Aksel-Uylar, Aydan Asli; Topcuoglu, Ceyhun; Saglam, Melda; Vardar-Yagli, Naciye
Background: Cystic fibrosis (CF) is a multisystem disease primarily affecting the lungs. It impacts physical fitness due to increased bronchial secretions and exercise intolerance. Inspiratory muscle training (IMT) is recommended as a pulmonary rehabilitation approach. Therefore, we aimed to examine the effect of inspiratory muscle training on health-related physical fitness in CF. Methods: Articles were searched in five databases from inception to June 2025. All randomized controlled trials comparing IMT with a control group in individuals with cystic fibrosis were included. Four randomized controlled trials involving a total of 90 individuals with CF met the inclusion criteria. Results: A significant difference was found in the change in maximal work capacity, maximal minute ventilation, and exercise duration during the exercise test in the IMT group compared to the control group. However, no significant difference was observed in the change in maximal oxygen uptake, 6-minute walk test distance, and oxygen saturation during the 6-minute walk test between the IMT group and the control group. Conclusion: The therapeutic effectiveness of IMT for physical fitness is still uncertain. The evidence is not enough to assess how IMT can be used to enhance health-related physical fitness in CF. Further research should explore the optimal intensity and duration of IMT training needed to improve cardiorespiratory fitness. Additionally, future studies should evaluate how effective IMT is when examining its impact on health-related physical fitness.

This study introduces a DL and metaheuristic optimization-based framework for fetal health assessment using cardiotocography (CTG) signals to mitigate maternal and neonatal mortality. One-dimensional CTG signals were transformed into 2D representations, and deep feature extraction was performed using AlexNet. Feature vectors FC6, FC7, and their combination were subjected to optimization via Whale Optimization Algorithm (WOA + DL) and War Strategy Optimization (WSO + DL), utilizing updated fitness functions tailored for feature selection. Experimental results with SVM classifiers demonstrated superior performance with FC6 (89.98 %) and WSO + DL (90.17 %). FC6 exhibited strong discriminative capacity, while FC7 contained semantically richer features. The concatenated FC6 + FC7 vector increased feature diversity. WSO + DL achieved optimal balance across classification accuracy, feature subset size, convergence rate, and overall performance metrics. The integration of DL and metaheuristic algorithms effectively isolated informative feature subsets, improving training efficiency, minimizing redundant/noisy data, reducing overfitting risk, and enhancing classification accuracy. Optimization method selection proved critical to overall model performance.

Introduction: Anisakiasis is a zoonotic parasitic disease transmitted through consumption of fish, with increasing global cases. While thorough cooking kills Anisakis larvae, thermo-stable allergens can still cause allergic reactions. Traditional Mediterranean seafood methods such as marinating, salting, and brining, which lack heat treatment, pose a high risk of anisakiasis. Materials and methods: This study investigated the antilarval effects of nanoemulsions made from thyme, garlic, and grape seed essential oils combined with brines on Anisakis L3 larvae in vitro. Results: Larvae were collected from mackerel, chub mackerel, anchovy, horse mackerel, and sardine, with 1746 larvae examined, mostly Anisakis type I and molecularly identified as A. pegreffii. Thyme oil’s main components, carvacrol and thymol, showed strong antimicrobial and antioxidant effects and superior larvicidal activity at lower doses compared to garlic and grape seed oils. Garlic oil, rich in organosulfur compounds, was more effective in Lakerda samples. High salt brine alone inactivated larvae within 24 h. The thyme oil nanoemulsion had droplet sizes below 90 nm, enhancing stability, whereas garlic and grape seed oils had larger droplets. Conclusion: These results indicate that nanoemulsified essential oils, especially thyme oil, are promising natural agents to control Anisakis larvae in traditional sea-food products.

