Is sexual function impaired in patients with primary headaches? A systematic review of observational studies

    Ataş, Kübra; Kaya Mutlu, Ebru

Introduction: Primary headaches, particularly migraine and tension-type headaches, as chronic and painful conditions, have a significant impact on individuals' health and overall quality of life, including aspects such as sexual health parameters. Objectives: The aim of this study was to review observational studies and to summarize the presence of sexual dysfunction in patients with primary headache and to discern whether it is more common in patients with primary headache than in healthy control subjects. Methods: Observational studies published between January 1, 2000, and May 21, 2023 were searched in Medline (PubMed), Web of Science, Scopus, and EBSCO. This review included 23 observational studies that evaluated sexual dysfunction with or without comparison with healthy control subjects. Results: As a result, the mean Female Sexual Function Index score, a score of <26.55 indicating sexual dysfunction, ranged from 19.25 ± 8.18 to 27.5 ± 7.5 in patients with primary headache. The prevalence of sexual dysfunction and erectile dysfunction was found to be between 10.7% and 93.75% in female patients and between 54.83% and 80% in male patients. Both migraineurs and tension-type headache sufferers had statistically significantly lower sexual function scores in females and lower erectile function scores in males compared with healthy control subjects. Conclusion: Sexual function is significantly affected in patients with primary headache, which is a chronic painful disorder. Therefore, it is very important to ask these patients about their sexual health and, if necessary, to seek support from a sexual health professional. Additionally, future studies may prioritize tension-type headaches and male patients due to the limited amount of research available on these subjects.

Background: A limited number of studies have investigated the effects of circadian rhythm-based running exercise interventions on physical fitness in child athletes. This study aimed to investigate the effects of an eight-week morning and evening running program on lower extremity strength, agility and respiratory function in 10–12-year-old male footballers. Methods: Participants visited the laboratory three times, with one-day intervals before and after the training program. The assessments included maximal inspiratory pressure (MIP), maximal expiratory pressure (MEP), forced expiratory volume in one second (FEV1), forced vital capacity (FVC), and the FEV1/FVC ratio. Additionally, agility and functional performance tests (FPTs) were conducted for both the dominant and non-dominant legs. Results: The findings indicated that morning running was more effective than evening running in enhancing respiratory function. Morning running also showed superior results in lower extremity strength tests, particularly in the single-leg (SL) and triple-leg (THD) crossover hop for distance tests (CHDs) and the 6-m timed-hop test (6 m THT). Furthermore, the agility performance of the morning running group was significantly better than that of the evening and control groups. Conclusion: Consequently, morning running interventions had a positive impact on key physical fitness parameters, including respiratory muscle strength, respiratory function, agility, and lower extremity strength in child footballers.

Zengin, Gokhan; Cetiz, Mehmet Veysi; Abul, Nurgul; Gulcin, Ilhami; Caprioli, Giovanni; Piatti, Diletta; Ricciutelli, Massimo; Koyuncu, Ismail; Yuksekdag, Ozgur; Bahşi, Muammer

Objectives: Five solvent extracts (n-hexane, ethyl acetate, ethanol, ethanol/water (70%), and water) of Gladiolus italicus Mill. from Turkey were evaluated for chemical and biological properties. Methods: Antioxidant activities, inhibitory properties against key enzymes involved in the etiology of chronic diseases were tested, as well as cytotoxic effects on different cell lines. Chemical characterization was also carried out to determine the most abundant compounds of each extract. Results: The highest total phenolic content (TPC) was observed in the water extract while highest TFC in ethanol/water extract. The most abundant compounds in the extracts were hyperoside (69041.06 mg kg−1), isoquercitrin (46239.49 mg kg−1), delphindin-3,5-diglucoside (42043.81 mg kg−1), myricetin (21486.61 mg kg−1), and kaempferol-3-glucoside (21199.76 mg kg−1). Molecular dynamic (MD) simulations confirmed the structural stability and dynamic conformational integrity of these complexes over a period of 100 ns. In network pharmacology, A total of 657 unique target genes were screened: 52 associated with programmed cell death-1 (PD-1), 85 with vascular endothelial growth factor receptor-2 (VEGFR2), and 130 with fibroblast growth factor receptor-2 (FGFR2), identifying crucial gene interactions for these proteins. Gene ontology (GO) and Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) pathway enrichment analyses were conducted, revealing significant interactions and pathways such as the advanced glycation end products (AGE) and their receptors (RAGE) signaling pathway in diabetic complications and T- helper 17 (Th17) cell differentiation, among others. This elucidation of complex networks involving key genes like AKT Serine/Threonine Kinase 1 (AKT1), MYC proto-oncogene (MYC), tumor protein 53 (TP53), Interleukin 6 (IL6), and tumor necrosis factor (TNF) provides a promising foundation for the development of targeted therapies in the treatment of non-communicable diseases. Conclusion: These results show that G. italicus could be a natural source of potent antioxidants and enzyme inhibitors which need to be further explored for the development of biopharmaceuticals.

