physicians to obtain detailed image of investigated regions. Researchers in biological sciences and engineering use X-ray tomography because it is a nondestructive method to assess the structure of their samples. In both medical and biological applications, visualization of soft tissues and structures requires special treatment, in which special contrast agents are used. In this detailed report, molecule-based and nanoparticle-based contrast agents used in biological applications to enhance the image quality were compiled and reported. Special contrast agent applications and protocols to enhance the contrast for the biological applications and works to develop nanoparticle contrast agents to enhance the contrast for targeted drug delivery and general imaging applications were also assessed and listed.

Silver/Selenium/Chitosan-doped Hydroxyapatite coatings on biological NiTi alloy: In vitro biodegradation analysis

    Say, Y.; Aksakal, B.

Abstract: Nitinol (NiTi) substrates were bioceramic coated by single layer Hydroxyapatite (HA), double layer HA/Silver (Ag) and double-layered HA/Selenium (Se)–Chitosan (Cht) substitutions by sol–gel method. Surface morphologies and adhesion strengths of the obtained coatings were characterized by means of SEM, EDX, XRD, and adhesion tests. Crack-free coatings were obtained in single layer-HA (S1), double layer HA/Ag (S2), and double-layered HA/Selenium–Cht (S3) coatings on NiTi alloys executed via the sol–gel method. Degradation behavior was analyzed in via simulated body fluid (SBF) environment by means of weight loss (%) and ion release rates for 1–4 weeks of immersion periods. The degraded coating particles were measured and metallic ions were detected quantitatively by an inductively coupled plasma–mass spectrometer (ICP–MS). The results show that such coatings could minimize and/or prevent the degradation of metallic ions and weight loss (%) from the coated substrates. From the overall results, HA/Ag double layer biocomposite (S2)-coated NiTi substrates revealed the highest adhesion strength and lowest weight loss and degradation. It was also shown in all groups that the Ni ion release from the NiTi substrates was prevented by the coatings. [Figure not available: see fulltext.].

Investigation of the anti-apoptotic activity of ozone therapy in rainbow trout macrophages infected with Yersinia ruckeri

Küçükgül, Azime; Küçükgül, Altuğ; Gönenci, Ramazan; Özsoy, Şule Yurdagül; Kutlu, Banu; Işgör, Mehmet Mustafa

Yersinia ruckeri is the causal agent of enteric redmouth (ERM) in trout. This study aimed to investigate the effectiveness of nontoxic ozone on Y. ruckeri-infected trout cells in in vitro conditions. Rainbow trout macrophages (RTS-11) were exposed to Y. ruckeri for 24 h after being incubated with the ozonized medium at nontoxic concentration. Effective concentrations of nontoxic ozone (3 gamma) and bacteria (1.5 x 108 cfu/mL) were determined by viability tests. The expression of caspases 1, 3, 8, and 12 was determined by real-time PCR and protein levels investigated by ELISA method. Apoptotic-necrotic cell ratios were determined by acridine orange and ethidium bromide staining. Bacterial stimulations of caspases (1, 3, 8, and 12) were suppressed by ozone mostly at the translational level. While bacterial infection increased the count of apoptotic and necrotic cells at different stages, ozone significantly reduced this condition. Obtained data indicate possible use of nontoxic ozone as a safe and effective treatment alternative for increasing host defenses and eliminating the infection in the case of yersiniosis in fish.

Application of deep transfer learning for automated brain abnormality classification using MR images

Talo, Muhammed; Baloglu, Ulas Baran; Yıldırım, Özal; Rajendra Acharya, U.

Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is the most common imaging technique used to detect abnormal brain tumors. Traditionally, MRI images are analyzed manually by radiologists to detect the abnormal conditions in the brain. Manual interpretation of huge volume of images is time consuming and difficult. Hence, computer-based detection helps in accurate and fast diagnosis. In this study, we proposed an approach that uses deep transfer learning to automatically classify normal and abnormal brain MR images. Convolutional neural network (CNN) based ResNet34 model is used as a deep learning model. We have used current deep learning techniques such as data augmentation, optimal learning rate finder and fine-tuning to train the model. The proposed model achieved 5-fold classification accuracy of 100% on 613 MR images. Our developed system is ready to test on huge database and can assist the radiologists in their daily screening of MR images.