- MakaleYalnız künye2025Scopus SJRQ1Patterns and Predictors of Nurse Turnover Intentions Based on Years of Nursing Experience: A Cluster Analysis Approach
Baris, Veysel Karani; Yesiltepe, Akgun; Celik, Gulbahar
Aim: To identify patterns and predictors of nurse turnover intentions based on years of nursing experience using a cluster analysis approach. Background: Nurses with varying years of experience have different characteristics. These differences can also lead to distinct patterns and predictors of turnover intentions. Methods: For this descriptive study, 785 nurses from hospitals across different regions of Türkiye participated in a survey. Data was collected through online questionnaires between April and May 2022. The K-means unsupervised machine learning algorithm was employed to classify nurses into distinct clusters based on their experience. Multiple linear regression analyses were conducted to identify the predictors of turnover intention specific to each cluster. The STROBE guideline was followed for reporting. Results: Cluster analysis grouped nurses into three categories by experience level: low, medium and high. The medium-experience group had the highest turnover intention, whereas the high-experience group had the lowest. Work stress was the only common predictor across all groups. Low income predicted turnover only for the low-experience group, and gender was significant only for the medium-experience group. Conclusion: This study revealed that turnover intention and its predictors vary by experience level, indicating a need for retention strategies tailored to nurses' years of experience. By considering subgroup characteristics, policymakers can develop targeted interventions to enhance nurse retention.

Lightweight and functional metallic materials are consistently favored and attract significant attention in the biomedical field. This study investigates the influence of ZrN and DLC coatings on Ti6Al4V scaffolds with varying porosities (40%, 50%, 60%) for biomedical applications. PVD-deposited coatings exhibited distinct growth mechanisms: High-resolution SEM-FIB analyses revealed columnar ZrN structures due to limited adatom mobility, while DLC formed conformal, amorphous layers via high-energy carbon species. Corrosion resistance decreased in 40% porous DLC and 60% porous ZrN-coated samples, likely due to coating defects and increased electrolyte access through open pores. ZrN coatings showed superior antibacterial activity and attributed to surface reactivity and potential ion release. In contrast, the uncoated 60% porous scaffolds demonstrated highest cell viability, suggesting that excessive coating on highly porous structures may hinder cell–material interactions. Furthermore, the cytotoxicity evaluations indicated that uncoated scaffolds exhibited the highest cell viability (77.51%) at 60% porosity after 48 hours, with ZrN coatings demonstrating better efficacy compared to DLC in the 50% and 60% porosity groups.

Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) encompasses Crohn's disease (CD) and ulcerative colitis (UC), is a major health problem on a global scale and its treatment is unsatisfactory. We aimed to investigate the effects of transauricular vagal nerve stimulation (tVNS) on inflammation in rats with IBD induced by trinitrobenzene sulfonic acid (TNBS). A total of 36 adult female Sprague–Dawley rats were given TNBS, or vehicle, and tVNS, or sham, every other day for 30 min for 10 days. Postmortem macroscopic and microscopic colon morphology were evaluated by histological staining. Additionally, IL-1β, IL-6, IL-10, and TNF-α cytokine levels in the colon and the brain were evaluated by immunohistochemistry and western blotting analysis. TNBS induced epithelial damage, inflammation, ulceration, and thickened mucosal layer in the colonic tissues. Administration of tVNS significantly ameliorated the severity of TNBS-induced tissue damage and inflammatory response. TNBS also alters pro-inflammatory and anti-inflammatory balance in the brain tissue. TVNS application significantly suppressed the protein levels of pro-inflammatory cytokines, namely IL-1β, IL-6, and TNF- α while augmenting the level of anti-inflammatory cytokine IL-10 in the colonic and the brain tissue. We have shown that TNBS-mediated colonic inflammation and tissue damage are associated with neuroinflammatory responses in the brain tissue. Also demonstrated for the first time that neuroinflammatory response in the gut-brain axis is suppressed by tVNS in the IBD model. Non-invasive tVNS stands out as a new potential treatment option for types of IBD.