Llorent-Martínez, Eulogio J.; Nilofar; Sinan, Kouadio Ibrahime; Darendelioglu, Ekrem; Bahsi, Muammer; Polat, Rıdvan; Cakilcioglu, Ugur; Orlando, Giustino; Ferrante, Claudio; Zengin, Gokhan

Salvia, a widely recognized genus globally esteemed for its traditional and medicinal applications, prompted our investigation into the methanol and water extracts of eight Salvia species native to Turkey. These species included S. aucheri, S. candidissima, S. divaricata, S. virgata, S. multicaulis, S. palestina, S. trichoclada, and S. cerino-pruinosa. Our study aimed to assess their biological properties and chemical composition. Utilizing HPLC-ESI-Q-TOF-MS, we identified chemical constituents in the extracts, while antioxidant (radical quenching, reducing power, and metal chelating) and enzyme inhibitory (amylase, glucosidase, tyrosinase, and cholinesterase) activities were evaluated for biological activities. One hundred thirty-one compounds were characterized in the tested extracts. Although many compounds belonging to different chemical families were identified, the main compounds in all the extracts were rosmarinic and sagerinic acids, along with several salvianolic acid isomers. Notably, the methanol extracts displayed superior antioxidant properties overall, with S. cerino-pruinosa exhibiting the highest activity among them, except for metal chelating. Similar to the antioxidant test results, the methanol extracts were more active than the water extracts in the enzyme inhibition tests. Multivariate analysis further highlighted the distinctiveness of the water extract of S. cerino-pruinosa. In conclusion, our findings underscore the biopharmaceutical potential of the tested Salvia species, suggesting their significance as sources of bioactive agents for health-promoting applications.

Protective effect of Momordica charantia against Hepatorenal toxicity induced by Potassium bromate (KBrO3) in rats; [Efecto protector de Momordica charantia contra la toxicidad hepatorrenal inducida por el bromato de potasio (KBrO3) en ratas]

Karagözoğlu, Fatma; Uyar, Ahmet; Akkoyun, Hurrem Turan; Altun, Serdar; Akkoyun, Mahire Bayramoğlu; Aydin, Sevinç; Melek, Sule; Bengü, Aydın Şükrü; Ekin, Suat; Bakir, Ahmet

This study aims to evaluate the effects of Momordica charantia on hepatorenal toxicity caused by potassium bromate (KBrO3) in rats. Wistar rats were divided into 4 groups as control, KBrO3, bitter melon (MC), and KBrO3+MC. Examining the antioxidant enzyme grade of the kidney tissues, it was found that the enzyme activities of catalase (CAT) (P<0.05), glutathione peroxidase (GSH–Px) (P<0.01), and superoxide dismutase (SOD) (P<0.01) decreased in the KBrO3 group in comparison to the control. There was a significant decrease (P<0.001) in glutathione (GSH) levels and an increase (P<0.01) in malondialdehyde (MDA) level in the KBrO3 group in comparison to the control. Examining the antioxidant enzyme activities in liver tissue, it was determined that CAT, GSH–Px, and SOD enzymes reduced significantly (P<0.05, P<0.01, and P<0.001, respectively) in the KBrO3 group in comparison to the control, and the enzyme activity of decreased CAT, GSH–Px, and SOD enzymes significantly elevated (P<0.01) in the MC group. There was a reduction in GSH level in the KBrO3 group in comparison to the control (P<0.01), while an increase was recorded in the KBrO3+MC group (P<0.05). MDA level in liver tissue increased in KBrO3 group in comparison to the control (P<0.01) and MC decreased the MDA level. Histopathological analysis results indicate severe degenerative and necrotic lesions in hepatorenal histoarchitecture of KBrO3 rats in comparison to the control. However, application of MC+KBrO3 significantly reduced the induced hepatorenal injury with a concomitant increase in histopathological lesions. From the immunohistochemical aspect, MC revealed apoptosis concomitant with the suppression of necrosis in the KBrO3-treated rats as demonstrated by the caspase-3 activity.