New insights into the chemical profiling, cytotoxicity and bioactivity of four Bunium species

Zengin, Gokhan; Paksoy, Mehmet Yavuz; Aumeeruddy, Muhammad Zakariyyah; Glamocilja, Jasmina; Sokovic, Marina; Diuzheva, Alina; Jekő, József; Cziáky, Zoltán; Rodrigues, Maria João; Custodio, Luisa

Bunium species have been reported to be used both as food and in traditional medicines. The scientific community has attempted to probe into the pharmacological and chemical profiles of this genus. Nonetheless, many species have not been investigated fully to date. In this study, we determined the phenolic components, antimicrobial, antioxidant, and enzyme inhibitory activities of aerial parts of four Bunium species (B. sayai, B. pinnatifolium, B. brachyactis and B. macrocarpum). Results showed that B. microcarpum and B. pinnatifolium were strong antioxidants as evidenced in the DPPH, ABTS, CUPRAC, and FRAP assays. B. brachyactis was the most effective metal chelator, and displayed high enzyme inhibition against cholinesterase, tyrosinase, amylase, glucosidase, and lipase. The four species showed varied antimicrobial activity against each microorganism. Overall, they showed high activity against P. mirabilis and E. coli (MIC and MBC <1 mg mL−1). B. brachyactis was more effective against Aspergillus versicolor compared to the standard drug ketoconazole. B. brachyactis was also more effective than both ketoconazole and bifonazole against Trichoderma viride. B. sayai was more effective than ketoconazole in inhibiting A. fumigatus. B. sayai was most non-toxic to HEK 293 (cellular viability = 117%) and HepG2 (cellular viability = 104%). The highest level of TPC was observed in B. pinnatifolium (35.94 mg GAE g−1) while B. microcarpum possessed the highest TFC (39.21 mg RE g−1). Seventy four compounds were detected in B. microcarpum, 70 in B. brachyactis, 66 in B. sayai, and 51 in B. pinnatifolium. Quinic acid, chlorogenic acid, pantothenic acid, esculin, isoquercitrin, rutin, apigenin, and scopoletin were present in all the four species. This study showed that the four Bunium species are good sources of biologically active compounds with pharmaceutical and nutraceutical potential.

Emergency department ergonomic design evaluation: A case study using fuzzy DEMATEL-focused two-stage methodology

    Gul, Muhammet

Objectives: An emergency department (ED) is a unit of a hospital that is designed, staffed, and equipped to treat injured people and those afflicted with sudden and severe illness. Evaluation of ergonomic design of these departments with respect to specific criteria/standards is expected to contribute to the improvement of productivity and service quality since EDs have too much complexity and volume in the patient flow. Therefore, this paper proposes a two-stage methodology for evaluation of ED ergonomic design. Methods: The first stage provides a check-list with 137 items on six main headings to evaluate the ergonomics of ED physical design with the opinions of medical staff. The second stage offers a fuzzy-based cause and effect decision-making model for the decreased items assessed in the first stage. In this stage, a fuzzy decision-making trial and evaluation laboratory (FDEMATEL) is used since the decision-making process involves the vagueness of human judgments. Results: Considering the interdependence among items, proposed FDEMATEL reflects the causal relationships among criteria through a cause-effect relationship diagram. A case study was carried out at a training and research hospital ED in Istanbul, Turkey. Conclusion: In conclusion, several suggestions are offered that the ED needs interventions on accessibility, patient and personnel accommodations, and personnel privacy.

Study of validity, reliability in accordance with Turkey conditions in ego functions assessment scale

    Durmaz, Yadigar Çevik; Ünsal, Gül

Purpose: The aim of the study is to conduct a reliability and validity study of the Ego Function Assessment (EFA) scale. Design and Methods: The study was conducted with a total of 426 participants, which included 213 patients with schizophrenia and a control group of 213 normal individuals. The Individual Information Form, EFA Scale, Wonderlic Personnel Test, Adjective Check List, and Symptom Check List were used for data collection. Finding: All the statistical procedures performed in the validity and reliability stages of the study show that the scale is a valid, reliable measurement tool for the Turkish culture. Practice Implications: In psychiatric nursing, the use of the EFA scale can be recommended for planning individual patient care, which involves the assessment of a patient's functional adjustment on the basis of their own ego profile.