Ankle mobility plays a critical role in dynamic stability and propulsion during fencing-specific actions. However, its relationship to performance metrics in young athletes remains unclear. This study aimed to investigate the relationship between ankle range of motion (ROM), acceleration, and jump height in pre-adolescent male fencers, as well as to examine bilateral differences in ankle mobility between the front and rear foot. Fifteen fencers (age 10.86 ± 0.91 years) were assessed for ankle ROM (dorsiflexion, plantar flexion, inversion, eversion) using a goniometer. Performance tests included a 7 m sprint lunge (acceleration) and countermovement jump. Significantly large correlations were observed between front and rear foot ankle plantar flexion range of motion and both acceleration (r = 0.625–0.628, p < 0.05) as well as vertical jump height (r = 0.579–0.647, p < 0.05). Rear foot ankle plantar flexion range of motion significantly predicted acceleration (r2 = 0.335, p < 0.05) and jump height (r2 = 0.418, p < 0.05). In contrast, no meaningful associations were found between dorsiflexion, inversion, or eversion range of motion and performance metrics. Additionally, bilateral comparisons revealed significantly greater dorsiflexion in the front foot ankle and greater eversion in the rear foot ankle (p < 0.05). Plantar flexion ROM is a key contributor to acceleration and jump capacity in youth fencers. Incorporating ankle mobility training may support physical development in this population.

Vasomotor symptoms, such as hot flashes (HFs), commonly affect women during menopause, leading to a reduced quality of life. The current study evaluates the combined effect of active components Asparagus racemosus (AR) and Trigonella foenum-graecum (TFG) in a single oral formulation (IAT) for alleviating menopausal symptoms in ovariectomized rats. Following bilateral ovariectomy, the animals were randomly assigned to nine groups: (1) Control, (2) Ovariectomy (OVX), (3) OVX+TA1 (TA: Combination of Trigonella and Asparagus; TFG 30 mg/kg + AR 30 mg/kg), (4) OVX+TA2 (TFG 30 mg/kg + AR 15 mg/kg), (5) OVX+TA3 (TFG 15 mg/kg + AR 30 mg/kg), (6) OVX+TA4 (TFG 40 mg/kg + AR 30 mg/kg), (7) OVX+TA5 (TFG 30 mg/kg + AR 40 mg/kg), (8) OVX+IAT1 (IAT: Integrated Asparagus and Trigonella; TFG+AR integrated extract, 30 mg/kg), and (9) OVX+IAT2 (TFG+AR integrated extract, 60 mg/kg). On the 8th day of treatment, tail and skin temperatures were recorded every 30 min for 24 h. Ovariectomized rats exhibited menopausal symptoms, such as hormonal imbalances and elevated skin temperature. Administration of AR, TFG, and IAT significantly decreased serum follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH), luteinizing hormone (LH), and cortisol while increasing estradiol, progesterone, and dopamine (p < 0.0001), effectively alleviating hot flash-like symptoms. Additionally, they mitigated ovariectomy-induced oxidative stress by lowering malondialdehyde (MDA) levels and restoring antioxidant enzyme activity. Ovariectomized rats exhibited increased expression of a proto-oncogene (c-FOS), gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH), Kisspeptin, Neurokinin B (NKB), and Transient receptor potential vanilloid 1 (TRPV1), along with reduced expressing brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) levels, which were reversed by treatment, especially with the IAT2 combination. The AR and TFG combination, particularly in IAT formulations, showed strong potential in alleviating menopausal symptoms in ovariectomized rats. These findings suggest that the combination of AR and TFG extracts could be a natural alternative for managing postmenopausal symptoms by restoring reproductive hormone levels, regulating lipid profiles, and enhancing antioxidant defense systems.

Utku, Anıl; Can, Umit; Alpsülün, Mustafa; Balıkçı, Hasan Celal; Amoozegar, Azadeh; Pilatin, Abdulmuttalip; Barut, Abdulkadir
Particulate matter, particularly PM2.5, poses a significant threat to public health due to its ability to disperse widely and its detrimental impact on the respiratory and circulatory systems upon inhalation. Consequently, it is imperative to maintain regular monitoring and assessment of particulate matter levels to anticipate air pollution events and promptly mitigate their adverse effects. However, predicting air quality is inherently complex, given the multitude of variables that influence it. Deep learning models, renowned for their ability to capture nonlinear relationships, offer a promising approach to address this challenge, with hybrid architectures demonstrating enhanced performance. This study aims to develop and evaluate a hybrid model integrating Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) and Recurrent Neural Networks (RNNs) for forecasting PM2.5 levels in India, Milan, and Frankfurt. A comparative analysis with established deep learning and machine learning techniques substantiates the superior predictive capabilities of the proposed CNN-RNN model. The findings underscore its potential as an effective tool for air quality prediction, with implications for informed decision-making and proactive intervention strategies to safeguard public health.