Özcan, Büşra; Çelikel, Baha Engin; Erdoǧan, Ramazan; Karadaǧ, Mustafa; Aydoǧdu, Volkan; Uǧurlu, Fatih Mehmet; Bozkurt, Eyüp; Turan, Mehmet; Koçal, Meryem; Orhan, Serdar

Background: Regular exercise during childhood impacts not only physical development but also emotional stability, social adaptation, and behavioral control. Therefore, the present study aimed to examine the effects of a 12-week introductory football training programme on violent tendencies, psychological resilience, and social appearance anxiety in children aged 12–14. Methods: A randomized controlled design was used, with 40 children assigned to an experimental group (n = 20) or a control group (n = 20). The experimental group completed 60-min football sessions three times a week, while the control group did not participate in structured activity. The program included a 20-min warm-up, technical and tactical exercises, game-based activities, and a cool-down, targeting physical, technical, tactical, and psychosocial development. Data were collected using the VTS, PRS, and SAAS scales.Statistical analyses were performed using SPSS version 25 (IBM Corp., Armonk, NY, USA), with mixed-design ANOVA, significance set at p < 0.05, and effect sizes reported as partial eta-squared (ηp2). Results: No significant difference was observed in violence tendency scores in the experimental group (p = 0.939). However, a decrease was observed in psychological resilience scores in comparison to pre-test values, and this decrease approached the threshold of significance with a medium effect size (p = 0.153, ηp2 = 0.053). This finding suggests that the intervention may have a limited effect on psychological resilience. While no significant change was detected in the social appearance anxiety variable in the experimental group (p = 0.120), a significant decrease in anxiety levels was observed in the control group (p = 0.029). This finding suggests that factors other than the experimental intervention may have been effective in the control group. Conclusions: In conclusion, the 12-week football training programme demonstrated no significant short-term effect on violent tendencies or social appearance concerns, but may have a temporary effect on psychological resilience. The findings indicate that the impact of sports participation on psychosocial development in children is multifaceted and contingent on individual differences.

Background: The effect of inspiratory muscle training on upper limbs One Rep Maximum (1RM) in professional natural bodybuilders is still unclear. Our aim of this study is to investigate the effects of a 6 weeks inspiratory muscle training on 1RM results. Methods: This study included 14 athletes, that had participated in international bodybuilding competitions. Each athlete had been training for minimum of 5 years and at least 5 h per week. The participants were randomly divided into two groups: inspiratory muscle training (IMT) and control (CON) groups. The IMT group and CON group consisted of seven subjects. While the control group continued with the normal training regime, the IMT group additionally performed inspiratory muscle training with the resistance setting of the PowerBreathe® Classic device set to 40% of the participant’s MIP. Prior to and during the 6-week training period, the bench press 1 RM, anthropometry, pulmonary function tests, and maximal inspiratory (MIP) and expiratory (MEP) pressure measurements were obtained. A nutrition protocol developed by a qualified dietician was implemented for each athlete. Results: The mean maximal strength of the respiratory muscle training group changed by 14.39%, whereas that of the control group changed by 9.43% (p = 0.012). The changes in the mean FVC (p = 0.000), FEV1 (p = 0.001), PEF (p = 0.064), MIP (p = 0.001), and maximal expiratory pressure (p = 0.017) were greater in the IMT group. The mean circumferences of the shoulder (p = 0.004), chest (p = 0.008), arm (p = 0.004), and neck (p = 0.003) improved more in the IMT group than in the CON group. A reduction in abdominal measurement was observed in the IMT group (p = 0.039), whereas no notable discrepancy was identified in body fat percentage (p = 0.295). Conclusion: In conclusion we identified that the addition of progressive loading inspiratory muscle training for competition preparation programs in professional natural bodybuilders will further improve their respiratory function, respiratory muscle strength, maximal strength, and muscle development. This research provides valuable insights into how IMT influences bodybuilding training outcomes, potentially guiding future interventions and program designs to better support strength development and body composition in bodybuilding training contexts.