- Derleme MakaleAçık Erişim2025Scopus SJRQ2Ghrelin and LEAP2: Their Interaction Effect on Appetite Regulation and the Alterations in Their Levels Following Bariatric Surgery
Alic, Nese; Ayaz, Aylin
Background and Objectives: Ghrelin plays key roles in appetite regulation, involving both homeostatic and hedonic pathways. In obesity, its metabolism is affected by alterations in neural and hormonal responses. Liver-Enriched Antimicrobial Peptide 2 (LEAP2), recently identified as an endogenous ghrelin receptor antagonist, has emerged as a potential regulator of appetite and energy balance, and bariatric surgery is known to induce changes in this system. In this review, we aimed to evaluate the roles of acyl ghrelin, des-acyl ghrelin, and LEAP2 in food intake regulation and summarize findings on the alterations in their levels after bariatric surgery. Materials and Methods: We conducted a narrative review of human and animal studies published in the literature investigating the roles of acyl ghrelin, des-acyl ghrelin, and LEAP2 in food intake regulation, as well as changes in their levels in obesity and following bariatric surgery. Results: Alterations in the ghrelin system, i.e., the acyl ghrelin and des-acyl ghrelin isoforms and LEAP2, in obesity have been reported. Experimental studies have shown that LEAP2 administration reduces food intake and body weight by suppressing ghrelin-induced food intake. Most studies have found marked reductions in fasting acyl ghrelin after sleeve gastrectomy, more so than after Roux-en-Y gastric bypass. Conclusions: In obesity, altered neural and hormonal responses to food also affect ghrelin metabolism, with significant deviations in acyl ghrelin levels and impaired appetite regulation mechanisms. Unlike ghrelin, LEAP2 levels tend to be elevated in obesity. While changes in acyl ghrelin and des-acyl ghrelin isoforms, particularly after sleeve gastrectomy, are well documented, data on LEAP2 remain limited. Further research is needed to better define the role of LEAP2 in ghrelin-mediated food intake and its potential as a therapeutic target in obesity.

The primary objective of this study was to examine the effect of Momordica charantia L. extract (MCE) on the generation of heterocyclic aromatic amines (HAAs) in meatball samples. Meatballs were prepared with varying usage rates of MCE (0%, 0.5%, and 1%) and pan-fried at 150 °C, 200 °C, and 250 °C for a total cooking duration of 10 min. The samples were analyzed for proximate composition, pH, cooking loss, and HAA levels. Results indicated that increased cooking temperatures led to higher total HAAs, with specific types and quantities of HAAs varying according to both cooking temperature and MCE concentration. The total HAA content in the meatball samples ranged from 0.81 ng/g and 10.75 ng/g. Specifically, the total HAAs were 1.29 ± 0.38 ng/g, 3.40 ± 1.52 ng/g, and 7.60 ± 2.48 ng/g in meatballs cooked at 150 °C, 200 °C, and 250 °C, respectively (p < 0.05). The addition of MCE at different concentrations reduced the generation of total HAAs, with 0.5% MCE showing the highest inhibitory effect, reducing total HAAs by 30.8%. These findings underscore the significance of considering cooking conditions, including temperature and usage rate, when incorporating antioxidant compounds into meat products.

The study groups were the control group (the group without jujube fruit), the H-0.5% group (the group with 0.5% jujube fruit), the H-1 group (the group with 1% jujube fruit), and the H-2 group (the group with 2% jujube fruit). At the end of the experiment (42nd day), the control group had the highest levels of blood glucose, triglycerides, total cholesterol, very low density lipoprotein cholesterol, alanine aminotransferase, aspartate aminotransferase, and uric acid, and the lowest level of creatine (P<0.05). While the lowest malondialdehyde level was detected in the H-2 group (P<0.001), the highest glutathione peroxidase (P<0.01) and catalase (P<0.05) levels were observed in the H-1 and H-2 groups. The control group also had the lowest values for villus height and crypt depth and the highest values for villus height/crypt depth (P<0.001). As a result, it was concluded that jujube fruit, which is mainly used for its antioxidant properties, can be used in poultry compound feeds especially at the level of 1% due to its positive effects on antioxidant and blood parameters and intestinal morphology.

Dietarian identity reflects an individual’s cognitive, emotional, and behavioral orientation toward the consumption or avoidance of animal-based foods, including red meat, poultry, fish, eggs, and dairy. This study aimed to adapt and validate the Dietarian Identity Questionnaire (DIQ) for Turkish-speaking populations by establishing its cultural and linguistic suitability and examining dietarian identity profiles among different dietary patterns. The DIQ was adapted into Turkish and administered via a webbased survey to 487 Turkish-speaking adults (Mean age=28.9±10.7 years; 34.7% male, 64.1% female, and 1.2% non-binary). Participants were categorized as omnivores, vegetarians, or vegans based on self-reported dietary exclusions. Structural validity was assessed using Confirmatory Factor Analysis, while internal consistency, composite reliability, and convergent and discriminant validity were evaluated through Cronbach’s alpha and average variance extracted. Group differences across dietary identity profiles were examined using ANOVA, and interrelationships among the DIQ-Turkish (DIQ-T) subscales were explored through Pearson correlation analysis. The results indicated that the eight-factor DIQ-T demonstrated a strong model fit (χ2 (465) =1841.45, p<0.001, CFI=0.924, TLI=0.914, RMSEA=0.078, SRMR=0.050), confirming its structural validity. Reliability analysis indicated high internal consistency across all subscales, and significant differences were observed between omnivores and vegan/vegetarian groups across multiple dimensions (p<0.001), highlighting distinct psychological and motivational patterns associated with dietarian identity. These findings support DIQ-T as a valid and reliable instrument for assessing dietarian identity, providing a valuable tool for researchers and health professionals investigating dietary behaviors and their potential implications for public health and nutrition interventions.
- MakaleAçık Erişim2025Scopus SJRQ1Evaluation of aerobic and anaerobic capacity in pubertal karate athletes: performance analysis and development strategies
Korkmaz, Kübranur; Aygören, Caner; Düzova, Halil
Background: This study investigated the effects of gender’s foot arch structure (normal arch vs. pes planus) on aerobic and anaerobic performance in pubertal karate athletes. Method: Children with chronic cardiovascular and musculoskeletal diseases were excluded from the study. Participants included boys with normal foot arches (B-nfa, n = 7), boys with pes planus (B-pp, n = 11), girls with normal foot arches (G-nfa, n = 16), and girls with pes planus (G-pp, n = 11). Aerobic capacity was evaluated using the 6-Minute Walk Test, while anaerobic performance was assessed through the Vertical Jump Test and sprint tests (10 m and 30 m). The height of the foot arch was measured using the Navicular Drop test. Nonparametric data were analyzed using the Kruskal–Wallis test and Dunn's post-hoc test to identify significant differences. Parametric data were analyzed using one-way ANOVA and Tukey's post hoc test. Pearson's test was used for parametric correlation, while Spearman's test was used for nonparametric correlation. The significance threshold was set at p < 0.05. Results: Individuals in the G-nfa group exhibited higher anaerobic power than those in the G-pp group (p = 0.0452). There was a strong negative correlation between arch pes planus and Spear equations (r = 0.63, p = 0.0004). B-nfa participants performed faster than both B-pp (p = 0.0015) and G-pp (p = 0.0015). The G-nfa completed the 10 m sprint test faster than both B-pp and G-pp (p = 0.0052). B-nfa outperformed G-pp in the 30 m sprint (p = 0.036) and covered greater distances in the six-minute walk test compared to B-pp (p = 0.034) and G-pp (p = 0.002). Conclusion: In this study, we concluded that flat feet do not negatively affect the development of aerobic capacity in prepubertal children undergoing professional karate training. Still, they may significantly impact the growth of anaerobic power.