Köroǧlu, Mihraç; Yılmaz, Coşkun; Tan, Çetin; Çelikel, Baha Engin; Budak, Cemalettin; Kavuran, Korhan; Susuz, Yunus Emre; Barut, Yaşar; Ceylan, Tülay; Soyer, Fikret

Background: The extant research on judo sports has principally concentrated on the physiological effects of training. Conversely, there has been limited attention paid to studies on psychological resilience, self-control, and emotional expression levels. The present study examined the effects of Judo exercises on psychological resilience, self-control, and emotional expression levels in healthy male subjects. Methods: The present study comprised 50 healthy, sedentary male subjects. The subjects were randomly divided into two groups: one group participated in judo training (JT) and the other group served as the control group (CON). The sample sizes for the JT and CON groups were both 25. The JT group underwent judo training, while the CON group maintained their usual lifestyle. The Brief Psychological Resilience Scale, the Multidimensional Brief Self-Control Scale, and the Berkeley Emotion Expression Scale were administered prior to and following the 6-week training period. Results: The study demonstrated that a 6-week judo training regimen exerted a significant effect on the psychological resilience score (e.s. = 1.047, p < 0.001), while no such effect was observed in the Control group (e.s. = 0.0091, p = 0.751). In the context of self-control levels, an effect was observed on the Initiation sub-dimension (e.s. = 1, 739, p < 0.001), yet no effect was found on the Inhibition dimension (e.s. = 0.052, p = 0.892). In the control group, a significant decrease was identified in the Initiation sub-dimension (e.s. = 0, 785, p = 0.001) and Inhibition sub-dimension (e.s. = 1, 861, p < 0.001). The findings indicate that impulse power (e.s. = 0.395) and concealment (e.s. = 0.428) exerted a negligible influence on the emotional expression sub-dimensions. Conversely, psychological resilience (e.s. = 0.886) demonstrated a substantial impact. Conclusions: The judo exercises demonstrated a favorable impact on psychological resilience, self-control, and emotional expression levels in healthy male subjects. The findings of this study may offer significant insights into the impact of judo exercises on psychological resilience, self-control, and emotion expression levels. These findings could serve as a guide for the development of future interventions and program design in the domain of sport psychology.

The effects of different exercise loads in plyometric resistance training on respiratory and hormonal levels in female volleyball players

Kavuran, Korhan; Tizar, Ercan; Oral, Diclehan; Erdoğan, Ramazan; Çelikel, Baha Engin; Ceylan, Tülay; Sezer, Süreyya Yonca; Karataş, Baykal

Background: The present study set out to ascertain the effects of combined exercises, consisting of resistance training and plyometric exercises at varying degrees of intensity, on biochemical and respiratory parameters in female volleyball players. Methods: The research group consisted of 20 professional female volleyball players who participated in national and international volleyball competitions. Participants were randomly divided into two groups: a control group (n = 10) that performed low-intensity exercises at 30%–50% intensity, and an experimental group (n = 10) that followed a high-intensity exercise programme at 60%–80% intensity. Blood samples and spirometric respiratory function values were collected before and after the 8-week exercise program. The biochemical analyses included the assessment of luteinizing hormone (LH), growth hormone (GH), insulin-like growth factor-1 (IGF-1), and total iron binding capacity. Respiratory function was analysed using forced vital capacity (FVC), forced expiratory volume in one second (FEV1), and forced expiratory flow at mid-expiration (FEF). The data were analysed using the SPSS statistical package. Results: The results demonstrated a decline in IGF-1, GH, and total iron-binding capacity levels, and an increase in LH levels, in the biochemical parameters of the control group. Additionally, FVC, FEV1, and FEF values exhibited an increase in the control group. Conversely, the experimental group demonstrated a significant increase in LH, GH, IGF-1, and total iron-binding capacity levels. With regard to respiratory parameters, an increase in FEF values was observed, whilst FVC and FEV1 values decreased. The present findings suggest that high-intensity plyometric resistance exercises have more pronounced effects on biochemical responses, but may trigger different adaptation mechanisms in respiratory capacit. The results of the study showed that there was a difference between the control group’s GH, IGF-1, FVC, and FEV1 data and the experimental group’s GH, IGF-1, FVC, and FEV1 data. Conclusions: In conclusion, plyometric resistance exercises at varying intensities influence both respiratory and biochemical parameters in female volleyball players. Accordingly, well-planned and individualised plyometric resistance training programmes are thought to enhance both the health and athletic performance of athletes.

Mercury is an industrial toxin with detrimental effects on the reproductive system. This study explored the impact of naringenin (NAR) on testicular toxicity and apoptosis in rats chronically exposed to mercury chloride (MC). The research involved 41 adult male Wistar-Albino rats aged about 2.5 months, which were allocated into 5 groups: group 1 was a control group, group 2 received 100mg/kg of NAR, group 3 was exposed to MC, group 4 received both MC and 50mg/kg of NAR, and group 5 received both MC and 100mg/kg of NAR. For the treatments, the control group took 1mL/kg saline via intraperitoneal (ip) injection and 1mL/kg corn oil via gavage. MC was administered at 0.4mg/kg/day to the MC groups via ip, and NAR was delivered in corn oil at 50 and 100mg/kg/day to the respective NAR groups via gavage. All treatments were performed over a period of 20 days, with MC administration starting 1 hour after NAR administration. The irregularity and loss in spermatogenic cell organization, degeneration and vacuolization in tubules, edema, and congestion in interstitial areas of the testicular tissue of the MC group were alleviated by NAR administration. In addition, the increase in Caspase 3, iNOS, and eNOS immunoreactivities of the MC group were alleviated by NAR administration. In conclusion, it was found that NAR had protective and therapeutic effects against oxidative damage, histopathological changes, apoptosis, and altered spermatological parameters resulting from MC exposure in the testis, and 100mg/kg NAR provided positive effects on altered histopathological analysis, spermatological parameters, and apoptosis.

Life satisfaction around the world: Measurement invariance of the Satisfaction With Life Scale (SWLS) across 65 nations, 40 languages, gender identities, and age groups

Swami, Viren; Stieger, Stefan; Voracek, Martin; Aavik, Toivo; Ranjbar, Hamed Abdollahpour; Adebayo, Sulaiman Olanrewaju; Afhami, Reza; Ahmed, Oli; Aimé, Annie; Akel, Marwan

The Satisfaction With Life Scale (SWLS) is a widely used self-report measure of subjective well-being, but studies of its measurement invariance across a large number of nations remain limited. Here, we utilised the Body Image in Nature (BINS) dataset–with data collected between 2020 and 2022 –to assess measurement invariance of the SWLS across 65 nations, 40 languages, gender identities, and age groups (N = 56,968). All participants completed the SWLS under largely uniform conditions. Multi-group confirmatory factor analysis indicated that configural and metric invariance was upheld across all nations, languages, gender identities, and age groups, suggesting that the unidimensional SWLS model has universal applicability. Full scalar invariance was achieved across gender identities and age groups. Based on alignment optimisation methods, partial scalar invariance was achieved across all but three national groups and across all languages represented in the BINS. There were large differences in latent SWLS means across nations and languages, but negligible-to-small differences across gender identities and age groups. Across nations, greater life satisfaction was significantly associated with greater financial security and being in a committed relationship or married. The results of this study suggest that the SWLS largely assesses a common unidimensional construct of life satisfaction irrespective of respondent characteristics (i.e., national group, gender identities, and age group) or survey presentation (i.e., survey language). This has important implications for the assessment of life satisfaction across nations and provides information that will be useful for practitioners aiming to promote subjective well-being internationally. Introduction and Objective. Menstrual poverty lies at the intersection of poverty, sustainability, reproductive rights, and gender inequality. The study investigates menstrual poverty among women affected by the 2023 earthquake in Turkey. Materials and Method. A descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted between 24 April – 24 May 2023 with 400 women impacted by the earthquake. Data were collected via social media using a survey form. Chi-square tests, Bonferroni test, and binary logistic regression model were used for statistical analysis. Results. The mean age of participants was 27.27 ± 8.40 years; 69.5% had higher education, 57.0% lived in urban areas, and 90.5% had no chronic disease. A significant relationship was found between access to menstrual products and basic needs (clean water, toilet paper, soap, safe toilet access, and healthcare) during menstruation after the earthquake (p<0.05). A significant correlation was also observed between disruptions to the menstrual cycle and the following variables: lack of privacy, perception that lack of privacy affected menstruation, healthcare access, and difficulty obtaining menstrual products (p<0.05). Conclusions. Most participants faced difficulties accessing menstrual products, water, hygiene supplies, privacy, and healthcare. Those living in tents or containers reported greater challenges. These barriers contributed to menstrual poverty and impacted women’s cycles. As menstrual health and hygiene are basic needs and human rights, menstrual poverty must be addressed globally.

Y2O3-Doped BioGlass Coatings for Ti-6Al-4V Alloy: Insights into Degradation, Bioactivity, Ion Release, Adhesion, and Corrosion Behavior

Say, Yakup; Aslan, Naim; Cihangir, Salih; Murat, Oğuzkağan; Çaydaş, Ulaş

The Ti-6Al-4V alloy is particularly favored for orthopedic applications. However, important issues such as corrosion resistance, biocompatibility, and ion release need to be addressed. Therefore, this study aims to enhance the corrosion resistance and biocompatibility and reduce the ion release of the Ti-6Al-4V alloy by applying Y2O3-doped bioglass bioceramic coatings. The coatings were synthesized using the sol-gel method, including pure BioGlass and BioGlass with 1, 5, and 10 wt pct Y2O3. These coatings were then evaluated for their corrosion resistance, adhesion strength, degradation behavior, bioactivity, and ion release. The results showed that all coatings exhibited homogeneous, crack-free, and porous morphologies, which are favorable for osteointegration. The addition of 10 wt pct Y2O3 to the BioGlass coating resulted in a 52 pct increment in adhesion strength, which increased from 13.72 ± 2.80 MPa for single BioGlass coatings to 20.81 ± 2.53 MPa. All samples showed degradation values lower than 1 wt pct. Single BioGlass coatings significantly enhanced the bioactivity of Ti-6Al-4V alloy. However, the addition of Y2O3 negatively impacted BioGlass bioactivity, leading to a noticeable decrease as the Y2O3 content increased. Conversely, the presence of Y2O3 negatively impacted bioactivity and corrosion resistance while increasing the release of Ti ions. Specifically, the release of Ti ions increased from 79.5 ± 0.8 ppb in uncoated samples to 253.7 ± 15.3 ppb in BG-coated samples. For 1, 5, and 10 pct Y2O3-added samples, Ti releases were measured as 192.2 ± 33.6 ppb, 168.5 ± 62.4 ppb, and 194.3 ± 54.4 ppb, respectively. This research highlights the potential of tailored BioGlass coatings to improve the performance of Ti-6Al-4V alloys in orthopedic implant applications, particularly for enhancing bone integration and reducing implant failure.

Parents’ Level of COVID-19 Fear, Anxiety and Their Attitudes and Behaviors Toward Vaccination of Their Children

    Baş, Kazım; Gürarslan Baş, Nazan

The aims of this study were to investigate parents’ COVID-19 fear and anxiety levels and determine the relationship between parents’ COVID-19 fear and anxiety levels and their attitudes and behaviors toward having themselves and their children vaccinated. This descriptive and cross-sectional type of research was conducted with 950 parents with 12–18 years old children. Having a chronic disease, being vaccinated, intention to vaccinate their children, and the children’s age and school year were found to increase parents’ COVID-19 fear and anxiety (p < 0.005). A statistically significant correlation was found between the parents’ perceived levels of COVID-19 fear and anxiety and their intentions to vaccinate their children (p < 0.005). According to the study’s findings, the age of the child, the parents’ vaccination, and the parents’ intentions to vaccinate their children were predictors of COVID-19 fear and anxiety.

Automated Detection of Neurological and Mental Health Disorders Using EEG Signals and Artificial Intelligence: A Systematic Review

Uyanik, Hakan; Sengur, Abdulkadir; Salvi, Massimo; Tan, Ru-San; Tan, Jen Hong; Acharya, U. Rajendra

Mental and neurological disorders significantly impact global health. This systematic review examines the use of artificial intelligence (AI) techniques to automatically detect these conditions using electroencephalography (EEG) signals. Guided by Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analysis (PRISMA), we reviewed 74 carefully selected studies published between 2013 and August 2024 that used machine learning (ML), deep learning (DL), or both of these two methods to detect neurological and mental health disorders automatically using EEG signals. The most common and most prevalent neurological and mental health disorder types were sourced from major databases, including Scopus, Web of Science, Science Direct, PubMed, and IEEE Xplore. Epilepsy, depression, and Alzheimer's disease are the most studied conditions that meet our evaluation criteria, 32, 12, and 10 studies were identified on these topics, respectively. Conversely, the number of studies meeting our criteria regarding stress, schizophrenia, Parkinson's disease, and autism spectrum disorders was relatively more average: 6, 4, 3, and 3, respectively. The diseases that least met our evaluation conditions were one study each of seizure, stroke, anxiety diseases, and one study examining Alzheimer's disease and epilepsy together. Support Vector Machines (SVM) were most widely used in ML methods, while Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) dominated DL approaches. DL methods generally outperformed traditional ML, as they yielded higher performance using huge EEG data. We observed that the complex decision process during feature extraction from EEG signals in ML-based models significantly impacted results, while DL-based models handled this more efficiently. AI-based EEG analysis shows promise for automated detection of neurological and mental health conditions. Future research should focus on multi-disease studies, standardizing datasets, improving model interpretability, and developing clinical decision support systems to assist in the diagnosis and treatment of these disorders.
